While Lilja's being brought back into training, I'm taking lessons with Fjara to teach her to use those damn hind muscles to not trip and fall constantly. My dad's fallen off her three times due to tripping and he's not quite capable of helping Fjara get that posture back in the right place.

So here I am, risking my life (don't know her quite well enough under the saddle and I am not a courageous person)and limbs (I've got about 6 bruises on my legs now due to Fjara casually scraping past trees with my leg) to get miss ma'am back into proper shape and see if my dad gets the courage to ride her a bit again.

We've been working on leadership with groundwork, we're working on fixing that very lateral tölt (she's making quite a lot of progress already!), asking her for trot (did short bursts of trot today) and canter because last time I got one jump and she went straight into something resembling pace. Today I got:

a buck when I gave her the cue for canter

more pace

then three strides of canter before a very lateral tölt

a decent tölt, followed by a sort of scramble only a five gaited horse can manage

and then all of a sudden things clicked, Fjara went 'oh!', I learned what going very fast really means, and we cantered properly.

It's so funny, this horse is so fast in (re)developing her skills. With Lilja it's never gone this smooth, and it kind of makes me realise what a huge difference between training these two horses have had.

Also, extremely different personalities.

#*myhorses #Fjara frá Skjálg #Lilja just deadass doesn't do things sometimes just because #it's not a can't. it's not a 'I don't know this' or a 'I'm afraid to do this'#it genuinely is a don't wanna which is kinda bonkers #which I think stems from when she got trained she was just...overloaded with information and new skills #and while she had at least 3 months off after she came home to let it all settle #I dunno. something just. didn't settle.#with her it's often a real discussion to get her to do something as simple as taking a few steps backwards #with Fjara I don't have those discussions and we can get through new things so much faster #might also be a skill thing bc I've learned a lot since starting a very green Lilja but uhhh #amazing how different horses can be #don't get me wrong though #I love Lilja for her courage and adventurousness and how relaxed she is #to a point where I have to keep a real good eye on her to know how much she can actually handle #I'm excited to start her back up again as well!#the short ride last week relaxed me in ways I haven't been for monthssss

love watching weather science videos but like. why am i 1000x more interested in tornadoes over hurricanes. they're both spinning air

#we wanted to be a stormchaser when we were younger #nowadays we have to worry about our health too much to have such a risky high-stress high reaction time job #been watching nothing but tornado history videos for days it's one of our intermittent special interests #stemming from the weather science workbook we OBSESSED over as a kid #would read that thing cover to cover multiple times a week. i was the kind of autistic who would read the Encyclopedia for fun #i actually had a fave encyclopedia entry as a kid and now i cannot fucking remember it 😭#i also learned what sex was through the encyclopedia 😭😭😭😭 was legit my first exposure to the concept #but like even though we watch A TON of weather videos including tons of stuff about thunderstorms and blizzards #(thunderstorms my fucking beloved. favourite weather pattern ever. cumulonimbus my bestest friend <3)#most of the videos we watch are mostly tornado videos. and hurricane videos feel boring to us #even though hurricanes are wayyy more powerful #tornadoes are still fucking powerful it's just more. concentrated #tornadoes to me feel Targeted like. that's weather that says Fuck YOU in particular actually #especially multivortex tornadoes where you can literally have two houses both in the middle of the storm at once #and still only one of them gets destroyed #or like pictures you can see of demolished houses with their mailbox in the yard simply untouched #i like to watch tornado videos bc they help me. prepare. just in case #our state gets hit with tornadoes pretty frequently though not as much as tornado alley #and i like to know all the information for sheltering and what to do in the event of a collapsed building and such #i have a little survival kit in the bathroom just in case with like basic first aid and a radio and bottled water #bc thats probably the safest room for me to be in since it's not near any external walls and also hiding in the tub is usually good #also in the event you're caught on the road during a tornado #DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE shelter under a bridge or overpass #those work basically like straws where as the air gets pushed through it goes MUCH faster and gets dangerous way easier #as far as im aware the best place to be is in a ditch or hole if you absolutely cannot find a shelter in time #if you do not have a car with roll protection then being in your car will probably be worse #NOT AN EXPERT THO pls verify this information on your own if you think it is relevant or necessary i have poor memory and can be stupid #i just know that overpasses are dangerous as hell

Spinel is such an unsettling character to me because I don't really understand him..

#stress inducing character. agate is second most stressful character to me. both of them are so difficult to /get/#i need to understand characters and it's not really easy with both of them. which is probably intentional too #realizing that we almost reached ep 100 and that spinel has been around since ep 6 and that he still remains mysterious. unsettling moment #gibeon was so easy to understand in comparison. i didn't struggle with him the way i do with spinel #kinda interesting on a meta level too. gibeon's anguish and suffering stemmed from the fact that he felt his ideals couldn't be understood-#and from miscommunication. and the writing around him was so careful and delicate.#done in a way that allowed us to understand his perspective and feelings. it's really neat how you could put the pieces together-#and see exactly where his arc was heading as early as ep 45. so satisfying #the character whose existence screamed “i want to be understood so badly” got just that through his writing and buildup. big love.#spinel probably doesn't want to be understood(? assumption) and it shows through the constant intrigue around his character..#literally an enigma to everyone. characters in-universe and viewers included. what is his deal.#i think i get some elements and themes around him and in relation to other characters which inform us a bit about his position in hz but #it's not enough ww i need to understand more #thinking a lot about how the series emphasizes communication and understanding and it was the point of the confrontation with gibeon #spinel represents a bit some of these ideas but upped to eleven.. stubborn in the way he won't reveal himself-#or what's in his heart compared to gibeon. really makes me wonder if it'll just keep going on like that #if he is fine not being understood forever. esp since he is paving his way to his own ruin rn but idk if he sees it : ( he makes me sad tbh #i feel like there is something big missing about him for me to make his character click and to get closer to an understanding of him #we seriously need more of his backstory in some way. even if the characters in-universe don't learn it. i need to know about it as a viewer #it can't end like this. or else. idk.#hopefully script coordinator kureha matsuzawa is cooking something for spinel. you know you wanna write more about the ikemen shachou ohh #it'll haunt me. if i don't get to know what led him to this point or how he was prior to being picked by gibeon #character notes #spinel

found out I got a 95 on my linear algebra exam today, genuinely thought I was gonna get around a 70 and an 80 if I was lucky 🧍‍♂️ I fr BSed my way through the entire thing (started doing the notes for the entire unit the morning of the exam bc I’m insane and I want to see if my body can take it (Markiplier reference) anyway never doing that again 💀 (I in fact, probably will be doing that again))

#life update #linear algebra #why is that a tag #I’m in a toxic relationship with math #linear algebra is one of those classes that makes me feel like im too dumb to be a stem major #physics too when I took it in high school I only got a 2 on my AP exam #granted my teacher did flipped classroom and that teaching style so did not work for me I’m a hands on girly #i literally only learn through fuck around and find out aka doing it wrong in every way possible until I get it right #anyway I managed to get an A in modern mechanics freshmen year of college which is a miracle imo #bc physics is hard and at that time I was still classified as a BFA major so none of the study sessions and tutoring stuff fit my schedule #bc studio and stuff #anyway cry lore drop

i really and truly believe that there are only two genuine human superpowers, both of which can be actively cultivated:

the ability to find anything interesting, ie the ability to reframe and reflect on any situation or encounter, even/especially negative or boring ones, so as to make what is happening to you interesting, engaging, and personally meaningful to your human experience. this habit of mind is mostly curiosity but it's also woven through with psychological flexibility, especially the ability to regulate your own emotional reactions so that you can respond to challenging or tedious situations in more thoughtful and values-aligned ways that develop your sense of self instead of making you feel trapped or bored or fragmented

the ability to teach yourself new things. idk maybe as a teacher i am biased but i really believe that the single most transformative gift you can give any human being is a deep understanding of how people learn and improve at things. what is more hopeful, more inspiring, or more life-affirming than the realization that you can learn new things at any age, and that the new things you learn (plus the joyful process of learning itself!) can utterly transform the way you experience the world and understand yourself? what is more amazing or incredible than the realization that learning things is not a mysterious & passive process that happens to you but a reasonably consistent set of steps and tools that you can learn how to master and apply to virtually any skill or domain of human knowledge? the superpower of being able to learn/improve at anything you set your mind to… but also the superpower inherent in that quiet unwavering certainty that even if you feel stuck at various points in your life, you have within yourself the capacity to get unstuck through learning and changing and growing and experiencing new things. wowowowowowowow!!!!! what an extraordinary gift!!!!

#i did a classroom observation this week #in a mid-level environmental science research methods course #and at other points in my life i would've been either bored stiff by this experience or terrified because Science Is Hard #and I Am Humanities Person Cannot Do Science #but i actually found myself getting really fascinated by some of the stuff they were doing #i think combined with all the scientific studies i've been reading over the past six months related to fertility stuff #and i was like oh wait like #i could see myself going back and doing a bachelor's degree in a science field #like yeah this is unfamiliar to me & i have a lot of baggage around being Bad at STEM #but actually through doing lots of work with researchers & learning how research works in my own field #i think i've absorbed an understanding of some of the habits of mind science values #and i feel confident enough in my understanding of how people learn new things #that i bet i could apply that knowledge to learning disciplines that previously seemed Off Limits to me #anyway idk just #what a joy it is to be a thinking learning human in the world #how lucky are we!!!!!

#work was super busy for the last three months and ive been learning on the fly and its been like drinking through a firehose #just normal industry capitalism problems of not enough people and not enough time for a big fucking project #so it was down to either giving the new inexperienced person (me) the really fucking hard thing to do or no one does it lol #i do like the work wayyy more than my old job but its been A Lot #im fortunate enough to have a good manager and way more experienced people helping me get through it #anyway that dumb dumpster fire is basically done now (hopefully) so i'll (hopefully) not be using all my braincells as much #im also so bad and rotating additional blorbos and have ideas for that stuff rn that if incorporated into PE as is would be a big time skip #and a lot of 'ok just trust me this is how this is working'#anyway thats all my excuses lmao #if you are one of the people out there that can still read cursive and/or my handwriting you can spoil yourself #asks #ramblings #kennderland #STEM is all well and good until you get into it and realize how many things are holding on by a thread #thats a wholeeee other rant that i dont need to get started on lol

I am really so grateful to have grown up where I grew up and gone to college where I went to college 🙏 getting to know people from all over the world and all walks of life and emphasizing our common humanity and the importance of solidarity against empire and the establishment

#personal #between 2014-2018 there were several large protests about the occupation of gaza #we had the postdoc strike #we went through so much shit about daca #out in stem was just taking root at that campus #sacnas and nsbe were hitting their stride #our chicano studies major was one of the best in the country #i learned a lot and learned to keep learning #too bad my Instagram is full of people who sold out for coin and went to flir and lockheed and Raytheon blech #oh and we also had a huge successful Divest From Oil push with the campus #our initiatives to combat student food and housing insecurity were making huge progress #the community building and cultural celebration and inclusion in my local areas at home are the best ever #i am so happy to be back

So, between Espilver, who's the one to make the weirdest questions like "Honey, would you still love me if I were a worm?"?

100% Silver, who's got no filter and has enough random thoughts to ask the weirdest things. I like to think he's naturally very curious about the world and the universe at large, but there are many things he struggles to wrap his head around... and thus Espio gets constantly barraged by a stream of questions like "What's it like to be a star?" or "What if the ocean was land and the land was ocean and mountains were valleys and valleys were mountains?" or "What if I ate a rock, just very hypothetically" (that last one netted him a visit to the doctor, lmao). Espio would be more than happy to provide answers where he can, but I think there's quite a few things where he is forced to admit he either has no idea or where an answer basically transcends sentient experience. I figure that is also a determining factor for Espio to increase Silver's reading level, so that he can access literature and information to find answers to things Espio has no idea about. But if anything, that might just make Silver ask even more questions! Good thing Espio thinks it is very sweet and a virtue to be so curious.

But he would still love Silver if Silver were a worm, Silv gets assured. Espio would take very good care of him if he was a worm, but Es is also glad he is not a worm, because if he were, it would mean he'd be much less fluffy than he is now. Good enough of an answer to sate Silver <3

((I swear I lose a little piece of my soul whenever someone says that Pe.eta was "boring". People are allowed to have their opinions, obviously, but I feel like his character is so consistently misconstrued / misread as "boring" and "useless" because people think of KINDNESS as a "boring" or "useless" trait. There's SOOOO much interesting / enticing about Pe.eta as a character that's right there out in the open, you just need to read a little more thoroughly.))

#ooc.#((just saw an old HG book trilogy review where someone talked about how they thought the books could have been good #but that they hated both Ga.le and Pe.eta and they kept talking about how boring Pe.eta is and I had to just... stop reading it #because it was legit making me mad that this person who was reviewing tons of books on their blog couldn't seem to read these books #with enough thoughtfulness to realize that Pe.eta is actually a complex character.#And that his kindness comes not just from nowhere but from a place of never wanting to put others through the abuse he's been through.#He's a good guy in SPITE of his upbringing. In spite of the way his family treated him.#His kindness is because he knows what it feels like to be on the receiving end of cruelty #and he never wants to be the kind of person who puts someone else through that.#And then there's the lack of self worth which is also because of his upbringing #and how that effects his interactions with others / his willingness to die in the arena to save Kat.niss.#I whole heartedly believe that even if someone other than Kat.niss had been in the arena with him he would have tried to keep them alive to #because that's just the kind of person he is- he doesn't think he's the kind of person who SHOULD survive this. And he's kind enough and #selfless enough to want to help someone else get through it even at the cost of his own life. He doesn't feel he has much worth going home #to. But anyone else opposite of him? He would immediately see the positives of them. The people that love them. And he'd be willing to die #to be sure that they could make it back to their loved ones.#Also don't get me started on the fact that other parts of his personality also stem from his trauma / abuse.#When he's snappy / sassy it comes from a need to speak up for himself and others in a way he hasn't always been able to at home.#The moments he seems more meek or mild mannered are a learned defense - if he stays more quiet and stands out less at home #he's less likely to get in trouble over things / get verbally and or physically abused for perceived slights / missteps.#When he's charming it's partly because he had to LEARN to be charming. It was a mask that became a part of him.#In being popular at school (as Kat.niss said he was) it was to balance the fact that he felt out of place and unwanted at home.#He needed somewhere that he felt he belonged / was wanted... so he had to become charming and even flirtatious to a degree #to ensure he was liked by his peers. It was a way of saving himself so to speak. A way of trying to fill in the gaps #of the much needed love and attention that he wasn't getting at home.#I HAVE MORE TO SAY BUT I'LL SHUT UP NOW BC THE TAGS GOT OUT OF HAND.))#((There are just so many layers to this boy that aren't super obvious necessarily in the books because we're getting things from Kat.niss's #POV... but that seem more obvious if you're paying attention to what Kat.niss gives us about #Pe.eta's backstory / home life / etc))#((If it's not clear I am in the front lines of the Pe.eta defense squad and always have been.))
