3 out of 5 stars
Set in the early to mid 2000s, Liv is moving to a new town with her mother. At her old school, she was bullied for being a bisexual goth and Liv is super nervous about what kids will say at this one. She tries to stick to herself, but other people start talking to her, much to her chagrin. Liv is convinced that, at any moment, they will turn on her. She does well in English class and her teacher tells her that she is doing amazing and could very well become a writer one day. Liv loves the affirmation.
She even starts to love the friendships that she has somehow stumbled into, though there is drama here and there with an exceptionally flirty boy who has a girlfriend. What is she going to do about this?
One snow day, her teacher sends her a message on her after giving her the book Lolita to read as her book report. Any adult reader will know that this is an instant red flag, but will Liv realize what's going on?
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It did have a few too many plotlines / conflicts that I felt like could've been whittled down to make it more streamlined. It was a solid 3 star read.

While I'm finishing my comic book with Marc Dubuisson, with these 90 pages, I think I almost did 300 pages of comics since 2016?? (and more with the non published work)
And still, I don't believe I'm a comic book artist... Thank you my burn out and my non existent self confidence, I guess.

March 2024 Book Club
No I didn't forget to do this in March you're crazy
The Intrigue by Marion Chesney: Mannerling has fallen into new hands once again, and second Beverly sister Jessica is more determined than ever to regain her family's home. Luckily for her, the new owner has a marriageable son. Even as Harry proves himself to be a lecher, a drunk, and a brute, Jessica is determined to become mistress of Mannerling once more. With help from her family and a newfound admirer, Prof. Robert Somerville, they may be able to save Jessica from herself and a truly wretched match.
Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk: Growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and while her bullying seems isolated at first, things quickly escalate, and reclusive World War I veteran Toby becomes a target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby’s strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. She will soon need to find the courage to stand as a lone voice of justice as tensions mount.
Black Friend by Ziwe: Ziwe made a name for herself staring interviewees in the eye and asking: “How many Black friends do you have?” She’s an expert at making people squirm, coming right out and asking the tough questions about race and racism that our culture has made white people experts at dancing around. Now, she turns her attention to culture at large, focusing sharply on issues like race, education, privilege, and money.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley: Welcome to the World State, 632 AF (After Ford). Nowadays, we strive to make sure everyone is happy. There are no complicated things like love or families to cause problems. The incubation factories take care of all that child-rearing business. All you have to do is work, consume, and above all, never forget to take your Soma. And please disregard the Savage Man that has suddenly come into our midst. Hopefully, he won't be here long.
Mall Goth by Kate Leth: It's not easy being a bi goth in the early 2000s, but Liv is trying to make it work. She finds refuge in her love of dark clothes and moody music when the world is full of things she'd rather not think about - like her parents' crumbling marriage, or her boyfriend who already has a girlfriend, or her English teacher that's paying a bit too much attention to her. With the help of her suburban refuge, Liv sets off on a journey of self-acceptance and learns to navigate the ups and downs of high school and to recognize true friendship.

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Mall Goth by Kate Leth
It’s always hard to fit in when you’re the new kid in town. It’s even harder when you look different (goth) and act different (bisexual). Liv is doing her best to fit in at her new high school, but also stay true to herself at the same time. Most of the kids in school either dont like her or don’t understand her. Her English teacher is one of the only people who sees a special spark in her. Most of the town is boring, but the mall where her mother works has possibilities.
I can definitely say that this book isn’t what I was expecting, although I’m not sure exactly WHAT I was expecting from a strange title like “Mall Goth.” I’ll also say that the story starts off as one thing and then it branches off into something darker. If I give you a trigger warning then I’ll spoil what happens, so let me say this instead: Liv is stronger than she looks, and she comes through the darkness at the end.
Give this graphic novel to teens who enjoy realistic fiction about school, friendship, family problems, and overcoming odds.

Dear Mags Visaggio
Whatever the faults Peter David had in life they catagorcially were fewer than your own.
How do I know this? Because it says volumes about a person's fundamental character for them to badmouth someone mere days after they have died. You are cut from the same wretched cloth (or should I say, the same tattered filth laden rag) as those subhuman creatures who slandered Stan lee mere hours after his own passage in 2018.
I would bet very good money that PAD's 'cartoonishly venomous and mocking reply' to your work was very well deserved. This is because
a) When you were in college, DC, Marvel and the publishing industry in general undeniably had more standards than they had at the time you weaseled your way into it, let alone now.
b) You yourself and people cut from your dirt infested rag have routinely and derangedly LIED. It is a core component of your personality traits. So, in principle, I will NEVER believe you on your word because your word isn't worth anything.
c) Creatures from your cloth systemically not only lie but exaggerate and take offence to things which are imperically NOT offensive nor intended to be. But the intention is irelevent in your eyes of course.
d) Given that the lack of quality work in your career can be described best as 'sinking to below even subterreanean depths' if Peter David said those things to you it was well deserved. If he was gatekeeping you frankly he should have tried harder. You summarily never deserved to be in the industry because you are not even 1/8th as talented as Peter David was on his worst days.
Your vibes mean nothing. Your work and actions do. By both of those you have proven yourself not just unworthy of the industry you weaseled your way into but also someone who makes the world an undeniably worse place for your presence in it. You could change this. You could apologise and be a better person. But like so many people from your ideological outlook *scowls at Kate Lethe* you never will.
You have the audiacity to talk about Peter David's lack of kindness when the act of doing so at this point in time is demonstrable of your own lack of kindness to his fans, his colleagues, his friends and above all his family who are mourning him right now.
It would be supreme cosmic justice if, on the day you die, those who ever despised you (who would doubtless number higher than those who ever even mildly disliked PAD, indeed that is likely the case as I type this) slandered you for your moral failings.
But don't worry, I doubt that will happen. Because when you pass away, outside of your immediate social circle, precious few will know or remember who you were. if you are extremely lucky, you will be remembered as a pesonification of the type of 'creator' typical of this era of comic books, an exemplary of how and why the old institutions crumbled into irrelevancy. But much more likely, no one will even bother saying anything nice or nasty about you.
Amongst the library of Peter David's great works I think this scene from 'Spider-Man meets Spider-man 2099' is an apt metaphor for the point I'm trying to make:
tl:dr:
Go FUCK yourself Mags!

Outside of Billy what other achillean Marvel characters would you consider fem?
Well, Billy's gay, so, there's that. And I think I've made it pretty clear that, based strictly on the text, I don't think the character comes across as particularly "feminine," nor do I think that's an apt descriptor for the cultural semiotics he typifies. But he does have a certain voice, and a certain expression, which is something that writers and artists have more freedom to lean into these days. I think that exploring Billy's relationship with femininity and allowing the character to express gender-nonconformity would feel natural and organic, and within his cultural context, it would add depth to his relationship with magic and witchcraft. So, it's definitely something I'd celebrate, and it's how I choose to view and interpret the character.
But this is a character that I have a personal relationship with, and who I spend a lot of time reading and writing about. I don't have, like, a rolodex of headcanons for this sort of thing. But if we're talking about the particular voice and sensibility I think Billy has, some of the other characters who come to mind are Ian Soo, Cooper Coen, current iterations of Christian Frost, Carl Valentino, Loki when they're not just presenting as a woman... I'm mostly just naming twinks, but you get the vibe. My diva, Jumbo Carnation, of course. And there are a lot of other characters who have a legibly gay affect but who are, you know, less likely than Billy to pop out in eyeliner and a set of acrylics-- like Teddy, for example. Bobby's also settled into a personality that feels authentic. At the other end of the spectrum, there are characters like Jean-Paul and Shiro are both sexy and masculine, but in a way that's extremely, pardon my French, faggy, and that tends to get pinged as "fem," which has never made sense to me.
#Ian's relationship w/ race gender and sexuality is kind of complicated in the sense that he's a product of 2010s Kate Leth#But I really like him and I think he should pop back up with new pronouns or smth
