From time to time, Noah catches himself wondering: is it supposed to be this easy—loving someone?

He’s familiar with the way romance is portrayed in movies, how it’s filled with drama—endless fighting, burning passion, bloodshed, life or death stakes, heartbreak, and the grand confession that comes just after the third act, leading into the happily ever after.

The older generations bemoan the younger’s lack of effort, insisting that love requires sacrifice and struggle, and perhaps it does, but maybe compromise isn’t as dirty a word as they make it out to be.

There are days he sits waiting for the other shoe to drop—for a fight to erupt over something he forgot, or for you to grow tired of habits he isn’t even aware of. It’s a feeling he knows all too well.

He has a bad habit of isolating himself, going days without checking in because he’s too hyper focused, not because he doesn’t care. Sometimes, he just needs the nudge, the reminder that you’re there, that you see him.

He braces himself for the fallout, like the quiet before the storm, but you’re not like that. You never have been. He understands now that you’ve always loved him for exactly who, and how, he is.

You love him in all the ways he’s always wanted to be, and he loves you just the same. You make him feel safe, wanted, and most importantly, loved.

I don’t think I could properly, at least to my own internal standards, play out good role play. Like, I want to sit at a bar and have my husband come up like a stranger and “take me home” but I don’t know if I could do it right.

Looking in the mirror, you let out a huff of frustration, defeat, and upset. Every combination of clothing you’ve tried on doesn’t feel right. Most feel too tight, as if they’ve shrunk or you’ve—you shake your head to dispel that thought, knowing it’s a spiral you don’t want to fall into, but you can feel yourself edging closer.

“Are you huffing at me?” Noah asks, passing by the bedroom and peeking in.

“No,” you fiddle with the top you pulled on, trying to make it sit right, pulling it down to cover the top of your jeans, which hug you even tighter than the last time you wore them, making you feel more uneasy. “It’s these dumb clothes,” you drop your arms in defeat and turn to look at him, a pout forming across your lips.

“They don’t look dumb to me.” He shrugs and enters the room, crossing over to the bed and draping himself across it, propping his head up with his hand.

“You would say that, you’re a boy,” you roll your eyes, gazing at the reflection of him in the mirror. “Besides, you practically live in your merch.”

“What’s wrong with that? It’s comfortable.” He pulls on the T-shirt he’s wearing, which features one of their new designs, as if that somehow emphasizes his point.

Sighing, you gaze back at yourself in the mirror, tugging at your clothes once more. If Noah had noticed any change in how your clothes—or you—looked, he didn’t comment on it. His comments were linked to his usual flattery, calling you beautiful, pretty, and making you feel desirable.

Unfortunately, you currently don’t like any of those.

“Hey… talk to me.” Noah calls out, extending his free hand to beckon you. You comply and sink down onto the mattress while he sits up behind you, his fingers gently brushing down your arm, providing a grounding sensation. “What's going on in that pretty head of yours?”

You sigh and fall back against his chest as his arm swoops around you, struggling to find your words. When you finally find the courage to speak, your thoughts come out in a chaotic mess; your insecurities, the way your clothes feel tighter than before, and how you don’t feel pretty or good enough. A verbal barrage of everything you’ve been holding in pours out of you.

Noah remains patient and attentive, holding you close and offering his silent support. His gentle thumb rubs soothing circles on your forearm, providing a grounding presence amidst your turmoil.

When you finally come to a pause, he leans in and gently kisses the side of your head. Hearing the shakiness in your breath, he murmurs, “You’re beautiful. And it’s perfectly okay if you don’t feel it right now.”

You nod, taking a deep breath to steady yourself. Your body remains sunk against him, following the soothing gentle rocking motion he makes. “I have an idea. Why don’t you take a day off from everything? We can stay home together, and I have the perfect outfit for you.” He chuckles, and you can already sense his suggestion. However, there’s such genuine care in his voice that you don’t mind. He’s only trying to lighten the mood, you know that much.

He then adds, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. “And you’ll look absolutely stunning in it, I promise.”

You trust him, and you know to, especially when he stands tall beside you in the new Dethrone hoodie and sweatpants set. The hoodie pools on you in a way which makes you feel comfortable and hidden. You’re not restricted or fighting against anything unflattering; in fact, you look quite cute. Noah’s fingers gently wrap around your loose hair, and he smiles back at you in the mirror. The warmth in his eyes confirms what he had earlier said; he thinks you look stunning.
