Part 15
Khan
~ August to September 2019 ~
It took him three days to get all the information he needed. If Khan had known how easy it was to break out, he would have done so before.
The key to his freedom was a man called Thomas Harewood.
His contact outside had given him all the information he needed about the man working for the prison’s doctor. He was desperate to find help for his little daughter who was really sick and needed a lifesaving surgery.
One day later he had bribed the man. It was way too easy. Offer a desperate father a lot of money and he will do anything you ask for.
Harewood helped him fake his death with a globefish’s poison. Not too many people knew that a body could appear dead with the right amount of it. But one had to be careful so that it wouldn’t actually kill them.
Two days later everything was handled. He woke up in the back of a car. Harewood let him out in the middle of nowhere, giving him a new phone. Khan told him that he’d get the rest of the money as soon as possible.
And just like that he was a free man again.
He met up with one of his old partners, who drove him to the closest city. He got a new passport, some cash. To make sure that no one in San Francisco would recognize him, he had to change his hair and eyes.
Now, yet another day later, ‘Jacob Hemmingway’ was driving his new car through the familiar streets of San Francisco.
Blond curly hair, green eyes, pair of glasses, handsome clothes. No one would know that this was the man imprisoned for counterfeit drugs, abuse, grievous bodily harm.
The first place he visited was the house of that bastard of a doctor. He wasn’t there. At least his car was gone. However, there was someone else leaving the house.
A woman.
She kinda looked familiar even though Khan didn’t know her. Well… he’d find out who she was.
He followed her all the way to a bakery. Maybe she was helping with the organization of that wedding.
Khan got out of the car and stepped into the shop. He looked around, without attracting too many eyes and eavesdropped the conversation the woman had with the baker.
“So, I’d like to have a three layered cake for 24th of September. I know it’s a bit short-dated but I only now found the time. And I called in the morning and your co-worker told me that it is possible.”
“Oh, so you must be Miss McCoy, right?”
McCoy. Interesting. A cousin? No… more likely a sister. That explained the familiarity.
“Yes, I am. So… I wanted a mixture of red velvet and blueberry.”
The baker nodded.
“Right, right. How about I show you some examples?”
“That would be great.”
From the corner of his eyes, Khan saw the two women walk over to a small room.
Leonard McCoy’s sister. The baker had called her Miss, indicating she wasn’t married.
‘What are the chances?’
Part 16
Leah
After Leonard left for work Leah got herself ready for the day. She needed something to do with herself to distract her mind from all she had learned from her brother-in-law to be. Her hand curled in a fist at her side at the thought of what Scotty had been through.
“The cake,” she said aloud to herself.
Didn’t these two know anything about weddings? They had set a date so close, and expected things to work out. Well of course things were going to work out now that she was here to keep them on a schedule. At least Leo had had the foresight to get his suit done early.
Leah walked to her brother’s desk and found the small pile of wedding notes he’d set there. Leo had told her Jim had recommended a bakery for the cake. Someone he used to date worked there or something. Leah found the number and dialed.
“Keeler’s, how can I help you?” a feminine voice answered.
“Hi,” Leah said, “I know it’s a bit short notice, but I’m looking to have a cake made for my brother’s wedding.”
“How soon is the date?”
“September 24th.”
“Let me see…,” Leah heard papers rustling in the background.
“I’m not looking for something huge,” Leah added. “Maybe three layers? It’s going to be a relatively small wedding.”
“Ok… I think we can manage that. Would you like to come down to discuss it? Ms. Keeler will be in shortly.”
“Sure, I can be there soon.” Leah smiled to herself. This was going to be a piece of cake.
“Ok, I’ll just mark down you’re coming Miss…” the voice paused expectantly.
“Leah McCoy.”
“Ok Miss McCoy we’ll see you soon.”
Leah was satisfied leaving the bakery. She and Ms. Keeler had seen eye to eye on exactly what she wanted for Leo and Scotty. She smiled as she walked down the sidewalk. The heavy fog that had blown in was beginning to lift, but it had still left a chill in the air. She saw a shop ahead and decided something warm to drink would be quite welcome. She could plan her next move with a cup of something.
The shop was quite busy but Leah found an empty table to sit with her coffee. She was flipping through her phone when a voice surprised her. She looked up.
“May I sit?” a man was asking.
She glanced around. The shop was still full.
“Go ahead,” she shrugged.
“Thank you so much. I didn’t expect it to be so busy this morning,” the man said.
Leah glanced up. The man was looking at her with a friendly smile. His green eyes were bright behind his glasses and his blond curls flopped on his forehead. He appeared around her age.
“Everyone probably wanted to warm up,” she said smiling back.
“Oh,” the man said. “You aren’t from around here?”
Leah laughed. Leo held his drawl back as much as he could, but hers was always there.
“No, I’m here visiting my brother.”
The man looked around, as if looking for her brother.
“He’s at work,” she said.
“All by yourself?” the man asked curiously. Leah heard faint concern as well.
“I can take care of myself,” she grinned.
“Oh I’m sure you can,” he agreed with another smile.
Leah saw a twinkle in his eye. Had all the tables really been taken or had he come over here on purpose?
“Leah McCoy,” she said sticking out her hand.
“Jacob Hemmingway,” he responded, taking her hand.
Well, maybe this was the distraction she had been looking for.

Hello, Megstiel peeps! Just a quick announcement.
The sing-ups for this Big Bang are supposed to close tomorrow, on July 5th, but we’ve decided to extend them, mostly because we still don’t have enough artists.
(And also because the mod is going to have a busy weekend and no time to close the sing-up pages).
So authors have time to sign up until July 8th and can do so here.
Artists, which, again, we desperately need, have time to sign up until July 15th and can do so here.
If you want to be reminded of the rules and schedule, you can find them here.
It would also help us immensely if you would reblog this post and let your Megstiel loving artist friends about the event.
That is all. As always, if you have any questions or doubts, you can write us here or to our email
[email protected].
Thank you!

Analysis: Academia's troubling trend: White people passing as people of color
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/analysis-academias-troubling-trend-white-people-passing-as-people-of-color/
Analysis: Academia's troubling trend: White people passing as people of color
But the consequences of such trickery are complex — and thus can be more unsettling than the simple shock value suggests.
The school announced on Thursday that the faculty member has resigned.
In September, the country learned about CV Vitolo-Haddad, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who resigned from a teaching position after admitting on social media that they falsely claimed to be a person of color.
Just the week before, there was the revelation about Jessica Krug, a former professor at the George Washington University who posed as Black throughout her professional career.
In August, Twitter suspended the account of BethAnn McLaughlin, a former professor at Vanderbilt University who, among other things, fabricated an account on which she took on the identity of a Native American woman.
And of course, any mention of racial deception recalls the head-spinning journey of Rachel Dolezal, the activist and former Eastern Washington University professor who in 2015 was revealed to be cosplaying as a Black person.
But the above stories’ structural uniformity obscures how the injury caused by racial fraud varies.
In some instances, there’s the unique cruelty of trafficking in corrosive, timeworn stereotypes of people of color.
For example, the former University of New Hampshire professor conjured up the image of non-White immigrants as antediluvian, as archly conservative — as resistant to the noble ambition of bolstering equality.
Krug’s deceit was both knottier and not. On the one hand, she sought refuge in the US’ general benightedness regarding race and ethnicity.
“The places Krug chose to identify with — North Africa, the West Indies, East Harlem, the Bronx — cannily preyed upon a certain American laziness when it comes to parsing race beyond Jim Crow,” the Northwestern University professor Lauren Michele Jackson wrote in September.
On the other hand, Krug’s performance of her bogus identity was often one-dimensional. At one point, she claimed to be “an unrepentant and unreformed child of the hood.”
The description was striking both in the flat manner it chose to “legitimize” Blackness, and in the queasy suggestion that being from the hood is something to correct, as my Appradab colleague Leah Asmelash and I discussed last year.
In other instances, racial fraud inflicts damage that’s much, much more personal. Ask students — or, really, anyone who made themselves vulnerable to anyone among the daisy chain of names above.
“The TAA (the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s labor union for graduate employees) enabled this harm by electing (Vitolo-Haddad) to a position of power in our union: We have unknowingly rewarded the toxic opportunism of performing Blackness. We intend to immediately begin the work of repairing this harm,” the group said in a statement.
“From the moment she came into the classroom, I was in awe of her,” Anmol Goraya, who took a class with Krug in 2019, told Appradab in September. “And I’m just shocked that it was such a complete lie.”
“It was the last thing on my mind to think she was lying. I would think I had the details confused,” Goraya added.
Or here’s Jacqueline Keeler, the editor of the Native-led magazine Pollen Nation, speaking in the aftermath of the McLaughlin scandal: “These people are centering themselves in our issues, they are heading Native American departments, they are telling Native students what they can and can’t study — it’s to protect their own position,” Keeler said. “And so it does change our ability to advocate for ourselves when we are constantly being replaced by frauds, White people or other people of different backgrounds pretending to be us.”
And this is to say nothing of how racial deception at times reanimates the notion that it’s somehow easier to be an academic of color — a belief that might explain why the issue appears to be prevalent in the academy.
Vitolo-Haddad told Inside Higher Ed that they benefited “socially” from misrepresenting themselves.
Of course, this thinking downplays the fact that academics of color often have to champion themselves in a majority-White environment that undercuts them — that views them as unworthy, their ideas as intellectually frail.
As the news of another academic who was pretending to be a person of color unfolds, it’s important to keep in mind that the consequences of this sort of racial deceit are more intricate than the initial narrative lets on.

Part 19
Scotty
Scotty really admired his love’s protectiveness, but he was also on Leah’s side in this debate. She was the older sister after all. And it wasn’t like she hadn’t had any dates while Leonard was gone.
However, he wouldn’t take any sides openly. He didn’t want to hurt his fiancé by saying the facts out loud. So he kept quiet.
The agreement the McCoy siblings had made brought back the peace. Still, they sat in silence for a moment. The last night was still on their minds.
Scotty really wanted to talk to Leonard. About what he had seen. About how he had died this time. But he was scared that the nightmare would be reoccurring then. He didn’t want to stress out his loved ones even more.
They eventually chatted about all kind of things. Their day at work, the cake Leah had chosen, Christine wanting to go shopping with her.
Even though he laughed at jokes Leah made, Scotty felt just so exhausted.
“I’m sorry. Is it alright if I go to sleep already?” The engineer asked, food half finished.
Leah and Leonard looked at him in surprise.
“I… I will do the dishes tomorrow,” he instantly said, knowing that he should do it today, but McCoy’s sister placed a hand on his shoulder, shaking her head.
“Hey, hey, it’s fine. Don’t worry about this stuff. Just… get some rest.”
“Leah’s right leannan. Just sleep. I’ll join you in a moment.”
Scotty nodded as he got up. He thanked them and said his goodnight, then left for the bathroom.
When he lay in bed ten minutes later, the Scotsman couldn’t stop the tears streaming down his face.
Images of last night kept on appearing in front of his eyes. The blood, Leonard’s empty eyes, his lifeless body.
He twisted and turned but he couldn’t find any rest.
Part 20
McCoy
The silence after his statement that Leah tell them where the date would be was heavy. He picked up the dish Leah had taken from the oven and carried it to the table.
“Thank you for taking care of the cake,” he finally said after they had each dished up.
He looked across at his sister. She was staring back.
“You’re welcome,” she replied.
There, an apology. Leah smiled at him.
“Where’d you order it?” Scotty asked.
“That place Leo wrote down. Keeler’s. How did Jim know her?” Leah asked.
“He dated her for a bit,” McCoy said.
Dinner progressed and so did the conversation until Scotty announced he was heading to bed. McCoy looked at him closely, as he told him he’d join him soon. Weariness hung around Scotty’s shoulders.
“You know you don’t have to get up when we do,” McCoy said to his sister as they finished eating.
“I know. It’s mostly just habit. And the time difference.”
McCoy nodded.
“You wanna start the sink and I’ll get these leftovers taken care of?”
“Sure,” said Leah.
“So,” McCoy started slowly when he joined Leah at the sink, “this guy you met, what’s he like?”
“Leo—” Leah’s voice was annoyed.
“I’m just curious,” he defended himself. “You’re right, you’re an adult. I’m sorry.”
Silence fell between them.
“His name is Jacob.”
“Oh.”
“We got chatting over coffee. We kind of hit it off and it’s not like it’s going to turn into anything.” Leah handed her brother another pan. “It’s just dinner. He knows I’m only in town for a bit. And he is too honestly.”
“What does Jacob do?”
“Car delivery. He’s from New York.”
McCoy still wasn’t quite pleased about his sister’s date, but he couldn’t pinpoint why it bothered him. He wanted to know more about this Jacob, but if he pressed it would just lead to another argument and Leah would probably say he was trying to act like their father. So he left it. Leah was free to do what she wanted and be herself. But something was still hanging over him and it frustrated him that it was. He let out a huff before he entered the bedroom.
He was quiet as he moved across to the bathroom. If Scotty had already fallen asleep he didn’t want to wake him. And if Scotty was still awake, well, he’d know in a few minutes. With his teeth brushed and clothes dropped in the hamper, he left the bathroom.
He heard the rustle of the sheets and Scotty moving.
“Still awake?” he asked quietly.
“Aye.”
McCoy pulled back the covers on his side and slid in next to Scotty. He gathered the engineer in his arms and held him close. He felt the dampness on Scotty’s face as he kissed his cheek. He squeezed his love tighter for a moment letting him know he was there for him.
“Love you,” McCoy whispered.
