Listen To Your Hart Introduction
Getting caught hacking into an organisation that prides itself on secrecy probably wasn’t Lily’s best idea, even if in her eyes there was a good reason for it. She’d heard rumours of people being recruited after that kind of thing, but she never expected it to come true for her. Only after joining did she realise that perhaps that wasn’t exactly the thing she’d needed to do. But, while she loves being part of the tech team, part of her longs to be doing something more. To become an agent even if somebody blocks her way every time.
Being recruited for the Kingsman tests wasn’t something that had ever been on Eggsy’s radar; even after his meeting with Harry, he wondered if perhaps the whole thing hadn’t been a dream. And yet, as he starts the training with other candidates, Eggsy realises that perhaps actually getting the coveted place with Kingsman wouldn’t be so bad. Sure, he might miss some of the other candidates come the end, but he’d be doing something good. Something that would make his parents proud and help him make sure his family was safe. And that was important.

‘Why’d you do it?’ Eggsy’s voice was barely more than a whisper in the darkness, and yet I found myself shifting in the bed, trying to sit straighter.
He rested a cautiously gentle hand on my shoulder briefly. I stopped fidgeting as he took up the plastic seat beside my bed.
‘My partner was in danger,’ I remind him, grateful for the dim lighting. At least this way he won’t see my pulse beating a tattoo against my throat. ‘I had to do something.’
‘Not jump right into the fucking danger, Lil.’ His voice is harsh, and he forces himself to take a shallow breath. I hear it stutter slightly, but force myself not to apologise. I was merely doing my job. If I could’ve avoided injury, I would’ve.
‘You could’ve died.’
‘So could you,’ I remind him. ‘But neither of us did.’
Silence settled between us, for once awkwardly uncomfortable. We both know the other has a point, and yet neither of us wants to admit to it. Because the truth is hard, and the consequences of our actions suddenly mean so much more.
‘Perhaps this was a bad idea,’ he murmurs.
‘Which bit, exactly?’ I ask, hearing the defensive edge to my voice. I don’t mean to let it get to me, but after everything it’s impossible not to let emotion play some part in all this. ‘Letting me come along? Coming to see me? … Starting something?’
‘No,’ he assures me hastily, taking my hand carefully. ‘I ain’t ever gonna regret that.’ He speaks with such vehemence it’s almost impossible to question it. ‘Just maybe I should’ve waited until after we’d saved the world.’
‘World’s always gonna need saving,’ I remind him softly.
He gives my hand a squeeze. ‘You’re part of the world too though, Lillian Robinson.’
Despite the darkness, I shoot him a small smile I hope he can actually see. Maybe this thing was the worst decision we made, but I can’t say I regret it, and by the sounds of it, Eggsy doesn’t either.

It's the same show.
(Could Guillermo and Colin be swapped around? Yes. The only reason I put Colin as Marilyn was because he's totally different from the rest. Yes, Guillermo is a human but for the majority of the time, he wanted to be a vampire so this is what I came up with.)

ranking people i've been told i look like cuz i'm a narcissist 😋😋 except it's only the positive ones !!!!!!!!
lily collins: by far the one i get the most like ive heard it from SEVERAL different people. i can see it but tbh its mainly cuz we have the same eyebrows. idk 7/10 cuz i think she's pretty but also it's not fun having both family members and strangers compare u to emily in paris 💀
isabelle adjani: this is like the one i personally see the most (like if it's a REALLY good day for me) and its totally an ego boost cuz she's gorgeous and possession (1981) is one of my fave movies. the first time i got it was from that starsbyface website in like 2022 and i posted it to my cf story and people were all like "no i totally see it" so 9/10 a win is a win
lana del rey: we don't look alike whatsoever. i mean don't get me wrong i wish i looked like her but we have virtually none of the same features. ive been compared to her in the honeymoon/lust for life era three times now (one of them being a friend the other two were ppl i had classes with) and like i know for the fact the only reason i get those comparisons is cuz we're both pale white chicks with long brown hair. still a 10/10 cuz even though i know it's not accurate it always makes me feel like hot shit.
april ludgate: NOT aubrey plaza. have been compared to her multiple times because we have the same voice (monotone hot girl syndrome) 5/10 cuz im not sure whether or not it's supposed to be a compliment
samantha robinson: i got this one time from a girl vaping in the bathroom at school and i hold it so close to my heart. again def a case of "pale skin/dark brown hair= camryn" but i don't even care cuz im so in love with elaine parks (and if u squint real hard from afar u actually can see it a little) 100/10
anyways i have serious trouble actually recognizing what i look like so this could all be complete bullshit (mutuals that have seen my face please gimme feedback in the comments i beg) but like whatever now u guys can picture one of them whenever u read my posts 💋💋

MONA LISA AND THE BLOOD MOON (2021): This heady, disjointed supernatural drama-thriller is I guess Ana Lily Amirpour's take on the YA modern fantasy genre: A previously near-catatonic young woman called Mona Lisa Lee (Jun Jong-Seo), imprisoned for 12 years in a New Orleans asylum, escapes after discovering that she has the power to psychically control the minds of others. Lost in a world she barely understands, Mona falls in with a hard-bitten stripper named Bonnie (Kate Hudson), who immediately realizes she can use Mona's power for scamming and petty crime, and befriends Bonnie's 10-year-old metalhead son Charlie (Evan Whitten) while being pursued by a cop named Harold (Craig Robinson), who knows what Mona can do because she previously forced him to shoot himself in the leg.
Less deliberately sketchy than Amirpour's previous features (characters even have names most of the time!), MONA LISA is still awfully thin on plot, relying more on mood, atmosphere, and the protagonist's longing to be somewhere other than she's been; its vivid strangeness is kind of compelling, although at points the lack of direction leaves it feeling threadbare.
Of the central characters, Charlie is well-drawn, a latchkey kid who's had to develop his own strategies for giving himself the emotional regulation his mother doesn't provide, but Mona's idiot savant blankness is sometimes uncomfortable (although Jun does as well as she can with a difficult part), and the story is meaner about Bonnie than I think was really called for. Even more than in the 2016 THE BAD BATCH, I was uneasy with the film's treatment of its Black characters — none of them are killed this time, but most get battered and humiliated for comic relief — which is starting to seem like a problem for Amirpour. CONTAINS LESBIANS? After seeing Bonnie dance, Mona says she's pretty, but it's otherwise pretty hetero. VERDICT: If you catch it in the right mood, you may dig its seriocomic fever-dream vibe, but its scattershot story and uncomfortable character choices sometimes frustrate.

Book Notes: Belles of London Series
Tumblr media
Some of you may have noticed a new addition to our store — Island Books now has a dedicated romance section and I couldn't be happier. Cheerful covers in bright colors, containing stories where all kinds of people find their HEA (happy ever after) or HFN (happy for now). As a person who decidedly prefers books to end on a happy (or at least hopeful) note, romances are a genre I can count on. And often an author will write a series that lets you watch everyone out of a friend group find love, allowing me to linger in a delightful fictional world.
One series that I just discovered, a little late to the party, is Belles of London by Mimi Matthews. Lil recommended the first book, The Siren of Sussex, a few years ago, and I was finally able to pick it up. I barely needed Cindy’s "first page test" to be hooked and quickly finished it. I then raced through the next two books, The Belle of Belgrave Square and The Lily of Ludgate Hill, in this planned four book series. (The fourth being The Muse of Maiden Lane, coming out 11/19/24).
Tumblr media
Set in Victorian England, all the heroines are equestriennes, and finding the marriage mart challenging for a variety of reasons. The Siren of Sussex features Evelyn Maltravers, the second daughter of an impoverished family. After her older sister embroiled herself in scandal instead of making the advantageous marriage she was supposed to, Evelyn is tasked with snaring herself a wealthy husband and saving her family. But she knows her best chance to catch the eye of eligible noblemen is not in the ballroom but on the back of her horse, a place she always feels confident. And to really make an impression, she needs the most fashionable riding habits she can afford.
Enter Ahmad Malik, who only needs the right influential woman of the ton to wear his designs to help him finally realize his dream of owning his own dressmaker's establishment. When Evelyn commissions him to make her riding habits, he decides to take her as his muse and dress her for the season. It's not long before fitting sessions blossom into something more, but Evelyn is bound by financial constraints. And Ahmad is reluctant to entangle his own heart with a woman society says he could never have. The path of true love never did run smooth!
I loved the way Mimi Matthews took on the challenges of an interracial couple with significant class differences as the heart of her romance. And I also loved every lushly described detail of the gorgeous clothes Ahmad designs for Evelyn. Throughout The Siren of Sussex, enough teasers are dropped for the other heroines of her series (and their prospective beaus) that I was eager to continue on and see what romances lay in store for them. Matthews builds romantic tension masterfully and employs a dual point-of-view so the reader can appreciate the inner journeys of both leads.
Pick up The Siren of Sussex if a swoony Victorian historical romance series sounds like the escape read you need right now. Or come check out our new romance section and see what else catches your eye!

The chill had set in faster than anyone expected. The snow flakes covered every surface with a thick white blanket, engulfing everything in an icy cell for the next three months. Alice stared blankly at the road ahead, thin black sticks went up and down in front of her as they cleaned any stray snow that might block the woman’s vision. Many cars passed her by, which was expected. Many people decided to spend their winters elsewhere, rather than the quaint town of Willowcreek, Vermont. Winter got really harsh around these parts, since they were surrounded by mountains.
Alice hadn’t been there in ages, not since she moved away from college. The mountain looked almost luminescent in the fainting light of the dull sun. Alice had lived a relatively normal life in New York until everything went down hill. She quit her job after a nervous breakdown, perpetuated by the voices of the dead that would just not leave her be. The medium had learned to tune them out, but sometimes ever that wasn’t enough. Alice soon arrived, being greeted by a sign that read ‘Welcome to Willowcreek!’. Alice had already rented a place to stay, it was a cabin on the far end of the town. Once she exited the car, she was met with pure silence. The whistling of the wind was the only thing that broke it. Out of the corner of her eye, Alice saw something moving. Brown eyes trailed over to the culprit, and it was a child. A little girl. As Alice tried to get a better look, the girl vanished behind a tree. “I can’t deal with this now...”
The first thing Alice noticed was how hungry she was. Her eyes searched for a familiar diner, and surely enough Mary’s diner was still up and running. Mary Deveraux was a lovely old woman, who fed Alice nearly everyday when her father and brother abandoned her. Alice was sad to hear of her passing the year prior, and felt guilt over not coming back when that happened. The brunette made her way there, the familiar ringing of the bell made her heart throb. “Welcome to Mary’s! What can I get you?” A young man greeted, Alice read over the name tag that said Elliot. “I’ll have the chicken sandwich and a coke, please.”
