And so...what?
That was it? I went in hoping for a rousing retelling of Leni's 2022 campaign, giving it the platform it needed for the audience to understand "why her?", and what went wrong. So we don't repeat it in 2028.
Instead what we got was a meandering, structureless, Maria Ressa-forward documentary. It never fully articulates why we're revisiting A Thousand Cuts here (though I did Google after that Ramona Diaz really intended this to be a companion piece).
Leni's campaign deserved the full scope of a political documentary, perhaps a la Knock Down the House. Something that chronicles her staggering uphill battle against a dynastic Goliath, her life behind the scenes, the principles and policies she propped her political career up on. Instead it was reduced to vignettes and campaign b-rolls, never providing a deeper insight into the movement. We get more of Maria tearing up at her book, getting that call about the Nobel prize, and Rappler journalists being stress-tested for the death of democracy. All worthy subjects, but maybe oddly hyper-focused here.
There is no deep dive of the woman who was to become Vice President, which I felt was such a missed opportunity. It never gives Leni the space to become a full character with her own arc - beyond her being a widow perhaps. It assumes we already know (and love) her, and that tells a lot about who this documentary was being made for. Not people we want to welcome into the cause. Not for those who asked “why her?” It perpetuates the echo chamber, the same one that turned people away from her and the cause. The very insularity that cost her an election, and the Filipinos a better version of…whatever parallel universe we’re in today. We don’t see the buildup to Leni’s story - why was she beloved? What prompted these grassroots campaigns, the bikers, the Miss Gay candidates, the theater folk? At the other end of the spectrum, why was she hated? Who was she up against?
Halfway through Marcos Jr.’s term and a budding Duterte resurgence, this story becomes all the more important to tell. We need to remember what went wrong. The film follows a campaign that, in Diaz’s words, was “never seen before”, but she fails to translate the heart, the nuances. So for 113 minutes, things just…happen. But maybe that’s the point. That democracy is slow and unraveling, messy and nonlinear. I just hoped it told me something I didn’t already know.

“Setting the Record Straight: Real Facts about LenLen”
In today’s divided political climate, it is not uncommon for public figures to be at the center of heated debates and criticism, especially when it comes to high-profile personalities like the former Vice-President Leni Robredo. In April of 2022, Jam Magno, a prominent social media personality known for her very outspoken political views, created a heated debate with a tweet composing of multiple claims against Robredo, with an opening remark saying “Walang nagawa si LenLen”, which is an obvious attempt to undermine Robredo’s contributions and qualifications in leadership.
Jam Magno’s tweets include 10 claims aimed at undermining Leni Robredo’s record and accomplishments. In this post, we’ll take the time to debunk each of these 10 claims providing the facts that challenge the disinformation and set the record straight.
Claim 1: “Walang nagawa”
This bold statement implies that Robredo, over the course of her years in politics has accomplished nothing in her roles as the Vice President and as a public servant. In truth, Leni Robredo has a long track of advocacy and public service accomplishments that contradicts this claim. Starting off with her program “Angat Buhay”, and as of December 2021, it has been able to help around 622,000 families in 223 cities/municipalities, utilized P520 million, made possible by her initiative to partner up with 372 organizations (Antonio, 2022). The scope of Angat Buhay is far-reaching, not only in terms of geographic coverage but also in impact across various sectors in society. The program’s widespread success serves as a testament to what can be achieved when private and public sectors come together.
Claim 2: “Bobo, Lutang, at Estupida”
One of the most common claims against Robredo is that she is stupid, which is typically made by her critics to degrade her intellect and qualifications. However, this is far from accurate when we look at her educational background, information which is available publicly, and also the track record of her extensive career. Leni Robredo is a lawyer by profession (Angat Buhay, 2023), this academic distinction speaks volumes about her intellectual capabilities . Her work in Angat Buhay is the largest volunteer-driven initiative in the country (Lalu, 2023), which proves that she is highly organized and focused on tangible results. Additionally, the term “Estupida” is a type of language that is often used when there are no logical arguments to counter a person's stance, it seeks to delegitimize based on personal attacks instead of rational debate. Ad Hominem.
Claim 3: “Kakampi ng NPA Terrorists”
The claim the Leni Robredo is a “kakampi ng NPA terrorists” is a serious, baseless and false accusation. This is aimed to associate Robredo with illegal and violent activities, an accusation which is unfounded and lack any credible evidence. Robredo, over the years has consistently condemned violence and terrorism, she has emphasized peaceful dialogue and political solutions, and also advocates for Human Rights and has even termed to put an end to “a culture of violence” in the country (Lazaro, 2022).
Claim 4: “ Puppet ng mga Dilawan”
According to Punzalan (2023), Leni Robredo’s independent service and community focused programs have shown that she is not under the Dilawan group’s influence. Without displaying political bias, her Angat Buhay project assisted underprivileged areas, and she made her own choices based on her ethical values and principles. She also publicly challenged previous governments, demonstrating her dedication to serving the people rather than the objectives of a political party.
Claim 5: “Attorney no Case”
The idea that Leni Robredo "has no case" can be interpreted in several ways. If the claim refers to the lack of any serious criminal charges or legal cases against her, then it is true — she has not been involved in criminal cases that would undermine her legal standing or political career. However, if the claim is related to the Marcos election protest, it is important to note that she has won legal victories, and the protest has largely been dismissed. Any narrative suggesting Robredo has "no case" needs to be assessed in the context of her legal history, and it should not be confused with baseless or politically motivated attacks on her character.
Claim 6: “ Kumabit sa di asawa”
Leni Robredo consistently maintained that she had only ever been in love with her late husband, Jesse Robredo. She has shown her unwavering loyalty to his memory by expressing that she didn’t seek out any other relationships since his death and finds the possibility of dating again impossible (Punzalan, 2024).
Claim 7: “ Walang dala nung pumunta sa Siargao”
Based on the news of GMA (2021), following Typhoon Odette’s impact on Siargao, Vice President Leni Robredo coordinated rescue operations in order to provide necessary supplies to the island. In addition to ensuring that extra assistance reached the most affected towns facing food shortages and power outages, she assisted in arranging more flights for stranded tourists.
Claim 8: “Nagpatayo ng bulok na pabahay”
One of Leni Robredo's main projects as Vice President is the Angat Buhay program, which focuses on helping communities, especially those in need of housing. This includes housing projects that have been implemented in areas ravaged by disasters or in poor communities. The projects were carried out through the cooperation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the private sector, and local governments.
Claim 9: “Sinisiraan si President Duterte”
Leni Robredo has openly criticized President Duterte, particularly on issues related to human rights abuses during the drug war, as well as on policies that she believes were detrimental to the country. For example, she raised concerns about extrajudicial killings in the drug war, the erosion of democratic institutions, and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Robredo’s Criticisms Are Not “Siraan” or Personal Attacks: Robredo's critiques, while strong, have generally been framed around policy issues, not personal attacks against Duterte. She has criticized the government for what she perceives as failures in leadership and governance, but these criticisms are rooted in political and policy differences rather than in attempts to personally malign Duterte.
Claim 10: “Malabnaw ang Spaghetti”
The "anemic spaghetti" meme, like the "malabnaw spaghetti" one, is a satirical exaggeration intended to discredit Leni Robredo’s character and leadership. It reduces her to a joke based on a personal moment, overlooking the core of her political vision. By labeling her approach as "anemic," critics attempted to undermine the practicality and effectiveness of her policies, when in reality, her record as Vice President and her leadership in various civic initiatives were far from weak. Therefore, this claim is irrelevant.

Looking back, I often see her, Sec. and former Mayor Jessie, and the kids wandering around Naga. I often see them during PTA meetings, family days, and other school events in Universidad de Sta. Isabel. Tricia was a former classmate from grades 2 - 6, that was in 2001-2006. And even then, their family was among the ordinary families in Naga - going to church, strolling in malls, eating out, and this is not a surprise -- you can also see them at the bus terminal, waiting for their ride to Manila. It was so amazing that a former classmate and her mom are now in the headlines, about to become members of the first family.
There was also an instance in 2013, VP Leni, was a congresswoman back then, she was a guest in the same event I volunteered to participate in. The event "Parangal sa Mga Manghahabing Bayani" was an event to recognize the jute weavers behind a homegrown bag brand - Mr. Kengkoy. The humble congresswoman appeared in the events hall wearing a simple black dress, who just came from another engagement that day. She was calm and very soft spoken, and very, very humble.
Fast forward to 2017, I luckily bumped into VP Leni and Tricia at the bus terminal. I was with my parents and sister. My papa and mama were pushing me to talk to Tricia to have a picture taken with VP Leni. I was really shy but ended up doing what my parents asked me to do. It was a very short kumustahan. Tricia just said that it was really a long time since we met in person (I think that last time was when we were in high school, we did some grade 6 class reunions). She also asked me where I am currently working. And I just answered briefly. I was REALLY shy. My parents were also able to talk to VP Leni saying that me and Tricia were grade school classmates in USI and have been in school events with her and Sec. Jesse. VP Leni responded that she remembered seeing my parents too! And yes, her memory is really sharp and even if she's the second highest official of the countrty, she's still very humble. And as were leaving the bus terminal, we also learned that my ate, who was also travelling to Manila for work was luckier because she got to ride the bus with VP Leni, Tricia, and Jillian.
February 8, 2022 was the kickoff rally of VP Leni, Sen. Kiko and the Tropang Angat in CamSur. I was so excited to go to work that day because I it feels festive, seeing all the preparations made in various towns in CamSur and Naga City. I was also monitoring the Facebook live feeds in my computer while working. I really felt the joy that the Bicolanos experience during fiestas such as the Peñafrancia Fiesta held every year in September. But due to the pandemic, the festivities were suspended. As soon as my work ended, I and my bestfriend, in our hot pink and old rose shirts, decided to attend the Grand Rally in Plaza Rizal. We carpooled and parked the car at SM City Naga and walked going to the venue for we were assuming the entire Panganiban Drive will be closed, or if not, we'll be stuck in traffic. Slightly tired from our walk, we decided to eat our snacks to fill our tummies before joining the crowd of Bicolano Kakampinks. Naga Garden, known for serving delicious mami and siopao, was filled with people - young and old, wearing their Leni shirts of different designs and shades of pink. "Wow! Solid! Lupet!" That's what I was thinking. I was full of hope and am very proud that VP Leni, the most qualified and competent presidentiable is from my hometown - Naga City.
** Online rallies. News on the upcoming election. Trolls/bashers **
I just recently attended the One Pink March, the second grand rally of Leni-Kiko and the Tropang Angat. I was really eager to attend the said event and even signed up as early as March. Belonging to the employees who work in shifts, I eagerly requested and insisted that I may be on off duty during the grand rally, May 6, 2022. I even bought three kakampink shirts and pink items to show my support. I hate being in crowded places, being under the heat of the sun, and being stuck in traffic but I didn't mind those simple discomforts. I just wanted to show my support and let my candidates win for the Philippines - for a better nation! And that flame of hope lit up when VP Leni decided to run for the presidency in October 2021. She has been working tirelessly, showing resilience and resourcefulness to every calamity, fighting corruption, aiding the pandemic, and helping each and every Filipino live a better life. But despite doing an excellent job, she became the center of fake news and trolls.
Election Day - May 9, 2022
EXCITED! I left the house after eating breakfast and without taking a bath yet because I wanted to vote already! I waited for an hour for my turn (I'm kinda lucky my voting precinct isn't as crowded as the others) but didn't mind the waiting time and the summer heat. And then, my turn finally came! I WAS HOLDING THE BALLOT AND THE MARKING PEN! I WAS A BIT TENSED that I might invalidate the vote! I might commit an undo-able mistake in shading the circle. BUT I WAS FULL OF HOPE! I was very happy to have casted my vote to my most deserving candidates. I was proud of myself for not messing up. I am a voter. I was a proud Filipino. When I got home, I was monitoring the updates via twitter about VP Leni and the other presidentiables. I was also excited that I might bump into VP Leni somewhere in the streets of Naga. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. I wanted to see my beacon of hope so baaad! >.<
Loads of Disappointment
The results of the election was a disappointment. It crushed the ball of flaming hope in me. I was devastated. From the time the first partial unofficial result went out, that was just 3% of the election returns, until the votes of BongBong Marcos reached 30M, I can hardly look at the figures. I can't look straight at the monitor. I was brokenhearted but still hoping that there are glitches in the results.
The day after the elections, a thanksgiving mass for VP Leni was held at the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral. I had the leisure to attend to it but I was really tired, devastated, and heartbroken. I didn't go. But I passed by the streets of Naga, it was still filled with pink banderitas, ribbons, ornaments, tarpaulins, and murals. I also passed by the Solid Leni Bicol Headquarters in the Carmen Hotel. Everything was still intact but there's a big thing missing - the excitement, joy, and hope that was birthed during the campaign period.
I reached home and opted to attend the thanksgiving mass virtually. I can still feel the sadness. And it might even be sadder if I was physically present in the Cathedral.
Coping Up -- dream about VP Leni :)) FB live, pink museum
Pasasalamat -- Angat Buhay Foundation
I wanted to meet you in person, my beacon of hope! :D

Fandom : The Activist
When it comes to acts of activism, in my opinion, nobody is as driven as the Kpop fandom. Kpop fans have been known to use their platform (on social media) and the influences of their own selves as a whole to support various social causes. These fans would leverage social media to raise awareness, raise funds, and coordinate efforts for issues like human rights, climate change, and mental health. Kpop fans are known to be as charitable as their idols as they've organized online fundraisers to support charitable causes. But first things first, what is activism? Liberties, 2023 states that activism refers to an action that is used to challenge those in power to bring change and benefit society for the greater good whereas Cambridge Dictionary defines activism is an act of advocating for better rights, or simply the use of direct and noticeable action to achieve a result, usually a political or social one.
Activists challenge the status quo by use their voice to bring about social, political, economic or environmental reform. There is no single way to conduct activism, any collective action which draws attention to an issue constitutes activism. (Brooks. E, 2023) While traditional forms of activism include demonstrations and protests, activists can also resort to non conventional forms of activism if earlier efforts show no results or is ignored by the majority, such as protesting online, signing petitions and sending it to respective organizations that support the cause and more.
An example of this would be the "Match A Million" campaign done by ARMYs in showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement. This particular campaign was done by ARMYs matching Kpop boy group BTS's $1 million donation to BLM within 24 hours. According to Forbes, 2020, BTS had expressed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement, writing on Twitter/X “We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatter.” Soon it started a chain of (financial) support from ARMYS from all over the world. ARMYs began trending the hashtag #MatchAMillion, encouraging the fans to donate what they can. The fan led charity group named "One in an ARMY" created a website and a specific page that redirects fans to a page where ARMYs can donate, which is known as ActBlue card, where it tracks donations mades by fans, allowing fans and donors to split their money between 16 groups, such as National Police Accountability Project, Black Visions Collective, Unicorn Riot, Black AIDS Institute, BLACK LGBTQIA+ Migrant project and more, where again, fans can split donations to all groups or donate specific amounts of donations to the groups individually.
Second would be ATINYs. Fans of the Kpop boy group ATEEZ created a campaign on behalf of The Polished Man campaign in 2020, donating over $30,000 as stated in their website. The Polished Man is a campaign devoted to helping violence and abuse against children, with the money donated by ATINYs to help and support trauma prevention and recovery programs towards children who were victims of violence, neglect and abuse, according to KpopMap, 2022.
In 2020, November 11th, the Philippines was hit by a typhoon, known as the Ulysses typhoon. According to user @lenirobredo on Twitter/X, who is also the 14th Vice President of The Philippines, Filipino fans of YG Entertainment girl and boy group, BLACKPINK and TREASURE, known as BLINKS and Treasure Makers, respectively, came out to help with the cause by donating copious amounts of canned food, rice, noodles, and diapers to those affected (Leni Robredo, 2020).

(Image sourced from @LeniRobredo on Twitter/X)
So what does this tell us? In my point of view, Kpop fandoms engaging in activism may and can serve as not only a noble cause but a good PR/Image control for the idols, a potential marketing strategy for a Kpop idol. From my personal observations, especially on social media, Kpop fans can be rather hostile towards rival fans, thus impacting the image of said Kpop idols in a bad light, especially when it becomes a topic in Korean forums. So when fans engage in activities such as donating rice on behalf of the Kpop idol, or come up with campaigns like ATINYs or ARMYs, their actions paint the idols in a more positive light.

Five times L tried to take R out and one time she didn’t have to.
First
Risa glared joking to her friend, knowing full well how Leni would tease her and she feared that Leni might assume that she sees their friendship beyond platonic—which she does, but she didn’t want to insinuate anything because it seems as though Leni sees her as a friend and just a friend alone.
Little did she know, the frequent senate visits weren’t as 𝘢𝘭𝘭-𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴-𝘢𝘯𝘥-𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨-𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 as she thinks. Leni does make way to see her Therese, a nickname so far off from what people usually call Risa, an endearment that both insinuates and does not insinuate something. A pet name that only belonged to Leni and Leni alone.
“Ayan na si Therese, Lens,” Loren pointed out. “Go get your girl!” And then Loren walked away before the other woman could respond to her teasing.
𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨. Three years after Leni realised she was head-over-heels Risa and the way her heartbeat remained the same—quick, and clear that it only beats for her Therese and her Therese alone.
“Hi, Leon.”
𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨. 𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨. 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱, 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵. 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱.
Leni sighed, a deep one that seemed to have left Risa worried. “Oh, you’re not happy to see me?” Ugh, nakakainis naman. Hindi. Hindi ‘yun ‘yon.
“No-“
“I’m… ang ganda mo kasi. Uhm,”
*smack*
?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
𝘉𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭, 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵.
“Oh… what did I do to deserve that?” Leni smiled as if the entire kiss on the cheek didn’t take her aback.
“Well, you always deserve that, Leon. I just don’t give you enough of it… that’s why.” And then Risa stuck her tongue out at Leni. 𝘚𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘰, 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘢. 𝘚𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘢, 𝘴𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘢. 𝘚𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘢!
𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨. 𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨.
“Oh.” 𝘖𝘩.
Leni had to shake it off, even though she knew it wouldn’t wear off, just like her adoration for Risa; nothing wears off, but everything piles up and becomes a new form of loving she cradles to bed every night.
The agenda is to ask Risa out for dinner tonight. This act isn’t new, in fact, it’s what they often do. But it never ceases to make her a nervous wreck. Maybe that’s how she is with Risa, a head-over-heels nervous wreck who is over the moon for the Senator who only sees her as a friend.
“Therese… uhm,” Leni bit her lip adamantly, “do you wanna go out tonight?”
𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨. 𝘋𝘶𝘨 𝘥𝘶𝘨.
“Oh!” But before Risa could answer, someone poked her from behind. A familiar face that just doesn’t fail to ruin Leni’s day.
“Hi, ladies.” James greeted the two women, one surprised with glee and another seemed surprised awfully.
Risa looked more excited, a tad happier than she was seconds ago. Leni’s demeanour is colder, a tad disappointed but she showed no remorse of some sort.
𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳, 𝘓𝘦𝘯𝘴, 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘤.
“Tara na, Ris?” 𝘙𝘪𝘴. 𝘕𝘰 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘵. 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, 𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴. 𝘜𝘨𝘩. 𝘉𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘵.
Leni didn’t wait for the rejection. It seemed pointless and she bid her goodbye before Risa could speak.
“Sige, Therese. Next time na lang.” She caressed Risa’s arms as a sign of goodbye. “Bye, James.”
𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘯𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘰. 𝘚𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵.

Just saw the PasigLaban rally online. Daming tao. Many friends attended. Musicians I love sang. Do rallies matter? They do. But so does actively campaigning in the outskirts, sa dulo hindi sa sentro.
I voted for Leni in 2016 despite the absence of grand rallies and celebrities waiting to kiss her hand left and right, because I was so enamored by her laylayan narrative. Ang sarap naman kasing pakinggan ng "tayo naman". But she left a bad taste in my mouth after she shunned Leody de Guzman in her so-called unity talks and instead choosing to bond with Pacquiao, Isko, and Ping Lacson, all of whom chose to backstab her. It puts into question her "tayo naman" narrative, kasi if not Leody and the ordinary manggagawa, sino yung "tayo"? I do not want another incarnation of a detached rich person in power. In an interview, she expressed approval of the NTF-ELCAC mandate (which is to red-tag people), and in the Jessica Soho talk she was flippant about ICC's probe of EJK in the time of Duterte. I always say I may still end up voting for her because she is the strategic (not principled) vote to ensure a Marcos loss, but I don't take kindly to exclusion, to flip-flopping principles in the name of winnability, to elitism, to virtue signaling.
I know the things she's done despite limited resources and zero mandate; I volunteered for her Bayanihan E-Konsulta movement last year so I have seen it first-hand. But when you vote for a national leader, you look at all facets, not just what you choose to see. My dad raised me to question things, to not take things at face value. I was very young when he exposed me to the news, to political talk, and ever since voting for my first president in 2010, I have been a keen observant of the scene. I have too many friends who support Leni, and this may offend them, so I'm sorry, but in a night where the streets are painted pink, I thought I'd give a dissenting view. That's democracy for you.

LABAN LENI 2022 Mas radikal and magmahal sa kulay rosas na bukas
i. I am craving for more human interactions lately, and there is no better way to achieve this than to be a volunteer for a great cause. Besides, I really fucking want (and need) a change in this shithole of a country and I do believe that Leni Robredo, this coming election’s best presidential candidate, could do that. So, on the first day of March, I signed up to be a campaign volunteer here in my town and I’ve never been so happy. Let’s do this! Fight tyranny!
ii. I am not proud to say this but when I was younger, I was a bit apolitical. Cut to today, I am very happy to have finally found that spark in my heart to love my country and my people – especially the oppressed. I have realized that every fucking thing is political and one must make a stand. I am a bit late, but I am here now. I am ready to fight with all of you, for a better Philippines.
iii. It was my first time to attend a political rally in my whole life. And I was glad that it was for Leni Robredo’s campaign. The energy of her people’s campaign is really different, unique, and outstanding. You can really feel the love, the kindness. It is truly giving passion, compassion and power to the people. Whatever happens, I will always be proud to support Leni Robredo and the whole Tropang Angat in this journey.
