So I have a Life is Strange theory and I know I'm probably not saying anything that hasn't already been said before, but I feel the need to ramble about it because MMMMMMMMMMM. Major spoilers for Life is Strange and Life is Strange: Before the Storm.
My theory: Rachel had powers, too.
That's definitely been said before. I know I've seen people talk about it both on here and on other sites. When she kicks over the flaming trashcan, a HUGE gust of wind blows from behind her and turns this relatively small flame into a huge forest fire. The fire goes out when she disappears. I've seen people debate whether this is a power related to the wind, or fire itself, but I personally think that her power encompasses all of nature. Which leads me to the second part of my theory.
Not only does Rachel have powers, ones that are related to nature, but she quite literally is the storm that wipes out Arcadia Bay. And the deer that follows Max around through most of the first game, and the butterfly.
Now PLEASE hear me out on this.
Max Caulfield suddenly gains the ability to control time seemingly out of no where, conveniently right in time to save Chloe Price from being shot to her death in the Blackwell bathroom. She's also been getting premonitions of a catastrophic impending tornado seeming headed straight for Arcadia Bay. And, to top it all off, she sees a doe all around the town that seems to follow her and make direct eye contact with her on several occasions, that only disappears when her and Chloe finally locate Rachel's body. Do you wanna know where Max saw the doe in the junkyard, the very first time she's seen it outside of her foreboding nightmares about the storm? Right next to where Rachel is buried. What's in the bathroom that gives Max a convenient hiding place to witness Chloe's death so she can reverse it? The butterfly.
At each turn Max takes, there is some sort of natural occurrence or creature guiding her path, leading her not only to the clues that solve Rachel's disappearance, but also to saving Chloe's life time and time again. She's then faced with a choice: sacrifice her hometown, or sacrifice her best friend.
Despite being given a choice, it's my firm belief that Rachel wants us to sacrifice the town. The very first thing Max's power is used for is to save Chloe, which she was all but put on a leash and led to by numerous strange occurrences that all seem to link back to Rachel Amber. Rachel wants two things: for her story to be told, and for Chloe to be safe. And she knows the only way to ensure both of those things happen is through Max Caulfield, Chloe's long-term best friend since childhood. She also knows that Chloe and Arcadia Bay do not mix, and cannot coexist. If Chloe lives, Rachel will not let Arcadia Bay stand knowing all the pain this town has caused not only herself, but Chloe. If Chloe is dead, there's nothing for her to protect. And it's all up to Max to decide if Chloe is worth that sacrifice. She's gotten what she wanted for herself, for her story to be revealed. That's why the doe disappears after they find her corpse. The only thing that's left is ensuring nothing can ever hurt Chloe again, not even herself.
Once Arcadia Bay is in ruins and Chloe is safely out of town, the storm stops. Peace has been restored and Rachel can finally rest.
And, finally, my third part of this theory:
Rachel is the reason anyone in the continued Life is Strange series has powers in the first place.
Life is Strange 2 picks up a story that seems completely unconnected from the story of Rachel, Max and Chloe. It follows two completely different characters, Sean and Daniel, in a different state. Life is Strange: True Colors follows Alex Chen, also in another town. This seems like it couldn't possibly tie back to the original story but JUST YOU WAIT, DEAR READER. In LIS2, Sean and Brody quite literally have a heart to heart while overlooking the ruins of Arcadia Bay. In LIS:TC, Alex meets Steph Gingrich, a character who was featured in LIS:BTS and is canonically from Arcadia Bay. No matter how minor the connection is, each Life is Strange game up until this point has somehow referenced or tied back to the story of Rachel Amber, and by proxy the story of Max and Chloe.
Each character who gains powers have something in common, as well. They all have something, or someone, important to protect. The same way Rachel, and Max, protected Chloe. Rachel's influence is still felt throughout the United States, all because she wanted to protect all that was important to her and destroy anything that dared to underestimate her.
The true story of Life is Strange can only be told if you sacrifice Arcadia Bay, and that story didn't start with Max Caulfield. It started with Rachel Amber.
I was revisiting LIS2, when I noticed something sweet. In one of Sean’s last sketchbook entries, the one of his mother, Daniel and himself, he draws both himself and Daniel as shorter than Karen. It definitely feels like he was happy to have a parent figure in their lives again and it’s a cute detail! He deserved to feel like a kid again, after everyone treated him like an adult.
The hate towards Daniel and why it doesn't make any sense. [SPOILERS AHEAD]
The normalized hate towards Daniel is honestly one of the stupidest thing that the fandom has done. Forgetting completely that he was a literal child when the LIS2 events happened.
I'll start from the beggining to let you guys understand why Daniel had every right to have the attitude he had throught the game.
1. He not only lost his dad by being shot in front of him, he also saw how his big brother killed (accidently) his neighbor. He also find out about his dad's death days later by watching the TV, not even by his own brother, imagine the sadness, the disappointed, the feeling that your brother lied to you, desperation because your dad, the person you loved the most is dead and nobody told you about it.
2. He went days walking, again, he's a kid. He slept under a bridge in the cold and darkness of the night, without any barely food. He had to ask strangers for food, making himself feel ashamed of doing that but doing it anyways because his brother tells him to.
3. Saw his brother getting punched by an old guy because of his mexican roots and letting him locked in a room, leaving him alone outside in the forest, trying not to get caught by that man. (And then running away from that old man into the forest while raining.)
4. He had a puppy and got killed in the snow in front of him by a puma. He also started training his power (Telekinesis which is a really powerful thing to a little kid handle), in a way to liberate all his feelings from the previous events, he could kill the puma (depends of your choice).
5. Meeting his grandparents and having the neighbor as his best friend, only to a few days later, his friend dies, again, in front of him / or leaving him sad because Daniel lied to him (depends of your choices).
6. Running away with his brother and getting into a little community where he can be a bit more free and independent but also working with weed, a clear ambient that isn't for a kid. A few days later, they find out he has powers and one of them wants him to steal money from their boss, and once again he sees one of his friend getting killed (Or injured), his brother with a glass stuck on his eye and Daniel thought he was dead.
7. Running away without his brother to enter into a some sort of cult of prayers that mannipulate him. Daniel met his mom for the first time, sees his brother being desperate and begging for him to come back, they burn out the church and (maybe) kill the woman that mannipulate him.
8. After being with his mom in a desert, he has to leave to Mexico, where they caught them in the border, he got shot on the arm and killed some of the polices without hesistate. Then it depends of your ending, but those endings are traumatic for a 9 y/o.
Is completely understandable why Daniel had bad attitude, they took off his childhood, seeing people he loved dying in front of him, finding out that he has a really strong power. He never had the chance to process everything that was happening and that's the reason of his "bad attitude". He has a kid who had everything one day and to another second, he had nothing except his brother that knows that would do anything for him even if he treats him bad.
If you hate Daniel, have you played the game? He was 9 years old when all of those stuff happened, a literal kid that is learning things about himself and his surroundings.
Sorry but I can't stand Daniel haters, not after knowing everything he and Sean went through.
I finished playing it recently and I really only have one, really true way to describe the experience:
Like, holy shit is this game so much of that. So, so, so much emotional damage.
My quick thoughts:
How dare you introduce the good girl Mushroom, then allow her to get killed off without giving us the opportunity of saving her, Dontnod? That is some evil shit there. RIP Mushroom.
Sean Diaz is one of the best damn characters ever put in a video game, to the point that I 100% am never going to go for an ending where he is fucked over, either in death or in prison. He's just such a good character, trying his damn hardest to protect and take care of his little brother after the loss of their father.
Out of all the chapters, in general, that hurt, Chapter 4 is the biggest one. So much pain and emotional hurt there that it was killer.
OK, game, I know that I like going as queer as possible, but did I really have to side with Finn on doing something so incredibly stupid so that I can choose to romance him? Also, no option to bang Finn too on top of the kiss? Lame!
Dontnod threw in so much good stuff in here, both in the environment, setting, and story, that I can't help but call it a masterpiece. It blows the first Life is Strange out of the water so hard that I'm surprised that folks ignored this game over the others.
I'm sad that any new Life is Strange games will be done by Deck Nine instead of Dontnod, but this just made me want to see what other games that Dontnod has out there.
If you can get this game, get it. It is so good and will cause so much emotional wreckage, it can kill. But it is an amazing game and worth the price, even without a sale.
Best friends with one of them having time travel powers that work using photos and works together to solve crime, also one of them dies and the other goes back in time to bring them back not caring about how it will affect the timeline.
Sibling mass murdering criminals with tragic backstories where their one good parent gets killed because of a neighbor harassing them, also one of them has powers and the other dies.
I’m replaying Life is Strange and I’m thinking about that Impossible choice you have to make at the end and since my brain is pure Byler brainrot recently, was wondering if either Mike or Will would be able that choice.
