Woody Woodpecker (2017) — I went through this entire movie wanting to smash Woody with a hammer. at first, I thought it was just because I wanted to be on Lance’s side (he’s played by Timothy Omundson after all), but then I realised: Woody is incredibly fucking obnoxious and I want to hit him. it’s not funny, it has none of the characters from the original except Woody, and he’s easily the worst part of this entire movie. maybe I’m being too harsh on this, considering it’s a kids movie, but Woody really isn’t likeable throughout this entire movie. the editing sucks, the acting is even worse. don’t even get me started on the fact that the budget given to this shithole was way too high. if you’re looking for a movie to watch with the kids, avoid this one. you and the kids deserve much better.

plot — the hyperactive red-headed bird enters a turf war with a big city lawyer wanting to tear down his home in an effort to build a house to flip.

If I Only Had Christmas (Hallmark, 2020)

You are a bad laugh and a hairless cat away from being an action movie villain.

Plot Synopsis: At Christmas, a cheerful publicist teams up with a cynical VP and his eclectic team to help a charity in need. (x)

In My Humble Opinion: Honestly, I know opinions on Candace Cameron Bure and her oeuvre of Christmas movies, but I remain thankful that she exists as the perennial start of Hallmark line-ups. Because no other Hallmark star would have the ability to get Wizard of Oz Christmas off the ground and on the channel.

Of course, Hallmark does the Wizard of Oz is exactly as corny as you think it would be. The comparisons are mainly down with pun-based names. So Candace Cameron Bure plays Darcy GALE from KANSAS CITY (the mid-sized Missouri city but let’s go with it) with a dog named BOBO. The character who needs to find his bravery is Riley LYONS and the one who needs to find a heart is Dr. Bridget TINSLEY and the Wicked Witch is named WINONA WEST and her assistants are called FLYING MONKEYS. There is also a “mysterious” CEO who has been in hiding for eons (if you only have a brain, you will figure it out within ten minutes who this is supposed to be). 

Of course, Hallmark isn’t creative enough to truly have all the bonkers fun with the premise that you could. The commercials hinted at black-and-white sequences but the movie avoids them altogether. There’s no hints of a greater Christmas magic helping Darcy on her journey. There’s not really singing (though there is an incredibly hard to sit through dance number). If I Only Had Christmas is not the over-the-top transcendentally bonkers film it could have been. 

Still, there’s enough there for someone to have fun with you have friends to groan with or a bottle of alcohol to accompany you. There really are no Christmas movies quite like Candace Cameron Bure Christmas movies after all.

Watch If: You are a maize maze master, if you once turned around in traffic because you forgot to make your own bed or if you are a curmudgeon who loves the circus.

Skip If: You end text messages with a period, if you look like someone who gets stood up often by their friends or if you do advertising for Starbucks.
