Daiya no Ace: The Dramas #10: Third Year Study Group
An explanation…
To keep my brain from rusting I started a project to translate the drama tracks that came with the character song CDs and other stuff relating to Daiya no Ace (because I love them and they’re all hilarious). My disclaimer - I am not a native speaker of Japanese, but I will do my best!
Character Song CD 07 Yuuki Tetsuya Drama Track 02 featuring Tetsu, Jun and Tanba.
Scene: Tetsu, Jun and Tanba have got together – either in the dorm canteen or their classroom – to hold an exam study group for the examinations coming up. The subjects they are most concerned with are those taught by the teachers who run the baseball club, especially Kataoka’s ‘Modern Japanese’ class…
Translator’s Note: Another appearance by the third years! And also, this time, the coach appears! And we learn some interesting trivia about the senpai! This drama is full of word discussions, so I’ve done my best to make it clear!
Tetsu: It’s finally tomorrow, huh.
Jun: There’s seriously not enough time
Tetsu: We can’t ignore Modern Japanese…
Jun: The coach is the teacher, after all. And we have to really be careful of Social Studies and English as well.
Tetsu: Ōta Buchou and Takashima Fuku-buchou’s classes, huh.
Jun: Even at the very worst we need to get above the average mark. And more to the point, where’s Tanba? I said I’d study too because he said he was going to do exam revision!
Tetsu: He said he was going to wash off the sweat of training and then come.
Jun: He’s in the bath, huh. How long is he planning to spend in there?
The door opens and Tanba enters.
Tanba: (Stretches and sighs).
Jun: Oi, you finally turned up, Tanba! How long did you take in the bath, dammit?
Tanba: I shaved my head. Completely.
Jun: You’re really laid back, you know. We have exams from tomorrow.
Tanba: I did it to focus my emotions.
Tetsu: Mm. It seems like the sparkle on your head is even greater than usual. (I think he pats it).
Tanba: Hey! Don’t touch it, Yuuki! I just got myself hyped up and you’ll ruin it!
Jun: Hey, let’s get down to it, guys!
Tetsu: Mm. What shall we begin with?
Tanba: I want to start with figuring out a strategy to tackle Modern Japanese.
Tetsu: Because it’s the coach’s class, huh?
Tanba: That’s a part of it, but it’s also the first exam tomorrow morning. If we can do a good paper then, it will set us up with a good vibe for the rest.
Tetsu: Mm. You’re quite right.
Jun: Yosh! Let’s start with Modern Japanese! Someone get the textbook open, dammit!
(they get to work).
Tanba: Hrm, it seems like the key to Modern Japanese is definitely reading prowess.
Tetsu: The power to read a paragraph, and understand the contents and meaning from doing so, huh.
Jun: I’m always reading books, so I’m pretty confident about that.
Tanba: Me too. What about you, Yuuki?
Tetsu: I often read books that examine good moves and strategy.
Jun: Those are shougi books, right? That’s not helping your reading ability, but more like your ability to carry out exercises.
Tanba: Yosh. In that case I’ll lend you a book written by the person I respect the most.
Yuuki: (takes the book): Okamoto Tarou. (Translator’s note – I believe he was a Japanese artist…but am not quite sure how that feeds into what Jun and Tanba say, so I may be missing a more native Japanese joke here. Or maybe Tanba is just really into abstract art.)
Jun: That’s a book on guidance for life, right?
Tanba: Yes. It resolves all the troubles I have and answers all my questions perfectly. It’s really beneficial.
Jun: But it’s not going to come up on the exam.
Tetsu: I’d really like a book that’s going to help with my results.
Tanba: In that case, Isashiki, don’t you have anything?
Jun: Huh? Me?
Tanba: Yeah. Something relevant to the exam.
Jun: I have, but…
Tetsu: Please lend it to me, Jun.
Jun: Tsch. I guess it can’t be helped. Here you go.
Tetsu and Tanba gasp.
Tetsu: Chihayafuru?! (Translator note: I had to stop the drama to laugh at this the first time I listened to it. I also love Chihayafuru. Go Jun!)
Tanba: Shoujo manga?
Jun: (defensive): What, you got a problem with it?!
Tanba: Uh…well…no…that’s not what I…
Jun: It helps with reading skill and with learning the hyakunin isshū as well! (Translator note: If you’re not familiar with Chihayafuru, it features a card game called Karuta in which players have to match the top and bottom halves of waka poems before their opponent. These poems come from an ancient collection of traditional Japanese waka poetry called the hyakunin isshū).
Tetsu: (Serious) It certainly sounds useful.
Tanba: But…Isashiki…The hyakunin isshū aren’t on the syllabus this time around.
Jun: (angry): What?! In that case, what about Asaki Yumemishi! (Another manga, based around the ancient text Genji Monogatari, also known as the ‘Tale of Genji’)
Tetsu: Genji Monogatari, huh…
Tanba: That’s also outside the syllabus.
Jun: WHAT?!
Tanba: In any case, both of them are based around things from Classical Japanese, not Modern Japanese! Let’s focus on Modern Japanese!
Tetsu: Right. Then what other skills are likely to be tested?
Tanba: Vocabulary knowledge, probably. Whether we know the correct meaning for idioms or kanji.
Jun: Oh! In that case, let’s try some practice questions!
Tanba: That’s a good idea. The one asking questions and the one answering them will both get something from that.
Tetsu: Yosh. Then I’ll ask some questions.
Jun: All right! Bring it, Tetsu!
Tetsu: Mm. Kanji or idiom meanings, huh…first is, ‘hachiku no ikioi’ (literally, the force taken to split bamboo, idiomatically, an irresistible force).
Tanba: Yes!
Tetsu: Tanba.
Tanba: To advance with fierce energy, right?
Jun: Pretty much the same thing as taking the national title, then!
Tetsu: Correct. Next. ‘Kouitten’ (literally, one red point, idiomatically, a woman that stands out from the crowd).
Tanba: Yes!
Tetsu: Tanba.
Tanba: Takashima-sensei..? (Translator’s note: Something you want to tell us there, Tanba?)
Jun: No, more like one of the manager girls, surely?
Tetsu: Nope, those answers are no good. (he answers very matter-of-factly). Next. ‘Kendou juurai’ (Literally this one makes no sense, idiomatically to regroup to try again)
Tanba: Yes!
Tetsu: Tanba.
Tanba: Finding the power to try again at something you already failed at once. To turn the tables back on a defeat!
Jun: Just you wait, Inajitsu! Next time we will DEFINITELY WIN!
Tetsu: Correct.
Tanba: You really know these answers well, Yuuki.
Jun: How did you learn them?
Tetsu: I didn’t do anything particularly special. I just watched a lot of TV dramas…and they naturally just stuck in my head.
Jun: That reminds me, you like Yorozuya Kinnosuke, don’t you? (Translator’s Note: A famous Japanese actor, who performed on both stage and screen).
Tanba: From watching period drama, huh…ah! But now we really need to get back to doing Modern Japanese!
The door of the room opens and Kataoka enters. Maybe Tanba’s sudden flurry back to study is because he sees the coach coming!
Kataoka: What’s that about Modern Japanese?
Jun: C…Coach!
Kataoka: What are you guys doing here this late at night? Don’t tell me you think you can overnight cram my class material, do you?
Jun: Of course not!
Tetsu: We were just making some final clarifications together.
Tanba has basically frozen like a statue and is making incoherent sounds.
Jun: Don’t freeze up, Tanba, say something!
Kataoka: The most important thing in studying is to build on it, day by day. You understand that, right?
The boys: Yes sir!
Kataoka: I believe you can apply the dedicated attitude you have towards baseball to the approach you take to your studies. I am expecting good results from you all.
Jun: Yes sir!
Kataoka: Mm! It will soon be the time to close up. Yuuki, hurry up and go home.
Tetsu: Yes sir!
Kataoka: Isashiki and Tanba, you should go get some sleep.
Jun and Tanba: Yes sir!
(he leaves).
Jun: Ah, that was a shock.
Tanba: My palms are sweating.
Tetsu: Tonight’s study group is disbanded then, I guess.
Tanba: The coach said he expects good results from us…what do you suppose that means?
Jun: Getting higher than the class average is probably not going to cut it.
Tetsu: He probably wants us to aim for the top rankings.
Tanba: What should we do…
Jun: No point in flapping about it! The exam is tomorrow. All we can do is take it on the best we can!
Tetsu: I don’t know about results, but if we leave our fortunes to heaven, we can do our best.
Tanba: Yes!
Tetsu: Tanba.
Tanba: ‘Ichikabachika’, right? (to sink or swim).
Tetsu: Tanba. You are correct.
Jun: You nailed it.
Tanba: Uh. But…that one isn’t on the syllabus.
Tetsu: What?!

your top 5 anime couples?
ok so the funny thing is i wrote out my answer to this ask a few days ago and just as i was publishing it my internet decided to die so i lost the whole thing and got rly sad. but i’m back now and perhaps with some better answers so maybe this worked out to your benefit lol
edward/winry (fullmetal alchemist) → this is pretty self explanatory but nonetheless, i adore the potential with these two. i think there’s a lot of subtleties to their relationship that aren’t touched upon enough in fandom, like how far their intimate understanding of each other goes, how their fears for each other manifest in the work that they do every day, etc etc. they’re a wonderful portrayal of the childhood friends to lovers trope just by way of the fact that they know each other down to a microscopic level. like i think it can’t be overstated enough just how amazing it is that a part of ed’s life is in winry’s hands and a part of her life is in his hands, and how that builds upon the foundations of their unbreakable trust in each other. i also love how their relationship is built on the fact that they’ve essentially been the heads of their households since they were kids. that burden and sense of responsibility they share in is so palpable and esp fun to explore in the post canon when they finally have time to focus on themselves and what they want to do with their work and their family in the long term, i love to think about it!
tsumugu/chisaki (nagi no asukara) → there isn’t a lot i can write here without spoiling the events of the series itself, but to describe the basics of these two, it comes down to a sort of complicated love polygon that they’re caught in the middle of, and i love how it plays out here. chisaki has loved one of her childhood friends for her entire life, so when her feelings start to change and she develops them for tsumugu instead, she’s weighted with this intense sense of guilt that parallels to a traumatic event that occurs mid series. chisaki is someone who hates the idea of change and growing up and tsumugu as first her friend and then her potential love interest is someone who subtly tries to challenge that mindset and help her grow, all while caring very deeply for her. it’s a really nice case of push and pull, and what amplifies it even more are all of the sea associated metaphors that their relationship is entwined with. chisaki is like this tumultuous and unpredictable sea, while tsumugu is the boy in the boat who patiently weathers her storms. it’s magnificent (and on netflix)
junichi/yurika (kids on the slope) → the funniest thing to me about this manga is that unlike most ppl my greatest takeaway from it was the relationship between these two as opposed to the main focus between the homoerotic, catholically symbolized best friends (which is still impeccable), but i have my reasons! i like these two bc they depict what a mature relationship between two people, no matter how damaged, ought to look like. when they first meet, jun is charismatic, flirtatious, and daring, yurika haughty and alarmed but also intrigued. there’s a brief potential there for some magic, and then they don’t see each other again for several months. the next time they meet, all the previous facades have been shattered. he’s been disowned by his family and now lives alone, depressed and jaded by the world, and she’s growing increasingly frustrated with the impositions put upon her as a pretty girl from a rich family growing up in 60s japan. the conversations between them thereafter are very charged and challenging as they poke and prod at each other’s world views, but it’s ultimately a healthy banter that’s necessary for them to come to an understanding and move forward. jun fears hurting the people he loves and isolates himself as a result, and yurika pushes back at those walls and limited thinking bc they’ve been towering over her all her life. it’s just a beautiful exploration in balance esp since they’re a couple that has to make it on their own without their families’ support, so they need mutual understanding to survive
marco/connie (gangsta.) → the relationship between these two is pretty complex. marco is originally a born and bred child mercenary, but at a point in time he begins to harbor some doubts about the work he does with his “friends”, and the turning point in his life becomes the death of connie’s parents at their hands. connie cries these angry, unforgiving tears and stares at him with so much hatred in that moment that it rocks him to his core, and a series of events leads to him abandoning the mercenary lifestyle and completely starting over in an effort to repay kindness to the people he’s only ever harmed. what’s interesting about these two is that connie rly holds him to this endeavor. she’s constantly skeptical of him and she doesn’t like him nor holds these great hopes for him to improve as a person. she makes no moves to help him initially when he’s mocked and jeered at for attempting to start fresh, and why should she? he ruined her life. but the interesting thing is that marco’s persistence when it comes to doing good and wholeheartedly repenting is something that begins to intrigue her, and slowly she starts to let him into her life. first as a delivery boy she greets at the door, then as maybe an acquaintance, then a friend, and somewhere along the way, a lover. it’s a really dark relationship (explored in more detail in gangsta. cursed) but i love how it’s explored and how they push each other to be better people
taichi/arata (chihayafuru) → if you know anything of this fandom you know this is the unpopular choice, but nonetheless, my reread this past year enlightened me to it. i feel like these two really take rivals to lovers to the next level. their initial friendship as kids barely touches the surface of some of the insecurities each of them harbors, but as they grow up apart from each other there’s this simultaneous loathing and longing that manifests in each of them for the other that’s really amazing to watch unfold. there’s so many backhanded comments between them followed by bouts of remorse and self-hatred, there’s secret expressions of just how happy they feel when they’re able to play each other, the tension that exists between them as they fight not just for chihaya’s love but for the love of karuta is so so intense and devastating, and ultimately it’s a really well fleshed-out exploration between childhood friends vested with different life experiences that ultimately put them at odds with each other. the way their relationship has developed up until now in the manga is just crazy to see and i sometimes wonder if they’d be more popular had they been straight lmao

Anime i’ve Watched
That begin with a C!
Yep this is how i’m going to bring over all the anime and manga i’ve watched and posted about on the old blog. It’s not so detailed but it will have to do. Anything new I watch or read from this point on will have their own posts.
Cardcaptor Sakura:
Genres: adventure, comedy, drama, magic, romance, fantasy, school, shoujo
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Sakura Kinomoto is your garden-variety ten-year-old fourth grader, until one day, she stumbles upon a mysterious book containing a set of cards. Unfortunately, she has little time to divine what the cards mean because she accidentally stirs up a magical gust of wind and unintentionally scatters the cards all over the world. Suddenly awakened from the book, the Beast of the Seal, Keroberos (nicknamed Kero-chan), tells Sakura that she has released the mystical Clow Cards created by the sorcerer Clow Reed. The Cards are no ordinary playthings. Each of them possesses incredible powers, and because they like acting independently, Clow sealed all the Cards within a book. Now that the Cards are set free, they pose a grave danger upon the world, and it is up to Sakura to prevent the Cards from causing a catastrophe! Appointing Sakura the title of "the Cardcaptor" and granting her the Sealed Key, Keroberos tasks her with finding and recapturing all the Cards. Alongside her best friend Tomoyo Daidouji, and with Kero-chan's guidance, Sakura must learn to balance her new secret duty with the everyday troubles of a young girl involving love, family, and school, all while she takes flight on her magical adventures as Sakura the Cardcaptor. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2000 with a total of 70 episodes.
My Thoughts: A childhood classic that’s probably due for a rewatch! Give me that nostalgia! Gonna need to watch the English opening though. Just recalling how much the artwork in older anime tends to make me cringe though looking back Cardcaptor doesn’t look all that bad.
Charlotte:
Genres: drama, school, superpower
Tumblr media
Synopsis: While on the surface Yuu Otosaka appears to be just another charming and intelligent teenager, he has a secret—he has the ability to slip into people's minds and fully control their body for five seconds at a time. Yuu has been using this skill for years to gain the highest grades, which allowed him to enter a prestigious high school. When the enigmatic Nao Tomori catches Yuu using his power, she coerces him and his sister Ayumi into transferring to Hoshinoumi Academy, a school for students with supernatural abilities. The student council of the school, led by Nao, is tasked with secretly tracking down adolescents who abuse their powers. Yuu is forced to join the student council and together, they face formidable challenges that bring him closer to the shocking truth that his own, seemingly incomplete ability, might be more powerful than he could have ever imagined. An original story from Jun Maeda, creator of Angel Beats and Clannad, Charlotte explores the supernatural lives of these teenagers and the price they must pay for being special. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 13 episodes. Also has a separate solo special episode.
My Thoughts: If I remember correctly the final few episodes are what really stood out to me in this anime. The beginning was alright but just after the half way mark is when it really blew me away. A slow starter if you will. I’m a sucker for some high intensity emotional drama and i’m pretty sure that’s what happened here. Whether that makes this a good anime or not is debatable. Perhaps a rewatch is in order?
Cheer Danshi!! (Cheer Boys!!):
Genres: sports, drama, school
Tumblr media
Synopsis: After suffering from a shoulder injury, shy first-year university student Haruki Bandou gladly takes the opportunity to give up judo, failing to find happiness in the sport regardless of his family owning a dojo. He did not expect, however, that his best friend Kazuma Hashimoto would also decide to leave their university's judo club at the same time as him. Despite Haruki's protests, Kazuma already has plans for a new and revolutionary activity: a cheerleading team made up of only men. Although heavily reluctant, Haruki ends up helping his friend set up the team. Through sheer determination, and with support from their newfound club members, Haruki and Kazuma persist in founding the Breakers, the first ever all-male cheerleading team of Meishiin University, slowly making history in spite of the feminine tag attached to the sport of cheerleading and the prejudices, physical challenges, and self-doubts that inevitably follow. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 6/10
Finished airing in 2016 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: Cheer boys! That’s it. That’s all there really is to it. Not a great or memorable anime. Just wasn’t for me.
Chihayafuru:
Genres: drama, game, josei, school, slice of life, sports
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Chihaya Ayase, a strong-willed and tomboyish girl, grows up under the shadow of her older sister. With no dreams of her own, she is contented with her share in life till she meets Arata Wataya. The quiet transfer student in her elementary class introduces her to competitive karuta, a physically and mentally demanding card game inspired by the classic Japanese anthology of Hundred Poets. Captivated by Arata's passion for the game and inspired by the possibility of becoming the best in Japan, Chihaya quickly falls in love with the world of karuta. Along with the prodigy Arata and her haughty but hard-working friend Taichi Mashima, she joins the local Shiranami Society. The trio spends their idyllic childhood days playing together, until circumstances split them up. Now in high school, Chihaya has grown into a karuta freak. She aims to establish the Municipal Mizusawa High Competitive Karuta Club, setting her sights on the national championship at Omi Jingu. Reunited with the now indifferent Taichi, Chihaya's dream of establishing a karuta team is only one step away from becoming true: she must bring together members with a passion for the game that matches her own. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9.5/10
Finished airing in 2012 with a total of 25 episodes.
My Thoughts: I freaking love Chihayafuru. Sports, friendship and all that good stuff is what this anime has to offer! One of my top 5 series of all time with my all time favourite female lead. Highly recommend!
Chihayafuru 2:
Genres: drama, game, josei, school, slice of life, sports

As their second year of high school rolls around, Chihaya and her fellow teammates must recruit new members, train their minds and bodies alike, and battle the formidable opponents that stand in their way to the championship title. Meanwhile, Chihaya's childhood friend, Arata Wataya, the prodigy who introduced her to karuta, rediscovers his lost love for the old card game. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

My Rating: 10/10
Finished airing in 2013 with a total of 25 episodes.
My Thoughts: The good times keep on rolling and i’m even more in love with the series and its characters! An obvious must watch for fans of the previous season.
Chihayafuru 3:
Genres: games, slice of life, josei, school, sports
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Winning the high school team tournament was a great accomplishment for the Mizusawa members. Each of them has made great strides in improving themselves, and the victory symbolizes how far they've come. But after accomplishing one goal, their individual aims are within reach. Chihaya Ayase has her sights set on Wakamiya Shinobu and the title of Queen, and now that Taichi Mashima has made it into Class A, he can finally compete against Arata Wataya. Everyone in Mizusawa wants to get better, and there's no telling what the future holds if they keep trying. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2020 with a total of 24 episodes.
My Thoughts: Blessed with a third season and I can honestly say that i’m ever so thankful! Finally getting a little hint of romance with this third season as well. I can only hope there will be a season 4!
Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro (Chio's School Road):
Genres: comedy, seinen
Tumblr media
Synopsis: For the average Japanese high school student, walking to school can be a chore, but for first-year Chio Miyamo, it's always an adventure. Constantly running late due to her long night sessions playing video games, she is forced to come up with new routes to make it to Samejima Private Academy on time. On her many bizarre journeys to school, Chio contends with obstacles like street-blocking detours, overzealous kabaddi players, and befuddled motorcycle gang leaders. But these minor hindrances are no match for the special ops training that Chio, AKA the legendary assassin "Bloody Butterfly," has received from her extensive gaming obsession. Together with her best friends Manana Nonomura and Yuki Hosokawa, Chio will do whatever it takes to avoid her school's harsh penalties for tardiness. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2018 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: A perfect and hilarious situational comedy. Plus a glasses wearing female lead to boot! Highly recommend for those looking to watch something short and light. Great series for when you’re having a bad or off day in my opinion.
Chobits:
Genres: sci-fi, comedy, drama, romance, ecchi, seinen
Tumblr media
Synopsis: When computers start to look like humans, can love remain the same? Hideki Motosuwa is a young country boy who is studying hard to get into college. Coming from a poor background, he can barely afford the expenses, let alone the newest fad: Persocoms, personal computers that look exactly like human beings. One evening while walking home, he finds an abandoned Persocom. After taking her home and managing to activate her, she seems to be defective, as she can only say one word, "Chii," which eventually becomes her name. Unlike other Persocoms, however, Chii cannot download information onto her hard drive, so Hideki decides to teach her about the world the old-fashioned way, while studying for his college entrance exams at the same time. Along with his friends, Hideki tries to unravel the mystery of Chii, who may be a "Chobit," an urban legend about special units that have real human emotions and thoughts, and love toward their owner. But can romance flourish between a Persocom and a human? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 10/10
Finished airing in 2002 with a total of 26 episodes.
My Thoughts: One of my first animes and one that really caught and kept my attention. Character driven and comedic with a bit of a darker twist. Be forewarned though this one has some typical, eye roll inducing pervy scenes that seem to serve little purpose. Asid from that though it really is an interesting and beautiful stoyr. I actually have the complete manga series and have been meaning to read it for ages... maybe i’ll get around to it this summer. Dream big!

Umi wo Wataru Kaze (Spice and Wolf Character Song)
Michizou Tachihara - Yuu Hayashi
Ambivalence (Kuroko no Basket Ending)
Rough Diamonds (Shokugeki No Soma: Ni No Sara Opening)
These are both songs from SCREEN Mode which sang the second season opening.
Sakunosuke Oda - Junichi Suwabe
I See the Light - Houko Kuwashima & Junichi Suwabe (Tangled)
Rise (Fate Stay Night Character Song)
Motojirou Kajii - Wataru Hatano
Hikari (Hamatora ED)
You Only Live Once (Yuri on Ice ED)

Elise - Sora Amamiya
Feather Ronde
Chikai (Nanatsu no Taizai Season 2 Ending 2)
Skyreach (Akame Ga Kill Opening)
She is a member of a group called TrySail! She’s the oldest and most experienced but also the most airheaded (to say the least). She debuted as a singer. Feather Ronde isn’t connected to an anime. It’s part of her album.
Ace - Daisuke Ono
[COVER] Stand Proud (Jojo OP)
Lunar Maria
I’ll be honest, I don’t like his singing that much, and the first one is more of a gag thing.
Gin Akutagawa - Shiina Natsukawa
Parade
[Trysail] Zoku Owarimonogatari Theme Song – azure
She’s also a member of TrySail! She’s the youngest member of the group. The first song is her by herself.
The Guild
Francis Scott Fitzgerald - Takahiro Sakurai
Be All Right
Shiro to Kuro
When You Wish Upon a Star
He no longer sings his character songs but will sing on certain occasions. He’s good friends with Kenichi Suzumura (who plays Katai Tayama) and is a member of his agency.
Lucy Maud Montgomery - Kana Hanazawa
Renai Circulation (Monogatari Opening)
Futari Shizuka (Otome Youkai Zakuro Ending)
Howard Phillips Lovecraft - Shunsuke Takeuchi
Paradigm Box (Caligula Effect Opening)
Sunaga
The first one is a duet with Chiharu Sawashiro who is Miyuki Sawashiro’s little brother. Sunaga is more of a surprise song. It’s actually kind of cringy.
Edgar Allan Poe - Toshiyuki Morikawa
Eternal Ring
Fuyu no Semi
Other
Karma - Miyu Irino
Sayonara Baby
Monet
Fyodor Dostoyevsky - Akira Ishida
Katsura Raps
This is real music right here. He doesn’t sing character songs anymore because he thinks that his singing isn’t worth paying for.
Ango Sakaguchi - Jun Fukuyama
Midnight Occult Civil Servants Opening
Hikari (Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic Character Song)
Mizuki Tsujimura - Rie Takahashi
Stay Alive (Re:Zero Ending 2)
Chiisana Koi no Uta (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san Ending 5)
Agatha Christie - Maaya Sakamoto
Gravity (Wolf’s Rain OST)
Sonic Boom (Tsubasa Chronicles)
[FULL] Song Recommendation List
She has one of the best voices. That’s all.

I’ve been promising this post for a while now. I did a voice actor version some time ago and it was one of my favourite lists to put together. I think you guys enjoyed it too.
As we all know, an actor’s performance can really drag down an anime. There’s something heartbreaking about a painfully wooden performance in the middle of a wonderful story that rips you right out of the fantasy. On the bright side, I’ve seen more than a few characters go from boring to endearing on the strength of an actor’s charisma. Voice actors don’t have as much to work with as conventional actors. They can’t rely on body movements or smouldering looks to get their message across. So it’s doubly impressive when they manage to convey subtle emotion and complex feelings though inflection and tone alone.
And for me, these ladies do just that.
Today let us celebrate the artistry that goes into bringing some of our favourite characters to life. In no real order we have!
5. Aoi Yuuki
I don’t care how petty it sounds, I’m just going to put this right here. This young woman is shorter than me!!! A musician and traditional actress, Aoi unique voice has made her quite successful in the field. Here are a few selected roles out of the tons she has had:
Hana – Ben-To
Tsuyu – My Hero Academia
Mina – Vampire Bund
The Energetic Ringo – Daily Lives of HighSchool Boys
Sosuke – Free!! (surprised? – I was)
Victorique – Gosick
Mihoshi – Gundam
Russia – Hetalia
Kino – Kino’s journey
Futaba – Persona 5
Iris – Pokemon
Mélie – Radiant
Shinra – Durarara!!
Sunako – Shiki
Borr – SSSS.Gridman
Tanya – Saga of Tanya the Evil
Oh yeah – she’s also Madoka in some magical girl show…
She’s set to play Touka and Boogiepop in the upcoming remake and I am psyched for this!
Not to mention roles in March Comes In Like a Lion, ACCA 13, Asobi Asobase, Welcome to the Ballroom, Gangsta, Gintama, Goblin Slayer, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, Hyakka, Hyouka, Your Name, last exile, One Punch Man, Seraph of the End, Sword Art Online II, Tanaka-kun, Tokyo Ghoul, Snafu, Yuru Yuri, and I seriously skipped over most of them. This lady works!
The surprisingly raspy quality of her vocals, and the counterintuitive depth of her tone makes her suitable for a wide range of diverse characters. A small actress with a big voice! Irresistible.
4. Chiwa Saito
Miss Saito has been acting for some time which means she’s had the chance to amass a pretty impressive portfolio. One of my favourite random facts out there, is that she is part of a voice acting groups called “MORE PEACH SUMMER SNOW”. That’s the best name ever. I’m going to rname Buddy that. (His actional name if Sir Buddy Livingston Master Chief Brown). Sadly, she is taller than me.
Yona – Yona of the Dawn
Aika – Aria
Hitagi – Monogatari series
Sigyn – Break Blade
Yuki – Vampire Bund
Chloe – Fate/Kaelid series
Natsumi – Keroro
the fantastic Riko – Kuroko’s Basketball
Louise- Gudam 00
Anita – R.O.D. TV
Kotori – rewrite
Meru – Zetsoubu Sensei
Nadeshiko – Yuru Yuri
She’s also Homura in some magical girl show…I swear I didn’t know this before researching for this post. I never realized how much I liked the Madoka casting before!
Of course there’s like a billion more titles but I’m going to name these ones because, reasons: Amanchu, Arakawa Under the Bridge, Boccano, Berserk, Dog & Scissors, D-Frag, Daily Lives of HighSchool Boys, Gintama, Girls Bravo, Kino’s journey, Last Exile, Log Horizon, Lyrica Nanoha, Murder Princess (I just like this title) One Piece, Sward Art Online, I’m just going to stop now.
You can actually hear her sing in some roles and she truly has a beautiful singing voice. It has a rich timber and she obviously has a great ear for melody. If ever she chose to switch career paths to the musical instead, I’m sure she’d have a great future. We would miss her as an actress though so let’s not encourage that!
3. Megumi Hayashibara
A more classical voice actress and one of the best known in Japan, Megumi almost became a nurse instead. There’s a certain personality that goes along with choosing a career in nursing. Caring but also resilient. You can see that peek through a bit in Megumi’s character and acting choice. Then again, there are so many to pick from I could probably make an argument for any character type.
Pai and IV – 3×3 eyes
Ai – Detective Conan
Haruko – FLCL Progressive
Haruka – Love Hina
Todomatsu – Osomatsu-kun
Paprika and Chiba – Paprika
Musashi – Pokemon
Ranma – Ranma 1/2
Lime – Saber Marionette J
Anna – Shaman King
Lina – Slayers
Ai – Video Girl Ai
Genkai – Yuu Yuu Hakusho
Hello Kitty…this woman is Hello Kitty
The incomparable Faye Valentine – Cowboy Bebop
Probably best known as Rei Ayanami – Evangelion
She can also be heard in Blue Exorcist, Bakuretsu Hunters, Sailor Moon, Blue Seed, Chihayafuru 2, Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Macross Plus, Lupin III, Maison Ikkoku, One Piece, Project A-ko, Shadow Skill, the Doreamons, Tenchi Muyou, and obviously a million more shows.
This lady’s body of work speaks for itself. I have to say I was already pretty amazed that spunky, opinionated Faye, with her womanly register and quiet monotone Rei were played by the same person, add in Hell Kitty to the mix and my mind is a little broken…and then you have comedy queen Ranma. This is the type of career you look up to!
2. Romi Park
Did you know that Romi studied Korean in university. I just find that intriguing, obviously she’s always liked languages. Ok I’m beating about the bush so let me just say it, miss Park’s performance was one of the best parts of FMA: Brotherhood for me. I literally caught myself in the middle of scenes just going, OMG the acting is phenomenal. I’ve heard great things about the English language cast but you really are missing ouy if you didn’t catch this performance.
Tōshirō Hitsugaya –  Bleach
Teresa – Claymore
Akane – Danganronpa
Tanaka – Daily Lives of High School Boys
Igarashi – Deadman Wonderland
Kenichi – Cyber Coil
Ken – Digimon
Sena – Eyeshield 21
Natsume – Gakuen Alice
Walter – Hellsing Ultimate
Switzerland – Hetalia
Angelina – Black Butler
Taiga – Major
Falis – Murder Princess (love this title)
Temari – Naruto
My precious, precious Naoto – Persona 4
Jiro – Pokemon
Syrup – Precure
Alma – Radiant
Zoe Hange – Attack on Titan
Everyone’s favourite rocker Nana Osaki – Nana
And of course Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist
And if that wasn’t enough, you can hear her in Air Master, Beelzebub, Blue Dragon , Clannad After story, Detective Conan, Devil May Cry, Garo, Granblue Fantasy, Hunter x Hunter, Kill la Kill, Lupin III, Gundam 00, One Piece (everyone is in this), RahXephon, Sengoku Basara, RDG, Samurai 7, Terra Formars (cause it’s terrible), Aquarion, White Album
Romi Parks has the most devastatingly emotional voice I know. She often plays calm, cool and collected genius type characters (a lot of boys as you can see) but when an emotional contrast is needed, she really knows how to deliver, making her characters feel so real and raw.  One of the greatest performers in my opinion, she tends to make me want to see a show just to hear what she can do with the character.
Honorable Mentions
Ami Koshimizu
C,mon, she Ryuko from Kill la Kill. Always loved that sexy alto voice! Apparently she was also both Hiro and Naomi in the recent Darling and the Franxx. I loved her as Ibuki in Danganronpa. She was Kallen in Code Geass, Holo in Spice and Wolf and Yuiko in Persona. Obviously I’m skipping over st of her work including some very big roles. I suggest you look her up! The only reason she isn’t on the list proper is that I simply haven’t seen that many of her shows even though a lot are very popular.
1. Megumi Ogata
OK fine so this is a subjective choice. Well they all are really, it’s my top 5 list. Fact is, I’ve been a fan of Megumi Ogata for a long long time and I’m just always going to be. She’s the first voice talent I ever learned about and I absolutely love her work. Sure, she might have voiced a few of my anime crushes but surely that did not influence my choice in any way…. She’s much taller than me.
Ayato – Angel Beats
Haruka (Sailor Uranus) – Sailor Moon*
Jun – Captain Tsubasa
Yukito and Yue – Cardcaptor Sakura*
Makoto – Danganronpa
Nagito – Danganronpa***
Shinji – Evangelion*
Izumi Rio – Searching for the Full Moon*
the terrifying Fairies – Humanity has Declined
Cranberry – Raising Project*
Ichigou Fujimoto – Magical girl Ore
Ken – Persona 3
Yukimura – Samurai Deeper Kyo*
Akagi – Slam Dunk
Valkyrie – UFO Princess Valkyrie
Yuugi – Yu Gi Oh!*
Karuma – Yuu Yuu Hakusho*
And just o drive the point home, here are a few more at random. If you want to full list, you’ll have to look it up. I just can’t type that much! Bleach, Detective Conan, et Backers, Great Teacher Onizuka, Kino’s Journey, Magic Knight Rayearth, Tamayura, Tokyo Mew Mew,
Megumi Ogata is a revered veteran in the field. Comparing Nagito to Makoto (purposefully similar characters with a lot of very similar lines) will reveal her mastery on inflection and subtle vocalisation to embody a character way beyond their dialogue. Anyone still under the illusion that voice acting is simply reading your lines, please see master Ogata’s work!
Good list isn’t it!?! I discover new voice talent all the time mind you. I’ll be watching a show and suddenly realize that the actor is doing fantastic work. And I’m always so happy when I discover a new favourite. So please, share yours with me!
that was a lot of pics to find….

Last song I listened to: *check playlist on phone* Karma by Bump Of Chicken.
Tumblr media
Last movie I watched: I don’t know which one was the last => Kyou No Kira-kun (Today’s Kira-kun), I remember being really disappointed. The manga is really good, I don’t know HOW they could still mess it up so much. The nice thing about the manga is that even if the theme is melo, the atmosphere isn’t. The movie is just a (bad) tear-jerker.
Tumblr media
or => Ishuukan Friends (One Week Friends). I really enjoyed it. I was waiting for the friendship and not the romance, and it delivered. It was touching, the acting wasn’t bad. They followed the manga atmosphere and that’s important. (it was still more melo than the manga, but okay)
Tumblr media
Top 3 fictional characters: Wowowowowowowowow. That’s way too difficult. From anywhere? Manga, movie, drama, tv-shows, books, etc?
There’s so much different way to love a character... I will do a manga/drama one.
3 ) Because I love watching his growth : Natsume from Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume’s Book Of Friends). Because she’s such a realistically badass character : Seo Yun from Solomon’s Perjury.

2 ) Because she deserved everything she ever wanted : Aki from Joô No Hana (Queen’s Flower). Because he is such an interesting (and very well-played) villain : Lee Jun Ho from I Remember You (Hello Monster)

1 ) Because he’s my ultimate best girl : Mikorin from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Because he’s the best and most interesting teacher : Suzuki from Suzuki-sensei.

Bonus : All of my anime & manga best girl/guy : Onodera (Nisekoi), Asuna (Negima), Eva (UQ Holder), Senjougahara (Monogatari Series), Rem (Re:Zero), Yoshino (Masamune-kun No Revenge), Charlotte (Infinite Stratos), etc... / Taichi (Chihayafuru), Ren (Skip Beat), Shin Ah (Akatsuki No Yona), Kyo (Fruit Basket), Kaname (Vampire Knight), Sempai (Watashi Ga Motete Dousunda), Kikuchi (Ao Haru Ride), etc...
For making those endless discussions with my friends (IRL and Online) as to WHY they were the best. And for all the tears I poured when they didn’t get the guy/girl.
Tumblr media
Top 3 ship : I’ll make two non-canon/canon manga & drama one.
3 ) Because she’s one of my rare best girl who get the guy, and I love their relationship : Araragi X Senjougahara. Because he’s my best girl and he needs his guy : Mayu X Mikorin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2 ) Because he was always here for her, even when she never saw it (and because I don’t like the cliché “first love always win, even when he’s never here”) : Taichi x Chihaya from Chihayafuru. Because they broke my heart  : Katsuya x Kyoko from Fruit Basket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1 ) Because she made him experience love and he made her forgive love : Ren x Kyoko from Skip Beat. Because she protected him against everything, and because he will always makes her smile : Kyo x Tohru from Fruit Basket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3 ) Because I don’t know why they were fighting for a girl, when they were obviously much more into each other : Dong Soo X Yeo from Warrior Baek Dong Soo. Because it wasn’t a problem of timing : Taek x Duk Seon from Reply 1988.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2 ) Because I will never understand this drama ending : Tae Kwang x Eun Bi from School 2015. Because they are realistically perfect : Joon Hyeong x Bok Joo from Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo.

1 ) Because she was beautifully in love with him : Ando x Nozomi from N No Tame Ni. Because he was beautifully in love with her : Naruse x Nozomi from N No Tame Ni.

Currently reading: A lot of things. But right now, the book on my floor is the second book of La Passe-Miroir serie : Les Disparus Du Clairdelune (seems like an english traduction is ongoing). And the manga on my bed is the second book  of To Your Eternity.
