I’m curious about the orphans AU 👀

ahhh my beloved orphans au! originally came up with as a possibility for Secret Santa this last December but ultimately decided it would be too big a project to justice at the moment... I do wanna write it but only when I have finished a few ongoing WIPs and can focus on it!

so it's a canon-divergence different first meeting AU. it's gonna build on Cassian's Festian backstory because it's easier and makes more sense for this, and I can just come up with what I want. so basically he's orphaned around six and ends up in an orphanage where Jyn also eventually ends up as well a few years later. I imagined that she and Lyra may have escaped Lah'mu together so Saw was never in the picture, but then Lyra ends up unexpectedly passing away, and that's how Jyn ends up in the orphanage. and of course Jyn is small and a girl so the other older boys try to pick on her and Cassian comes to her defense (oh I also imagined them to be around the same age for this, maybe around 10?) only to be surprised when Jyn like... viciously bites one of the boys and ends up making him cry. so Jyn's immediately in trouble, and by extension Cassian too, but he's very impressed by her and they become fast friends and grow up together. so it's kind of like a slowburn friends to lovers set in the orphanage where they grow up, and then eventually end up in the rebellion.

“You could have left them,” says K. “Or used them as a distraction to escape. I would have let them be captured. It would be easier.” “I,” she says, and then stops, because through the tangle of Bodhi and Leia and Skywalker there’s movement, a shifting. Cassian. The look on his face is a shipwreck, fire and torn metal and wires spitting sparks. He doesn’t say anything. She’s not quite sure he’s even breathing. He’s just watching her, lips parted like he’s seen a ghost, and her knees nearly go out from under her with the relief, that he’s alive and leaning and staring. He’s stolen a uniform, too, one of the sharp black masks of the bodyguards, and it’s closing her throat up, the adrenalin, the déjà vu. She thinks she might say his name, but no sound comes out her mouth. There’s something terrifyingly naked about the way he’s looking at her as he pushes away from the wall, sways on his feet. Alive, she thinks. Alive. It’s a sick kind of rewind, but she doesn’t care. No one’s paying attention. She’s not sure it’d stop her if the whole Imperial fleet was staring, no matter how new it is, no matter what weakness it shows. Jyn slips between them, Bodhi and Leia and Skywalker. She just means to get closer, to talk to him, to prop him up if she can, but when she gets close enough he draws her to him, arm around her ribs, curling up her back, winding her into a grip like a vice, chest to chest. Oh, she thinks, this is what it must have been like for Mama, on Lah'mu,and then her mind goes blank from the warmth. He’s almost shaking, and his fingers are icy on her shoulder, her waist. Her hat’s come off, he’s dragged her so close. Jyn wriggles her good arm out of the tangle, works it around him, presses hard enough to bruise. Open wounds and bleeding vulnerabilities. She’s on her toes and leaning into him and Cassian fists his hand in her stolen uniform and drags in air like he hasn’t breathed in years. And this—this is what she’s wanted. This is what she’s wanted since she woke up in sickbay to find him watching her. This is the one thing she's wanted from him that she's never once wanted from anybody else, not like this, not closeness and warmth like this. His hair’s sour with sweat and smoke and blood, and the collar of the uniform smells like someone else, but the rest of it is Cassian. You’re all right. It crawls into her mouth. You’re all right, you’re all right. Jyn shuts her eyes, tries not to let them burn. You’re all right. “You’re okay?” says Cassian, very soft, right into her ear, and she’s nodding even though it’s a lie. He has to know it’s a lie. Still, his head slips, and suddenly there’s his hand against the nape of her neck, his nose at her throat. He doesn’t say it again, not aloud, but she can feel it against her collar, lips and nose and the brush of his beard. Mouthing it. You’re okay. His hair tickles at her mouth.

She wakes up shaking all over, gasping for breath. It isn't the first time she's seen him dead in her nightmares; she's seen him vaporized on Scarif, too late to be saved, she's seen him flatline on the operating table, seen him succumb to a blaster wound too deep for bacta to fix, seen his lifeless body in an Imperial cell with the pouch on his jacket that normally holds two lullaby pills torn open, with just one on the floor.

Jyn has seen him dead hundreds of times behind her eyes, in hundreds of ways.

And one time, she knows, she has to know, if she isn't completely fucking kidding herself, it's going to be real.

It's with a struggle that she manages to sit up in the bunk, burying her face in shaking hands, willing herself to get it together, because this is pathetic. At least the stinging in her eyes hasn't become anything else, she can give herself that, but otherwise? Truly fucking pathetic. She would've never survived if she'd gone to pieces like this alone in the bunker after being left behind, in the cave on Lah'mu…..

There's breath, warm, at the back of her neck that makes her own come just a little easier. A press of lips there as soft as the hand that grazes down her arm and laces fingers with her own, that finally makes her stop shaking. She lifts her head, then, and turns to meet Cassian's eyes in the dark.

She wonders if he has dreams like that, too. He has to, doesn't he? Neither of them ever say anything about it, but from the way he looks at her sometimes in the middle of the night cycle like this when sleep eludes them both, the way that the lines crease in and the way that the circles shadow under his eyes in a mirror to her own, tells her everything.

It's been an age since either of them have truly had something to lose.

There aren't any words she could possibly begin to even form, so she lets the caress of her free hand against his face start the conversation, lets the kiss she presses to his mouth continue it.

He's warm and steady; if she doesn't fight it, it could seep in, wash away her fear like the last remnants of something left on a shore for the tides. She parts her lips under his and pulls him over top of her as she sinks back down onto the mattress, which creaks under their weight; it's good. His hands get to work, finding the most sensitive spots on her skin and leaving heat in their wake; it's good. They only part long enough to pull shirts over heads and recklessly discard the rest of what's left between them, press together until they could practically fuse into one being; it's good.

But it's not enough.

Jyn arches up her hips with purpose, says, on the rough edge of a precipice, "I want you to come inside me this time."

And so he does, burying himself in so deep that she forgets everything else.

(Cassian knows how to follow an order when it counts.)

I think a mix of both-- on one hand, water is change and freedom and has been on the backdrop of each of their stories in one way or another (Kenari, Lah'mu, Morlana, Narkina, Niamos, Eadu, Scarif,) but on the other hand uh... swimming fun.

Rogue One, the first of the theatrical A Star Wars Story films, was released on December 16, 2016. The story took place and lead directly into Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. The movie explained how the rebels got the plans to the Death Star and why there was such a major flaw in the design. What are the odds of Jyn and Cassian being exactly where they needed to be to land on Scarif that day and transmit the Death Star plans just in time?

It has to be something like one in a million, maybe less. It's something I could only describe as their fate.

For Jyn, she grows up along the creation of the Death Star. The very thing Galen is researching before she is even born will mean her death. As she plays quietly, Galen is in the very next room figuring formulas that will mean her death.

For Cassian, he has a direct role in building the Death Star. On Narkina-5, he, Melshi, and thousands of others are a piece of the puzzle that will kill him and so many others. He is building his death and will never know it.

And yet, the timing still falls just-so for the Scarif mission to succeed.

Galen realizes what his work is building, chooses Lyra and Jyn, and goes into hiding on Lah'mu. This delays the Death Star.

Cassian inspires Kino to lead the escape from Narkina-5, shutting down the prison in the process. This delays the Death Star.

Even more importantly, these delays allow Cassian and Jyn to become the people they must be for that day on Scarif to succeed.

So many things had to happen just perfectly for Scarif to happen. What if Cassian arrived ten minutes later to the brothel in the search for his sister, and the cops were gone? What if Galen and Lyra left Coruscant for Lah'mu ten minutes too late?

It's millions of choices.

Choices that don't even concern Jyn and Cassian too.

Choices coming from Bodhi, Chirrut, and Baze among others.

For narrative purposes, of course they're in the right place at the right time. No story can exist without particular timing.

But to look at Rogue One, it's just fascinating to think how particular that timing is.

Or, maybe... None of that even matters.

What does ten minutes mean to fate?

Possibly nothing.

jyn's relationship with hope as a concept is a very complicated one, beginning the day her mother died on lah'mu. my url stems from this quote : "my mother gave me her knife, / she has taught me that hope is vicious." while the empire raiding lah'mu was traumatic, it was something that the er.so's had been planning on. jyn frequently did practice raids and knew the route to the cave by heart. however, the plan was always for lyra to go with her no matter what. but at the pivotal moment, lyra instead gave jyn her kyber crystal and ran to galen, choosing her husband over her eight year old daughter who still needed her. any hope that they could still have a normal life or that jyn could have a normal childhood died that day, a realization that lyra directly contributed to. it's foolish to hope for a different life because it'll never happen. it's pointless to hope that someone will love her enough to stick around because her own mother chose someone else over her.

as a partisan, she put herself through the paces and trained as hard as she could to see the goal of stopping the empire through instead of just hoping it would happen. while she recognized the importance of hope as a morale booster to the troops, she never put much stock in it. more often than not, it seemed like a hopeless fight, especially since the empire had so much more firepower and resources than the partisans. and when saw abandoned her on tamsye prime, she lost hope for the future in general, just doing her best to survive. what's the point in hoping for a better life when she's just scraping by ever day ?

this is her mindset going into r1. when jyn says "hope?" on jedha, it's clear that she's mocking the concept –– her expression is jeering and her gaze full of disbelief. when cassian tells her that "rebellions are built on hope," it's ultimately something she rolls her eyes at, especially since she doesn't believe that cassian truly believes in that phrase anyway. but something she's always recognized is the importance of hope to keep troops fighting –– it's why she regurgitates cassian's words in her speech to the council, despite having very little belief in this hope herself.

but me saying "very little belief" in that past sentence is important here. she goes from having no hope whatsoever in wobani to having a crumb of it after hearing galen's message and realizing that it may be possible to stop the dea.th star. that's all she needed. while her mother's abandonment on lah'mu taught her that hoping was a painful, vicious thing that only led to disappointment, she eventually starts to feel sparks of hope herself after years of shutting that side of herself off.

that being said, jyn's hope during the original trilogy is much different than someone like luke's ( who's more of a sunshine-y, optimistic, hopeful character ). rather, as my url suggests, her hope is more vicious, more angry and resentful. it's not the "i have hope that the rebellion will beat the empire!" but rather a "i have hope that i'll tear that empire down with my bare hands, bleeding and broken, and no one's going to stop me."
