River of Grass (1995, dir. Kelly Reichardt) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
I found River of Grass to be a little less impactful than Old Joy was, the 2 leads in this one weren't nearly as sympathetic, but overall I still enjoyed it. Both films dive into the lives of characters who, at some level (a bit more directly in this film), want to escape their situation. Both are films about feeling stuck in life and not truly knowing where to go or what to do or how to do it. I appreciate River of Grass' take on it, but there was something about the serenity hidden in the mundanity of Old Joy that just hit a little more strongly.
Score: 7/10
Available on DVD & Blu-ray through Oscilloscope Laboratories.
It was also cool to see an incredibly young Larry Fessenden, who at this point in his career is recognized by horror fans the world over, in a very decidedly not horror film.

Per @aroaessidhe: Little Thieves, The Kindred, The Summer of Bitter and Sweet, Gender Queer, (and I think The Bone Season?) have ace or demisexual MCs, not aromantic. also, a lot of the rest are side characters, not main characters.
Thank you, genuinely, so much, for this correction. I'm very sorry for the mistake. I create these guides between work assignments (I work from home, around the clock, trying to make ends meet in this mess of an economy) and didn't do my due diligence in double-checking every book. I think this started as an aro/ace list I was compiling and I tried to separate it into two guides. I apologize for the discrepancy vehemently and will strive to do better in the future. Thank you for catching my error.

It had to rain. The friends and family of Lisa Levy placed her body in the ground Tuesday, and strained to understand why a girl so young, so bright, so full of life, had to die at the hands of a murderer. THE GLOOMY gray morning only thickened the feelings of sorrow, as almost 200 persons ringed the canopied gravesite in Largo to pray and cry and rememler. "She will stay in our hearts forever, young and fresh as springtime." The words came from Rabbi Jacob Luski as he tried to comfort Lisa's grieving mother, father and brother during a crowded funeral in Pinellas Park "Tears are being shed, but memory is beginning," the soft-bearded Luski said.
"Lisa was a very determined young lady, lovable . . . determined in all ways of life." The Sunday before, as the 20-year-old Florida State University ( FSU) student slept in her Tallahassee sorority house, she was clubbed and strangled by a killer still at large. A second St.Petersburg girl was murdered, and three other young women were beaten before the attacker fled into the darkness, leaving at best a faint and scattered trail for police to follow. "IT WAS A tragedy, a stunning blow," the rabbi said. But he urged the mourners, "Do not judge your fellow man until you find yourself in his circumstances." Then he asked God to "teach us how to accept this bitter loss." Throughout the services, police, photographers and television cameramen milled in the background. The face of Lisa's mother, Henny Levy, looked blank and too numb for tears. Her divorced husband Sam, who lives in Sarasota, wore a gray suit and the traditional black yarmulke syna gogue cap.
Lisa's brother Fred, stationed in Maine with the U.S. Air Force, was gripped by emotions. As he prepared to shovel a spade of dirt on top of Lisa's pine coffin, he threatened to break a photographer's camera if he continued snapping pictures. AFTER THE BURIAL about 25 Chi Omega sisters from FSU and the University of South Florida joined hands in a circle and sang the sorority song Shades in tribute to Lisa's memory. Tear tracks glistened down the cheeks of Joanne Schultz, 20, as she and her husband walked in the drizzle after the funeral.
Both had been friends of Lisa during their high school years. "I knew her since siith grade," Mrs. Schultz said. At Dixie Hollins High School, "I was a cheerleader and she was a baton-twirling majorette. I'll always remember her smiling.
I don't want to remember any sad things. "He (the killer) just must have gone crazy. Yeah, I'm bitter. They say it happens to good people, and it happened to one of them " REPRESENTING FSl' was Stephen B. McClellan, the vice president for university relations. He also will attend funeral services at 2 p.m. today for the other murdered girl, Margaret Bowman, 21, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. 1200Snell Isle Blvd.

The Murder of Kimberly Leach
Tumblr media
Kimberly Diane Leach was a 12-year-old schoolgirl, she was in the seventh grade. Kimberly, Kim to her friends, was described as a shy girl who worked hard at school.
On 8th February 1978, Kimberly was excited as her mother had said that afternoon she would take Kimberly shopping for a dress to wear to the upcoming Valentine’s ball. She arrived at school and ate doughnuts with her friend and went to her homeroom before leaving to go to her first class, PE. While in the homeroom Kimberly forgot her purse so went back to get it, she returned to the homeroom, picked up the purse and left, making her way back across campus- she never made it back to her lesson. Kimberly’s teacher assumed Kimberly had just gone to her second class and gave her books to her friend to put in her locker. Kimberly failed to show up at any of her classes that day, and her teachers grew worried and began searching for her. By 5pm when there was still no sign of Kimberly, the police were called.
Kimberly’s friends knew something was wrong immediately, they described how Kimberly never skipped class and was a shy girl who was unlikely to speak to strangers or go anywhere on her own. A witness had seen a girl walking towards a white van with a man he had assumed was her father, the man had brown hair and was clean-shaven and the girl matched Kimberly’s description down to the number on her sports jersey, the girl had looked unhappy but was not resisting. A schoolchild had also seen a slim man in his mid-thirties with brown hair standing near the school. Over 65 witnesses had seen this man in the vicinity of the school Kimberly attended.
In April 1978, about 2 months after Kimberly had gone missing her body was found in a pig shed wooded area, she had been raped and had lacerations to her neck.
Before Kimberly was found, Ted Bundy, a notorious serial killer and wanted fugitive was found when pulled over for a traffic violation. He had recently escaped from prison and was wanted for a string of recent murders of young women. Officers questioned him about Kimberly’s disappearance which he initially denied despite overwhelming evidence including fibres from the jacket he was wearing when arrested being found on her body.
In 1980, Bundy went on trial for the kidnap and murder of Kimberly Leach. He had previously been convicted for the murders of two sorority girls, Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman, in the infamous Chi Omega attacks. During the trial for Kimberly’s murder, Bundy acted as his own council and asked Carole Ann Boone to marry him. He was found guilty and Bundy received a third death sentence for the murder of Kimberly Leach.
On 24th January 1989, Bundy was executed by electric chair at Florida State Prison. It is believed that Kimberly was his last victim.

Are there any widow romances?
Yes! Here are my HR recs. Also, I can't help but feel like I'm missing something so if anyone has anything else, lmk!
The Duchess in His Bed by Lorraine Heath: aka "How To Con A Hottie Club Owner Into Getting You Pregnant For Dubious Purposes" and I do admire Selena for her Schemes no matter how fucked they are.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath: I really need to reread this one but Jack Dodger was a wild wild man and Olivia is very prim and proper so it's your classic "what happens when fire and ice meet" sitch.
Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas: This is a little warmer, very found-family-esque, but Lisa doesn't skimp on the sex obvi. There's a bathing scene in which he advises her to turn away or she'll "get a big eyeful of Ravanel" and I think about that sometimes.
Also, if you want a detailed description on actual estate issues (and not Anthony B signing papers and getting all stressed about it between jaunts with his mistresses), this is your book.
Devil in Disguise by Lisa Kleypas: My key takeaway is that Merritt truly is Lillian Bowman's daughter with her galaxy-brain moments, and Keir truly does live up to his progenitor. Also, he's like, a genuinely stand-up dude. Will admit to being a secret romantic before performing the rare HR sixty-nine.
When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn: Best Bridgerton book by far, and I'd say a large part of it is due to Francesca being a widow.

Lisa Montgomery and Bobbie Jo Stinnett were two women from two completely different worlds until one day, their lives collided. This collision would lead to one of the most graphic and disturbing murder cases Missouri had ever seen. Lisa Montgomery was a 36-year-old woman from Melvern, Kansas. She often pretended that she was pregnant to gain advantage in her interpersonal relationships. In 2004, she told her friends, family, and husband that she was expecting a baby. She even told her ex-husband, Carl Bowman.
However, in 1990, Lisa had underwent a tubal ligation and was unable to have any more children. Due to her repeated lies and deceptions, Carl threatened to expose her lies and gain custody of their two teenage children. Nevertheless, Lisa continued to claim that she was pregnant. The whole world would soon come to discover why.
One afternoon while browsing the internet in late 2004, Lisa came across a website which was run by 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett, a dog breeder who sold dogs from her home in Skidmore, around 120 miles away from Melvern. Bobbie had been a high-school cheerleader and an honours student who was in the process of building a placid nuclear life with her childhood sweetheart. Bobbie’s website included a photograph of her which clearly showed that she was heavily pregnant. Lisa contacted Bobbie via a rat terrier chat room. She posted a message for Bobbie which read: “Please get in touch with me soon as we are considering the purchase of one of your puppies.” Bobbie replied to Lisa and the two swapped email addresses. Lisa informed Bobbie that she too was expecting a baby and Bobbie sent her directions to her house. The email from Bobbie read in part: “Great chatting with you on messenger. And I do look forward to chatting with you tomorrow AM.” The two had arranged to meet at Bobbie’s house where Lisa said that she would be purchasing one of her dogs. The following morning, on the 16th of December, 2004, Lisa showed up at Bobbie’s door.
Unbeknownst to Bobbie, Lisa wasn’t there to purchase a dog, she had something much more sinister in mind.....

Updated stream list
I've been getting a lot of questions/requests regarding possible streams and thought it might be helpful to catalog everything we've watched so far! I'll keep it pinned and updated moving forward.
Longtime crowd favorites (streamed at least three times) are marked with a single asterisk.
Why isn’t [specific actor/video] on this list?
The video is currently marked not for trade.
We haven’t gotten to it yet.
The footage does not exist or is too incomplete.
It isn't on a platform I can stream it from.
There's something particularly off-putting about the video or actor.
How can I get a copy of a video listed here?
There's a list of publicly available bootlegs here, and there are many other adaptations on the Phantom Retrospective channel. Otherwise, contact @glassprism (or another trader) for a possible trade, or check her website for info on which master(s) to contact.
For general stream info, please see the Saturday Streams FAQ.
