Then you list what you’re reminded of with each color, then where you’ve seen positive examples of those colors in rooms or even movies and artwork.

Now for the not so good qualities: low-key white-washing and narrow assumptions on lifestyle. Most of the images come from Elsie and Emma’s own homes, and the two authors are young-ish American white women. So of course when showing their own spaces, the images will show a happy white lady in her home. However, even images in the Celebrate sections, which feature a different party-themed recipe and decorations, are close to celebrating only white kids, grandmas, girlfriends, etc. I appreciated the Celebrate sections because it’s another way of portraying decor as connected to how we actually live. Unfortunately, it’s really not diverse. Nothing varies outside of a traditional American concept of family. I cringed when I saw the Mr. & Mrs. mugs, you know, the kind of images where he has the bow tie and she has the red lipstick: it’s such a narrow and controlled expression of gender roles in a family. This limitation doesn’t present interior design as a meaningful means of self-care and personal expression for anyone, but rather as a way for white women to feel special. Which in itself isn’t problematic. Everyone deserves to feel special and to have a positive relationship between their mental and emotional self-concept and the material objects around them. But while I think Elsie and Emma’s decor is presented with a lot of possibility (‘do this in YOUR own way’), the majority of the images presented cater to a life lived by a narrow group of people. Most likely, most readers live this lifestyle, and so in a supply-and-demand mindset, the job was done well. However, if we truly consider interior design as empowering, cathartic, and simply a happy thing to do, these books need to do better.  

The ideas presented in this book are true DIY opportunities to engage with the material space around you and express your personality. Although the authors’ styles show clearly throughout the book, Happy Handmade Home presents itself as an example instead of an aspiration. I personally wouldn’t incorporate a lot of Elsie or Emma’s style choices into my home, but that’s a just taste thing! I definitely recommend some of the DIY treatments for those who want to get started or have limited resources. I’m sure readers can find at least a few ideas that they could do immediately without leaving home. I appreciate this book’s commitment to an interior design approach that avoids simply buying a thing, but instead cheers people on: you can actually do it yourself. You’re more powerful than you know.

On a personal level, I support a very commendable and charitable organisation called Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. It is involved with the education of poor children in the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. How do you define success and how do you measure up to your own definition? Success is the ability to cope with failure. I try to measure up to this by living through my failures just as I have been able to celebrate my successes. We are constantly making things better faster smarter and less expensive. In other words, we strive to do more with less. Tell us about a recent project or solution that you have made that is smarter and faster or less expensive. There are several initiatives being implemented in our enterprise in relevance to that category. Our entire human resource and attendance tracking system for four thousand employees are on a biometric system which is linked to a human resource management system. This allows us to process payroll without any human intervention or manual attendance keeping. The second initiative that we have introduced is the first of its kind in the food services industry.  We have developed our very own technology platform that allows our guests to view the menus online, make selections and place their orders. This has reduced confusion and order misplacements drastically. It also helps us understand consumer tastes and preferences better; allowing us to tailor our menus to suit the palate of different consumers and thereby reduce wastage. Through this technology, we have been able to predict the amount of consumption more accurately. We can also create diverse menus digitally, which has enabled consistency in the recipes we create. This will also ensure that consumers get the value for the price they pay. In addition, this technology is linked to our backend inventory management system that enables us to reduce the likelihood of perishable items that we hold in the inventory. What is the most significant aspect of leadership? I think that the ability to deal with failure is the most important aspect for any leader. A leader has to accept that they cannot be right all the time. Your perception of an empowered society, how far can your organisation contribute to the same? An empowered society, to me, is one that recognises the rights of all its members. I think there is an evolution underway currently in the foodservice industry. An evolution in which more importance and recognition is being given to the rights of consumers, the rights of service providers and, most importantly, the rights to all those who help produce the raw materials. Farmers need to be respected and understood as a crucial part of the food production industry. They act as sustenance to the well-being of all the other aspects within the industry. One thing that you want to change and one thing you want to retain in your industry The one thing I would want to change in the industry is its attitude towards safety, which lacks in comparison to most other developing and developed markets. The one thing I would wish to retain is the importance we give to fresh food. In India, we love to eat our food fresh. So, food continues to be made and consumed on the same day which drastically reduces our dependence on frozen food in comparison to the western world. One thing you have to let go as an entrepreneur or leader? Ans: The thought that “I have the ability to control all the events around me.” Whom do you owe your success to? Well, there is a list of leaders whom I looked up to right from the beginning. SISTec provides transport facility to its day scholars on nominal charges through its self- owned comfortable buses. The Position

We are looking for an experienced Barista/Supervisor to join our catering team based at the David Jones Café at the Pacific Fair shopping centre on the Gold Coast. Reporting to the Head Chef your success will stem from your experience in cooking with a focus on quality, presentation and food safety. You will be working with a small team to assist within a short order/a la carte kitchen. You will be working approx. 30.5 hours per week. Additional hours may be available as per business trends. Our open kitchen concept requires all team members to be outgoing, knowledgeable and welcoming. Attention to detail for prep and service will require ideal candidate to be thoroughly organised throughout service and will be able to utilise time efficiently.

Key Duties

Deliver to our client’s high expectation of a premium experience, using premium products

Great presentation also key, as clean and tidy work space is essential due to the open concept kitchen.

Maintaining a high standard of food hygiene, safety, infection control and cleanliness in accordance with Compass standards

Cooking, preparing food (breakfast, morning/afternoon tea, lunch etc) for 50+pax restaurant

Carrying out general kitchen duties as required

Assisting staff and customers at the front of house

Accepting and receiving of deliveries

Food safety background essential, daily temperature checks, cleaning rosters and adherence to all state and federal food safety laws required.

Enhance workplace culture – display high levels of customer service, contribute ideas and be flexible to meet the needs of the business.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Extensive coffee training, including coffee art, grinder maintenance and training staff

Enthusiastic person with an engaging and positive outlook, displays outstanding customer service at all times; a real passion for food

Impeccable personal presentation and communication skills

Ideally a Food Safety Supervisor qualification

Fantastic customer service skills and a passion to deliver exceptional quality

Solid understanding of classic techniques with a flair for modern presentation

Ability to maintain a calm and respectful demeanour at all times, no matter the circumstance
