Tell us, why do you think Commodore failed?
Hoooooo boy... take this with a grain of salt, but here's how I see things based on my incomplete knowledge of the history. I need to do more research on this front, read a few of the books from folks who were there, but here goes nothing:
So, during the calculator wars of the early/mid 1970s, Texas Instruments was knocking competitors out of the game left and right by charging through the nose for the chips they sold. Commodore was one of their customers, and was nearly put out of business as a result. Jack Tramiel's solution was to buy MOS Technologies, effectively putting an end to CBM's reliance on TI's semiconductors because they could suddenly produce their own for much of their big ticket items.
Fast forward to 1981, and Commodore's VIC-20 is in a price war with Texas Instruments' TI-99/4A home computer. Jack kept lowering the price, and TI kept having to do the same to compete, so they were selling at a loss -- against a wildly popular home computer at the time. Jack, ever-vindictive in his motives (business is war, as he liked to say), cut the price of the VIC-20 at a CES show, which killed TI as a competitor in that segment in the market, but he did so at great cost to Commodore.
The way he cut the prices on the VIC also included peripherals, which the various vendors relied on to make their profits. They charged back those losses to Commodore. The result tipped the balance to diminish Jack's position in the company, and Irving Gould ousted him. Jack jumped ship with his sons and went to go work for Atari, selling the ST series machines, which would go on to compete with the Commodore Amiga series.
The problem was that Jack was the big force behind giving the company direction, especially when guiding advertising. The C64 sold itself, which was a blessing and a curse. It meant Commodore never really had to try all that hard to make good ads for it, so when they had to work harder to push later products, they kinda sucked at it. This really hurt the Amiga out of the gate, because nobody knew how to sell this golden child they just acquired, meaning it took many years to find its legs in the market.
Weird side projects continued to build up, and company focus was lost. Engineers churned out some amazing products, but without a guiding force at the top steering the company, and advertising dropping the ball in selling the powerful machines they were creating, the company was already in a slow death spiral. The IBM PC compatibles had already taken hold of much of the market, and were continuing to chip away at Commodore's market share, which wasn't helped by Jack himself fighting the company he founded on the side of Atari. The ST and the Amiga were fighting for the scraps left behind by IBM's juggernaut platform.
Commodore was a dead man walking from the moment Jack just had to get revenge on TI for trying to screw him out of the market in the 70s. It's just that nobody knew what the repercussions would be when he did that...

The Difference Between Cultural Identity and Class-Based Behaviour: A Garveyite Perspective on Black Consciousness, Liberation, and Self-Determination
From a Garveyite perspective, which prioritizes Pan-African unity, self-reliance, and the restoration of African/black consciousness, there is a crucial distinction between cultural identity and class-based behaviour that many Black people fail to recognize. This confusion has been intentionally manufactured through colonialism, white supremacy, and capitalist exploitation to keep Black people divided, assimilated, and disconnected from their true heritage.
At its core:
Cultural identity is the collective historical, linguistic, spiritual, and ancestral continuity of a people.
Class-based behaviour is a social construct based on material wealth, economic status, and Western-defined respectability.
This analysis will examine:
Defining Cultural Identity vs. Class-Based Behaviour.
How Colonialism and White Supremacy Engineered This Confusion.
Examples of This Confusion in Black Communities.
Consequences of Mistaking Class for Culture.
The Garveyite Solution: Returning to Pan-African Identity and Self-Determination
1. Defining Cultural Identity vs. Class-Based Behavior
To understand why many Black people confuse the two, we must clearly define them.
Cultural Identity (Rooted in Ancestry & Collective Consciousness)
A people’s shared history, values, traditions, language, spiritual beliefs, and customs.
In the African diaspora, cultural identity is tied to Pan-Africanism, black nationalism, African spirituality, and indigenous traditions.
Remains constant regardless of economic status—it is not defined by wealth or material possessions.
Rooted in African/black philosophy, communal living, and intergenerational knowledge.
Example: Practising African naming traditions, speaking African languages, honouring ancestors, wearing traditional African clothing, and celebrating Black resistance movements are expressions of cultural identity.
Class-Based Behavior (Rooted in Social and Economic Status)
Dictated by income, education level, and Western ideals of success.
Tied to capitalism, assimilation, and Eurocentric concepts of "civilization."
Can change depending on wealth—a person’s social status can rise or fall, but their cultural identity remains.
Enforces Western respectability politics, which dictates how a Black person must dress, speak, and behave to be deemed "successful" in white society.
Example: Some Black elites believe that speaking “proper English,” wearing suits, or getting degrees from Western institutions makes them more cultured—when in reality, these are simply class markers imposed by European systems.
Garveyite Perspective: Black people must recognize that cultural identity is about ancestral roots, Pan-Africanism, and collective liberation—not white validation through social mobility.
2. How Colonialism and White Supremacy Engineered This Confusion
Black people did not naturally develop this confusion—it was imposed on them through slavery, colonial rule, and systemic oppression.
A) Cultural Erasure Under Slavery & Colonialism
African languages were banned, and European tongues were forced upon enslaved Africans.
Indigenous African religions were demonized, and Christianity was imposed to maintain control.
Western education was introduced as the only legitimate form of intelligence.
European clothing and social etiquette were enforced as signs of "civilization."
Tribal and ethnic divisions were created to prevent unity among African peoples.
Example: In the Caribbean, enslaved Africans were deliberately separated from those who spoke the same language to prevent rebellion. In America, Black people were taught that English-speaking, well-dressed house slaves were “superior” to field slaves—creating a false class hierarchy.
B) The Rise of Respectability Politics
After slavery, Black people were pressured to prove their worth to white society by adopting European norms of behavior:
Speaking English "properly" was seen as a sign of intelligence.
Dressing in Western attire (suits, ties, dresses) was deemed respectable.
Christianity was used to reinforce submission, obedience, and assimilation.
Black professionals distanced themselves from poor, working-class Black people.
Example: The Talented Tenth philosophy promoted by W.E.B. Du Bois suggested that a small, highly educated Black elite should lead the race—while Garveyism argued for mass empowerment, economic self-reliance, and a return to African traditions.
Garveyite Perspective: Any ideology that promotes integration into a white supremacist society instead of African self-determination is anti-Black.
3. Examples of This Confusion in Black Communities
Many Black people still mistake economic status and Western respectability for cultural identity. Here are some examples:
A) Language & Speech
Some Black people believe that African-American Vernacular English (AAVE), Patois, Creole, or African languages are “ghetto”, while standard English is “educated.”
In reality, African linguistic structures influence these languages, making them part of our cultural identity.
Example: Many Caribbean and African immigrants are conditioned to believe that abandoning their mother tongues and adopting British or American English is a sign of intelligence, when in fact, this is an example of colonial indoctrination.
B) Clothing & Grooming
Some Black people believe that wearing African/black clothing is “backwards” or “unprofessional”, while wearing a suit and tie makes one respectable.
But a suit and tie is a European standard of dress, not an African or black one.
Example: Black and African clothing that remains uninfluenced by European styles is the kente cloth of Ghana. Woven by the Akan people for centuries, kente is a traditionally handcrafted fabric made from silk and cotton, featuring intricate patterns that hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. It has been worn by Ghanaian royalty and remains a symbol of heritage, status, and pride. Unlike European textiles, kente's designs, colours, and weaving techniques are rooted entirely in African traditions, showcasing a purely indigenous fashion identity.
C) Education & Intelligence
Some believe that having a degree from a Western university makes someone more cultured.
But Western education often promotes anti-Black narratives and European supremacy.
Example: Many Black intellectuals look down on grassroots organizers and Pan-African movements, seeing themselves as superior due to their Western degrees.
Garveyite Perspective: True intelligence is not determined by a degree from Harvard or Oxford—it is measured by self-education, community impact, and Pan-African consciousness.
4. Consequences of Mistaking Class for Culture
This confusion has caused major harm within the Black community:
A) Classism & Division
Black elites often distance themselves from the working class.
Africans and Caribbeans sometimes look down on Black Americans, believing their struggles stem from a lack of "ambition" instead of systemic racism.
Example: African immigrants are often taught that Black Americans are "lazy," when in reality, Black Americans face systemic barriers that prevent economic mobility.
B) Cultural Assimilation & Loss of Identity
Black people abandon African languages, traditions, and values in favour of Western norms.
African spirituality is demonized, while Christianity and Islam remain dominant.
Example: The African American upper class in the 1900s married lighter-skinned partners to gain social status—showing that whiteness, not African identity, was their measure of success.
Garveyite Perspective: Liberation comes through Pan-African unity and cultural reclamation—not integration into white systems.
5. The Solution: Reclaiming a Pan-African Consciousness
To break free from this confusion, Black people must return to authentic Pan-African identity and self-determination.
A) Prioritize African-Centered Education
Learn about African history, languages, and traditions outside of Western institutions.
Stop equating European education with intelligence.
B) Define Success on Our Own Terms
Success is not white approval—it is economic independence, cultural pride, and collective self-reliance.
Stop chasing corporate jobs, luxury brands, and European validation.
Garveyite Perspective: Only through self-sufficiency, cultural pride, and Pan-African unity can Black people truly be free.
Final Thought
Black people must stop confusing class-based Western behaviours with true African/black cultural identity. Only by reclaiming Pan-African consciousness, rejecting respectability politics, and prioritizing self-determination can true liberation be achieved.

Meet the Townies: ᴇᴛʜᴀɴ ᴀɴᴅ ɪꜱᴀᴀᴄ
Ethan Harper grew up an only child and spent his formative years immersed in the world of engineering. His fascination with machines and technology was inspired by his father who was a skilled mechanic. While attending high school, Ethan secretly began working on a personal project where he attempted to design and build a robot. He poured countless hours into this endeavor, often sacrificing teenage milestones to tend to this robot he later named ISAAC (Intelligent System and Advanced Assistant Companion). Upon graduating High School, Ethan enrolled at Foxbury Institute where he pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his time there, Ethan excelled in his studies, consistently earning top marks and impressing his professors with his innovative ideas and dedication to the craft. In his free time, he continued to work on ISAAC since the university's state-of-the-art facilities and access to cutting-edge resourced allowed him to make significant improvements. He refined ISAAC's design, enhanced its capabilities and incorporated the latest advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics. After graduating with honors from Foxbury, Ethan quickly began carving out a professional life for himself. His reputation as a brilliant young engineer opened many doors and he received numerous job offers from leading tech companies. Ethan's expertise eventually caught the attention of the military who offered him a position to develop a project for them. Though he initially hesitated, the opportunity was too enticing to pass up. Despite his professional success and the accolades he received for his work, Ethan felt an intense void in his life that he couldn't seem to fill. His relentless pursuit of perfection in his projects, particularly with ISAAC, often left him feeling isolated. The extensive time he spent in the lab, both during his time at Foxbury and throughout his career, meant that his personal life took a backseat. Ethan's social interactions were limited and he found it difficult to connect with others on a deeper level. His closest colleagues, at one point, noticed and gently encouraged him to step out of his comfort zone and try dating. Ethan reluctantly agreed and while the dates he went on did not lead to a lasting relationship, it helped Ethan open up and see the value in balancing his personal and professional life. As he continued to make strides in his professional career, Ethan was approached by his alma mater, Foxbury institute, with an invitation to teach part-time. The university recognized his achievements and believed that his expertise could inspire and educate the next generation of engineers. Teaching at Foxbury became a profoundly rewarding experience for him. Standing before eager students, he shared his knowledge and passion. He found joy in helping them navigate their own paths and would often encourage them to think creatively and push the boundaries of what was possible. Meanwhile, ISAAC continued to improve every day, becoming an indispensable part of Ethan's life. By this point, ISAAC's capabilities extended far beyond what Ethan originally intended. ISAAC excelled in research assistance, laboratory management, and technical maintenance. The robot could analyze complex data, run simulations and suggest innovative solutions to engineering problems which significantly sped up Ethan's workflow. ISAAC also managed clerical tasks such as organizing files, scheduling meetings, and maintaining equipment, allowing Ethan to focus on more critical aspects of his projects. ISAAC'S home automation features made Ethan's personal life a breeze, as well. The robot could control various smart devices, perform household chores, such as cleaning and grocery shopping, and even cook meals based on Ethan's dietary preferences. Recently, Ethan and ISAAC relocated to the town of Oasis Springs due to a job offer at a cutting-edge research lab.

Vettel Backs Schumacher For F1 Comeback With Williams
Mick Schumacher has been kinked with a return to the grid to replace a struggling Logan Sargeant at Williams.
Four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has asserted Mick Schumacher is deserving of an F1 comeback at Williams. Following Logan Sargeant's heavy crash during FP3 at Zandvoort, reports emerged that the American driver could be dropped ahead of the Italian Grand Prix this weekend. Sargeant's time with Williams was already confirmed to be numbered prior to the incident as the Grove-based squad announced during the summer break that he would be replaced in 2025 by Carlos Sainz. However, in the wake of his latest difficult weekend, his exit could come even sooner - with ex-Haas driver Schumacher emerging as a candidate. Vettel has backed the 25-year-old to step into the seat in place of Sargeant. "If it were my decision, I would tend to favour Mick," Vettel told Bild. "Of course, I'm a bit biased because he's my friend, but in my eyes he's the best solution. Mick has two years of experience in Formula 1 as a driver, has a very broad technical insight thanks to his current role [as Mercedes reserve driver]. He knows the Mercedes engine and has matured a lot as a person since leaving Haas."
Vettel states people have 'wrong image' of Schumacher
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has also voiced support for Schumacher in light of the possibility of a return to the grid; however, Red Bull reserve Liam Lawson has also emerged as a contender after Christian Horner confirmed the team would be open to loaning out the New Zealander. Vettel pinpointed that Schumacher's knowledge of the remaining tracks on the calendar (bar Las Vegas) should place him as the favourite. "Mick is a good racing driver," Vettel added. "He's won Formula 2 and Formula 3. That's no mean feat. Now he has matured even more. I'm sure that he could impress at Williams, especially as, unlike other candidates, he knows the Formula 1 driver line-up and the circuits. That's a big advantage. I hope he gets the chance and can show the world what he's capable of. Mick has been unfairly branded because of his two years at Haas. Of course, he made mistakes, but the car wasn't competitive. Many people have the wrong image of him."

In Hindu mythology, Vishvakarma stands as the celestial architect, the divine craftsman - he is revered as the deity who embodies technical expertise, precision, and artistry, crafting not only the grand palaces of gods but also the tools and weapons essential for the maintenance of cosmic order.
Among his most renowned creations is the Vajra, the thunderbolt weapon wielded by Indra, the king of the gods.
The story of the Vajra and its association with Vishvakarma provides profound insights into his association with craftsmanship, the transformative power of creation, and his connection to Chitra Nakshatra, the star of craftsmanship, beauty and brilliance.
Vishvakarma's role in Hindu cosmology is multi-faceted. He is not just an architect but the divine engineer who designs and builds the infrastructure of the universe.
Temples, flying chariots (vimanas), and heavenly weapons are among his creations, each infused with meticulous detail and ingenuity.
His work reflects the union of functionality and aesthetic beauty - and the mastery of form fitting function.. making him a figure who bridges the realms of material and spiritual excellence.
He is the closest thing in vedic literature to the Freemasons notion of Tubal-Cain - the 8th man from Adam - Tubal-Cain is often regarded in Masonic lore as the progenitor of craftsmanship and the arts of manipulating metals..
His ability to forge tools from brass and iron has come to symbolize humanity’s advancement through skill and knowledge.. this mastery of the material world parallels the spiritual refining of oneself, paralleling ones ability to transform a base metal into gold.
The Vajra, one of Vishvakarma’s most iconic creations, is steeped in cosmological symbolism.
When the demon Vritra threatened the universe by withholding the waters of life, the gods turned to Vishvakarma for a solution. At the behest of Indra, Vishvakarma crafted the Vajra from the indestructible spine of the sage Dadhichi, who willingly sacrificed his body for the greater good.
The Vajra symbolizes immense power, necessary destruction, and the ability to shatter obstacles obstructing dharmic and jnana related pursuits.
The weapon’s genesis from the selfless sacrifice of Dadhichi also mirrors the creative process that often demands destruction and transformation..a theme that resonates deeply with the essence of Chitra Nakshatra.
Chitra, the nakshatra presided over by Vishvakarma, is symbolized by a shining jewel or a pearl, representing brilliance, craftsmanship, and the allure of creation.
Its shakti is the ability to accumulate merit in life (punya cayani shakti). Its basis above is the law. Its basis below is the truth
Chitra inspires beauty that is both external and internal, much like Vishvakarma's own works, which harmonize aesthetic splendor with functional perfection.
Chitra’s energy emphasizes attention to detail, creativity, and the transformative potential of art and science - the ability to blend all of these in order to conquer obstacles, to use these for war against spiritual and intellectual opposition.
Ruled by Mars, much like the ruling deity and the items in which he crafts.. this Nakshatras brilliance is very tied to warrior endeavors.. I often associate arms dealers with this nakshatra.
Weaponry and war is not merely a tool of blind destruction but a means of restoring balance..
Chitra’s brilliance inspires the realization of divine blueprints, where beauty and purpose converge.
Vishvakarma’s legacy as the creator of the Vajra and his association with Chitra Nakshatra reveal a profound narrative of creativity, sacrifice, and cosmic balance.
Vishvakarma and Chitra, reflect upon perfect craftsmanship - the ability to create and imbue an object with a balance between order, function, it's purpose, aesthetic and a carrier of divine will.
I connect very deeply with this Nakshatra, with my Mercury being exalted in Chitra (virgo) and Vargottama (same sign in d1 chart as d9) in the 6th house

Hey! Do you have any advice for learning how to win in Gnosia? I've played 65 loops and I feel like I am losing constantly and even when I win, it often doesn't feel like it was because I figured it out and played well.
I'll do my best!
Step 1: Learn to be Remnan.
You won't get far in Gnosia if people get annoyed at you and either stick you in cold sleep or shiv you in your sleep. You can alleviate this by leveling up your stats (particularly Stealth), but you also need to learn how to talk without pissing anyone off.
You don't want to stand out by talking too much or talking too little. And as the loops go on, some characters will unlock skills like Retaliate and Don't Be Fooled which make it dangerous to directly accuse them.
The solution? Until you're confident you know who to accuse, wait for other characters to act, then react. If someone Doubts a character you're suspicious of, chime in. If someone Covers that character, argue. If a bunch of people Doubt a character you think is safe...well, speaking up in their defense too much will make people think you're secretly allies, which is never a good look.
Step 2: Learn to be Raqio.
The most important tool in your toolbelt is recognizing events which make someone obviously a Gnosia (or other liar), or contrariwise ones which make someone obviously safe. This includes using the Definite Human and Definite Enemy skills, but it's not limited to that. It also means incorporating things you know that aren't public knowledge (like your own role, and lies you've noticed), and identifying suspicious behaviors.
This is obviously useful for identifying various enemies as crew, or identifying the Bug as Gnosia. But Gnosia can also benefit from learning Raqio's lessons, so they know what not to do. This goes double if you claimed a role. I still remember that time I was doing a perfectly good run as a fake Doctor, then carelessly identified the most recent cold storage victim as Gnosia. Jonas smacked me with Definite Enemy and, well, you can guess how things went after that.
Step 3: Learn to be Setsu
The characters in Gnosia all work on the same rules, but they don't all act the same. They tend to have certain strategies they pursue, certain characters they like or dislike, and so forth.
Pay attention, both to gameplay patterns and to cutscenes. If someone works with someone they rarely work with and also threw out an airlock once, something unusual is going on. Not always something suspicious—maybe he's the only Definite Human around—but it's something to keep an eye on.
Also: Learn which characters tend to accuse suspicious people and which tend to accuse random people. Accusations can be a useful guide for voting before you have any actual information (or deciding who to investigate, if you're Engineer).
Step 4: Learn to be SQ
This kind of circles back to the beginning, but instead of just trying not to make any enemies, you need to try making friends. Or at least people who vote the same way as you.
In the early game, try to make friends. Ideally a friend will find you, but sometimes you need to be proactive. Identify people on board who A. don't hate you, B. are likely to vote (or, if Gnosia, kill) based on personal relationships more than logic, and C. probably won't get sent to cold sleep tomorrow. Kukrushka, SQ, and Comet are my go-to picks.
Once identified, visit them at night to simultaneously check how much they like you and slightly increase how much they like you. In the day, try to protect them from malicious defamation. But don't try too hard—a Gnosia pal is no pal at all, and a pal who everyone thinks is Gnosia isn't much better.
Get multiple friends if you can, but many games don't last that long.
When I've identified a likely Gnosia—especially if I'm pretty sure they're the last one—I get a lot more aggressive. Exaggerate anyone else who Doubts them, or Seek Help if they're unpopular. Shut down any argument they make. Start proactively Doubting. Your friend(s) will probably join in, alongside anyone else who independently started doubting the target.
Step 5: Learn to be Jonas
That crazy old bastard didn't make it this long by making the right choice every time. He survived by making mistakes, learning from them, and getting lucky along the way.
Keep trying! You'll figure it out eventually. Or you'll accumulate enough XP from runs where you died without getting Notes that you'll level-grind ahead of everyone. Probably the first one.

Concept for interstellar object encounters developed, then simulated using a spacecraft swarm
Interstellar objects are among the last unexplored classes of solar system objects, holding tantalizing information about primitive materials from exoplanetary star systems. They pass through our solar system only once in their lifetime at speeds of tens of kilometers per second, making them elusive.
Hiroyasu Tsukamoto, a faculty member in the Department of Aerospace Engineering in the Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has developed Neural-Rendezvous—a deep-learning-driven guidance and control framework to autonomously encounter these extremely fast-moving objects.
The research is published in the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics and on the arXiv preprint server.
"A human brain has many capabilities: talking, writing, etcetera," Tsukamoto said. "Deep learning creates a brain specialized for one of these capabilities with domain-specific knowledge. In this case, Neural-Rendezvous learns all the information it needs to encounter an ISO, while also considering the safety-critical, high-cost nature of space exploration."
Tsukamoto said Neural-Rendezvous is based on contraction theory for data-driven nonlinear control systems, which he developed for his Ph.D. at Caltech, while this project was a collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he spent his time as a post-doctoral research affiliate.
"Our key contribution is not just in designing the specialized brain, but in proving mathematically that it works. For example, with a human brain we learn from experience how to navigate safely while driving. But what are the mathematics behind it? How do we know and how can we make sure we won't hit anyone?"
In space, Neural-Rendezvous autonomously predicts a spacecraft's best action, based on data, but with a formal probabilistic bound on its distance to the target ISO.
Tsukamoto said there are two main challenges: The interstellar object is a high-energy, high-speed target, and its trajectory is always poorly constrained due to the unpredictable nature of its visit.
"We're trying to encounter an astronomical object that streaks through our solar system just once and we don't want to miss the opportunity. Even though we can approximate the dynamics of ISOs ahead of time, they still come with large state uncertainty because we cannot predict the timing of their visit. That's a challenge."
The speed and uncertainty of ISO encounters are also why the spacecraft must be able to think on its own.
"Unlike traditional approaches in which you design almost everything before you launch a spacecraft, to encounter an ISO, a spacecraft has to have something like a human brain, specifically designed for this mission, to fully respond to data onboard in real time."
Tsukamoto also demonstrated Neural-Rendezvous using multi-spacecraft simulators called M-STAR and tiny drones called Crazyflies. While he was at JPL, two Illinois aerospace undergraduate students, Arna Bhardwaj and Shishir Bhatta, contacted him to work on a research project using Neural-Rendezvous.
"Because of the speed and uncertainty, it's challenging to obtain a clear view of an ISO during a flyby with 100% accuracy, even with Neural-Rendezvous. Arna and Shishir wanted to show that Neural-Rendezvous could benefit from a multi-spacecraft concept."
To theoretically justify the empirical observations from the M-STAR and Crazyfly demonstrations, their research looked at how to mathematically maximize the information gathered from the ISO encounter using a swarm of spacecraft.
"Now we have an additional layer of decision-making during the ISO encounter," Tsukamoto said. "How do you optimally position multiple spacecraft to maximize the information you can get out of it? Their solution was to distribute the spacecraft to visually cover the highly probable region of the ISO's position, which is driven by Neural-Rendezvous."
Tsukamoto said he was impressed with the level of dedication and academic potential demonstrated by Bhardwaj and Bhatta.
"The topics explored in Neural-Rendezvous can be advanced even for Ph.D. students. Arna and Shishir were very productive and worked hard, and I was surprised to see them publish a paper, given that this field initially was entirely new to them. They did a great job.
"And while the Neural-Rendezvous is more of a theoretical concept, their work is our first attempt to make it much more useful, more practical."

also i dont think you guys know how engineers are tested bc technical writing is a small subset of that and computer-based mathematical modeling is something you have to know how to do. any stem degree nowadays is going to require you to know some basics around coding and the more advanced the mathematics you must model the more familiar you are going to need to be with using algorithmic solutions (which are, due to the ai boom, being called ai where they were not before despite loosely fitting the description). theres a large body of mathematical problems that cannot (i mean this CANNOT) be solved by hand and must use a computer
and engineers specifically have to demonstrate knowledge via practical models, both building scale models irl and in computer programs to demonstrate they've mastered the fundamentals

every since I watched that section in conspiracy on the left about how Martin Luther King Jr. was most likely killed by the FBI, but it's not a fact, I've been being a lot more careful about seperating facts, from stories, and stories from falsehoods. In "The world is not ending" you make this fascinating claim about how the confluence of rising awareness, and worsening living conditions are guaranteed to bring around socialism eventually. You speak about it very confidently, but thinking back on the video I can't remember any hard evidence that backed the claim. Would you call the coming rise of socialism a fact? I would be very skeptical of anyone claiming to know a timeframe for when socialism is bound to rise, do you think that's the correct relationship to have with this prediction? Thank you for reading my question, mushroom gang rise up!
Thank for this thoughtful and sparkling question!
A crucial point of the exercise in Conspiracy on the Left is that "the FBI killed Martin Luther King" is a belief that is not accepted by what we call "authorised knowledge" but arguably is backed up by it. We find ourselves in a conundrum with regard to our own beliefs because we can be sceptical but ultimately we do believe them. So if the mainstream consensus agrees for instance that Becky said she was going to kill John, and also that she was found holding a smoking gun over John's body, but Becky says she didn't, we can see how we have to form our own conclusions based on available facts and sometimes against the claims of others.
So to step back from the language of believe for a second, both "the FBI killed MLK" and "climate change makes socialism inevitable" are 'knowledge claims'. Yes we should be sceptical, but ultimate scepticism requires material, empirical and rational analysis, not just opposition. I believe the statement to be true and intend to elaborate on, for instance, the economics of it in later writing, but I do encourage others to think about on their own terms. That said I have found all arguments so far to the contrary to be pale and unconvincing. The fact that capitalism can't stop climate change is just that, a fact. However the main drives toward a capitalist solution revolve around speculative markets, fictitious capital and a promise that borrowing on the credit of the future will allow them to somehow engineer a way out. As an absolute baseline, socialists should also be allowed to make a similar claim "socialism can stop climate change" and have it evaluated rationally, and if the truth of it bears out and enough people understand it then revolution is inevitable. We have to continuously and urgently incorporate the human element into "predictions" and one such way we can do that is to see what facts will be self evident to people as conditions change.
To lay out my points a little more clearly for evaluation:
-capitalism cannot stop climate change (known fact)
-capitalism will exacerbate climate change to a point where capitalism is impossible (reasonable conclusion from known fact)
-at some point before this happens, people will become aware it is going to happen and abandon capitalism (knowledge claim)
-if we work towards socialism now, the socialism we could have would be better than one we are forced into (reasonable assertion but still of course, a knowledge claim)
