It's true that there's no practicable way to frame "style theft" as an intellectual property issue that wouldn't have horrifying consequences for independent artist, but that doesn't mean we can't have sympathy for all the artists who've spent their lives perfecting the craft of drawing moist-lipped, glassy-eyed, vaguely oily-looking anime girls in three-quarter profile and now everybody thinks they're a robot.

AO3 Was scraped for generative AI
Perhaps this is already common knowledge on this app, but I have yet to see anything about it in my feed. If you are unaware, an AI tech company called HuggingFace recently had a user by the name of nyuuzyou scrape our beloved AO3.
This scrape included over 63 MILLION fanfics written by the hard working, passionate, and incredible people of every fandom. The scrape was conducted with the intent of using the data to generate AI fanfiction and fiction. If you have a fanfic on AO3 that has an ID between 1-63 200 000, and is publicly accessible (not restricted to registered users), then your work was scraped and used in the process.
AO3 admins are currently searching for solutions and some kind of retributions. Until then, make sure to limit your works to registered users and show the real writers that you value their time and contribution to fandom.

Thinking is what makes you human. Making stones cut meat over teeth was fine. Cars were fine to save walking.
But if you don't think then you lose what makes you human.
generative AI literally makes me feel like a boomer. people start talking about how it can be good to help you brainstorm ideas and i’m like oh you’re letting a computer do the hard work and thinking for you???

it's so nice to see the dropout team consistently condemn the creative use of generative ai. just thought i'd share this for fans who don't follow paul on insta!

I hate how I see an interesting picture or video (and now, video games) and I have to stop and go “Is this AI?” before I can enjoy it
Not only do I feel constantly crazy by having to question everything I see and figure out if it’s REAL or not, it’s just fucking exhausting

That's no writing competition, and with that attitude, they are the last ones who should be hosting one.
a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?
come on

I don't care. I don't care. AI entertainment without anything in it. could it hurt? yes. By using AI the investors make money on theft.

If y’all needed any more proof that AI chatbot apps are extremely predatory and intentionally exploit vulnerable people…
Tumblr media
For context, I have been open on this account about my chatbot addiction. I developed a parasocial dependency to using Character AI and similar apps despite them being detrimental to my mental health and quality of life in general. I downloaded CAI again today to finally wipe my account and discourage myself from relapsing, and this fucking text came up while I was confirming the deletion.
The developers of these apps are not your friends, they are exploiting you. They are manipulating your emotions and fostering dependency to keep you addicted to their product. No matter how much they claim to care and be “risk aware,” they absolutely do not.
(Image ID: a screenshot of the Character AI account deletion confirmation screen. The popup reads: “…you sure about this? You’ll lose everything. Characters associated to your account, chats, the love that we shared, likes, messages, posts, and the memories we have together. This action cannot be undone!” Below this block of text is a username entry box, used to confirm account deletion.)

“Generative AI uses significant energy and water resources, but companies are generally not reporting details of these uses,” the [Government Accountability Office] said. Things also vary greatly depending on where in the U.S. an AI model is trained. It doesn’t cost the same amount to cool a datacenter in Texas as it does in Oregon. But what the GAO could figure out was startling. “It is not unusual to see new data centers being built with energy needs of 100 to 1000 megawatts, roughly equivalent to powering 80,000 to 800,000 households,” the GAO said. It added that 40 percent of that cost is just cooling the data center, a cost that’s expected to increase as the planet heats up.
[...]
The GAO report also noted that using generative AI as a search engine was far more costly than traditional search methods. “One estimate indicates using generative AI could cost 10 times more than a standard keyword search,” it said. According to the GAO’s estimates, AIs doing 250,000,000 queries a day would use as much electricity as 26,071 U.S. household’s use in a day and 1,100,836 gallons of water.

Hi! I’m thinking about a research paper I have to write next year. Do you know of any books about generative ai I could use as sources?
i recently read unmasking ai by dr. joy buolamwini, which is about her experience in ai research and development and a lot of the algorithmic biases in facial recognition software, as well as some of the ethical issues surrounding the training of ai. it was excellent.
other than that, i’m incredibly busy as a full time college student approaching graduation, but here’s a stack of books about ai that i recently got on thriftbooks, that all look very very interesting and promising and i’m looking forward to having time to read

today we had a real, legit school assignment to generate two images with AI. I'm not even joking. the title was "AI Generated Images" and I thought it would be some lecture against genAI, but NO.
instead of doing the assignment, I speedran 320 words against genAI in about ten or fifteen minutes and submitted that. I plan to take it, revise and add to it, and send it to the administration on why they should not be allowing, much less encouraging genAI in school spaces. it made me so, so, SO incredibly angry beyond words.
this is what I submitted.
Instead I shall list my reasons why generative artificial intelligence should not be used for art. Using AI to create art is not truly art because it does not have feeling, thought, and emotion behind it. AI art is just complicated algorithms that use a lot of energy to create images that a human could create too. The way AI works is by predicting the probability of the next word in the sentence. This is an example of gradient descent, which is used to optimize machines and math by finding the lowest point on a graph, or the most likely word to come next. Even AI writing is just copying all the human writing that can be found online. And, even if human art "doesn't look as good" as AI art, maybe it's not colored as cool-looking, or the lighting of the drawing is off, at least someone created it, at least they tried, at least it is real and organic. There is nothing artistic about using AI to create art or writing. All you do is put in a prompt. I can, however, acknowledge AI's usefulness in prompt generation. It can find and summarize ideas from across the internet quickly, which is a very practical and convenient matter. But it should not be used to create art, or writing, or music, or videos. Humans should be doing that. There's a saying that goes, "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." So humans shouldn't be afraid to create, instead of using AI to generate some conglomeration of probabilities that then floods the internet and makes it extremely difficult to distinguish between art that is real, and images generated by AI. The only way to improve art or writing or music or any other kind of creation is to start, and work hard, instead of using the "easy way out" that is provided by artificial intelligence. Thank you for your time :)
yes, I did know about gradient descent before. yes, I did summarize it myself instead of using AI to summarize.
def could be better but I'm still pretty proud of it. I SWEAR IF THIS GETS FED TO AI I WILL PUNCH SOMEONE
