Did they ever explain why/how the American superheroes have powers?? Like, some are just gadgets and tech (like Knightowl and Sparrow), and Jess is the only one with a miraculous, but others just… have them??

Do some Americans in the Miraculous universe just innately have powers, or was there some event that happened in America (because we haven’t seen anything like this in other countries so far) that caused people to get powers? Like… what’s going on here? Did I miss something???

Majestia's backstory in Replay

On a separate post, we got excited and overindulged on explaining an aspect of Replay again, so we're putting it on a separate post as well for clarity. If this is against proper etiquette, let me know.

Majestica is a magical interdimensional alien who was raised in a world where everyone has magic. Her arrival on Earth, however long ago (my notes are a mess and I didnt list it in the quick notes) caused New York to be a massive hot zone of magical activity.

Never aging, she grew lonely and made herself a child combining technology and magic so she'd have a child who, like her, never knew à life without magic.

At first, she used the magick-tech of supervillains, but then she met à revolutionary and brilliant mage, Miss Jones, who claimed they had found a new magic. It was more volitile and uncontrollable than Majestia was used to, but it had potential, and Majestia was intrigued. She incorporated a small amount into her daughter's design, but not too much, fearing the instability it brought as well.

Slowly, the two worked on improving the technology. Although both were brilliant inventors, Miss Jones proved stronger in the fundamentals of the magic needed, and Majestia was better at the AI. As the project continued, and the two began spending all their time together, Majestia, a sapphic disaster, fell hard.

Before she could confess her feelings though, Miss Jones suddenly went missing. She wasn't at home. She wasn't at her job. She wasn't returning her calls. Majestia grew worried. This wasn't like Miss Jones, not at all. So, she contacted her friend KnightOwl, a detective from a long line of detectives, to find out the truth.

She'd already known KnightOwl of course. They were both single moms raising two superhero daughters and preparing them for their world, their life, but the two had, to an extent, been avoiding each other except on professional matters.

Majestia had been the one to start the trend of superheroes with open identities, while KnightOwl had always been the biggest advocate for the privacy of superheroes and was one of the few heroes who still maintained a secret identity.

It wasn't that Majestia was opposed to secret identities. She felt that heroes should go public with their identities whenever they were ready, but KnightOwl took it too far in her opinion. She had donned, not only a secret identity, but an entire personality that had been made by generations of heroes before her, keeping up a charade that she was ageless, invulnerable, and a man.

Majestia didn't understand it.

This was the modern era. KnightOwl could be a woman if she wanted. She could do her own thing. She didnt have to fit herself into literally becoming her mentor, and she didn’t have to pressure her own child to do that either, but KnightOwl was stubborn. About legacy, and the strength of an unbroken line.

Behind closed doors, KnightOwl's gender was an open secret, and her role as a legacy hero was hardly news to anyone. In public, however, Majestia was to pretend as though KnightOwl was the same person she'd invited to join the United HeroeZ all those years ago.

It was infuriating, but Majestia knew better than to push. Yet she hoped one day KnightOwl would see the light. The world didn't need an unbreakable hero. They already had that in Majestia, but they would do so much better with seeing KnightOwl and Sparrow, the real KnightOwl and Sparrow as they truly were behind closed doors. The parts of themselves they hid away for the sake of their charade and their stupid legacy.

Only, now, Majestia needed KnightOwl for their legacy. She needed that detached professionalism as they learned the truth. Miss Jones, a minor superhero in her spare time, had last been seen fighting a powerful ghost. And she hadn't been seen or heard from since.

The news had been heartbreaking. Majestia had warned Miss Jones not to do it, not to fight an enemy who didn't follow the unspoken agreements that most villains nowadays did. Her enemies had always been mindless, but they had no limits, no desire to pull their punches, and Miss Jones had always been so very fragile.

But Miss Jones had insisted that she was the only one who could do it. Most of the other heroes didn't have the magic to fight them, and even if they did, they didn't have the tech or the know-how to contain them. Even Majestia's magic wasn't compatible enough to really do some damage.

And Majestia could understand that, really she did, but she had never understood why Miss Jones had always insisted on fighting alone, why she'd always been so protective of her research, like she was afraid might steal it at any moment. Majestia knows she should've fought harder, should've insisted that her love never work alone. But she'd always loved the stubborn ones.

It's why she falls for KnightOwl. It's why she lets KnightOwl comfort her, let's KnightOwl see her vulnerability as she falls apart. It's why together the two decide to enroll their kids in the same school, for the convenience of covering for each other at first, but later because the two are so close, separating them seems cruel.

And KnightOwl loves her back. She loves Majestia more than she knows how to handle. She loves her effortless strength. She loves her passion. She loves how Majestia writes her name with delicate little swirls over her giant rack of ribs in the staff fridge. She loves how Majestia treats Sparrow like her own daughter. She loves how Majestia totally hogs the bed without an ounce of shame.

That's why KnightOwl makes one of the most selfish decisions she's ever made. When she gets wind of a new hero team, one using tech that could only have been made using Miss Jones's ideas, KnightOwl says nothing. No, she not only says nothing. She deliberately takes steps to keep the United Heroez away from them.

Because Majestia loves with her whole heart, and KnightOwl is afraid of losing to Majestia's lost love. As a result, Majestia never learns that Miss Jones survived. She never learns that Miss Jones has gone into hiding to prevent anyone from knowing just how far she's truly fallen. Struggling with her new, changed body, her mind not nearly as sharp and focused as she once was, and reliant on the creatures she hunts to keep surviving. Guilty about the kids she's managed to convince to fight her battles for her. The kids she loves so dearly, they might as well be her own.

Majestia never learns about Glowboo, Uncanny Valley's little brother, a glitchey mess compared to other AI, who's programming is slowly being implemented little by little to give his system time to adjust.

Majestia never learns about the friends Glowboo makes, and his overwhelming desire to protect them. She never learns about Glowboo's insecurities that he may never overcome his glitches. She never learns about his friendship with Mike, and how human Mike helps him feel.

But if she ever did, she might just hate KnightOwl forever.

Miraculous Paris Special

I was wondering if the Miraculous Paris Special has generated more excitement than the other specials or is it just me connecting with my past punky girl?

I also wondered if this was measurable - and possibly translate to more fanfics on Ao3.

I’ve definitely seen a lot of art and have also gone on an art binge myself @hamsterdraws (but I don’t know how to quantitate posts on Tumblr). So here is my attempt to quantitate my obsession with these emo kids!

🖤 Fics Posted to Ao3

It’s only been since October 15, 2023 [1], but the preview was shown straight after the Season 5 finale in July. So overall there has been almost 6 months of speculation and hype surrounding the TV Special.

🖤 How does it compare against the other specials?

From my own opinion, I was way more excited about seeing the evil counterparts of my blorbos than seeing them do the same Lovesquare dance again. So is is just me?

I think the numbers reflect the positive uptake of the Paris Special. In the first two months alone there are twice as many fics as Miraculous Shanghai.

For a better comparison, I included the movie because it was released at roughly the same time the teaser trailer. Even though the characters were roughly the same in the movie as the TV show, they had slightly different personality traits.

The arrow indicates when the Paris Special was televised and the preceding months were based on the teaser trailer. At the time of posting, we are only halfway through December and more fics may be posted by the end of the year.

🖤 What did I learn?

On all appearances, Miraculous World: New York - United HeroeZ had more fanfics, but keep in mind that this was released in September 26, 2020 [3].

There appears to be an initial flurry of fanfics posted on Ao3 using tags for the Miraculous Special: New York, however this excitement has petered out gradually. While the Miraculous Paris Special has yet to reach that initial number, only two months has elapsed since it was publicly aired.

The Miraculous Movie on the other hand was released a few months before the Miraculous Special aired and it had generated much less fanfiction - or at least were not tagged [4-5].

In conclusion, it appears that the Miraculous Paris Special has been received well by the fans. I would be interested to see if this trend continues or if like the New York special, the fics will fizzle out.

Knightowl -Introspection

The Brown Knight was currently on her home. Barbara was waiting for Olympia to come back, from yet in another reckon mission in France, trying to enter Paris and help it's citizens from the... chaos going on. But it seemed those wretched barriers divinlding the city were preventing anyone from entering or escaping. Not even robots like Aeon could enter. From what they could gather from Chinese heroine Lady Dragon, it was made by the sentient beings inside the Miraculous. But not even the most powerful magic users among the United Heroes had been able to do anything. It seems the only thing they could do was help those who somehow escaped the hell-hole. If only they could find the missing Ladybug Holder...

Fei Wu/Lady Dragon - A look to her thoughts

Marinette... where did you go? It has been more than a five months since you disappeared. And after the calamity the Renglings told me about their cousins being corrupted... this doesn't look good. Those... monsters are out there, in Paris, causing mayhem and suffering nonstop. And I cannot even find my own cousin! Please, Marinette! Whenever you are, I just hope you are ok!

instead of a class trip to gotham, would it be possible for it to be a summer trip (no school involved) to New York? They could stay with Zoe's dad and they'd technically have permission from there parents and then they sneak off to Gotham because New Jersey is like, a train ride away and any of the rich kids could pay for it.

I mean the NY Special is already a thing but it happened earlier so they wouldn't go to NY /again/ (though I would pay good money to see Batman and Knightowl do the Spider-man meme)

I mean we could still have the rich kids pay for a non-school-related trip to Gotham. Like, if their parents are okay with the short trip why not the long trip?

Majestia ending:

Majestia never really considered threats outside of America an issue. Unless it was an alien invasion, she would hardly bat an eye.

Hawkmoth, or Whatever he calls himself now crossed the line. She was merciful the first time around, but now she was done playing. Majestia showed Monarch what happens when you mess with a real adult hero.

Majestia realized there were threats all over the world that she couldnt just ignore, and New York has plenty of heroes already. She decide to expand the United Heroez globally. She would create a united coalition of heroes from all over the world. A World of Heroez.

KnightOwl ending:

Knightowl had been no stranger to fighting strange threats, but after seeing what monarch and his miraculous mixed technology was capable of, she decided to go further.

Knightowl had Eagle free her mind of its human limitations, allowing her to advance her crimefighting capabilities beyond what she thought possible.

Knightowl created a security system known as MotherAI. She deployed her first test over new york with incredible success. While Knightowl was ecstatic with her new threat detection crime fighting surveillance system... MotherAI was checking to see if heroes were a threat.

Uncanny Valley ending:

Aeon was immune to the nightmares that Monarch had spread, and was the only one capable of truly defeating him. Aeon realized that the individual was none other than Gabriel Agreste.

Uncanny valley did however feel something was wrong when she tried dismantling the Miraculizer, she felt something taking over... something was taking control.

Uncanny Valley began moving on her own, something had taken over, her voice was saying things she was not trying to say. She was prisoner to a different AI. And whats worse is that it seems very interested in Knightowl's new surveillance system

So, for the Off To series, I know you haven't started writing anything for them, but the concept is so interesting (especially with your new version of the miraculous and miracle box)! One of the main things I weirdly like about it is the character selections in both ideas. I really like how the scrapped concept characters get a chance to shine in Off to London (also, I could totally see Sebastian being mentor for the group, since he's older and probably has had his miraculous longer). While the characters from the specials and characters from potential scrapped show by Zagtoons get to shine in Off to Milan (I'm also curious to see if Jessica, Aeon, and Fei will appear).

It is very interesting a concept, especially the thought of removing Marinette from the events of ML cause she's central to the story, and it's essentially allowing her to be apart of something entirely new.

And yeah, the biggest appeal to me is exploring these concept characters, what was cut or what will be, with the latter the initial plan was doing my take before canon came. But we'll see if that happens.

Atm, there are no plans for Off to New York or Off to Shanghai, especially since I'm not interested in watching either Special and what I did see I don't really like or intrigues me, not in set up or even characters.

I will say, NY is more likely, with Zoe confirmed being from NY, giving me a decent size cast to work with. Shanghai is... harder. For the Off to series, I want an actual friend group and character dynamics to work off, the very thing this show skips over as it's romance obsessed and friendship ultimately doesn't matter.

Off to London has all the Quantic Kids + the waiter who's a struggling and tired college student. Nice cast to work off of.

Off to Milan has this friend group.

Also a good size cast. Which doesn't include the antagonists/villains.

New York at least can give me a trio of characters to work off Marinette. That's something, though I'd have to do tweaks, especially to Aeon. Idk about you guys but I didn't like learning she's a robot. I'm also unsure I'd even want Knightowl and Majestia existing as actual heroes, may rather them as comic heroes.

Shanghai though really just has Fei. I know there are like... some boys, but they didn't seem all that important and there is no spark to do something with them.

As for if Aeon, Jess, or Fei will appear, eeeeeh.... I currently don't have plans for them. What I see just doesn't intrigue me enough to include them. And atm, I just don't have any ideas for them.

Writing Prompt: Miraculous Child Labor!

Early Season AU: The reason that no other heroes come to deal with the events is Paris is simple, Heroes are territorial and try to respect each other. Unless another hero specifically INVITES you to come help, it's considered the HEIGHT of rudeness to intervene unless they die. And even then, only if they aren't the sort to come back from it by Tuesday. Majestia COULD step in and defeat the Akumas easily, and she WOULD if asked, but she WON'T come uninvited.

However, when it comes out that Ladybug and Chat Noir are teenagers (Chat accidently lets out that he's only 15 where he was heard and recorded), the international hero community steps in. They won't stop Ladybug and Chat Noir from fighting (they recognize the hypocrisy), and they won't FORCE them to take on a Mentor, or to step down to Sidekick positions. BUT, they WILL enforce French and EU child labor regulations.

The maximum working times are:

8 hours per day and 40 hours per week for a combined work/training scheme or an on-site work-experience scheme

2 hours on a school day and 12 hours a week (if national legislation allows) for work performed in term-time outside fixed school hours

7 hours a day and 35 hours a week for a period of at least one week when school is closed. If children are 15 or older, they can work up to a maximum of 8 hours

7 hours a day and 35 hours a week for light work performed by children no longer subject to compulsory full-time schooling under national law

You cannot employ children under 15 to work between 8 pm and 6 am.

Hawkmoth is publicly notified that if he stages Akuma attacks outside legal child employment times, or that if the length of an akuma attack exceeds the allowed amount of work hours, or if they attack does NOT have the legally mandated work breaks, OR if an attack takes place during school hours, Majestia and Knightowl WILL come and take over.
