whenever someone wants to start blabbering about how damaging shoplifting and theft is to a business, particularly a place like Walmart, Target or nearly any big box retail establishment, be sure to look up the company's annual revenue.
and when you start playing out the numbers, it gets absolutely fucking absurd real fast.
for example, let's use Walmart.
the CEO of Walmart - Doug McMillon - his net worth is $280 million.
this is a person who made $24.1 million in fiscal 2023 alone.
that's about 933x the median salary of a Walmart employee.
let's have some more fun with numbers, shall we?
if you used only the ceo's salary of $24.1 million per year here's what you could buy in (men's) clothes from Walmart!
300,000 Hanes Men's ComfortSoft Crewneck T-Shirt - Pack Of 5 ($20)
500,000 Athletic Works Men's Crew Socks - Pack of 12 ($11)
250,000 George Men's Cotton Stretch Regular Leg Boxer Briefs - Pack of 6 ($20)
250,000 George Regular Fit Jeans - 1 pair ($13)
250,000 George Men's 38mm Single Loop Casual Belt - 1 belt ($7)
150,000 Athletic Works Men's Banded Jogger Slip-on - 1 pair ($15)
and he would still have $350,000 left over!
mind you - this is only the CEO!
Walmart CFO (Chief Financial Officer) John David Rainey made $39,725,601 during the same time period.
Walmart Chief Technology and Development Officer Suresh Kumar made $16,107,812 during the same time period.
Sam's Club President & CEO Kathryn McLay made $11,934,475 during the same time period.
Walmart President & CEO of Walmart International Judith McKenna made $13,526,160 during the same time period.
collectively, Walmart's Executive Staff was compensated to the tune of $120,900,000 during fiscal 2023.
so you know those numbers up there? all of those clothes that you can now commonly find locked behind glass at your local Walmart that you could buy with the CEO's annual salary?
multiply those figures by five, and now you have what you could buy with ONE YEAR of all of the Walmart executives' pay combined.
that's enough to give everyone in the City of Chicago, IL two free t-shirts.
the name of the game is greed. this is one corporation - albeit a huge one. and just one single solitary fiscal year of earnings.
extrapolate this across 5-10 years. could you imagine the untold number of lives we could change if these executives agreed to forego their insane salaries for a short period of time? it would almost certainly not cause them any undue struggle because of the sheer amount of wealth and resources they have.
it'll never happen, but don't let anyone convince you that it has to be this way. we are being gaslit by people with more money than we will ever see in many lifetimes so that they can live a life of luxury unseen by 90% of the population. stop letting them pull the wool over your eyes and call it what it is: pure, unadulterated greed.

A shy penguin wins New Zealand’s bird election after campaign filled with memes and tattoos

A hoiho or yellow-eyed penguin pictured on April 2, 2023, has won New Zealand's annual Bird of the Year vote, Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, after a fierce contest absent the foreign interference and controversies that have upset the country's avian elections before. (Hayden Parsons via AP)
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — It’s noisy, smelly, shy — and New Zealand’s bird of the year.
The hoiho, or yellow-eyed penguin, won the country’s fiercely fought avian election on Monday, offering hope to supporters of the endangered bird that recognition from its victory might prompt a revival of the species.
It followed a campaign for the annual Bird of the Year vote that was absent the foreign interference scandals and cheating controversies of past polls. Instead, campaigners in the long-running contest sought votes in the usual ways — launching meme wars, seeking celebrity endorsements and even getting tattoos to prove their loyalty.
More than 50,000 people voted in the poll, 300,000 fewer than last year, when British late night host John Oliver drove a humorous campaign for the pūteketeke -- a “deeply weird bird” which eats and vomits its own feathers – securing a landslide win.

This year, the number of votes cast represented 10% of the population of New Zealand — a country where nature is never far away and where a love of native birds is instilled in citizens from childhood.
“Birds are our heart and soul,” said Emma Rawson, who campaigned for the fourth-placed ruru, a small brown owl with a melancholic call. New Zealand’s only native mammals are bats and marine species, putting the spotlight on its birds, which are beloved — and often rare.
This year’s victor, the hoiho — its name means “noise shouter” in the Māori language — is a shy bird thought to be the world’s rarest penguin. Only found on New Zealand’s South and Chatham islands — and on subantarctic islands south of the country — numbers have dropped perilously by 78% in the past 15 years.
“This spotlight couldn’t have come at a better time. This iconic penguin is disappearing from mainland Aotearoa before our eyes,” Nicola Toki, chief executive of Forest & Bird — the organization that runs the poll — said in a press release, using the Māori name for New Zealand. Despite intensive conservation efforts on land, she said, the birds drown in nets and sea and can’t find enough food.
“The campaign has raised awareness, but what we really hope is that it brings tangible support,” said Charlie Buchan, campaign manager for the hoiho. But while the bird is struggling, it attracted a star billing in the poll: celebrity endorsements flew in from English zoologist Jane Goodall, host of the Amazing Race Phil Keoghan, and two former New Zealand prime ministers.
Aspiring bird campaign managers — this year ranging from power companies to high school students — submit applications to Forest & Bird for the posts. The hoiho bid was run by a collective of wildlife groups, a museum, a brewery and a rugby team in the city of Dunedin, where the bird is found on mainland New Zealand, making it the highest-powered campaign of the 2024 vote.
“I do feel like we were the scrappy underdog,” said Emily Bull, a spokesperson for the runner-up campaign, for the karure — a small, “goth” black robin only found on New Zealand’s Chatham Island.
Tumblr media

The karure’s bid was directed by the students’ association at Victoria University of Wellington, prompting a fierce skirmish on the college campus when the student magazine staged an opposing campaign for the kororā, or little blue penguin.
The rivalry provoked a meme war and students in bird costumes. Several people got tattoos. When the magazine’s campaign secured endorsements of the city council and local zoo, Bull despaired for the black robin’s bid.
But the karure — which has performed a real-life comeback since the 1980s, with conservation efforts increasing the species from five birds to 250 — took second place overall.
This weekend as Rawson wrapped up her campaign for the ruru, she took her efforts directly to the people, courting votes at a local dog park. The veteran campaign manager who has directed the bids for other birds in past years was rewarded by the ruru placing fourth in the poll, her best ever result.
“I have not been in human political campaigning before,” said Rawson, who is drawn to the competition because of the funds and awareness it generates. The campaign struck a more sedate tone this year, she added.
“There’s been no international interference, even though that was actually a lot of fun,” she said, referring to Oliver’s high-profile campaign.
It was not the only controversy the election has seen. While anyone in the world can vote, Forest & Bird now requires electors to verify their ballots after foreign interference plagued the contest before. In 2018, Australian pranksters cast hundreds of fraudulent votes in favor of the shag.
The following year, Forest & Bird was forced to clarify that a flurry of votes from Russia appeared to be from legitimate bird-lovers.
While campaigns are fiercely competitive, managers described tactics more akin to pro wrestling — in which fights are scripted — than divisive political contests.
“Sometimes people want to make posts that are kind of like beefy with you and they’ll always message you and be like, hey, is it okay if I post this?” Bull said. “There is a really sweet community. It’s really wholesome.”

Today we remember Sub. Officer Archibald McLay, 35, from Central Fire Station, Glasgow Fire Service, who tragically died in the line of duty, whilst attending a fire at the Scottish Television Studios, located at The Theatre Royal in Hope Street, Glasgow on November 3rd 1969.
Described as “an extensive and difficult fire” in the sub-basement of the studios, the alarm was raised in the late afternoon. The fire had started 30ft below ground. Within minutes, the fire crews arrived to find the building consumed with thick, black smoke.
At one point 90 firemen were fighting the blaze and the decision was taken to use, for the first time in Glasgow, high expansion foam to quell the blaze. Glasgow was the first city in the country to adopt the technique, usually used in mine fires, for regular firefighting.
Foam was pumped into the studios at such a rate that fresh supplies had to be brought in from Paisley.
Around 11pm it became clear that Archie McLay, who was 35 at the time, had not returned from inside the building. Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus went back in to studios, fighting their way through foam 6ft deep to search for him.
He was found under the stage, his breathing line out of his mouth. One of his colleagues told the Evening Times: “At some point the trap door on the stage must have been opened and he would have stepped back and disappeared through it.”  A team of ten firefighters many of them seen to have tears streaming down their faces, recovered Sub. Officer McLay’s body from the building.
During the fire, three other crew members had collapsed from a lack of oxygen. A couple of their colleagues heard them fall and managed to pull them out. Later, sub officer John Jamieson, a friend of Archie’s, developed an alarm that would sound when firefighters were knocked unconscious or overcome by fumes.
It became known as the Strathclyde, was used by the brigade and fire crews still use a version of the original alarm, now called the Bodyguard.
The fire burned for 10 hours
Sub. Officer Archibald McLay  was accorded a brigade funeral, with his coffin being borne to the church aboard a fire appliance.
The cause of the blaze was deemed to of been an electrical fault in the basement, which caused a large quantity of documents which were stored there to ignite.
The plaque outside the Theatre Royal is one of 12 on Glasgow’s Firefighters’ Heritage Trail, commemorating the lives of fire crews and members of the public who have been lost in fires.
The statue outside Glasgow Central called 'citizen firefighter'  was commissioned by Strathclyde fire and rescue to honour firefighters past & present.

Sydney Swans veteran Luke Parker cops six-game suspension for VFL bump that hospitalised opponent
In short: Luke Parker is suspended for six games for an incident in the VFL that left his opponent Josh Smith hospitalisedThe VFL tribunal factored in the extent of Smith’s injuries and disregarded Parker’s claims of an otherwise clean record in making its judgementWhat’s next? The ban will keep Parker from playing in Sydney’s VFL or AFL teams until well into July Veteran Sydney midfielder Luke Parker must serve a six-week ban for a heavy bump in a VFL game that hospitalised opponent Josh Smith. Parker has not played any AFL football for the Swans this season and the suspension means he will not break back into their senior team until well into July, at the earliest. The VFL could have suspended him for four games but referred Parker directly to the tribunal for the incident last Friday night while he was playing for the Swans’ reserves side against the Frankston Dolphins. In handing down the penalty, tribunal chairman Tim Bourke said Parker had failed in his duty of care to Smith. “We weigh up the matters … the incident being off the ball, unforeseen by Smith, causing injuries likely to result in surgery and 10 weeks missed games by Smith,” Bourke said. “[It] brings the tribunal to the conclusion this was not at the lower end of carelessness. “It’s the totality of the incident which ultimately settles the sanction to be imposed by the tribunal.” Sydney pleaded guilty, arguing instead during Tuesday night’s lengthy hearing against the severity of his penalty. Smith was hospitalised after Parker ran past the ball and the incident was graded as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact. Swans advocate Nick Kidd used GPS data to argue Parker was barely at walking speed when he bumped Smith, to block him from the next contest. Kidd also argued that given Parker had only been suspended once previously in his lengthy AFL career, that warranted a discount on this ban. But Bourke said Parker had “some nine sanctions”, adding: “We find he’s not a player that qualifies as a verifiable example of exemplary disciplinary history.” Kidd used a series of still images from the video footage to contend Smith’s injuries were from an accidental clash of heads, immediately after Parker had bumped him. The medical report said Smith had concussion and facial fractures, plus he would need surgery. He is expected to be sidelined for 10 weeks. Luke Parker (right) has not been able to break into the Swans’ best 22 this year.(Getty Images: Cameron Spencer) In his evidence, Parker said he had contacted Smith to apologise and check on his welfare. “It was no intention of mine to make contact with his head,” Parker said. But VFL advocate Morgan McLay argued Parker had breached his duty of care to Smith in the incident and deserved the six-week ban. “There’s a clear need to protect the head. Everyone’s worst fears have occurred,” McLay said of the injuries to Smith. Parker had been unable to return to the Sydney AFL side since recovering from injury a month ago. He has played 283 senior games for the Swans and received support earlier on Tuesday from coach John Longmire. “If you look at it really closely, he went to block a player and shepherd a player that was coming through and got it wrong,” Longmire said. “He went to block and he actually wasn’t moving, he was stationary at the point of contact. He didn’t go high, unfortunately, it didn’t work out the way that he intended it to do.” AAP Posted 1h ago1 hours agoTue 21 May 2024 at 9:44pm, updated 1h ago1 hours agoTue 21 May 2024 at 9:46pm Source link via The Novum Times

"IS JAILED FOR YEAR AFTER WILD CHASE," Toronto Star. September 18, 1943. Page 23. --- John McLay Gets Additional Three Months for Dangerous Driving --- "A" Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Browne. Following a wild chase up and down streets and lanes in the Dundas-Jarvis district at 1.15 a.m. today by Constables John Murray and Cecil Payne, John McLay, 19, was arrested on charges of theft of a motor car and dangerous driving. Before Magistrate Browne, he pleaded guilty to the theft charge and was convicted on the dangerous driving count.
"Accused is a first offender, but is making a fool of himself. He comes from a good family, but got himself mixed up with the Jarvis St. gang," declared Crown Attorney Malone.
On the theft charge he was given one year definite and three months indefinite. For dangerous driving the sentence was three months, to run consecutive.
P.C. Murray said he and P.C. Payne were driving east on Dundas St. when he saw a car proceeding north at about 45 m.p.h. "We gave chase up Mutual St., along Gould St and through lanes on Gerrard St., Dundas St., Dalhousie St, and Pembroke St. When going down Pembroke St., he went over a lawn and then tried to go into a lane. He blew a tire and we got him. He had been drinking, but he handled the car all right."
"It is a serious matter. Some person might have been killed," said the court.
Earl Scott pleaded guilty of stealing a sweater from a downtown store. Det. B. Anderson said accused walked into the store, took the sweater and left.
"Has this man a record?" asked Magistrate Browne.
"He has been in a little difficulty. There are just two typewritten pages. I have not the time to read them all," replied Crown Attorney Malone.
"Four months." said his worship.
"You have done nothing else but steal all your life. You will go to Kingston penitentiary for two years," said Magistrate Browne to John Hanlon, [pictured] after he pleaded guilty of stealing two watches from a jewelry store on Bloor St. H. Mann, store proprietor, said accused came into his store yesterday afternoon and made a small purchase. "I was suspicious of him and while I was wrapping up his purchase I saw him take two watches valued at about $65. I held him until the police arrived." he said.
Robert Harris, 17, pleaded not guilty of taking a motor car without consent of the owner. Det. Herbert White told the court that accused, with three juveniles was in a car stolen from Sherbourne and Gerrard Sts. "Accused told me that one of the juveniles took the car and picked him up. He admitted that he knew the car was stolen," the officer related.
Harris said he knew the car was stolen but that he did not steal it nor drive it. He was remanded on his own bail until Sept. 24, for judgment.
Sydney T. Smith, convicted of failing to remain at the scene of an accident and careless driving, was fined $25 and costs or 20 days in each case. If the fines are not paid. the jail terms will run consecutively. He appeared in "D" court.
P. C. Dorkin stated accused was passing a parked car when he struck Miss Ruth Haggins and injured her foot. "He did not stop. I chased him to his home on Withrow Ave," he said. Smith, pleading for leniency, said he had three sons in the army and three children at home.
'CUPFUL OF GAS' ---- County Police Court, at County buildings - Magistrate Keith. On bail of $50 each. Stanley and William Martin, charged with theft of gasoline from an Agincourt service station, were remanded to the 21st. William Martin also faces a charge of driving without an operator's license.
"It was only a cupful of gasoline to get a stalled car off the road," said Paul Hinds, defence counsel, in asking for bail. "The police will verify that."
[AL: Hanlon had been in the penitentiary before, many years ago, and served several terms in the reformatory. He lived with his wife in Long Branch, a suburb of Toronto. He was 30, with no kids, and worked as a commercial labourer. He was convict #7432 at Kingston, and worked mostly in the kitchen. He was released April 1945.]

Summary, Week 9
World War Two required and inspired new methods of manufacturing, and made available many new materials. Better glues allowed molded plywood. Fiberglass and aluminum became available, as well as electric welding and a more sophisticated understanding of ergonomics. After the war, designers appropriated these advances and produced work with bold new material use and gorgeous new form language. Designers produced organic forms that are a clear reaction to decades of machine-age geometry and the previously limited forms allowed by mass production. After the War, designers also began looking at lifestyle to inform their decisions; young families living in small new houses, built with new materials, in new dense suburbs, had new requirements for their appliances and furniture. For the first time, our ability to manufacture in large quantities and the demand for designed objects were combined in a way that allowed designers control over the volume, cost, and form of the objects they were creating. All the names included, if they matter or not: John Henry Belter Samuel Gragg (Elastic Chair) Michael Thonet  (Boppard chair) August Thonet  (one-piece chairs) Mike Jarvi (today’s on-piece furniture guy) Isaac Cole (one-piece chair) John Mayo (scale-board manufacturing patent) Gardner Co. (plywood chair) Leo Bakeland (phenolic glue) James Nevin (phenol formaldehide glue) Josef Albers (go check out Anni Albers too!!!) Gerrit Rietveld  Alvar Aalto (go check out Aino Marsio Alto too!!!) Gerald Summers (and wife Majorie Amy Butcher) (Makers of Simple Furniture) Isokon (Jack and Molly Prichard) Wells Coates Marcel Breuer  Egon Riss (Penguin Donkey for Isokon) Ernest Race (Penguin Donkey for Isokon) Shin & Tomoko Azumi (Penguin Donkey for Isokon Plus) Bruno Mathsson Charles and Ray Eames  Eero Saarinen  Marli Ehrman (saved the day with upholstery!) Harry Bertoia (and Marion Overby, Gregory Ain, William Francis, Norman Bruns, all at Eames Office) Bill Levitt (Levittown) Donald Deskey (Weldtex) Hans Pieck Arne Jacobsen  Hans Wegner  Carlo Mollino  Osvaldo Borsani Vittorio Nobili Luciano Nustrini Ray Komai  Roger McLay Maria Chomentowska (I forgot to show you her 1956 "Płucka" or “lungs” chair, sorry!) Jan Kurzatkowski (oops again; I just sort of forgot about Poland) Sori Yanagi  Junzo Sakakuro Grete Jalk  David Rowland  Robin Day , Lucienne Day Greta Magnusson Grossman

John Deluisi
John Edward Deluisi, 70, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020, after a valiant battle with leukemia.
John, son of John and Catherine Deluisi, is survived by his wife, Nancy McLay Deluisi, children John, Tina (Jack), and Jill, siblings Kathleen Deeney (Pat), Jimmy (Linda) and Jeanie McGuigan (Joe), and grandchildren Jack, Gabi, Emily, James, Olivia, Vincent, Marcus and Nolan.
A native of Philadelphia and North Catholic alumnus, John was a proud Marine and Vietnam War veteran. Following his military service, he served 26 years as a Philadelphia firefighter where he retired as a Lieutenant. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting with his friends in the Doe Run Hunting Club and was a dedicated wine enthusiast (think Carlo Rossi jug wine). In retirement, he was a beloved VIP at Twistie's Bar in Strathmere, NJ, a favorite haunt not far from his home in Ocean City, where he retired with his soon to be sainted wife Nancy.
For all of his varied interests, spending time with his family was John's true passion; he'd held the titles of Father of the Year and World's Best Pop Pop since 1972 and 2001, respectively. He channeled his love of good food into the delicious meals he lovingly prepared for his family and friends. Though a pie maker extraordinaire, he was arguably best known for his famous crabs & spaghetti, which gained a reputation over the years as one of the most sought-after dishes. Those lucky enough to score a coveted invitation to a feast at the Deluisis never forgot the scrumptious food, or the boisterous stories and laughs that were defining elements of every meal at John's table. Many meals would include heated debates over politics or how bad the “Iggles” were every “Sundy”
Wherever or whomever he was with, his storytelling skills made him a man of legendary status. John could make ANYONE smile or laugh. While his family's hearts are broken, they are grateful that John's suffering is over. John's zest for life and boundless generosity of spirit will be missed by all whose lives he touched. He will live forever in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him, and in the countless wonderful stories and memories that his children, grandchildren, and future great-grandchildren will share for many years to come.

Throughout his life, John McLay has tried numerous medications to improve his health. He currently takes several prescription medications and vitamins each day.
McLay also takes testosterone and the human growth hormone Serostim to treat his wasting. The hormones combined with lifting weights, doing cardio, adhering to a low carb diet and getting rest have helped reduce the visceral fat in and around his lungs, liver, heart and other organs and helped him build more muscle.
“If you had told me when I was 29 that I would live to be 62, I wouldn’t have believed you,” McLay says. “Even with my positive attitude, I would have thought that was asking too much of the universe.”
