Brown rice jook, with pieces of crispy breaded fish and spicy chili crisp. Jook is the Cantonese word for congee, a sort of rice porridge that is perhaps comparable to oatmeal but usually savoury. I grew up considering it as "sick people food" because it's mild and easily digested. I've been sick lately, and after eating mild jook, I got tired of the blandness. Spicy chili crisp changes everything!

Chan Kee, 931 W Duarte Rd, Monrovia, CA 91016
Tumblr media
I’ve been looking for good congee in the SGV for years and I’ve finally found it. I’m so grateful that Chan Kee has opened in Monrovia. They specialize in Hong Kong style congee!
Order at the counter and they’ll give you a buzzer. When it goes off, go to the counter and get your food.  They’re still in soft opening mode and it looks like they will expand the menu to include dim sum.  The combo meal menu includes a choice of porridge, a side, and a drink. Or you can choose the noodle combo with noodles and a drink. There are 12 kinds of porridge, including pork liver, fish, free range chicken, frog legs, abalone, etc.
Pork with thousand year egg porridge, mixed sauce rice rolls, and hot milk tea ($13.75): The congee is enough for 2 or three people. It’s a huge amount served in a metal container placed in a wood bucket. The congee was broken down with lots of shredded, flavorful pork and big pieces of thousand year egg. You can add what you’d like from the condiment station (sauces, white pepper, scallions, ginger, cilantro, peanuts, etc.). It’s so good! Going to crave it often. The rice noodle rolls were very good too – fresh, soft rolls covered in a sesame sauce and a hoisin sauce. I added scallions, sriracha, peanuts, and white pepper. Yum! The milk tea was very strong. It’s unsweetened. You can sweeten it to taste. They even have condensed milk that you can add to it.
Fresh fish congee: Wasn't as thick or flavorful as the pork w/preserved egg porridge. Tender pieces of a mild white fish. Not much ginger but you can add ginger, scallions, etc.
There’s a cute congee statue in the entrance that reminds me of Ding Tai Fung’s dumpling creature. I was surprised that they do not accept cash. They also don’t accept tips. The place looks nice – new furniture, open kitchen. It’s in a strip mall so parking is easy to find.

Jook 죽, a Korean rice porridge, is a popular dish that can be eaten as a light meal or when one is sick because it is easy to digest. This creamy porridge is one of the best comfort foods commonly served to the sick, elderly, and babies. Jook is commonly used as baby’s first foods, known as "Iyushik" 이유식 in Korea. Now that my baby has started to transition into more thicker consistency foods, it is a perfect way to add more texture and to introduce different proteins.
There are many different variations on this Korean porridge recipe made with different grains, proteins, and vegetables. This vegetarian jook recipe is a healthier twist using lentils and brown rice. You can also use chicken or beef broth, as well as add different meats & seafood for different flavors and textures. Also, try saving some of the stock and using it to make different Asian soups for more flavor!
Brown Rice Vegetable Porridge 채소 현미죽
Ingredients:
1 ½ cups of brown rice
¼ cup of lentils (I use green)
1 tbsp of sesame oil
1 medium carrot
2 cups of spinach
1 cup of broccoli
For the stock
1 yellow onion (cut in ½)
⅓ of daikon radish (cut in ½)
8-10 dried anchovies
6-8 garlic gloves
5-6 green onion stems
6 pieces of dried kelp about 2 inch squares
10-12 cups of water
Directions:
1. Wash & Soak the rice and lentils for about 120 minutes.
2. Place all the ingredients for the stock in a large pot. Cover the ingredients with water.
3. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium high for about 90-120 minutes.
4. Strain the broth & discard the solids.
5. In a separate pan, heat the sesame oil over medium heat.
6. Saute the carrots, spinach, and broccoli for 2 minutes until it is slighty soft.
7. In a separate pot, heat the sesame oil over medium heat and add the rice and stir fry everything together for another minute.
8. Add the vegetables to the pot and stir fry everything together for another minute.
9. Add the soup stock so that it covers about ½ an inch above the ingredients. Bring it up to a boil.
10. Reduce the heat to a simmer, give it a stir, and cook at low heat for about 30 minutes.
