For me, no image distills '80s one-on-one martial arts combat more perfectly than a Van Damme flying kick to the face. Trying to depict this with as much impact as possible, I painted Dux from a low angle, soaring over the crowd and blasting out of frame through Chong Li's face. I split the composition in half with diagonal speed lines, emphasizing the iconic clash that inspired a generation of fighting games and the sport of mixed martial arts.

Mikio Ueda (Japan) vs Ilya Karpenko (Russia) - a Technique Battle ~This is Kyokushin Karate

Kyokushin Karate world champon Mikio Ueda (3-1) continues on his journey into the sport of MMA. The Japanese heavyweight has won 3 straight since getting KOed in his first MMA fight. Granted it's been mostly old men and a sumo wrestler. He's got a young fighter next, Polish heavyweight Przemysław Kowalczyk (3-0). I don't know much about Kowalczyk but he looks like a "real" fighter. He's got a bunch of amateur experience and has progressed as much as a 3-0 fighter probably should have in terms of opponents. He's listed at 25 but looks like 40+ so who knows.

Ueda returns to action this Sunday (June 9) as part of RIZIN 47.

Mikio Ueda 100-Men Kumite (attempt)

The 100-man kumite is one of the most difficult undertakings in martial arts. It is exactly as it sounds - one blackbelt going 100 rounds of kumite against 100 similarly skilled opponents. The list of people who have successfully accomplished this is small. Mikio Ueda is THE world champion in Kyokushin karate and he only made it up to 60 before the doctors wouldn't let him continue.

Speaking of Mikio Ueda, after a brief stint in MMA, Ueda is following many other great Karatekas and taking his skills to kickboxing. Ueda will make his kickboxing debut on the ReBOOT～K-1 ReBIRTH～ card this Saturday (Sept. 9) which will air on DAZN outside of Japan. His opponent will be former K-1 cruiserweight champion K-Jee.
