HIGHLIGHTS FOR ABC NEWS’ ‘GMA3: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW,’ MAY 8-12

The following report highlights the programming of ABC’s “GMA3: What You Need to Know” during the week of May 8-12. “GMA3: What You Need to Know” is a one-hour news program that airs weekdays at 1:00 p.m. EDT | 12:00 p.m. CDT on ABC, and 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. EDT on ABC News Live.

2024 Northeast Comic Con Spring Edition Wrap-Up

For several years now I’ve been lucky enough to cover the Northeast Comic Con (read my coverage here), a fun cool convention for lovers of comics, pop culture, and collectibles. Most recently I attended the Fall edition in November. This year there were a ton of fun panels, many of which were moderated by my friend comedian/podcaster Ken Reid (I was a guest on his podcast TV Guidance Counselor in 2015).

Here are some of the highlights of some of the guests I got to speak with at this season’s NECC:

The big news for TV fans was the Growing Pains reunion at NECC! Actress/model/comedienne Julie McCullough played Mike Seaver's fiance Julie from 1989-90. I spoke with Julie at the 2015 NECC and she was cool!

Actress Tracey Gold played Carol Seaver on Growing Pains. When looking back at Growing Pains now, it's incredible how many actors got their start on the show like Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt (hey, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is actually a Growing Pains reunion!?!). I asked Gold about Matthew Perry, who passed away last year, and he had a very memorable role as Carol's boyfriend Sandy on several episodes in 1989. Gold said "Matthew and I were friends before he even did the show. I liked Matthew, we had a great working friendship. We were friends outside of the show, and I hung out with Matthew. So when he played Sandy it was great. I knew him and got along with him. He was - I have trouble saying that - a great actor".

Actor Jeremy Miller not only played Ben Seaver on Growing Pains, but he was also notable during the time of Growing Pains as the voice of Linus on several Peanuts TV specials in the 80s. I asked what it was like for him at that young age to be playing Linus and joining the pantheon of Charlie Brown. "It was incredible. I was already a huge fan and I booked the role at 8 years-old, so of course I'm already a gigantic Peanuts fan. Weird enough it's the only time I ever got hired on the spot. I went in for my audition and I read the lines and Lee Mendelson [head of Peanuts Television and Film], kicks in the door and comes running in. I'm like 'Oh God, what did I do wrong?' and he goes 'You sound the most like the original Linus I've ever heard, you're hired!'. Linus was my favorite character, so I melted down and was like 'Really? I'm Linus!?!' It was the coolest thing, such a huge honor" Miller said.

The guest I was most excited about (no offense to anyone else) was Gina Schock, the drummer for The Go-Go's. I have always loved The Go-Go's! I saw them in 2000 when they toured with The B-52's and The Psychedelic Furs. "Playing with the B's was one of my all-time memories and that tour was sold out every show, it was fantastic!" she said. In 2020 after they got the documentary treatment (read my review here), the band was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. Gina was just as cool as you'd imagine and she even signed by vinyl copy of Beauty and the Beat. The band had reportedly ended after their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, but I asked if there could be another tour? "We haven't really ended, we just played about a month ago when we got inducted into the California Hall of Fame. We played three or four songs, we had a great time. So we're actually talking about doing something in the near future." While I was an intern at Ted Demme's production company Spanky Pictures in 1998, Ted and his wife Amanda were talking with The Go-Go's about doing a scripted film about The Go-Go's. The talks ended after Ted passed away in 2002, but I asked with all of the popular music bios in recent years if the project could come back? "I'm not sure. We're always open to hearing stuff, whether or not we're going to do it is another story, but we're always open."

During the panel with Gina Schock she was joined by surprise guest and friend Greg Hawkes, keyboardist for The Cars. I interviewed Mr. Hawkes for my documentary film Life on the V: The Story of V66 and briefly caught up with him at the convention. How cool was it to see a Go-Go and a Car onstage, both members of legendary bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, both music video pioneers and both groups I hold in very high regard, onstage talking music together!?!

Actress Bai Ling has been in a ton of films and TV shows over several decades now. After starting in the Chinese film industry, she came to the U.S. in the early 90s and began acting in TV. My favorite performance of Bai Ling's was in The Crow (as Myca), which turns 30 this year. Since that film there's been a ton of sequels, TV shows and reboots (including one coming out this June). I asked what it was like for her to be a part of this much-loved film that's still being celebrated today, with fans at the convention dressed like Eric Draven? Bai said "I feel very touched and I also feel because that was my first English movie and it was very special to me. I worked closely with Brandon Lee. In my heart I want to protect this movie because nobody can top it. I think they should leave it alone because on it's own it's just pure art. If they remake it, personally I don't like the idea, because people can always watch the original. I cannot control it, but for my fans and the members of the original cast, we wish nobody would make it again."

Actor Kevin Chapman has become quite a "That Guy" actor over the years, appearing in loads of films and TV shows, notably Boston-centric films. He is most known for the hit show Person of Interest (2011-2016), but I first worked with him in 1997. Allow me to explain: the first movie I ever worked on was Ted Demme's excellent crime movie Monument Ave, which I was a location intern on. Chapman was working at the MA Film Office at the time and was discovered by Ted, who cast him as Mickey Pat on that film. Since then, he's acted in loads of movies like Mystic River and Coda. He also appeared in Ted's film Blow, which sadly was Ted's last movie before his 2002 death. I asked Chapman if he stayed in touch with anyone from Spanky, he said "When I was in New York doing Person of Interest, I got together with producer (and Ted's partner at Spanky Pictures) Joel Stillerman for lunch. He was the executive at AMC at the time and did well for himself." Chapman has also done some producing and I asked if he has anything coming up but can't say until the time is right. Even though Chapman and I didn't work closely on Monument Ave, it was nice to see him after all these years and he was super cool!

We talk about how Elizabeth discovered the album on a road trip, the elusive concision of Young’s lyrics, how this record defines a certain version of his sound, how the album documents the end of Neil Young’s creative grieving over guitarist Danny Whitten, how Elizabeth wants to steer her future recordings in a Neil-ward direction and what it was like to be a witness to the taping of the ‘Heart of Gold’ concert film.

This book begins in Scotland and is the first in a series of books that will no doubt showcase each of Cassie’s friends and how they find the person who will become t heir partner in life. But, this is Cassie and Logan’s story.

Cassie is in a Castle and happens upon a hunky kilted Scot inside a library wall. Is he a time traveler or??? Well...when Cassie realizes that the tall gorgeous redhead with the brogue is Logan Reid, prankster extraordinaire, she put the kibosh on his hopes of putting the impromptu kiss they shared onto his website. Not wanting to give up on getting her to sign the release form he puts the moves on to see if he can change her mind. Little does he know that HER goal is to have a torrid European fling while on her dream vacation. And thus begins their journey toward a HES...maybe. Beginning in Scotland they move on to England, seems to end, picks up again in Chicago and continues on from there. How they manage to find their HEA involves some maneuvering, includes Cassie’s friends and sets the reader up for book two that will be the story of one of Logan’s friends getting together with one of Cassie’s friends – these two meet on the European vacation, too.

This book had a New Adult feel to it so my guess is it will be a favorite with those who read this genre.

Would you look at that? The man is wearing a kilt.

Note to self: Cassie Crow—be careful what you wish for.

The man groaned again and raised a hand to shield his eyes from the sunlight now cutting across the hidden al- cove.

“Are you all right?”

“I will be fine once ye douse that blasted light.” He squinted up at her. “Be ye a new chambermaid?”

Chambermaid? She eyed the wide sleeves and open neck of the old-fashioned piratey shirt he wore. “Not sure what kind of weird-ass stuff you’re into buddy, but I don’t do RPG.”

“Weird . . . ass?” His dark red brows drew together as he shaped his mouth around the letters. “Are pee gee?”

“Role playing games. You know, like cosplay or what- ever.” She pointed at him. “Look, you’re the one wearing that get-up and talking like a reject from Macbeth.”

He narrowed his eyes at her finger. “Be ye a witch?” “What did you call me?”

With another groan, he lurched forward. Oh God, what if he was hurt? For all she knew he was a member of some

historic castle tour who got lost in a back passageway and hit his head. She leaned down to inspect him for bruises.

He threw a hand out, palm up, warding her off. “Back away, sorceress,” he hissed.

“Seriously?” She slapped his hand out of the way. “Here, let me help you out of there.” Cassie tugged gently on his shoulder. The voluminous shirt was loose, but she could feel—and appreciate—the thick spread of muscle beneath the soft fabric.

Just my luck, I finally run into a hot Highlander, and he’s delusional.

The man waved off her assistance and struggled to his feet, shaking a wild tousle of thick, red hair out of his eyes. Cassie never fancied herself to be a ginger girl, but it worked on him . . . or maybe that was the kilt talking. She eyed the swath of plaid fabric wrapped around his hips and wondered, like any female in her position would, what might or might not be under there. Reluctantly, she raised her gaze and caught him scrutinizing her in return.

“What be these strange breeks ye wear?” he asked, moving in a circle around her.

Cassie swore she could feel the weight of each of his eyeballs resting on her denim-clad backside. Fair enough. After a prolonged moment, she glanced over her shoulder. “Get a good look?”

“Aye.” He swallowed. “’Tis most unseemly, lass.” He shook his head, gaze still glued to her ass.

“They’re called jeans.” She pivoted to face him. “Are you for real?”

He met her gaze, his answer falling from his lips in a deep, rich brogue with trilling r’s that curled her toes, “Aye, lass, I’m real.”

Cassie’s heart hiccupped. Of course he’s real. Unless

those shots were stronger than I thought. “Were you at the whisky tasting?”

“Whisky?” His green-gold eyes lit with interest. “Do ye have whisky for me, then? I could use a wee dram. Be a good lass and fetch it for me.”

“Ha! I think you’ve had enough, mister. Is that how you ended up stuck in there?” Even as she said this, Cassie doubted it. She didn’t smell a hint of alcohol on him, though she did pick up other pleasant smells. Mint and clove and man and . . . Stop being ridiculous.

His broad shoulders lifted and dropped. “I dinna ken.” “How long were you in there?”

Another shrug.

Cassie dragged her attention away from the wide curve of his shoulders and leaned past him, inspecting the dark, narrow space behind the bookshelf.

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her back, panic edg- ing his voice. “Nay, lass. Doona be going in there.”

“Why not?” She inched forward and tried to get a bet- ter look.

“It canna be safe.” He tugged on her wrist again, his fingers warm and firm.

Tiny butterflies danced along the path where his skin touched hers. She brushed away the tingling sensation and slipped out of his grip, careful not to snag her bracelet. “Well, you were in there, and you appear to have man- aged.”

“Are ye daft, wench? I was trapped!”

She sniffed, not sure she liked being referred to as a wench, and frowned up at him. “What’s the last thing you remember?”

He closed his eyes and slumped against the shelf. “I canna recall anything afore the moment I woke to find my-

self crammed within yonder wall.” He blinked and fo- cused intently on her. “The moment I found you, lass.”

Cassie decided she liked being called lass much better than wench, especially when he was looking at her like that. Gazes locked, her other senses sharpened, heighten- ing her awareness of his body and its proximity to hers. She cleared her throat. “Hm. I think it’d be more accurate to say I’m the one who found you.” Telling herself she was only searching for injuries, she reached up and tentatively skimmed her palms along his temples, her fingers trailing his scalp.

“Looking for devil’s horns?” The man cocked one wicked brow at her as he raised his arms to mirror her movements, running his hands over her head and shoul- ders before brushing his palms down her back. “Ye’ve naught got any fairy wings, so I’d say we’re even. In fact,” he whispered against her hair, standing so close the low burr of his voice became a purr in her own chest, “ye feel perfect to me.”

Like the migrating monarchs her dad studied, the but- terflies made a return trip, enveloping her in a fluttery haze. She shivered. Whether it was the Scot or the scotch or both, Cassie didn’t care. He was here and she was here, and damn it all, it was about time she skipped to the good stuff. With a forceful mental click, Cassie turned off her brain, tilted her chin up, and caught his mouth with hers.

He made a low sound in the back of his throat, of pro- test or surprise, she wasn’t sure. But then his hands settled at her waist, and he returned the kiss. His mouth was somehow soft and hard at the same time, and when he slipped his tongue between her lips, she felt more light- headed than if she’d downed every shot of whisky that had been on that tasting list.

Cassie rolled her tongue against his, savoring the deli- cious contact. He met her thrust for thrust, deepening the kiss until she was swept away on a tidal wave of desire. This. This is what I’ve been waiting for. She clung to him, hands gripping his shoulders, swimming in sensa- tion, drowning in it.

Susanna Reid praised for 'keeping it real' with no make-up selfie ahead of Good Morning Britain return

Susanna Reid delighted fans with a make-up free selfie ahead of her return to Good Morning Britain.

The presenter was branded “fabulous” and “naturally beautiful” by adoring fans who rushed to comment on her latest post.

In the snap, the former Strictly star’s brunette locks were wild and untamed as she embraced her natural look.

Reid wrote: “BACK! And in need of my glam squad! See you on @GMB tomorrow 6am (This is what happens when my hair dries naturally...).”

One fan wrote: “Still looking utterly fabulous! Looking forward to your return, you have been missed.”

Another said: “Best instal pic yet!!! It’s lovely to see our ‘we want to be like you’ celebs’ being normal - makes you all the more fab....”

“Sling your hook glam squad we don’t need you, you have natural beauty, Susanna,” another comment read.

Reid returned to the Good Morning Britain desk on Tuesday morning after several weeks off over the Easter holidays.

The presenter found herself co-anchoring the show with Richard Madeley instead of her usual partner Piers Morgan, who is still in America.

It didn’t take long before Reid was squirming live on air as Madeley embraced his inner Alan Partridge and started to wonder what it would be like to use haemorrhoid cream on his face.

Addressing his fake-tan faux pas last week, Madeley explained that he had been contacted by somebody else who also mistakenly used a lotion on his face instead of aftershave balm. The viewer, however, had an even worse experience than Madeley's tanning mishap after reaching for haemorrhoid treatment.

Puzzled, Madeley pondered what impact the cream would have on the face but was soon cut off by Reid saying: “I thought we were talking about fake tan, not haemorrhoid cream!”

Undeterred, he continued: “What happens if you put haemorrhoid cream on your face? I suppose it tightens up?"

Follow Me, Boys! (1966)

Follow Me, Boys! is a 1966 family film produced by Walt Disney Productions. It is an adaptation of the 1954 novel God and My Country by MacKinlay Kantor and is notable for being the final live action film produced by Walt Disney, which was released two weeks before his death.

The film stars Fred MacMurray, Vera Miles, Lillian Gish, Charles Ruggles and Kurt Russell, and is co-produced by Walt Disney and Winston Hibler, directed by Norman Tokar and written by Louis Pelletier.

The film is notable for being one of the few movies that features the Boy Scouts of America and is Disney’s paean to the Boy Scouts. The title song “Follow Me, Boys!” was written by studio favorites Robert and Richard Sherman. For a time, after the film was released, the Boy Scouts of America was considering using the song as their anthem, but efforts toward this end were eventually dropped. Boys’ Life for December 1966 included a teaser article on the film.

Lem Siddons is part of a traveling band who has a dream of becoming a lawyer. Deciding to settle down, he finds a job as a stockboy in the general store of a small town. Trying to fit in, he volunteers to become scoutmaster of the newly formed Troop 1. Becoming more and more involved with the scout troop, he finds his plans to become a lawyer being put on the back burner, until he realizes that his life has been fulfilled helping the youth of the small town. This was Ruggles’ last feature film. He has a small but critical role in the film. He was age 80 when this picture was made, and did only television work afterwards, until his death in 1970.

  Synopsis

This is a movie which needs to come around again. The USA is hurting for stories such as this. In a nutshell, an outsider named Lemuel Siddons wants so badly to become part of the community he volunteers to become the scoutmaster of a new Boy Scout troop…and over 40 years watches his scouts, their kids and grandkids all follow the path he blazed. He and the community come to realize he is part of them, and that he has become far more important in the grand scheme of life by guiding others to be good citizens/neighbors than he ever might have done by being a famous attorney.

ON my honor, I will do my best to keep a trust-worthy head, a loyal hand on my typewriter and a helpful, friendly spirit in my heart while writing this review of Walt Disney’s latest pep picture, “Follow Me, Boys!” But I must warn, it’s going to take some doing, and my best may not be quite enough. So be prepared.For Mr. Disney’s contribution to the incoming Christmas show, which includes the traditional Nativity Pageant, at the Radio City Music Hall is such a clutter of sentimental blubberings about the brotherhood of the Boy Scouts and indiscriminate ladling of cornball folksy comedy that it taxes the loyalty and patience of even a one-time ardent member of the Beaver Patrol.

One wonders what sort of horror it may course current 12-year-olds.The strain of it isn’t just in seeing Fred MacMurray playing the role of a tirelessly gung-ho scoutmaster in a small town as though he himself were a self-elected victim of arrested development. That’s a conventional discomfort for which the viewer should be prepared by the introduction of Mr. MacMurray as a member of a band of allegedly over-aged collegiate musicians touring the provinces in a bus, with Ken Murray, looking all of 60, as the leading collegian.What is most painful and embarrassing is the picture this film gives of the American small town as a haven for television-type comedians having themselves a fine time with a routine of rancid clichés.Who is the country-store keeper who gives Mr. MacMurray a job but Charles Ruggles, gentle old codger with a fine stock of licorice sticks. Who is the rich old lady with the eccentric ways but Lillian Gish, offering her valuable land for a Boy Scout camp because that’s where her two deceased sons used to play. And who is the nasty nephew who wants to declare her incompetent but Elliott Reid, popular heavy from several of Mr. Disney’s picture and television shows.Mixed up in their smalltown environment is a mess of parental types who are only a shade less hackneyed than their improbable sons. Considering my oath above, it grieves me to have to report that one is a drunk—a thick-tongued, maudlin widower—who dies along the way and leaves a stouthearted son who is adopted by Mr. MacMurray and his childless wife, Vera Miles. And it also grieves me to have to tell you that this lad, valiant though he is, has to undergo extreme community censure for a minor accident caused by another boy.But so it is in this splashy, sprawling picture, which is as artificial as its brightly colored sets and every bit as superficial as its lump-in-the-throat sentiments. That said, it’s only fair to inform you that the first audience yesterday morning at the Music Hall (made up largely, it appeared, of older people) was chuckling and sniffling all through the film. Maybe that bit of information will testify to the sincerity, if not the fulfillment, of my oath.The glitter of Christmas decorations is dominant in the stage show that completes the program. The highlights are a “Snowflake”‘ ballet, featuring the solo dancers Lawrence and Carroll, and a colorful dancing-dolls number by the lively Rockettes. The Brandt Brothers do a conventional teeterboard turn, and the finale is a dazzling jack-in-the box spectacle.
