just really wanted to make something flowery and poetic.

the last frame references john everett millais’ painting “christ in the house of his parents”. millais kinda reminds me of joshua sawyer (see: the guy who made fnv and arcade in particular happen) ‘cause i remember him picking one of millais’ paintings for his twitch pause screen or something like that. well, pre-raphaelites in general just scream “josh sawyer” to me. plus this painting’s one of my personal faves ever. the foreshadowing, the symbolism, this distant expression on christ’s face. he looks weirdly aware and ready for his future at the expense of never being in the present. i just see that in arcade’s childhood

replaying fnv on pc and I'm at the part where you have to decide benny's fate and somehow in past playthroughs I either forgot or missed the part where you can ask about him?? It's just so cool I'm so upset at what could have been. like yeah he's a total snake and the chances of us both running vegas without one of us being backstabed by the the other are incredibly slim but it just sucks he's already dead when you finally confront him and even if you do try to let him go there's just nothing or his inevitable death. Bethesda did him so dirty but idk I get it too

Everyone has a teen drama that is such trash that it makes every other teen drama look like Picasso in TV form.

Like I hear way too many people call One Tree Hill "trash" but I have to wonder if those people have seen Dawson's Creek or especially Riverdale. I can't see One Tree Hill as trash cause I have seen REAL trash!

BTW I'm sorry to Dawson's Creek. I feel like a traitor cause I adore Pacey Witter and the relationship between Pacey and Joey but ever since watching One Tree Hill I just can't see Dawson's Creek the same way. There's just no excuse for the way they wrote characters to be so unlikable, absolutely refused to write two women having a completely healthy friendship, the way that they had strengths and found ways to bury every single strength most of the time and specifically wrote to the trash aspects, the way they mistreated the few black characters in that show. Not that One Tree Hill was the most diverse but compared to Dawson's Creek it was. In Dawson's Creek they had about three black characters all of whom they wrote off for no apparent reason and the actors were very upset with how they were being written off (Did the writers listen to them.... no in fact when Obba Babatunde went to the writers and expressed his concerns... they just shooed him off and told him they were gonna do it the way they wanted to).

And i'm not saying that One Tree Hill is perfect. It was created by and largely written by an evil trash weasel man so there's bound to be some trashy aspects but just speaking in general terms... there's a lot more redeeming qualities about the finished product. They elevated the great characters (of which there were many) including but not limited to Nathan, Brooke, Haley, Peyton etc. If they saw that a dynamic was beloved then they wrote to it. Like Haley and Brooke, Nathan and Haley, Brooke and Peyton etc. They added a ton of great side characters who then became main characters when they realized the gold that they had... like Skills for instance. And the actors elevated the writing and sometimes turned the trash into gold. The actors were great, with the major exception of the creator they had some great writers in the writer's room, they had some great female directors, and some of the actors got many chances to direct.

Though I will say that Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams really turned a lot of trash into GOLD in Dawson's Creek. They didn't always have much to work with but they spun it into gold.

I will also say that Riverdale makes Dawson's Creek look like Picasso in TV form lmao

Sure, I'll expand on this. Point of note, this is pretty West Coast/FNV-centric since that's my primary area of interest.

Let's start with defining terms since this is the piss-on-the-poor website. A raider is a bandit, someone who survives by plunder, often roaming in search of things to steal or people to attack. Many raider gangs in the Wasteland are relatively loose allegiances of a few like-minded individuals, but some are established social groups with distinct cultures. The 80s, the Vipers, and the Khans are examples of raider groups that expanded to fit the definition of a tribe—that is, a social division consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect.

The 80s, first outlined in Joshua Sawyer's rpg, are a gang of bandits that operate along the Northern California 80 Freeway and have long contested territory with the White Legs; The Vipers are organized around their shared religion, which is only vaguely described as ancient, but there are what appear to be ritualistic elements to their organization and raiding practices.

The Khans, inspired by Genghis Khan and the Mongols Motorcycle Club, value strength and martial prowess. Founded around 2141, the Khans raided and traded around Shady Sands and Junktown before they were wiped out by the Vault Dweller. Darion, the lone survivor of the original gang, rebuilt it into the New Khans, who in turn were largely destroyed by the Chosen One. Finally, Papa Khan united the fragmented bands and led them to the Mojave in 2267, where they settled. The massacre at Bitter Springs establishes that at this point, the Khans include non-combatants in their group such as children and elders, and until the NCR occupation, Bitter Springs was their home.

I'm going to proceed on the assumption that we all agree that genocide is wrong and set aside the Khans for now, especially because they are a faction that is not immediately hostile to the player, in contrast to the Vipers, Jackals, and Fiends.

Despite their lore, the Vipers don't get anywhere near the development the Khans have and end up in the category of fodder for the player to indiscriminately kill, an act for which you can even gain karma. And this is what brings me to the point of the original post, which is... hey, what the fuck?

I understand from a game mechanics perspective that it's useful to have an unlimited supply of enemies that the player can slaughter for experience points. But, that necessarily dehumanizes the members of that group, which is extra fucked up when you consider that some of them, like the Vipers, are a distinct tribal group.

And even in the case of, say, the Fiends, who we are told are fueled only by bloodlust/dependence on chems and presumably lack any sort of identifiable cultural allegiance, I don't like that it's considered morally good to just kill them all. They're still people.

I would like, especially from a role-playing game, to have more options to talk them down, to get them help for their addictions, and attempt to reintegrate them into society. Maybe that doesn't work on every character, maybe some of them really do just revel in violence and bloodshed and don't want a way out, but I'd like more recognition that raiders aren't a monolith and don't exist in a vacuum, that these are individuals who were driven to where they are by myriad circumstances and an underlying need to survive. It's more realistic and more interesting.

The way the Khans are developed has plenty of problems, certainly, but I appreciate that there was at least some development of who these people are and how they got to be where they are, and I think that's something that's lacking with a lot of the others.

Sorry thinking about fallout again

I know I'm probably reading into it wayyy too much but thinking about the wendigo and how it relates to the unintended ideas of HH is kinda wild.

While Josh Sawyer has stated that the tribals were meant to feature a variety of races and that Daniel was meant to be Asian, all that still leaves a story that very heavily plays into racist and imperialist tropes often centered around Native Americans in particular, notably white saviourism, simply without the savior being white.

Its a plot that draws heavily from the aesthetics of indigenous peoples, even as it tells you they aren't relevant. The paints may be original, but it serves to conjure the same mental connections nonetheless.

This is all to say that DUST featuring the wendigo, perhaps one of the most appropriated elements of indigenous cultures, out of place in Utah solely because it is supposed to match the aesthetics, feels... striking. That a being that has at times been an allegory for colonialism should take the form of genocidal Mormon who wishes to militarize the tribes who follow him Joshua Graham feels ever the more fitting.

Then there's that Daniel, the man who places it upon himself to maintain the innocence of the tribes he stays with, practically infantilizing them, should once again try to take the responsibility of killing the wendigo, only to die. It feels like a distinct rejection of the idea that he is their savior, as learning about the violence the tribes commit in the divide feel as if it's meant to reject that they should neatly fit into the "noble savage" stereotype.

Tw: Rape, Slavery, murder, and general Legion Stuff.

I have complicated feelings about the Legion. I don't think it got the attention it deserved in game. Of course, that is to be blamed on the rushed development, but it still makes me sad.

Joshua Sawyer said he regretted how black-and-white the slavery narrative was in the game, and I have to say I agree. It's incredibly sexist that basically all women are in a mostly gendered slave class. It's incredibly depressing that on a non-Legion run you can't speak to Siri. It's annoying as hell that you can't fight in the ring if you are a female courier, even though the final boss of it is a female soldier. Yes, I get that that's the point. It's frustrating that a female Legion courier is told that the legionnaires want to *rape* her. Yes, I know that's the point, but it's hostile to women who play the game. I feel just as frustrated and disappointed when I think about the fact a low intelligence female Chosen One can be raped by Myron. It's upsetting and uncomfortable, and not in a way I feel furthers the story, because it is subjecting female players to abuse that is all to real to their lives. Male players of the game, by design, will never experience that.

I feel like so much of this could have been solved with more time given to the Legion. There's no Legion companions - The closest you get is Raul, who's neutral on them. You get a tiny corner of the map dedicated to Legion territory, and far less quests than neutral or NCR quests. What about the wives, do the Frumentarii have wives?

The game puts emphasis on how unusual it is for a woman to have as much power in the Legion as the courier can, such as in the line "Last I checked, you needed a weapon between your legs to carry one for Caesar" spoken by Ulysses. It makes me wonder why a nonman Courier would choose the Legion in the first place. If I choose the Legion, what happens when I'm done with the main quest, when I don't have the platinum chip? Do I get enslaved? Do I have to escape and never see the fruits of my labor? Do I get killed? Raped? I know, I know this is the point but it still itches in a bad way.
