Saw a twitter post about Near and L with the "do I look like him?" caption and it got me to feel so viscerally sad because... he does. He does look like L. The similarities are so uncanny that, had I not known they're not related, I would have guessed they are. And not just appearance too... some of his mannerisms, the way he speaks and reasons... all of Near is haunted by the traces of a man he has never even met.

It's not really surprising: he was groomed by Wammy's to be just like L. He never really rejected that notion, either; he just embraced it as something that has always been part of him, because how could he refuse something that was there from the beginning? He was just a kid. A very young one at that.

But someone who did reject that was Mello. Or, rather, he felt rejected by that system, so he turned his back on it -- at least partially. The effects of it are still felt even in its rejection - his visceral hatred of Near being a lampant example. But I wonder if that rejection, that search for individuality, is what made Near so endeared to Mello in spite of the other very openly hating him.

Mello became his own person and Near, forever bound to be one of two parts of L, admired that. Because he couldn't do it.

shanks & buggy, and giving up on your dreams

before my latest reread/catch-up on one piece i had not given the history between buggy and shanks much thought, except to wonder a little how they went from this:

(in the chapter 19 flashback, set a day or so before buggy gets his devil fruit powers; they're at most 12 here.)

to this:

(a single panel flashback in chapter 434 to the day roger was executed; they're 15 here.)

like. what happened in the intervening (three?) years to make shanks think he might get a positive response to this request? and why is he making the request in the first place? he's the one who said they should go their own ways, originally.

six hundred fifty chapters later, we get a… partial answer. but not to shanks' side of the story.

(from the chapter 1082 flashback, of course; this panel is from an unspecified time, but it's beanie buggy so probably closer to 12 than 15)

young buggy (the littlest bug, omg ;~;) sees shanks' potential and gives up on his own dreams (of becoming the pirate king, i assume).

now, is it just that he gave up on his own dreams, or did he make a new dream out of shanks becoming pirate king? that isn't clear… but I think that must be what happened.

(more of the chapter 1082 flashback, a more detailed version of the flashback from 434; they're 15)

because after roger is executed, and shanks tells buggy he's changed his mind about going to laugh tale, buggy's shocked response and rejection feel deeply personal. but he digs up some ancient baggage between them to use as his excuse for leaving, rather than state his true feelings…

which suggests shanks didn't know buggy was so invested in shanks becoming the pirate king.

so. it seems to me. that somehow shanks became aware that buggy's goals had changed. but he did not know why, or what they'd changed to. just that they were now (supposedly) compatible with his own.

at which news I imagine he thought: this is great! now buggy can be part my crew and travel with me while we both go after our goals!

this is just enough of an answer to make me obsessed. i have not been able to stop thinking about 1082 and its implications for weeks.

idk how much of a trend it is nowadays, but back in 2014-2018ish I was always confused about why people decided to give tucker a hostile attitude towards wash prior to s11 when we don't see him having any strong feelings towards him until chorus (though I'm pretty sure they don't actually interact until chorus sans that one scene at the end of s8 but that is besides the point).

like don't get me wrong, I understand conceptually why people give them a rocky relationship, but tucker—and the rest of the bgc—don't treat epsilon and alpha as separate people despite understanding that they're separate people. to them, church is church, so when epsilon looks like church, acts like church, and sounds like church, tucker has no reason to treat him as different from alpha even though they are different. he also didn't spend enough time with epsilon to gauge the nuanced differences between them, so from tucker's perspective wash isn't the reason church was gone—church dies all the time, who cares about him doing it again? s11 hurt so much because epsilon's outburst in s10 made it look like he left because they weren't up to his standards anymore, the bgc weren't good enough to be church's friends anymore.

tucker wasn't good enough to be church's friend anymore, let alone good enough to be his best friend.

they trusted epsilon, they went back for him and carolina when they didn't have to because they couldn't in good conscience abandon them when they needed them, and the two of them returned the favor by abandoning them without so much as a goodbye.

wash didn't though, even when he had multiple opportunities to do so. wash didn't /have/ to stay to pick up the pieces and fill the void church left behind, but he did—and /it hurt/. it hurt that wash was trying so hard and cared so much when it wasn't his place to do so. who /the hell/ did he think he was, trying to fill in for church while simultaneously completely failing at it? why /the hell/ did tucker have to get stuck with him when he all he wanted was his best friend?
