Alexandre Dumas wrote the stage play Le Vampire aka The Return of Lord Ruthven the Vampire, a sequel to Polidori's The Vampyre.
In it, Lord Ruthven returns and confronts a female Ghoul called Zizika who raises the dead, and they become deadly rivals over human prey. Female vampires and a fairy are added into the fray.
So in 1851 Dumas wrote fanfic for The Vampyre and created several OCs for it.
Go create too!

ok i absolutely get why people put disclaimers on fics that it’s about the characters/show and not irl people (even if it does feel like a livejournal hangover)
but unfortunately every time i read one my brain is like. the funniest possible thing you could do would be to put a disclaimer on a fic that says actually. this is about those wwii paratroopers. i do think those veterans were fucking

🔥🔥opinions about OCs (in general)🔥🔥
ohhh ok listen listen i am speaking from the heart when i say this. we NEED to as a culture get more comfortable with ocs that are obviously inspired from a specific existing character/person/event/whatever but altered to suit the story. im not coming from a "cringe culture is dead" place with this im coming from a place of we need to do something to stop the ooc-fanfic-to-repurposed-fanfic-novel pipeline and i think if more writers understood they can just make an original character who looks like their blorbo and write an original story with them acting however they want them to act and doing whatever they want them do, then perhaps i would never have to hear about another book thats getting attention online wholly because of its not-so-secret fanfic origins ever again.

Publisher Update - English Simulpub announced
K-Manga, a US publishing site for Kodansha's manga, is due to launch in a week and has announced that the English translations of Witch Hat Atelier will be available as the Japanese chapters come out!
As it's a US site, you'll find you aren't able to access the teaser site without a VPN (I'm in the same boat!) - and I cannot confirm yet if payments will work outside of the US, but this is fantastic news for Witch Hat regardless!
If you're outside the US and wish to ask about whether the region will expand in the future, be sure to be polite when registering interest in wider coverage! In the meantime, be sure to support the official releases you can access - either by buying the volumes or the Japanese chapters on official sites.

You've spoken of IP concerns as the major practical barrier to generative AI use in the final product of a game. Steam seems to be about to become more open to games using these tools. What does this say about the industry's risk assessments?
I believe that Valve has determined they are ready and able to deflect any (current) legal liabilities onto an offending game's developers and off of themselves. Most of these devs are likely going to be similar to the AI-supported youtube content farms that regularly violate copyright but make money by having hundreds of channels all regurgitating videos such that it becomes difficult to copyright strike them all.
I also think that this decision will result in a wave of AI-supported shovelware and asset flips. Think about all of the RPGMaker games and Unity-type asset flips that are pervasive on Steam and just imagine more of those with AI-generated assets and such. I don't think the vast majority of these games will be any good, but they will certainly be plentiful since there's a much lower bar to make them.

I like to watch true crime content about like fucked up sadistic murder cases, cannibalism, cults etc. but then the algorithm recommends you idiotic shit like cops just publishing videos where a person on drugs was trying to resist arrest and braindead cop lovers whining about wanting to crucify these people and how you can tell they are monster sociopaths because of their facial expressions and how they were mean to a cop
