Four B-52 Stratofortress bombers designated for the 5ª Bomber Wing of Minot Air Base, North Dakota, landed at Andersen Air Base, Guam, in late January, as part of a Bomber Task Force (BTF) to support strategic deterrent missions aimed at strengthening international order rules based on the Indo-Pacific region.
While deployed in Guam, B-52 operations and support personnel are assigned to the 23º Expeditionary Bomber Squadron. The 23º EBS will integrate alongside the Allies and partners to demonstrate the U.S. commitment to security and stability throughout the region.
Designed to show the U.S. ability to deter, deny and dominate, BTF missions aim to influence and deter the aggression of opponents or competitors.

Reacting to the arrival of the aircraft, Captain Zachary "Smash" Holmes, arms officer of the 23º EBS, said it was great "finally to have some iron on the ground".
"It's great to finally receive our crews, so we're ready to leave and participate in the mission, as well as prepare our maintenance staff to support where necessary," Holmes said. "We are ready to go."

[CN: food mentions!]
Headcanon that when Cameron finds herself struggling with coders’ block at the end of the summer, Donna convinces her to go on an impromptu weekend trip
Cameron is back from her ‘sabbatical.’ she’s fully settled in at Donna’s, she’s supposed to be working on a new game, her plan is to finish and release the game (‘get ready to suck on that, Atari!’) and then work full-time on Phoenix dot net. But during the summer, she suddenly finds herself unable to focus or make any useful decisions about the game. She not coincidentally starts learning more about baking and old, pre-war methods of cleaning, disinfecting, and canning.
When Donna comes home from work one evening to find the house half rearranged and Cameron in the kitchen, her old hachimaki with the Japanese sun and ‘kamikaze’ kanji tied around her forehead, surrounded by cooling jars of soon to be out of season strawberries and raspberries and pantry items that are waiting to be sorted and reorganized, she realizes that it’s time to intervene. When Cameron doesn’t even say hi, and instead says, “I promise it’s not as bad as it looks!” Donna says, “Okay! How can I help?” Cameron looks around, and then says, “…um, by ordering some takeout for dinner?”
One hour, several cartons of fried rice, egg rolls, and tofu and broccoli, and a quick panic attack later, Donna leans across the little out door dinner table that they’ve set up by the pool, and says, “Okay. So, I have an idea.” When Cameron squints skeptically at her, Donna says, “…a different idea.” Taking a sip of homemade lemonade, Cameron says, “So not staying in California, making a palm pilot together, and falling in love?” With a rueful grin, Donna says, “I just keep on walking right into that one, huh?” Cameron grins back at her. “I’m just teasing, Boss. You know that I think it was the best idea.” This makes Donna blush happily.
Then she sets down her drink, and says firmly, “What I was going to suggest is, what if we go somewhere this weekend? I have Friday off, no real plans, let’s just get out of here!” “What, like, Sonoma?” Cameron guesses. “No, although it’s very nice there, more like, really go somewhere, that we haven’t been. Like, I say we just pack some small bags on Thursday night, and then we get up early on Friday, and we just go to the airport” — “Absolutely not,” Cameron interjects — “Or,” Donna continues undeterred, “the Greyhound stati— “ (she doesn’t bother to finish saying the words after Cameron looks at her in horrified bewilderment) “or okay, I know, the train station! We can go the train station and just look up at the departures board, and we pick out a place that’s an hour or two away, and just have the best adventure we can.” Cameron purses her lips anxiously, and Donna leans forward again, and says, “Cameron, you did the work. You did the research, and the thinking deeply, and the planning. So now, it’s just time to walk away from it for a day or two, and let the next stroke of genius come to you.” Grinning tentatively, Cameron says, sounding very young, “I do really like trains.”
Which is how they end up in Davis for the weekend. (They consider Reno, but decide to save it for ‘next time’ when they realize it’s 7 hours away.) Their train departs mid-morning, and they chat and eat their cheesy egg sandwiches and drink their coffees and gaze at the passing scenery and all of the stations they stop at. Cameron seems relaxed, and Donna has to resist the temptation to tell her, “See? It’s already working, and we’re not even there yet!”
They arrive at the Davis station in the early afternoon, where Donna scours a rack of pamphlets and brochures, grabbing every one that looks interesting. They take a taxi to a nearby hotel, check into their room, and rest for a little while before heading the state school’s campus to tour the grounds and admire some architecture.
On Saturday Donna convinces Cameron to visit the raptor rehabilitation center at the state university’s school of veterinary medicine and she agrees after realizing that raptors are birds and not velociraptors. (“Like is it really necessary to call a living species by that name?! Just call them birds of prey, it isn’t that hard!”) Cameron unexpectedly gets emotional during the rehab center’s presentation, hearing story after story about how the resident birds are in the center’s care because, essentially, they’re disabled: they have eye and wing injuries (often caused by humans) that prevent them from hunting. But volunteers look after them, providing the best quality of life they can.
(The volunteers also have resident ‘ambassador birds’ who participate in the presentations perched on their outstretched gloved forearms. When one of the volunteers says that they refer to this as ‘sitting on the fist’ Donna laughs out loud, and Cameron hisses at her, “Would you get your mind out of the gutter for once? You are mortifying me!”)
Donna grabs more brochures and picks out some souvenirs from the gift shop as an apology, and Cameron, suddenly inspired, picks out guides on bird watching and raptor care and the history of falconry. Cameron finds herself reluctant to leave, but goes with Donna to the museum that’s next on their list. When they get there, Donna jokes, “I really hope that you’ll discuss it with me before you decide to take in a pet kestrel,” but Cameron says, “Hey, can you hang on a minute?” She sits down on a bench in the museum lobby and pulls a notebook and pen out of her backpack. “I just thought of something, I need to get it down….” Donna grins at her, “Take your time, I’ll be checking out the exhibits. You’re welcome!”
The next morning they tour some of Davis’s many public gardens before going to the train station for the ride back to Mountain View. The trip goes quickly, Donna gazing out the window again, and Cameron scribbling in her notebook and looking through her new books and brochures. She’s surprised to realize that she’s sad that their adventure is over, but is happy to get back to work the next day.
‘A trip to Davis’ becomes Cameron and Donna’s shorthand for ‘I need a productive work break,’ and, naturally, Donna makes as many jokes about ‘sitting on a fist’* as she possibly can; Cameron pretends to be annoyed by it, and looks forward to their next trip, dreams about owls, and looks up local wildlife rehab centers to see if they need volunteers.
*I’m not making this up

Brazil House committee approves 'desperation bill' and biofuel subsidies
Tumblr media
On Thursday afternoon, a House special committee approved a bill declaring a state of emergency until the end of the year and granting the Brazilian government the right to spend an extra BRL 41 billion (USD 7.6 billion) on social policies and stimulus programs.
The 36-1 majority in the committee reflects the overwhelming support the bill obtained in the Senate last week. All but one senator voted in favor of the constitutional amendment proposal — despite the glaring fiscal risks it brings to the budget. Previously reportedly nicknamed the “kamikaze bill” by the Economy Ministry, the proposal is now being called the “desperation bill” by opponents, and the “benefits bill” by its backers.
Over 60 percent of the extra spending will be used to pay for a 50-percent increase in payments of the Auxílio Brasil cash-transfer program, President Jair Bolsonaro’s flagship social policy. The bill also includes a stimulus package for truckers, taxi drivers, and senior citizens.

安居乐业; Getting Settled
I'm finally here!
But freeze frame, and rewind about 24 hours, getting on my first flight, to San Francisco, at 6AM. During the layover, I met about 5 people from the program, who were all super friendly (and who might all be way better than me at Chinese...so probably won't be seeing much of them in class at least). And I realized that my place, with just under a 20 minute walk to campus, was one of the closer options. It's in the Da'an district (hence the name of this post).
Then came the 13, maybe 14 hour flight. Agony. At one point my legs got so stiff I thought something was medically wrong with them.
During the combined flights, I finished four films (as well as quite a few episodes of a sappy J-Drama). Brief reviews are as below:
Funny Girl (1968) - What it says on the tin: Barbra sure is a funny girl! (And what a voice.) I was surprised by the complexity of the second half, and of the ending -- her performance of "My Man" was gorgeous, and am I totally missing the point or stating the obvious to say that I enjoyed how the "man" in the song could be either Mr. Arnstein or the stage?
Hidden Letters (2022) - I started this documentary with my family but we didn't finish. The subject-- 女书, a script created by and for women in Hunan--is fascinating but I wish that the documentary had focused a little more (or at all) on its actual history, or the specifics of the writing system. The ending song was really nice; I'll have to look for it some time.
Kamikaze Girls (2004) - The sleeper hit and the star of the show; it actually rocked. Hyper-stylization done right! The main characters were very femme/butch. A good line: "It's not wrong to feel good; that's what Rococo taught me."
Death Becomes Her (1992) - Following with the campy theme; great makeup, kooky effects. Yes, it's not revolutionizing gender roles; yes, the social commentary is sledgehammer-subtle; and yes, it's pitting women against each other -- but it's so fun! (Said with a mildly facetious tone
The meals were pretty decent: 1) dinner (butter chicken on a bed of rice with a roll and butter, some kind of grain-vinegar salad, and a chocolate pretzel crumb cake from Milk), 2) "light snack" (small turkey sandwich roll), and 3) breakfast (scrambled eggs with potato hash and chicken sausage, a packaged croissant and butter, and fruit). Nothing was gastronomically spectacular, but I wasn't let down, either.
Still, it's hard to conceive of how long being on the plane for 14+ hours is, and how much it sucks; it's been a long time since I was on a flight that long. I was in the same row as someone else in the program, but a middle-aged man was in the seat between us. I slept a bit, but atrociously. At one point I got so bored (even with all the movies available), I pulled up the digital map on the plane screen and just toggled around Taiwan, studying the cities. I even took out some paper and drew Taiwan and the 11 cities it showed. I still remember them, working counter clockwise from the top: Keelung, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Nantou, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Taitung, Hualian, & Yilan. Round and around, up and down, side to side I went, pinching at the map.
When we landed, though, I found that someone had sent a video of the apartment to our LINE groupchat--and it looked amazing! The wait to get the keys and everything was a little long, but I met one of my housemates there, Lillian, and we took the taxi over together; she seems super sweet (should I refer to people by name? or is that too revealing? Maybe I'll edit these posts later.) The whole time we talked about how excited we were for the summer. When we arrived, the apartment was just as good as it had looked (also very close to some cute shops, cafes, and a 7/11), and we met another housemate who had been locked out: Fin.
Fin might be one of the coolest girls I've ever met. We first saw her sitting perched on her moped, wearing a white mesh longsleeve under a lime green gingham tank top with a paneled denim skirt, about knee length. She offered us mangos and pudding, and then to play a song for us on her robin's-egg-blue electric guitar, which we eagerly accepted. She strummed and sang Lana Del Rey's "Happiness is a butterfly;" she has a beautiful voice, smooth and light. Lillian and I sang along a little but mainly enjoyed. Then Fin shared some cool Taiwanese indie music that she liked with us; she offered to take us to a concert some time (which I will happily take her up on). Another housemate, Amber, came in; Amber studies, performs, and choreographs contemporary circus (thus also putting her in the running for one of the coolest girls I've ever met). Amber joined in the concert talk and mentioned a free outdoor show happening next week! I hope we can all go. Fin and I talked about Mitski and she played one of her songs on guitar. It was a lovely, shimmering kind of introduction to the whole place.
There are quite a few more housemates but more on the morrow, because I have to get up bright and early for orientation! I'm settled in my room, which is in the 'basement' (very spacious--so far I like it). Already I can tell my Chinese is in a dire state. Hopefully I'm ready; I guess it's (almost) time to find out. More later!

Bye bye sanur & hello Nusa Lembogan

11 celebrities who've been called out for homophobic comments
This is gonna be interesting...
1. In 2020, Twitter users accused J.K. Rowling of transphobia after comments she made on Twitter. Rowling tweeted, "'People who menstruate.' I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?" Fans on social media quickly told the writer she was not being inclusive to the transgender community. Rowling backed up her statement by tweeting, "I respect every trans person's right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I'd march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it's hateful to say so." She also said, "I want trans women to be safe. At the same time, I do not want to make natal girls and women less safe. When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he's a woman – and, as I've said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth."
2. Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the Academy Awards after his old homophobic comments surfaced, saying, "I am evolving and want to continue to do so."
Between 2009 and 2010, Kevin Hart made insensitive jokes on Twitter and in his standup specials. For example, in one tweet, the comedian said he would break a dollhouse over his son's head if it turned out he was gay. In his 2010 special, "Seriously Funny," he reiterated the point that he would act abusively if his son was gay. "I wouldn't tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times weren't as sensitive as they are now," Hart later told Rolling Stone. "I think we love to make big deals out of things that aren't necessarily big deals, because we can. These things become public spectacles. So why set yourself up for failure?" When it was announced that Hart was going to be the host of the Oscars in 2018, his past jokes resurfaced. After backlash from the public, Hart stepped down as host. "I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's....this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists," he wrote in a tweet. "I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past … I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart."
3. After Paris Hilton was caught criticizing the gay community in an audio recording, she apologized, saying, "Gay people are the strongest and most inspiring people I know." In 2012, an audio recording of Paris Hilton in a taxi cab was leaked. According to reports, she was in the car with a gay man who was showing her the gay dating app, Grindr. In the audio, you can hear Hilton say, "Gay guys are the horniest people in the world. They're disgusting. Dude, most of them probably have AIDS. ... I would be so scared if I were a gay guy. You'll like, die of AIDS." Her publicist confirmed that the recording was in fact Hilton but emphasized the socialite was not homophobic. (Are they sure about this? God...) In an apology statement, Hilton said, "I am so sorry and so upset that I caused pain to my gay friends, fans, and their families. Gay people are the strongest and most inspiring people I know."
4. After a member of the audience called out Tracy Morgan for his homophobic remarks during a standup set, the comedian apologized. In 2011, a man chronicled Tracy Morgan's standup set in Nashville on Facebook. In the post, the man said Morgan said being gay is a choice because "God makes no mistakes." The comedian also allegedly said he would stab his son if he came out as gay. (Kevin Hart, you here?) After backlash and a half-hearted apology on "Late Show with David Letterman," Morgan issued an official apology. "I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville," he said. "I'm not a hateful person and don't condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context." (Good sir. There is more to LGBTQ+ then just gays and lesbians)
5. Sarah Silverman used a gay slur in a 2010 tweet. When asked about it in 2018, she said, "I'm certainly creative enough to think of other words besides that that don't hurt people." In 2010, Sarah Silverman tweeted, "I don't mean this in a hateful way but the new bachelorette's a f-----." Although the tweet went relatively unnoticed at the time, it picked up momentum again in 2018 when people pointed out that it was unfair for Kevin Hart to step down from hosting the Oscars for doing something similar. "Yea, I'm done with that," Silverman told TMZ when she was asked about it in 2018. "I think I can find other ways to be funny. I used to say 'gay' all the time like, 'That's so gay!' Because we're from Boston. We'd go, 'That's what you say in Boston. I have gay friends. I just say gay.' Then I heard myself, and I realized I was like the guy who'd say, 'What? I say colored. I have colored friends.' I realized it's stupid, and I'm certainly creative enough to think of other words besides that that don't hurt people. But I fuck up all the time."
6. Eminem has been criticized for using gay slurs in his songs, but he insists he isn't homophobic. In 2018, Eminem released his album, "Kamikaze." In one song titled "The Fall," he focuses on fellow rapper Tyler, The Creator. In the song, Eminem raps," "Tyler create nothin', I see why you called yourself a f----t, bitch." This wasn't the first time rapper had been criticized for using a gay slut. Throughout his career, he has used similar words in his songs and received a lot of criticism for it. Eminem, however, insists he is not homophobic. "The honest-to-God truth is that none of that matters to me: I have no issue with someone's sexuality, religion, race, none of that," the rapper told Vulture. "Anyone who's followed my music knows I'm against bullies — that's why I hate that f---ing bully Trump — and I hate the idea that a kid who's gay might get s--- for it."
7. Mel Gibson mocked how gay men act in the early '90s. While doing an interview in 2001 for Spanish newspaper El Pais, Gibson said, "With this look, who's going to think I'm gay? I don't lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?" Throughout the '90s, GLAAD protested Gibson's films, but the actor refused to apologize. "I'll apologize when hell freeze over," he said. "They can f--- off."
8. Alec Baldwin went on a homophobic Twitter rant against a reporter he did not agree with. He later said his remarks were "in no way was the result of homophobia." In 2013, Daily Mail reporter George Stark wrote a story accusing Alec Baldwin's wife, Hilaria, of tweeting at James Gandolfini's funeral. Baldwin took to Twitter to express his anger at Stark, calling the reporter a "toxic little queen," among other comments. In an interview with the Gothamist after the incident, Baldwin stood by his decision to call the reporter a "queen." "The idea of me calling this guy a 'queen' and that being something that people thought is homophobic … a queen to me has a different meaning. It's somebody who's just above," he told the publication. "It doesn't have any necessarily sexual connotations," Baldwin said. "To me a queen ... I know women that act queeny, I know men that are straight that act queeny, and I know gay men that act queeny. It doesn't have to be a definite sexual connotation or a homophobic connotation." He later issued an official apology, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "My anger was directed at Mr. Stark for blatantly lying and disseminating libelous information about my wife and her conduct at our friend's funeral service. As someone who fights against homophobia, I apologize," Baldwin said. "I would not advocate violence against someone for being gay, and I hope that my friends at GLAAD and the gay community understand that my attack on Mr. Stark in no way was the result of homophobia."
9. Chris Brown also used homophobic language (no shockers there) when talking about another rapper, but he later said, "I love all my gay fans." In 2010, rapper Raz provoked Chris Brown when he tweeted about Brown's past assault on Rihanna. Brown responded by attacking Raz on Twitter, referencing the fact that Raz was molested by another man as a child and calling him a "#homothug." "I'm not homophobic! He's just disrespectful," Brown tweeted later. "BTW…I love all my gay fans and this immature act is not targeted at you!!!! Love."
10. Azealia Banks has a long history of problematic comments, but she has since said she will no longer use gay slurs. In 2015, singer Azealia Banks was caught on camera yelling at a flight attendant after getting into a fight with a fellow passenger. In the video, you can hear Banks call the flight attendant a gay slur, according to HuffPost. She later tweeted about the incident, writing, "I don't care. I've said it before and I'll say it again."Banks' history with the word doesn't stop there. In 2016, she used the word to attack fellow singer Zayn Malik on Twitter, leading to the deactivation of her account. She has also called the LGBTQ community "the gay white KKK. Get some pink hoods and unicorns and rally down rodeo drive."In 2016, however, she announced she is never using the gay slur again. "The amount of people that get hurt when I use the word vs. the amount of people I've said it to are just not worth it," she wrote on Facebook. "Honestly... This isn't a cop-out, it's just me realizing that words hurt. and while I may be immune to every word and be thicker skinned than most, it doesn't mean that I get to go around treating people with the same toughness that made my skin so thick."
11. Drake Bell received backlash after posting a transphobic tweet. He later called the remarks "thoughtless." When Caitlin Jenner came out as transgender in 2015, Nickelodeon actor and singer Drake Bell tweeted, "Sorry...still calling you Bruce." After receiving backlash, he deleted the tweet and then posted another, misgendering Jenner. "I'm not dissing him! I just don't want to forget his legacy! He is the greatest athlete of all time," Bell tweeted. "Chill out!" After that, he tweeted out an apology. "I sincerely apologize for my thoughtless insensitive remarks," Bell wrote. "I in no way meant to hurt or demean those going through a similar journey. Although my comments were made in innocence, I deeply regret the negative effect they've had on so many."
Here are some tweets that were mentioned earlier (I couldn't find all of them)

Ukraine will arm its Bayraktar TB2 with air-to-air missiles to face Russian kamikaze drones
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/01/2022 - 14:00 in Military, UAV - UAV, War Zones
The Bayraktar TB2 combat drones in service with the Ukrainian armed forces will be equipped with air-to-air missiles to be able to shoot down Russian Kamikaze UAVs.
“Soon our Bayraktar TB2 and Akincis will have air-to-air missiles; not only to engage drones, but other enemy aircraft... we are conducting our tests,” said Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar, according to the German newspaper Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) during the SAHA Expo defense fair in Istanbul.

Missile Sungur.
A contract was signed between Roketsan and drone manufacturer Baykar for the integration of the Sungur air defense missile to combat UAVs.
Murat Ikinci, Roketsan's general manager, said at the fair that Sungur is effective in knocking down mobile targets, such as helicopters and drones.
Tumblr media
The integration of these missiles into the Bayraktar TB2 and Akinci combat drones can lead to the creation of a low-cost air patrol concept to eliminate threats such as attack helicopters and enemy drones, including kamikaze drones, instead of using high-cost air-to-air missiles.
Russia has used Iranian kamikaz drones “Shahed-136” to destroy Ukrainian targets. The kamikazes are slow, noisy and implanted at low altitudes, making them "easible target".

The Turkish manufacturer Baykar is also establishing a drone manufacturing facility in Ukraine. This unit will be responsible for the manufacture of the jet drone "Kizilelma" (Red Apple) that will be launched soon, Bayraktar told the dpa news agency.

#textschnipsel #selbstgeschrieben #schreibenmachtglücklich #schreibenschreibenschreiben #autorenleben #wortkunst #wortliebe #autor #deutscheliteratur #zitat #buchvorstellung #leselust #buchtipp #literatur #kreativesschreiben #schriftsteller #meinroman #roman #lesenistschön #lesenistliebe #lesenisttoll #gedanken #zita https://www.instagram.com/p/CESAi8pgdTP/?igshid=18chvy0zh0726

Midtown
It’s late.  Or maybe early was a better description.  Two in the morning and your shift at the hipster bar in Midtown has finally ended.  You’ve been flirting with a guy over the night.  Even though he’d suggested fucking you in the restroom because he didn’t want to wait for your shift to end, you’ve still decided to go home with him.  You hadn’t got laid in months now.  Months and months.  Not since Steve and that was back in DC.  It was time to end the dry spell.
You follow the guy outside.  What was his name again?  Gary? Jareth … no, he’s not the Goblin King, shit.  Uh … Gerald.  Gerald went to flag down a cab while you stand, waiting on the sidewalk.
“Y/N?”  A deep familiar voice says.
You looked around to see who could possibly know you in New York that would be up at two in the morning and you see him.  Steve Rogers is standing in the middle of the sidewalk hands in the pockets of his tan, leather jacket and staring at you.
“Steve?”  You say, startled.  “What are you doing here?”
“I live here.”  He says.  “Uh, there.”  He points at the eyesore that’s the Avengers Tower.
You laugh.  “Shit, of course, you do.  Why are you out so late?”
“What are you doing?  Are you coming?”  Gerald calls.  He’s standing at a taxi, holding the door open.
“Sorry, Gerry, you’re out of luck tonight.  I’ve wasted your time.”  You shoot back.
He storms over to you.  “What did you fucking say, bitch?”  He yells raising his hand.  You close your eyes and hold your arms up over your head.  A broken wrist is better than a concussion.  You know that from experience.
You hear the sound of a fist hitting flesh, but you don’t feel anything.  You wonder for a second if you’ve disconnected or something.  When you open your eyes Gerald is clambering to his feet and Steve is standing in front of you.
“Back off, you fucker.  She’s coming home with me.”  Gerald snarls.
Steve just calmly stands there blocking you from Gerald.  “Son, just don’t.”  He says.
Gerald looks for a moment like he might actually pick a fight with Captain America.  He quickly comes to his senses though and scrambles into the back of the cab leaving you alone with Steve.
“Thank you.  I am way worse at picking decent guys than I thought.”  You say.  “Sorry, you had to …”
Steve waves his hands like it’s no big deal.  “Are you okay?  Did he hurt you?”  He asks.
“Yeah, I’m fine.  I just feel like an idiot.”  You shake your head and laugh feebly.  “This is why I don’t date.”
Steve looks at you sadly.  “Still?”
You shrug.  “Sorry.”
Steve offers you his elbow.  “Wanna walk with me?”
You hook your arms through his and the two of you start walking through the city.
“Why are you walking around at two in the morning, Steve?”  You ask.
Steve shakes his head like he’s trying to clear it.  “I haven’t been sleeping.  Honestly, since they pulled me out of the ice, the only decent night’s sleep I’ve had was that one I spent with you.  Since what happened in Washington I’ve barely been sleeping at all.  Did you hear about Washington?”
“Those helicarriers and SHIELD falling apart?  Sure.  Who hasn’t?”  You answer.  “There were rumors that you’d died for a little while, and then it was all your fault.  Then you moved here.  Was it that bad?”
Steve shrugs and doesn’t say anything.  You decide not to press it.  “Are you liking New York?”  He asks.
“Yes and no.  I like the city.  I hate my job and it doesn’t pay enough for me to actually save any money to move on. It’s mostly tourists and tourists tip like shit.” You answer.  “I should try and find something closer to where I live.  I guess the bright lights drew me in.”
“Where are you living?”  He asks.
“Way out in Queens.  Getting home is fun in the middle of the night, I can tell you.”  You laugh.
He laughs with you and bumps you with his hip.  “You have a bigger death wish than I do.”
“Excuse me?  I never flew a plane into the ocean.”  You tease.
“I’d take kamikaze flight into the arctic circle over the F train at 2 in the morning.”  Steve shoots back.
You stop walking and he takes a few steps forward and turns to look at you confused.
“Steve?”  You say and then shake your head. “No, never mind.  None of my business.”
“What is it?”  He presses.
“Were you trying to kill yourself when you did that?”  You ask.
“Wow.  You don’t like small talk much.”  Steve says.
“Yeah.  Don’t answer it. I’m an ass.”  You say.  You hook your arm back into his and you both begin walking again.  This time in silence
You pass a little hole in the wall style pizza place and Steve stops you. “You wanna get a slice?”  He asks.
You agree and the two of you head inside.  You sit at one of the plastic tables and wait for them to heat up the two slices of pizza.  You share a coke.  There was a meal deal and the cups were huge.
“How’s your friend?  The one that was still alive?”  You ask, searching for a topic of conversation.
“About the same.  They moved her to England to be closer to her family though, so I don’t get to see her as much.”
You take his hand and squeeze it.  “I’m sorry, Steve. I know she meant a lot to you.”
Steve strokes his thumb down your palm.  “I went back to the bar you worked at in Washington.”  He says
“Really?  Why?” You ask.  He raises his eyebrow at you and you start laughing.  “Yeah, I moved on not long after we hooked up.  It was time.”
One of the guys working the counter brought the slices over and dropped them on the table on white paper plates.  You and Steve thank him and pick up your slices.  You’d ordered the Margherita and he ordered a pepperoni.
You take a bite and moan.  “Why is pizza so good here?  It makes no fucking sense.”
“They say it’s the water,”  Steve says.
“Yeah, well that sounds fake.”  You reply.  Steve laughs.
“How do you know it’s time to move?”  He asks.
You shrug.  “Depends.  Might be that I feel like I’ve seen what I want to see.  Might just be feeling like I don’t belong there anymore.  I didn’t feel like I belonged in DC anymore.”
“Do you remember me telling you about my friend when I was a kid?  Bucky? He died?”  Steve said. He stares at his hands avoiding eye contact with you.
“Yeah, you ditched school together.”  You say taking a sip of the coke.
“He’s still alive.”
You almost choke on the drink.  That seems implausible at best.  But then you are sitting across from a man born in 1918 who was frozen for seventy years.  If it could happen once?  “That’s good though isn’t it?”
He shakes his head.  “He’s not him. They did something to him.”
“Who’s they?”  You ask.
“Doesn’t matter.  He tried to kill me, and then he saved me.  Why do you think he’d do that?”  Steve says.
You don’t know what to say, but then you’re not sure he wants an answer.  You’re just a sounding board to his hurt.  Someone who isn’t part of that world who he can talk to at this very moment in time.  “Maybe he is still him.  What are you going to do?”
“I’m trying to find him.”  He shakes his head like he’s trying to clear it again.  “You done?”
You nod your head and wipe your hand on a napkin.  You toss your trash in the can by the door and turn to Steve when you’re both on the sidewalk.  He offers you his elbow again and you link arms with him and begin walking.
You walk a circuit that spirals in towards the Avengers’ tower.
“I couldn’t get you out of my head,”  Steve says after a little while.
You’d been daydreaming.  Daydreaming?  Is that the right word for it when it’s 3 AM?  You double take, not sure if you heard him right.  “Sorry, what?”
“That’s why I went back to the bar.  Not because I was hoping we could … well, you know?  Though I did hope that too.  I just wanted to see you again.”   He says.
“Why?  I’m not anything special.”
Steve stops and turns you to face him.  He opens his mouth to say something and closes it again.  Instead, he leans in and kisses you.  He still tastes like pepperoni.  For a second you forget all about the fact you’ve sworn off relationships and you give yourself to it.  Your lips part and his tongue dips into your mouth.  You feel your breath catch and you pull away.
“Shit.”  You say, and start walking.
Steve follows you.  “Y/N.  What are you doing?”
You don’t look back.  You don’t break your stride.  “I made a mistake.  I’m sorry.”
“Don’t tell me you never thought about that day,”  Steve said, easily keeping stride with you.
“Of course, I think about it.  Of course, I do.  Why do you think I moved?”  You cry.
“You said you saw me.”  He says stopping.
You hesitate and turn back to face him.  “I do.  I do see you, Steve.  You aren’t the kind of person who ends up with me.  The people who end up with me are cruel and they treat me like shit and they hurt me.”
He takes a step forward.  Not saying anything.  Like he’s trying to sneak up on a wild animal.  “I did.”
You try and make sense of the words.  They are completely out of context and you can’t make them match anything you just said.  “What?”
“I did try and kill myself when I crashed that plane.”  He says, his eyes are just full of pain.  “I told Peggy I had no choice.  Of course, I had a choice, but I wanted an out.  I’d done what I’d wanted to do and I was finished.  I couldn’t be Captain America anymore.  I knew there was no way I could stop though, so I crashed the plane.  Only I didn’t die.  I just lost everything.  Everyone who knew me. Everything I knew.  Everything.  Now I’m only Captain America.  I didn’t want to do this anymore.  Now it’s the only thing I have.”
“So I’m your answer?  Steve, I don’t even know who I am.”
He takes another step towards you.  “I just thought… I thought maybe we could see.  That’s all.  I could take you on a date.”
“You don’t even know me.”
He takes one more step.  He stands close to you, and you look up to him.  “I’d like to get to.”
“Can I think about it?”  You ask.
“Of course.”  He offers you his arm, and you link yours with it.
Your spiral has started to form tighter and tighter circles and the tower has begun to loom over you.  You have started to just talk about little things.  Where you each grew up.  What your favorite food is.  Where you first kissed another person.  It’s like neither of you wants to say the deep thing that might make you try and flee again.
The sun starts to creep up.  The way it aligns itself with the grid made by the Manhattan streets makes the buildings look like they’re on fire.
“If you don’t want to be with me anymore, you’ll just tell me?  Don’t cheat on me.”  You say.
“I couldn’t imagine ever cheating on anyone.   I don’t think I have it in me.”  Steve answers.  Of course, he could just be saying what you want to hear, but somehow you know that he’s not.
“Steve… Admitting this to myself is hard, so please don’t make fun of me.”  You say.
“Of course not.”
You swallow hard, fighting with yourself to say the words.  “I’m fragile, okay.  The things that have happened to me.  I like to pretend they made me hard.  They didn’t they’ve made me easy to break and so I avoid letting people get close.  Please don’t hurt me.”
“I’ll do my best.  I think the same might be true for me.”  He says.
Your hand slides down his forearm.  He’s nearly unbreakable in every way but the way that matters, you could tell that when you first met him.  “I know.”
His fingers link with yours.
“Would you like to go out with me sometime?  Get dinner?  See a movie?”  Steve asks.
“I’d like that.”  You reply.
You reach the entrance to Avengers Tower and walk him to the large automatic doors.  He leans down and kisses you.  It’s soft and tender and far too brief.  “You look tired.” He says.  “Come inside.”
You nod.  He looks up at a security camera above the door and they slide open you follow him inside.  The doors close behind you.
