Diego's Fall 2023 Internship Summation

In the fall semester of 2023, I interned for the company SeaLifeRipple, which is a video-based swimming lessons company that also focuses on children’s meditation and mindfulness. The company was founded in 2020 by Kelsey Fleming.

When I questioned my supervisor about the motivation behind creating SeaLifeRipple, she answered that her reason for combining the three practices is that when she was younger, she began teaching swimming lessons from the age of 14 and incorporated meditation and mindfulness lessons into her structure when, after receiving her certification in health coaching, she saw athletes practice them in order to perform better. She also cited the book “Attached” by Dr. Amir Levine and Rachel Heller, M.A., as inspiration for the underlying motivation of her videos. The book covers how parents who establish healthy relationships with their children from an early age help prepare them to build healthy relationships with romantic partners or other significant others later in life. By her inclusion of mindfulness activities - such as affirmations, breathing exercises, and visualizations - she believes it will help motivate a healthy bond between parent and child, which would help the child pursue healthy relationships as they grew older.

For my internship, I did a day’s worth of recordings of introductions and outros with which to update the pre-existing project files that my supervisor had me work on by improving or expanding upon the work of the previous interns that had worked with her. The remainder of the internship was spent editing the projects as necessary, reviewing with my supervisor about certain directions or issues, and finalizing the projects by rendering and exporting them under a new name, so as to avoid rewriting over past interns’ work. This involved me learning how to readjust the render location on a project file and how to redirect the save locations of the different properties, such as captured audio and video, audio and video previews, and the other media located in the project. As I did my edits, I began experimenting with the lighting, the sound, and the various technical facilities Premiere Pro had to offer, which allowed for some easy audio modifications, as well as some interesting visual enhancements.

However, not everything was smooth sailing. The most frequent issue during the beginning of my internship was dealing with missing files, such as custom lower thirds and graphics, as well as the lack of reverse compatibility with the 2023 and 2024 versions of Adobe Premiere Pro that made me create new timelines that worked with the updated version. Luckily, I was able to get help through my supervisor and my peers. Firstly, my supervisor was able to get me in contact with the previous intern, who was very helpful in sharing what he still had from his work on the projects. Secondly, the Communications department assistant helped me adjust my Premiere settings so that I was able to fix the technical issues. Whenever I felt as though there were issues with the project or the general flow of the video, I would always contact my supervisor, who was more than willing to help with her own advice or vision with which to guide me.

The advice that I would give to the next intern who works with SeaLifeRipple is the following; “Take it easy; there is no pressure to overwork or overthink something. If there are any issues that you find while working on an assignment, the supervisor will be more than willing to help you with it, as should your teachers or peers.”

Given that I had no formal training with video editing or videography to any degree before I began with the Communications program, I felt there was definitely a solid amount of preparation that I received for my internship. The major influences that I can cite from Delaware Tech would have to be my Composition teacher from the fall semester of 2022, who helped me understand the flow of a sentence as well as the general structure to make a point, my Videography teachers from the spring and fall semesters of 2019, who helped me understand the beats and rhythms of a video, as well as the effect that different styles of lighting can have on a scene, and my Graphics and Design teacher from the fall semester of 2018, who has been a helpful source of information and guidance since day one. Given that there were a few semesters in the middle of my time in Delaware Tech where I did not attend, I was afraid that what I had learned had left my memory. However, given that the teachers had been so impassioned with their teaching in the classes, I was able to recall and surprise not only the teachers that I returned to but myself with all the knowledge I was able to retain.

When all is said and done, should I decide to work within my degree, I would like to become a freelance photographer and videographer.  I would like to create ads for small local companies, such as hardware stores and small restaurants, so it would be best that I make a solid rapport with said local businesses so that I can start on building my reputation. Overall, I would like to fish out my next client and make for them what I can for a price that will work for the both of us.

The flu continues to spread across the U.S. infecting millions. A total of 6.2 million new cases this season. Nearly 3,000 deaths since October. It is expected flu numbers will increase dramatically with the holiday season upon us and large family gatherings. The increase this season attributed to two factors. One, the flu season began earlier. The other, a larger number of people have gone unvaccinated. Thus making it easier for the virus to spread. Bess Levin wrote an article 11/28 re Trump's pre Thanksgiving dinner with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes: Trump Doesn't Want To Condemn His Holocaust Denying Dinner Date Because It Might Alienate His Jew Hating Supporters. Levin wrote: "The President who reportedly insisted that Hitler did a lot of good things wants to keep his antisemitic followers happy." Kanye West spelled out his antisemitic credentials when he said he "loved Hitler and the Nazis." Twenty four year old Nick Fuentes at an early age is an outspoken bigot. His positions/comments: He denies the Holocaust happened, likens Jews burning in gas chambers to baking cookies, claims "whites are under attack," is against mixed marriages (Louis comment - Beware Clarence and Ginni Thomas), called for the military to be sent into Black neighborhoods, and demanded "that Jews leave the country." Jews are not the only group he is down on. Women, also. He has said we need to go back to "burning them alive." A great dinner companion! A major Key West annual event tomorrow at 5. The burning of the hurricane flag. To commemorate the end of hurricane season which is tomorrow November 30. The Conch Republic will do the honors. The event will take place at Truman Waterfront Park in front of the historic U.S. Coast Guard Ingham. Syracuse/Illinois basketball tonight at 7. Game will be carried on ESPN. Illinois ranked #16. Syracuse already struggling. I paid for my sins yesterday. Big time. Suffered horrendous pain. My ankles have been pretty good the past 3 weeks. Down 75 percent. No foot pain. It began yesterday morning. Right ankle began swelling. Not bad, but enough. Pain in sole of foot. Especially when standing or walking. The pain extreme. Left ankle nothing. Spent the afternoon in bed with legs elevated. Jean Thornton telephoned around 5. Join Joe and me for dinner. Stone crabs! Of course! Had forgotten about my foot. Jumped out of bed to get ready. No way was I going to join Jean and Joe. Indescribable pain. Never would have been able to walk from the car to a restaurant. I called Jean and begged off. A couple of hours later, my stomach was growling. I had missed lunch. Dinner time was upon me. Meant I had to go downstairs. A mistake. Big time. I made it down and later up. Lucky I did not fall. The pain unbearable. I had visions of ending up in the hospital. This morning a different world. Swelling next to nothing. No pain. Enjoy your day!
