Malana Dam accident in Kullu: Flood wreaks havoc, vehicles washed away, relief work underway
Tumblr media
Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, August 2, 2025: A coffer dam of the Malana-I Hydro Power Project in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh partially breached due to cloudburst and heavy rainfall on the night of July 31, 2024, leading to a flash flood in the Parvati river. The incident caused massive destruction in the downstream areas, with several vehicles—a hydra, a dumper, a rock breaker, and a camper or car—swept away by the strong current of water. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident .
What happened?
On July 31, at around 11 pm, a cloudburst in the Malana area led to a sudden rise in water levels in the Malana Nullah and Parvati River. Due to heavy rains and silt, the coffer dam of the Malana-I hydro project could not withstand the pressure of water and partially collapsed. This flood not only damaged the structures of the project, but also caused chaos in the surrounding areas. Several temporary bridges were washed away in the Parvati valley, and the floodwater reached the settlements in the lower areas.
A video viral on social media showed that the fast flowing water devastated roads, bridges, and nearby structures. The Kullu District Disaster Management Authority issued an alert in Bhuntar and surrounding areas, advising people to stay away from rivers and drains.
Damage assessment
– Vehicles swept away : A hydra, dumper, rock breaker, and a car were swept away in the strong current of the flood
Damage to structures : The barrage control room, intake gates, and desilting chambers of the Malana-I project suffered extensive damage. Many structures of the project, including roads, bridges, and the 132 kV switchyard, were completely destroyed.
Nearby areas affected :
Houses and homestays were damaged in villages along the Parvati river, such as Baldhi. A vegetable market in the Manikaran valley was also swept away by the floods.
The Malana-I (86 MW) and Malana-II (100 MW) projects suffered heavy damage. The barrage control room, intake gates, and switchyard were washed away. The Kullu administration immediately deployed teams of the NDRF, police, and home guards. Of the 33 employees trapped in the tunnel of Malana-I, 29 were rescued on August 1, and the remaining four were evacuated on August 2. Deputy Commissioner Torul S. Ravish announced an interim relief of Rs 1.5 lakh to the affected and a holiday in schools.
Environmentalists have questioned the safety and environmental impacts of hydro projects. They say the Dam Safety Act is not being followed. Locals are worried about connectivity to Malana village and rising ration prices. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has sought help from the Centre, and Home Minister Amit Shah has assured assistance. Relief work is underway, but the threat of floods and landslides remains. The incident highlights the vulnerabilities of hydro projects in Himachal.

Yallah bismillah.
Prior to it, I reluctantly severed a portion of cherished habits, bounded by their whispers of "safety". My heart shattered discreetly, and I bore the weight of excruciating pain in silence. If only you understood, my gem.
Your first letter evoked such profound emotions within me that it brought me to tears—tears I had to suppress while discarding the copy. I know that one day I may not be ready to face the uncertainty ahead, yet I will surrender to Allah with unwavering faith.
As a result of the incident, the price I have paid—both physically and emotionally—has been significant. Yet, alhamdulillah wa syukru lillah for all the tests I've faced.
As of today, I am still working to forgive myself for my own reluctant actions. I know you encouraged me to let go, but the truth is, it still hurts. I wish there was an alternative, and Allah knows. Allah truly knows.
Miraculously, Allah revealed to me that my reluctant efforts were not in vain when the incident occurred. I cannot deny that it somehow bore fruit. Allahu akbar. Yet, my heart bleeds even more.
In times of uncertainty, you are my constant worry, day in and day out. However, on the day the incident unfolded, you caught a glimpse of my worries—my daily concerns for you. And I experienced, even if just for a moment, the quiet burdens you carry each day. For that, alhamdulillah, kullu kheir ya Rab.
Since that incident, everything has changed. The more I strive to be strong, the more fragile I become. You urged me to let go of my steadfastness, reminding me that you are part of it. In doing so, I felt pushed away and burdened by my own guilt. Now, I’m torn between continuing to fight for what I believe in or stepping back for your sake. I stand humbled, for the love of Allah and for you.
There’s a hidden treasure I’ve never known— until you appeared, a godsend, my little gem. How did I find myself shattering my own rare shell, opening up to deep care, love, and worry? You hold a secret place in my heart’s quiet space. My precious one, I ask Allah to keep you near Him, to shelter you under His divine care.
The light of my life, in the whispers of love that bind us, we both long for the profound connection with our Creator. Submissively asking Him to safeguard our Iman and draw us ever closer to Him, the Creator of all that exists.
My little gem, my sunshine; my son.
قدر الله.

Crawling up from hell
Far away in the distant mountains, along the ranges of Lesser Himalayas, near the small town of Kullu, lived Rena and her son Nishat. In a two storied accomodation made of wood and tin, Rena made extraordinary efforts to make their home lovely and prosperous. Nishat worked for a constructor as a truck driver and Rena owned the only saloon in the locality. They made a good living for a comfortable lifestyle amongst the hills. Every day they woke up early and shared breakfast before leaving for work. It was a lifestyle to be amazed of, to be admired.
Nishat usually woke up first. He made sure the breakfast was on the table before the dawn for Rena and himself. He helped around the house as much as he could. He was really proud of his new pickup truck. He was driving his mother to work that day.
After a rise of 70 metres of altitude, there is a sharp turn with broken rocks hanging by the edges. He sped up a little, lost control and his truck skid along the turn. It hit a rock and went flying across the road. The truck hung by the edges, supported by a few branches as they both were stuck inside. Rena was knocked out unconscious. With no access to help nearby, Nishat slowly moved from the driver's seat and unbuckled himself free. He moved along the windshield and got hold of Rena who was still unconscious. He climbed down the truck with her and grabbed the nearest branch along the edge. As soon as he pressed his foot on the branch, he heard a loud snap as he saw his truck slide down the steep edge and land down below, destructed. Nishat pulled himself and Rena up and sat down by the road. Nishat bled furiously as he slowly blacked out.In about ten minutes, a car passing by found them and brought them to the hospital in town.
Rena suffered several concussions but was fairly unharmed. Nishat broke a knuckle and suffered a few head injuries. But they were spared of their life. This incident didn't make any headlines or covers but shook a household and traumatized families.
