Here are ratings of all the books I read in April:
The Very Nice Box – Laura Blackett & Eve Gleichman
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had a hard time rating this because this book was very slow, but I surprisingly enjoyed it! I think there was supposed to be a deeper meaning behind everything, but the overall story was easy to follow and fun to read. This is a good palette cleanser after a few intense books!
The…
My year of reading! I did this last year and it was a cool way to organize and revisit the books I'd read, so I thought I'd do it again this year.
What's nice about doing this is that I get a practical layout of everything. When I was thinking about what I read this year I had a kind of meh feeling about it, but putting this together helped me remember that there were actually a lot of books I absolutely loved.
There are books on this list I read because a friend recommended it, or that I loved and got other people to read so I could talk about it. So that, even while reading is a solitary pursuit, it's still very much a group activity in other ways.
And while not everything on here was a total winner for me, seeing this helped me realize it was better than thought.
The Very Nice Box, Eve Gleichman, Laura Blackett; Sea of Tranquility, Emily St. John Mandel; Siren Queen, Nghi Vo; Babel, R. F. Kuang; This Is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar, Max Gladstone; How Far the Light Reaches, Sabrina Imbler; The Seep, Chana Porter; The Book Eaters; Sunyi Dean, A Day of Fallen Night, Samantha Shannon; In the Lives of Puppets, By: TJ Klune; The Mimicking of Known Successes, Malka Older; The Sisters of the Winter Wood, Rena Rossner; The Wager; David Grann; Unconquerable Sun, Kate Elliott; Translation State, Ann Leckie; Ancillary Justice, Ann Leckie; Ancillary Sword, Ann Leckie; Ancillary Mercy, Ann Leckie; The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, KJ Charles; The Raven Tower, Ann Leckie; House With Good Bones, T Kingfisher; The Hollow Places, T Kingfisher; Camp Damascus, Chuck Tingle; The Red Scholar's Wake, Aliette de Bodard; Legends & Lattes, Travis Baldree; The Twisted Ones, T. Kingfisher; A Haunting on the Hill, Elizabeth Hand; Into the Drowning Deep, Mira Grant; Fugitive Telemetry, Martha Wells; System Collapse, Martha Wells; A Power Unbound, Freya Marske; I Keep My Exoskeletons To Myself, Marisa Crane; The Empress of Salt and Fortune, Nghi Vo; When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain, Nghi Vo; Into the Riverlands, Nghi Vo; Mammoths at the Gates, Nghi Vo
And here are the ones I didn't finish:
Some Desperate Glory, Emily Tesh; Chasing Shadows, Greg Skomal; Witch King, Martha Wells; The Forever Sea, Joshua Phillip Johnson; This Time Tomorrow, Emma Straub
I felt like I'd given up on a lot more books this year, but it wasn't actually any more than last year. I think I might have been more disappointment by the ones on this list. Like, I love Emily Tesh's novellas and this novel just didn't work for me at all. And The Forever Sea was such a slog and so many people had to hear about how much I wasn't enjoying it before I finally gave up with just like, 15% of the book left. And like, honestly, if you're going to put a shark on the cover of your book, your book should primarily be about sharks and less about academia.
At the beginning of The Very Nice Box, by Eve Gleichman and Laura Blackett, Ava, feels a bit like The Cactus or Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. She’s a successful product designer at STÄDA, who divides her existence into 30-minute units and never deviates from her routine. Her life seems sad and limited, but at least she’s at work on her passion project, the Very Nice Box, which is, uh, a…

Authors in Conversation: The Very Nice Box Coauthors Laura Blackett and Eve Gleichman
It’s always a delight to have new authors on the site, and today we’ve got two! Laura Blackett and Eve Gleichman are the coauthors behind The Very Nice Box, which released just yesterday from HMH! Here’s a little more info about the book:
Ava Simon designs storage boxes for STÄDA, a slick Brooklyn-based furniture company. She’s hard-working, obsessive, and heartbroken from a tragedy that killed…
The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History - Elizabeth Kolbert
Super Natural Simple: Whole Food, Vegetarian Recipes for Real Life - Heidi Swanson [maybe a little too simple (but the pancakes were delicious); I think Super Natural Every Day is her best book overall, although Near and Far has some fantastic beans, and my favorite celery salad is from Super Natural Cooking]
The Hellion’s Waltz - Olivia Waite [the Royal Patent Chiroplast, I regret to say, is not made up]
The Empress of Salt and Fortune - Nghi Vo
Make, Thrift, Mend: Stitch, Patch, Darn, Plant-Dye & Love Your Wardrobe - Katrina Rodabaugh [it’s fair to ask why I read this when her first book irritated me so, but in fact I think this one does a better job of acknowledging that what she’s describing is primarily an art practice, while also providing more usable advice]
Emily Climbs - L. M. Montgomery [this is probably my favorite of the trilogy, because Dean is mostly not in it]
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb - Cat Sebastian
Black Water Sister - Zen Cho
Tommy Cabot Was Here - Cat Sebastian
Turning Pointe: How a New Generation of Dancers Is Saving Ballet from Itself - Chloe Angyal [I have, in nearly every way, a Bad Ballet Body - too big, too busty, too inflexible, lacking in grace and according to my teacher even possessed of displeasing elbow joints - which I kept trying to dance with even though I knew very well that I was terrible and always would be, so reading this was both cathartic and possibly a little bit dangerous to my equilibrium. (One of the strange upsides to spending a year recovering from a (not dance-related) broken leg: awful, but at least it gave me the out I needed to never go back on pointe without ever actually having to admit to anyone that my feet couldn’t do it)]
A Fashionable Indulgence - KJ Charles [rounding out last month’s set! I either don’t understand Harry at all or I understand him too well, and I’m never sure which, but either way I do like him.]
Peaces - Helen Oyeyemi [extremely bizarre - it’s Oyeyemi, of course it’s extremely bizarre - but also the only one of her books I’ve ever finished, even though I saw her read during the tour for Mr. Fox and it was great! Strong contenders for the award for Best Mongoose in a Supporting Role.]
Emily’s Quest - L. M. Montgomery
The Very Nice Box - Eve Gleichman and Laura Blackett [Part One is lackluster, though good for the horrible party game of deciding which of your coworkers would buy in to which dreadful office morale activity; Part Two slaps]
The Witness for the Dead - Katherine Addison [if it’s been a while, and if you, like me, remember the emotions of books rather than the plots or the settings or the names, may I strongly suggest rereading at least the appendices to The Goblin Emperor first?]
The Hidden Palace - Helene Wecker
Malafrena - Ursula K. Le Guin
The Secret to Superhuman Strength - Alison Bechdel
Haikyuu!! Volumes 1-45 - Haruichi Furudate [I refuse to list all of these separately; just assume it was one volume every two to three days, except for a couple of times that I got particularly excited, and then it was more like...four a day (Tsukishima forever.)]
Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead - Emily Austin
With P.E.I. election a week away, many Islanders say they want government to 'work with us'
With the provincial election just a week away, many residents of Prince Edward Island are calling on the next government to work with them -- not against them.
As the rain poured down on an island potato farm, it was a stark reminder of what it was like last October at the height of the harvest.
“It was almost a biblical year,” said farmer Bryan Maynard. “Nobody had seen it before. Almost 7,000 acres were left in the ground.”
Maynard, well-known for Farm Boys Inc., says he doesn't believe people quite understand how detrimental last year was -- and will be -- on some farmers.
“People are going to have that hangover from the 2018 crop for quite some time, and I would hope that whatever government is formed here realizes that it's time to start working towards fixing that hangover,” Maynard said.
The ruling Liberal party's slogan this campaign is “P.E.I is working.”
It’s a nod to the relatively strong economic times on the island, according to political scientist Don Desserud of the University of Prince Edward Island.
“They've not done a bad job in terms of managing the economy,” Desserud said. “The economy is doing very well.”
But not everyone agrees it's working. Maynard says there's some mistrust of government no matter the political stripe.
His wish for whoever forms the next government?
“I would really like to work hand in hand, side by side with them,” Maynard said. “Sometimes, as farmers here on the island, we feel like the government's over-regulating things and maybe dictating to us how they would like us to farm.”
Terry Curley, is the co-owner Monaghan Farms Ltd., in Summerfield.
“I think there's a lot of good things that the agriculture community's doing,” Curley said. “Whether it be environment or pesticide reduction, all that. It's hard to get that message out.”
Curley is a sixth-generation farmer who is hoping the next government considers that and listens to the facts.
“Base your decisions on science, don't base it on political plus or minus decisions,” Curley said. “I think that's the biggest thing that a lot of people are frustrated with.”
Along the island's north shore, at the French River South wharf, you'll find lobster fisherman Lucas Blackett. His season starts in two weeks.
He's not even 25 yet, but this will be his seventh season as a license holder.
He says so long as he can fish, life is pretty good, but he says, things need to be done to strengthen the industry's future.
“There's a pile of harbours around here that need a lot of work, like our wharf, prime example,” Blackett said. “Right outside this door is just, well it’s falling apart -- and this isn't the only one. There's a lot; there needs to be some serious money put into infrastructure for sure.”
Maynard sums up his wish for the next premier.
“I’m just really hopeful that whoever takes office is willing to work together with us as Islanders, not just farmers, but Islanders in general,” he said.
That’s because the work itself on land or sea continues no matter who is in power.

Overall, I had a wonderful reading year. I reached my ambiguous reading goal of thirty books (although next year, I’d like to disregard the reading challenge entirely). Discovered new favorites, re-discovered my love for memoir writing and personal essays, explored more of my favorite authors’ works (Baldwin and Ishiguro, to name a few). Next year, I want to hone in more on autobiographical fiction and garner inspiration for my own personal writing. I would also like to read more escapism fiction, particularly fantasy; I forget how wonderful reading for pleasure can be. I want to visit my public library even more. Most importantly, I want reading to never feel like a burden. My love for it has never felt more organic, and I would like to keep it that way.
Looking forward to another year measured by books.
