Me: I guess I’ll start on the book while I’m waiting.

Prologue by the author: Holmes’ Victorian London was not all good. For example, people were concerned about immigrants, just like they were today.

Me: Uh-oh.

Prologue: Also, after I mused about Holmes, I got this mysterious manuscript-

Me: I’m sorry, Miss or Mrs. or Ms. MacBird, that was done a lot better by Kim Newman. 

Me: At least he invented a fictional character to provide the framing device. And snarky footnotes throughout the book.

Watson, on Literally The Second Page: Let me describe the things concerning the public at the time the story is set.

Me: Let me guess-

Book: Like immigration! And women’s rights!

Me: ...I think the machine was trying to protect me.

Seriously, Newman’s book did a lot better at satirizing bigotry and prejudice  and stuff without beating you over the head. It helps that it’s more comedy than mystery to begin with.

I’m not sure if MacBride’s book is more or less forced than The Abominable Bride.

Also, Holmes is about to become Public Domain in the UK. Just FYI.

Just because we don’t see things the way other people do, does that make us or them wrong?

Write down the letter 'W'. Most people will only see the letter 'W', because of the angle at which we are looking at it.

If we turn it upside down, we will see the letterM'; If we look from the right side, it appears as the number '3', and looking at it from the left side, we see the letter 'E'.

The fact that we don’t see things at the perspective that everyone is seeing it doesn’t make us wrong.

We relate to people and challenges based on the perspective at which we are looking at the situation.
