It seemed that winter had returned to the wild west Highlands of Scotland, for a nasty cold wet sleet had been falling for much of the night in Algy's assistants' garden, and the rocky ridges which encircled his home were sprinkled with a dusting of fresh snow.
Hopping up into a tree to assess the situation, Algy felt disappointed in the weather birds, for their forecast had been wrong yet again, in almost every respect… However, despite the low temperature and exceedingly damp chill in the air, the day was calm, and free from the strong, bitter wind he had been expecting, so Algy was able to comfort himself with the very British thought that "it might brighten up yet"…
As he surveyed the snowy ridges in the distance, Algy recalled an old poetic riddle:
From Heaven I fall, though from earth I begin. No lady alive can show such a skin. I'm bright as an angel, and light as a feather, But heavy and dark, when you squeeze me together. Though candor and truth in my aspect I bear, Yet many poor creatures I help to insnare. Though so much of Heaven appears in my make, The foulest impressions I easily take. My parent and I produce one another, The mother the daughter, the daughter the mother.
[Algy is thinking of the poem On Snow. A Riddle. by the 17th/18th century Irish-English writer Jonathan Swift.]

The animated film Gulliver's Travels (1939) from Fleischer Studios, the people who gave us the Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons (among others).
Based on a portion of the Jonathan Swift novel, the film relates the tale of sailor Lemuel Gulliver's adventures in Lilliput, a land where the people are only a few inches tall.
Sam Parker, a radio announcer, was cast as the voice of Gulliver. The producers thought he matched the part physically as well, so he was filmed acting the role and later rotoscoped.
This was only the second animated feature film by an American studio, following Walt Disney's Snow White (1937). It was well received by audiences and critics alike, and was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Original Score and Best Original Song), but lost out to The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Wow, how ironic. It's almost as if a misquote changes its pyjamas in a private jet while the truth naps on the bus.

Wood Engraving Wednesday
On this last Wood Engraving Wednesday of 2023, it seems appropriate to end the year with some engravings by one of the principal revivers of the wood engraving in the early 20th century, Robert Gibbings (1889-1958). Gibbings acquired the Golden Cockerel Press in 1924, and in 1928 the press published this book, Miscellaneous Poems by Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) with twelve original wood engravings by Gibbings, printed in Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire in an edition of 375 copies (of which, 150 were distributed in the U. S. by Random House, which had been founded a year earlier).
It also seems appropriate that Gibbings would print and publish a work by Swift as both shared parallels in their biographies: both were writers; both had deep connections to the Anglican Church of Ireland; and both were born in Ireland (Swift to an English family, spending the rest of his life in Ireland; Gibbings to an Irish family, and spending the rest of his life in England). And judging by these engravings, both shared an interest in the whimsical.
Our copy of Miscellaneous Poems is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff.

Stella
Artist: Sir John Everett Millais (English, 1829-1896)
Date: 1868
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Manchester Art Gallery, Liverpool, United Kingdom
Description
Three-quarter length portrait of a young woman depicted as 'Stella', the subject of Jonathan Swift's 'Journal to Stella', in profile to the right with her face turned to three-quarter view. She has long dark hair, which is tied away from her face with a lace and ribbon cap, a string of coral beads around her neck, and an ivory-coloured dress patterned with bouquets and posies of flowers with half-length sleeves. She is seen standing next to a highly elaborate wooden sideboard with a marble top, a sheet from a letter in her hand (presumably from Swift); before her, on the top of the sideboard, are the other sheets of the letter, a bronze figurine, and a large dark aquamarine-coloured jar. The drawer of the sideboard is slightly open.

Image #1: Trees have been trimmed outside Universal Studios, taking away the shade from protestors on a 90 Degree Fahrenheit Week. After some investigation it was found that the tress belonged the the city and they had not issued permits for them to be trimmed.
Image #2: A picture posted to r/Disneyland with the caption "Today at the Park...". The picture shows a sign that reads, "Notice of Filming Today. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will be filming at this location today. By entering this location, you irrevocably consent to and authorize Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, its affiliates, successors, and assigns (collectively, 'Producer'), to photograph you, make audio and video recordings of you, and use such photographs and recordings throughout the world, for any purpose whatsoever in perpetuity and in any media including, but not limited to, online, social media, streaming platforms, television broadcast and home entertainment products. All such photographs and recordings will be the sole property of the Producer." At the bottom of the sign it says, "Disney: Haunted Mansion, World Premiere, Disneyland"
Imagine getting paid 400 times more than your lowest paid worker and complaining about workers being "unrealistic." Like, listen Bobby boy, I think even 40 times more or whatever the rate was in 1990. I'm about to make a new Modest Proposal if you know what I mean lol
