Kliph Nesteroff: There was a sequel to the blaxploitation movie Black Caesar called Hell Up in Harlem. Both were directed by Larry Cohen for American International Pictures and they came out one after the other. You and James Brown did the soundtrack to the first film, but not the second. Edwin Starr from Motown did music for the second film. How come...?
Fred Wesley: Yeah, yeah. That’s a good story. We finished the movie music. James Brown told me to take it out to California. We were in Augusta when we finished it. We packaged it up. It was on a two-track tape and I took it to Larry Cohen. Larry listened to it and he shook his head. He said, “This ain’t funky. It’s not funky enough.” I said, “What?” It was very funky. He didn’t know funk from stunk. Anyway, I said, “Okay, well, you tell James Brown it's not funky enough. I’m not going to tell him it's not funky enough.” Phoned James Brown up, “I said Larry Cohen says it ain’t funky enough.” And I handed the phone to Larry Cohen. Larry turned about four shades of red and blue. He was saying, “Yeah, but… I mean… yeah, but… I… but I…” He handed the phone back to me. You could hear over the phone, “[screaming][growling].” I picked it up, took it back to Augusta, Georgia, and James Brown put the music out. It turned out to be The Payback – his funkiest album and the only million seller James Brown ever had.
Kliph Nesteroff: You were hired to do the music for Hell Up in Harlem and the music was turned down.
Fred Wesley: Yes. We did it. We did all the music! Larry Cohen said it was not funky enough (laughs).

Dünyada yalnızca 14 milyon Yahudi var;
~Amerika'da 7 milyon,

1907 – Billy De Wolfe, American actor, born William Jones (d.1974); A character actor, he was active in films from the mid-1940s until his death and was a good friend of Doris Day. He was never married, and is generally believed to have been a homosexual.
He signed with Paramount Pictures in 1943 and became a reliable comedian. His pencil-mustached and often pompous character contrasted humorously with the films' romantic leads. His best-known role of his Paramount tenure is probably the ham actor turned silent-movie villain in the 1947 fictionalized Pearl White biography The Perils of Pauline.
De Wolfe became known for his portrayal of fussy, petty men ("Never touch!," he would say imperiously whenever someone accosted him physically). A New York Times review of his 1948 film Isn't It Romantic? strongly criticized the way the other actors' material limited their performances, contrasting their performances with his: "But Mr. De Wolfe is nothing daunted. He rips up the place with great delight. The material is at his mercy. Likewise the scenery. And he chews it to bits."
He appeared regularly in guest roles on television, including the first two episodes of NBC's The Imogene Coca Show. He reappeared as Mr. Jarvis on CBS's The Doris Day Show, and co-starred with Larry Storch in a short-lived TV sitcom, The Queen and I. He often appeared on talk shows and in TV commercials, doing his "Mrs. Murgatroyd" drag routine. Wearing a hat and a shawl (but still sporting his mustache!), DeWolfe (as old maid "Phoebe Murgatroyd") would claim to be an expert on romance, and answered questions from the lovelorn.
Generations of TV viewers know Billy DeWolfe only by his voice: his is the voice of the frustrated magician in the Christmas perennial Frosty the Snowman. DeWolfe gave the role his usual fussy diction: "Mess-y, mess-y, mess-y! Bus-y, bus-y, bus-y!"

1931 – Charles Higham (d.2012) was an English author, editor and poet. Higham was a recipient of the Prix des Créateurs in 1978 and of the Académie Française and the Poetry Society of London Prize. He is best remembered as the writer of sensationalist biographies, especially Errol Flynn: The Untold Story.
Born in London, Higham was the son of MP and advertising mogul Sir Charles Higham. The younger Higham published two early books of verse in England, before moving to Sydney, Australia in 1954, where at 23 he became a prominent book and film critic. He became literary editor of The Bulletin, the country's leading weekly, in 1964, and published three more collections of verse.
Higham was named Regents Professor by the University of California, an honor accorded to leading literary figures in foreign countries, and while at UC Santa Cruz he discovered the lost footage of It's All True, Orson Welles's uncompleted Latin American triptych. In The Films of Orson Welles (1970) and in Orson Welles: The Rise and Fall of an American Genius (1985), he argued that Welles suffered from a "fear of completion" that led him to abandon projects when they were nearly finished because he could not bear to complete them. Friends of Welles, in particular Peter Bogdanovich, criticised this thesis. Newsweek devoted a full-page spread to Higham as a film detective and The New York Times engaged him as its Hollywood feature writer for the Sunday theatre Section.
Higham's first best seller was Kate (1975), the first authorised biography of Katharine Hepburn. This success was followed by Bette, the Life of Bette Davis, a biography of Lucille Ball, and The Duchess of Windsor (1988, 2005). His book Howard Hughes became the basis of Martin Scorsese's film The Aviator (2004). In this work "his assertions that Hughes had a romance with Cary Grant, was centrally involved in Watergate, offering material assistance to some of the conspirators, and quite possibly died of AIDS all raised eyebrows in the news media."
In 1980, Higham's "most sensational work", Errol Flynn: The Untold Story appeared. In this work he alleged that Errol Flynn was a bisexual fascist sympathiser who spied for the Nazis before and during World War II and had affairs with Tyrone Power, Howard Hughes, and Truman Capote. Tony Thomas, in Errol Flynn: The Spy Who Never Was (1990) and Buster Wiles in My Days With Errol Flynn: The Autobiography of a Stuntman (1988) attacked Higham's claims as fabrications, a claim substantiated by viewing the F.B.I. documents, which were altered - rather than quoted verbatim - by Higham.
In his autobiography Higham wrote of his molestation by his stepmother and reveals his 1952 marriage despite his growing awareness of his homosexuality. He and his wife Norine Lillian Cecil stayed great friends although she later adopted a lesbian lifestyle. Higham lived with his partner Richard V. Palafox, a nurse, until Palafox's death in 2010, in Los Angeles. Higham died on 21 April 2012 in Los Angeles.

1932 – Duane Michals is an American photographer. Largely self-taught, his work is noted for its innovation and artistry. Michals' style often features photo-sequences and the incorporation of text to examine emotion and philosophy, resulting in a unique body of work.
In 1958 while on a holiday in the USSR he discovered an interest in photography. The photographs he made during this trip became his first exhibition held in 1963 at the Underground Gallery in New York City. Duane Michals settled in New York in the late 1950s and became known as a commercial and fashion photographer.
For a number of years, Michals worked in commercial photography, working for Esquire and Mademoiselle, and he covered the filming of The Great Gatsby for Vogue (1974). He did not have a studio. Instead, he took portraits of people in their environment, which was a contrast to the method of other photographers at the time, such as Avedon and Irving Penn. In 1968 Michals was hired by the government of Mexico to photograph the 1968 Olympic Games. In 1970 his works were shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
His early work became well known for its insistent, and often humorous, use of the narrative series. Many such works actually incorporated handwritten text onto the images. Thematically, Michals has a recurrent fascination with making tangible the intangible realm of love, death, dreams, and wishes. His works deal with human sexuality, both straight and gay, but always in a charmingly moving and innocent manner.
Though he has not been involved in gay civil rights, his photography has addressed gay themes. As early as 1970, Michals plotted the psychic terrain of urban gay life with his series Chance Meeting, in which two men are seen to cruise each other within the sharply receding space of an alley that communicates both the encounter's intensity and also its potential for alienation.
Tumblr media
"Chance Meeting"
The Unfortunate Man (1978) allegorizes the crippling personal effects of gay criminalization, combining photographic image and coarsely handwritten text in what would become Michals's distinctive style.
His frequent incorporation of textual elements is not only Michals's accounting for reality beyond the visible world, but also his unassuming participation in the gay literary tradition that occasioned two books of photographic homages: Homage to Cavafy (1978) and Salute, Walt Whitman (1996). (Among Michals's two dozen books and catalogues, there is also a tribute to René Magritte, with whom Michals shared a fondness for sophisticated visual humor.)
With the publication of his illustrations of ten homoerotic poems by Constantine Cavafy, Michals identified himself publicly as gay, and thereafter one finds in his works images of tremendous tenderness between men, for example, Just to Light His Cigarette Was a Pleasure (1978) and How Nice to Watch You Take a Bath (1986).
In 1976 Michals received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Michals also produced the art for The Police album Synchronicity in 1983, and Richard Barone's Clouds Over Eden album in 1993.
Michals has been in a relationship with his partner for 50 years. Though he has not been involved in gay civil rights, his photography has regularly addressed gay themes and quietly added to the storehouse of twentieth-century gay imagery.

1952 – Daniel David Moses is a First Nations poet and playwright from Canada.
Moses, of Delaware descent on his father's side and Tuscarora descent on his mother's, was born in Ohsweken, Ontario, and raised on a farm on the Six Nations of the Grand River near Brantford, Ontario, Canada. In 2003, Moses joined the department of drama at Queen's University as an assistant professor. In 2019, he was appointed Professor Emeritus by Queen's University, Kingston, Canada.
He has worked as an independent artist since 1979 as a poet, playwright, dramaturge, editor, essayist, teacher, and writer-in-residence with institutions as varied as Theatre Passe Muraille, the Banff Centre for the Arts, Theatre Kingston, the University of British Columbia, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Windsor, the University of Toronto, the Sage Hill Writing Experience, McMaster University and Concordia University.
He is openly gay, and also claims "brothers and sisters among Two-Spirit people." Some of his works, therefore, reflect upon and explore the complexities of Native Two-Spirit or Queer identities

1954 – John Travolta is an American actor, dancer, and singer. There have been continuous claims that he is gay, some of these claims even leading to lawsuits.
Travolta first became known in the 1970s, after appearing on the television series Welcome Back, Kotter and starring in the box office successes Saturday Night Fever and Grease. Travolta's acting career declined through the 1980s.His career enjoyed a resurgence in the 1990s with his role in Pulp Fiction, and he has since continued starring in more recent films such as Face/Off, Swordfish, and Wild Hogs. Travolta was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction. He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his performance in Get Shorty. In 2014, he has received the IIFA Award for Outstanding Achievement in International Cinema at the 15th IIFA Awards held at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, in the United States.
Travolta married actress Kelly Preston in 1991. The couple had a son, Jett. In 2009, Jett died while on a Christmas vacation in The Bahamas. Their daughter, Ella Bleu, was born in 2000 and a third child, a son named Benjamin, was born in 2010 in Florida. Travolta and Preston have regularly attended marriage counseling; Travolta has stated that therapy has helped the marriage.
Travolta has been a practitioner of Scientology since 1975 when he was given the book Dianetics while filming the movie The Devil's Rain in Durango, Mexico. After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he joining other celebrities in helping with the relief efforts, Travolta flew his 707 full of supplies, doctors, and Scientologist Volunteer Ministers into the disaster area.
In 2012, Fabian Zanzi, a former employee of Royal Caribbean Cruises, accused the "Grease" star of coming onto him aboard a ship in 2009. "Travolta forced his naked person and his erect penis against plaintiff's person causing plaintiff to experience pain, shock, embarrassment, distress and fear," the complaint filed in federal court in Los Angeles said. Later, lawyers for Zanzi and Travolta signed documents dismissing the action, which prevented Zanzi from refiling.
In May 2012, an anonymous masseur filed a lawsuit against Travolta citing claims of sexual assault and battery. A lawyer for Travolta said that the allegations were "complete fiction and fabrication" and someone wanting their 15 minutes of fame. Travolta's counsel also stated that his client would be able to prove that he was not in California on the day in question and asserted that Travolta would "sue the attorney and Plaintiff for malicious prosecution" after getting the case thrown out. A second masseur later joined the lawsuit making similar claims. Both lawsuits were subsequently dropped by the complainants and dismissed without prejudice.
In September 2014, Travolta denied claims made in January 2014 by his former pilot, Douglas Gotterba, that they had shared a sexual relationship while working for Travolta's aircraft company, Alto, for six years before leaving voluntarily in 1987. Gotterba argued that he was not bound by any confidentiality agreement during his term in the position.

1956 – John R. Stowe, a spiritual teacher, cofounder of Gay Spirit Visions, and founder of EarthFriends, was born. He lived a closeted gay existence until 1979, when he began a quest to discover what it meant to live as a gay man. As with many gay men, much of that struggle meant dealing with negative self images acquired from growing up in a world that does not accept homosexuality.
John began his studies of the living world rather traditionally, majoring in biological sciences and earning an M.S. degree in Biology/Ecology that led to a teaching position in a small university near Atlanta.
After several years of teaching - and a couple more spent traveling through Mexico, Central America, and Europe - he embarked on a study of natural healing. In 1981, John received certification from the Atlanta School of Massage as a Licensed Massage Therapist - having taught there concurrently.
After coming out, he found employment as a bodyworker/ masseur and pursued his spiritual and self-understanding quest through a spectrum of alternative spiritual options from the gay-informed Christianity of Episcopal priest Malcolm Boyd to channeller Andrew Ramer. He found bodywork as one tool that assisted the exploration of the inner self. He soon emerged as a spiritual teacher serving the gay community primarily in the Atlanta, Georgia, area.
In 1990, Stowe joined with a small group of friends who had pursued similar spiritual journeys, including Ramer, to found Gay Spirit Visions. The primary program of Gay Spirit Visions is an annual conference where gay men gather to explore alternative spiritual options. The work of the group provided the atmosphere for him to develop his book, Gay Spirit Warrior (1999). Gay Spirit Warrior was written to assist men begin an inner journey and start to experience the reality of the self, both positive and negative.
In 1984, Stowe had discovered flower essences, substances distilled from flowers and other plants by a particular method first discovered by Edward Bach, a British physician. Stowe began to make his own flower essences from flowers found in the Southeastern United States and use them in his bodywork sessions. In the mid-1980s he founded EarthFriends to manufacture and sell the essences he had developed. One line of products, Exploring Gayspirit Oils, is marketed primarily to gay men.

Today's Gay Wisdom:
Audre Lorde
[{(o)}]|[{(o)}]|[{(o)}]|[{(o)}]| [{(o)}]|[{(o)}]
When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.~ Audre Lorde, The Cancer Journals
Each time you love, love as deeply as if it were forever / Only, nothing is eternal. ~ Audre Lorde, Undersong
I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood. That the speaking profits me, beyond any other effect. ~ Audre Lorde, from the essay "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action", in Sister Outsider
Your silence will not protect you. ~ Audre Lorde from the essay "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action", in Sister Outsider
I am who I am, doing what I came to do, acting upon you like a drug or chisel or remind you of your me-ness as I discover you in myself. ~ Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider
Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action. Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought. The farthest horizons of our hopes and fears are cobbled by our poems, carved from the rock experiences of our daily lives. ~ Audre Lorde
I have always wanted to be both man and woman, to incorporate the strongest and richest parts of my mother and father within/into me -- to share valleys and mountains upon my body the way the earth does in hills and peaks. ~ Audre Lorde, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name

From The Distillery to Eternity: A Tale of Lost Recording Tapes, Found on eBay
Red Aunts / Two Tears guitarist/singer Kerry Smith was just putzing around eBay when she saw a tape she made 20+ years ago which was being sold by some rando -- along with lots of tapes by other regional L.A. trash rock acts. A facebook post about it, copious comments, and a surprise good samaritan followed.

Tumblr media
As we all regularly ponder what the hell social media is good for, a major piece of proof for the answer of “Nothing” are the comments sections on Facebook. The vitriol and vague “arguments” that can ensue (should you actually still use Facebook) get stupid and depressing very quickly.
But for every 100 like that, there are posts that actually conjure up a stable discussion, interesting connections, and maybe even some useful info.
Case in point, a recent post from Kerry Smith – Red Aunts and Two Tears guitarist/singer and all-around hilarious, life-affirming gal.
Essentially, she came across an eBay listing that was selling off a studio reel tape of an original master recording she made in 2000. After Kerry’s FB post, a number of people clicked on the link and a few realized their own tapes or someone they knew were also listed for sale.
I contacted Kerry about the situation:
“I recorded a bunch of songs there hoping to put them out as the first Two Tears record," said Kerry. "Lesley (Ishino, Red Aunts) and Danny Hole (Necessary Evils) played some drums, and I played everything else. I forgot about this all until this post was brought to my attention, and I feel sad, angry, violated, ripped off. I demo’d them all on my 4-track and worked hard in that studio. I paid for it all myself, no label help. Lots of people offered to buy them for me, and someone thought they were doing a good deed and bought it, though I had the post taken down. I don’t know why it bothers me so much, until Gar wrote from SD saying it’s an intimate and personal experience, and he said do you feel like you’ve been audio art raped? And I do."
---------------------------------------
One of the commenters on Kerry’s post was Larry Hardy – head of In The Red Records, the legendary garage rock indie label from L.A. He added a few shocked comments, which led to a comment thread discussion of legality, ownership, old stories, etc.
Given how many bands Hardy has worked with and albums he's released, I thought he’d be one to dig into this strange, ephemeral side of life as a recording musician…
Here's a Two Tears song from that era, though not recorded at The Distillery:
So how did you first hear about this? I assume you saw Kerry's post…
LH: Yes, that’s when I first heard about this. I recognized the writing on the PQ sheets and could tell the tape originated from a recording studio called The Distillery in Costa Mesa, which is where a lot of In The Red records were recorded. I checked the eBay seller’s other auctions and discovered a number of my reels were being sold too.
When you first saw Kerry's post, what was your first kind of emotional response?
LH: My first response was I knew exactly where the tapes came from. A few years ago another person posted a photo of some master tapes he had saying he was trying to find the bands. One of the bands was the Strange Boys, and they contacted me and said the guy had a bunch of ITR masters. I got a hold of the guy and told him my connection to the tapes, and he said he’d gotten the them from Mike McHugh and had been holding them for him, but Mike had gone AWOL. I never did get the tapes back from this guy.
Can you tell me about Mike McHugh and The Distillery, and how tapes from there might’ve ended up in this eBay seller’s possession?
LH: Yeah, [the studio] was owned and operated by Mike McHugh. He was a brilliant engineer with really good gear – the mixing board came from Muscle Shoals! And he was really down to do weird, unconventional things in the studio. He also actually liked the music. He was my go-to guy for many years. Unfortunately a combination of mental illness and substance abuse got the best of him, and he went downhill really fast and REALLY bad. One of the last sessions I had there was for the band Cheap Time, and he flipped out in the middle of the session and pulled a gun on them!
Anyway, he wound up losing his studio, and we had all the tapes still in there. Lots of other bands kept their tapes there too. I know a number of people tried to help him and tried to save all his gear but, sadly, he was beyond help. I guess a bunch of the stuff from the studio wound up in a storage locker and the bill didn’t get paid – so it all went up for auction. That’s how the guy who is selling them on eBay came into possession of them.
Are the things he's posting for sale original sessions or mastered reels?
LH: The reels being sold are the two-inch master reels. The bands would track on two-inch tape and then mix down to half-inch tape and the record would be mastered from that. Many times we would only take the mixed tape with us as that was what we’d master the record from. The studio had a room where they stored tapes, so we figured we’d leave the two-inch reels there for safe keeping.
In a way, the fact that these are original master tapes, pre-mixed/mastered tapes is even worse. These are unmixed tracks, right?
LH: Correct. These tapes being sold are the basic tracks on two-inch tape. You could take these to a studio and remix the record with them. We would mix down to half-inch tape so the versions on those are what you hear on the record. Mastering is a separate step done in a mastering lab. This is why once the mixing was done you kind of felt like the two-inch tapes were done too. They already served their purpose.
Yeah, we all sort of leave things in the rearview mirror once the album comes out, as far as where recordings and master tapes end up.
LH: Yeah, some bands are really good about keeping track of their tapes, and some don’t really care. I know the Cramps kept all of their master tapes, but I don’t think most bands do that. I do still have a bunch of master tapes here at my house. I imagine a lot of people took their tapes with them when their session was done. They’re expensive. I did sometimes, but I was at this studio so often I just figured they were fine where they were… until they weren’t. I didn’t have any place to store them at my house anyway. Two-inch tapes take up a lot of room.
Beyond that particular story, when bands record in studios there is a kind of “gentleman's agreement” – especially amongst indie labels and smaller studios – to at least let the bands or labels know they've got their tapes before just selling them off or tossing them, right? My understanding is, if you paid the studio their fee and paid for the actual tapes, they are your's. Though I suppose if they've been sitting in a studio’s closet for 20 years, maybe there's an argument for ownership on the studio's end?
LH: We did have a general understanding when we left the tapes behind that they’d be looked after by Mike. There was also a window of time when I could’ve gone down there and gotten them all; and I didn’t want to deal with him so I just kind of let it go. The only use they would be is if you wanted to remix the record, which I guess is something that could come up.
After leaving them behind that long ago it makes sense they could end up almost anywhere. Now you have a guy selling them on eBay who doesn’t even know who the bands are.
Under Kerry's post, a person commented: "No judgement! But you own the IP [intellectual property] on these tapes as they are independent recordings. You should reach out to the seller!" Is he right?
LH: That’s true. The eBay seller rightfully owns those tapes, but neither he or anyone else who buys them can do anything with the music without the artist’s permission…. Unfortunately this guy did buy them fair and square. I’m sure Kerry paid for that tape and the recording session, but the tapes were left behind all those years ago, and they’ve been passed around a bunch since. These tapes weren’t stolen, they were left behind. It should’ve been on us to get them back if they were important to us. Of course no one could’ve predicted Mike was going to go off the rails as badly as he did. The eBay seller did nothing wrong or illegal.
Lisa Pallow, Haunted George’s wife, contacted him explaining that two of the tapes were her deceased husband’s music, and that she would like to buy them. And the way he responded to her tells me the guy is an asshole. Really the person at fault for all of this is Mike McHugh.
I'm assuming if Rocket from the Crypt tapes are involved here – there were some for sale in that listing – someone's going to take some shit for this, because they were on a major at one point, though I've no idea which RFTC recordings are on those tapes in that eBay post.
LH: Yeah, that was the one tape I saw in there that I thought would probably go for the most money and also could turn into a hassle for the seller if he hears from [RFTC leader] John Reis or an attorney. I don’t think there would be any legal recourse against this guy though.
John Sellers from ‘90s trash-punk band, the Countdowns, commented on Kerry's post, concerning The Distillery: "It was the original board from Muscle Shoals.....Mike told me that [the Rolling Stones’] Sticky Fingers was recorded through it... it had these red and green square buttons to push... totally sixties mod... he LOVED that board!!! Chris... maybe? And I forget his last name but, he had a studio in the same complex as The Distillery and would tour with JSBX selling merch back in the '90's... he told me the whole story about Mike buying that board... how he flew out and it was sent by train upon purchase and how he accompanied it from start to finish... and how Chris would walk in and Mike would be passed out... not by drugs but by obsessive inspiration and no sleep.... with a clove cigarette in his mouth... under that board... working to make it work.
I THINK that The Countdowns were one of the first to record through that board at The Distillery but... well... memories and remembering shit these days... I always referred to Mike as 'The Mad Scientist. He was an absolute thrill of an experience to work with AND... did you ever hear him play drums? FUCK ME!!!”

-----------------------------------------------
LH: We did have some great times in that studio and before it all went bad. We hailed Mike McHugh as a genius. He was! It’s all very sad to me now. I have some great memories of that place. Andre Williams recorded with the Blues Explosion and Steve Mackay of the Stooges there! Good times.
Any other recording sessions at The Distillery that you remember?
LH: The wildest sessions I remember at that studio involved Andre Williams. He would get pretty drunk over the course of the session, so you had to get him on tape before he was too drunk. He had amazing stories and he was hilarious. He was also brilliant when he was lucid. He had produced records for Motown, and now he’s in Orange County with miscreants like us!
I watched the Hunches vacuum up nails and screws off the floor while Mike recorded it so the obnoxious noise could be included on the band’s cover of the electric eels’ “Accident.” Not many engineers encourage this sort of thing.
I went down to the Distillery for the final night of mixing the Black Lips’ Let It Bloom. The band had booked a show that night at a club directly across the street from the studio. The band left for their show, but I stayed behind with Mike while he continued mixing. I finally went over to the show and went up front. Cole Alexander had urinated into his own mouth, as he was wont to do back then, and spat the mouthful at the audience. I walked in late and went up just in time to get a face full of urine. I was now in business with the Black Lips.
youtube
My fondest memory of that studio is probably when the Necessary Evils recorded their second album. I know we were in there on New Year’s Eve. Those guys were all good friends of mine, as was Mike McHugh. The band didn’t have enough material to fill a full length album and were scrambling to cobble stuff together on the spot. It was a wonder to behold. Every one of those guys was hilarious. R.I.P. Steve Pallow.
I have tons of great memories from this studio. It’s really painful for me to think of Mike ending up like he did. Truly heartbreaking.

---------------------------------------
Like any Facebook thread, the mass of names and rushed, emotionally punched-out comments can make for an intriguing read. Hell, a good pal of mine and Kerry’s posted that he put in a bid and would give the tape to her if he won it. He did get a couple of the tapes in the listing, but as Kerry stated earlier here, her tape was taken down after she reported it; and my friend got a cancellation message from eBay.
For Kerry though all this is definitely not legal chit-chat, but a loss of something dear, intense, and loved. It’s the kind of mini-nightmare anyone who’s recorded in a studio and then left it for “safe keeping” always has lurking in the back of their mind.
“I feel like crying all day today because of this,” said Kerry. “I don’t know why. Mike is so talented and I really want these tapes back. I used to hang out there a lot with Ronnie when I lived in Long Beach still. So many happy memories there – grateful for the scene ! Le sigh.”
-----------------------------------------------
After having wrapped up this piece, I heard from Kerry again with a possible happy ending to this story:
“I reported it as stolen, and it was pulled, and some punker dude in Costa Mesa went to get it for me," she explained, "but I didn’t ask him to. I don’t want the [eBay] guy to get the money. So the Good Samaritan kinda fucked it all up, and is supposed to mail it to me. And he paid $150 for it, so now I feel obligated to pay him back. Lots of people offered to buy it for me. And he bought RFTC and Haunted George."
Kerry asked said Samaritan (who shall remain annonymous) how he was able to get the tapes. He responded:
"Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I purchased the tapes directly from the guy... who bids on storage units. I bought a bunch of friends bands tapes and got them back to them. I knew going in that I'd lose money and I'm ok with that. Please let me gift you your tape back. Years ago I lost all of my... master reels in a storage unit that went unpaid while I was in rehab. I hate seeing strangers getting these tapes. Mike McHugh is the one to blame here. Although it’s hard to blame him with all of his mental health and addiction problems. I got my Distillery reels back from him several years ago after he lost the studio.... Anyway... I can get the tape to you or whoever you’d like me to. Larry Hardy maybe. No charge for the tape. Big Red Aunts fan by the way."

Third Person POV
Frank and Dwayne are sitting in chairs in the hallway, with Tyler sitting on her boyfriend’s lap. Since her left arm is around his shoulder, she’s playing with his hair while his arms are wrapped tightly around her waist, her right hand resting on his laced fingers. Frank is looking at a newspaper that was sitting on the table between the two chairs.
He glances over at the couple before flipping the page. ‘The Surprise Best-Seller From America’s #1 Proust Scholar’ is the headline right above the picture of Larry Sugarman and his new book. He immediately closes the newspaper and tosses it on the table. He sighs to himself as he tries to relax in his chair.
Two girls around the age of six run past them, giggling in their poofy dresses causing Dwayne to look up at his girlfriend then his uncle. He gently pats Tyler’s hip before speaking.
“Let’s get outta here.”
She stands up from his lap and takes his hand, walking with him out of the area. After another little girl runs by him, Frank stands up and runs after his nephew and his girlfriend, not wanting to be in the hallway either. Together, the three of them walk out of the building and down to the beach that Richard brought up two days beforehand.
Holding hands, Tyler swings them softly, enjoying the breeze that is hitting her face. Dwayne continues to think about their future while enjoying his girlfriend’s soft hand in his rough calloused one. His heart speeds up everytime he thinks of her being his girlfriend. In their seventeen years of life, he’s always dreamed of her saying yes, but he never thought it would happen.
Sure, it was in his plan, hell it was the majority of his plan, but it never believed it would come true. Maybe she’s right. They’ll find a way for him to continue his dream, despite his colorblind-ness. Without realizing, Frank had detoured them on the long wooden dock that overlooks the water. Dwayne lets go of her hand and leans against the railing in front of him, his chin now resting on his laced fingers.
Tyler stands on one side of him with her head on his shoulder while Frank stands on the other, just staring into the water. Dwayne picks up his head from his hands and lays it on hers, relaxing for a moment. The trio is silent for a while until he speaks up.
“Sometimes, I wish I could just sleep the next year until we’re eighteen. Just skip all this crap. The rest of high school and everything. Just skip it.”
“You heard of Marcel Proust?” Frank asks, putting his hands on the railing.
“He’s the guy you teach.” He says, glancing at his uncle.
Tumblr media
“Yeah. French writer. Total loser. Never had a real job. Unrequited love affairs. Gay. Spent twenty years writing a book almost no one reads.” He says, causing the couple to giggle. “But he was also probably the greatest writer since Shakespeare. Anyway! He gets down to the end of his life, he looks back and decides that all the years he suffered - those were the best years of his life. Because they made him who he was. The years he was happy? Total waste. Didn’t learn anything…” He glances at them with a smile. “So if you sleep for the next year, think of all the suffering you’d miss. High school? High school’s your prime suffering years. Hell, you’d miss the first year of being with Miss Walker over there. Do you really want to miss that?!”
Dwayne lifts his head up and looks down at her with a grin. She blushes and looks up at him, curiously.
“You’re right. I wouldn’t want to miss that.” He says, before kissing her forehead.
He wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her into his side before looking at the water again. A million thoughts running through his head before he looks at his uncle.
“You know what?” He says, causing Frank to look over as he pulls Tyler in closer. “Fuck beauty contests. It’s like life is one fucking beauty contest after another. School, then college, then work? Fuck that. And fuck the AirForce Academy. If I wanna fly, I’ll find a way to fly. You do what you love and fuck the rest.”
Frank looks at him, impressed by his small speech. Dwayne glances at him before looking down at Tyler.
“We’ll find a way for you to fly.” She whispers, looking up at him.
He smiles at her softly.
“We’ll find a way for me to fly.” He repeats, kissing her head again.
“You know…” Frank speaks up. “I’m glad you’re talking again, Dwayne. You’re not nearly as stupid as you look.”
Tyler laughs, digging her face into her boyfriend’s side as he smiles at his uncle. Frank laughs and pats his shoulder.
“I’ll leave you two alone for a few minutes.”
He turns around and starts walking back to the other end of the dock, enjoying the view. Tyler turns in her boyfriend’s arms and leans against the railing in front of him. A smile appears on her face as his arms let her go and rest on the railing on either side of her, his own smile widening.
“I haven’t heard your voice in six months. I almost forgot what you sounded like.” She states, looking into his eyes. “I missed it.”
“You know…That wasn’t the first thing that I wanted you to hear when the vow finally came to an end.” He says, watching her.
“What was it going to be?” She tilts her head slightly confused.
He licks his lips and sighs softly, looking deep into her eyes. “That I love you, which I do.”
Her eyes widens slightly. “You love me?”
“Yeah. When I wrote you that note yesterday, I didn’t want to seem weird for saying it too early, so I was going to save it for when I finally got into the AirForce. But then…” He pauses for a moment. “Well, you were there. And we practically haven’t left each other’s side in seventeen years. Kinda hard for me not to love everything about you.”
She blushes, a smile growing on her face. “You really wanted that to be the first thing I heard in a year?”
“Yeah. I’d thought it would be…romantic.” He shrugs slightly, nervous.
She stands straight off the railing and wraps her arms around his neck, forcing him to lean down slightly. Standing on her tiptoes, she presses her lips against his. Somewhat shocked, he kisses her back happily, resting his hands on her hips. Their mouths move in sync, still getting used to kissing each other - well kissing in general.
Needing air, they pull away and pant softly, looking into each other's eyes.
“I love you, too, Dwayne.” She whispers.
“Really?” He grins at her.
“I knew for sure I loved you when you made me this bracelet.” She answers, removing her arm from his neck to show him the leather on her wrist.
“You were the only one I thought of when I was told to make it.” He admits, blushing slightly.
“Well, I’m glad.” She leans up again, pressing her lips to his.
He squeezes her hips slightly, holding her close until they pull away once again.
“I love you.” He whispers, smiling softly.
“I love you, too.” She presses another quick kiss to his lips.
“Come on.” He pats her hip. “We should go back inside.”
“Fineee…” She playfully whines before taking his hand.
He chuckles and walks with her to the end of the dock where Frank is patiently waiting. As they walk across the beach, wanting to keep the mood upbeat, Tyler starts picking on her boyfriend.
“Frank, did you know that when Dwayne was eight…”
He immediately covers her mouth, shaking his head.
“Nope. Nope. I know what story you’re going to tell.”
“Come on, Dwayne. I want to hear this story!” Frank grins, looking over at the happy couple.
“Nope…”
Before he can finish his thought, Tyler maneuvers out of his arms and gently pushes Frank to the side away from him.
“Anyway! When he was eight, he got a piece of his airplane model…”
Dwayne grabs her around the waist and picks her up, gently throwing her over his shoulder.
“Put me down!” She laughs, holding onto his belt.
“No! You’re not telling him that story!” He shakes his head, a grin on his face as he walks.
“Frank! Can you hear me?!” She playfully yells out to the older man walking behind them.
“Yeah, Ty! I can hear you!” He calls out, cupping his mouth as he smiles, despite being only a few feet behind.
“Anyway! He got…”
“No!” Dwayne laughs, putting her down.
She crosses her arms and pouts, seeing that they’re in front of the hotel.
“You’re lucky we're back.” She grins as she walks into the building.
Frank looks over at his nephew, his smile never leaving his face.
“What happened when you were eight?”
Dwayne sighs and shakes his head. “I got a piece of the airplane motel stuck up my nose because I wanted to see if it would fit…”
His uncle bites his lip, trying not to laugh. “Is it still up there?”
“No.” He rolls his eyes, mumbling, “Tyler put some pepper under my nose. I sneezed and it shot across the room. It stuck to the wall…”
Frank starts laughing before covering his mouth to stop himself. Dwayne playfully glares at him, a small grin appearing before walking inside. He jumps slightly, shocked to see his girlfriend leaning against the wall beside the door.
“I knew you'd tell him.” She says before turning toward the staircase.
He gently smacks her butt causing her to squeal and look at him.
“Get upstairs.” He grins and walks around her.

Finally making it to the auditorium where Olive will be performing, the trio opens the door and steps inside. Their eyes widened at the younger girl, caked in makeup, dancing on stage in a sparkly gold cowgirl outfit. Almost immediately, they rush out of the room shocked by what they have seen. Frank leans against the wall while the couple are slightly disgusted.
How could parents let their kids do this or even encourage them? And, sorry to Olive, but there was no way they would pick her. She’s a normal seven year old girl. She’s got a little meat on her bones while all these girls barely have any fat on their BMI. Olive does this for fun. It seems like these girls do it for the competition.
They can’t let her go on. She can’t be judged for being who she is!
“We’re going backstage.” Tyler says, grabbing her boyfriend’s arm and walking in the direction she remembers Olive going.
“Right. See ya.”
As they walk, they pass a woman with a headset on who is escorting another little girl down the hallway.
“Are you authorized to be backstage?” She asks, looking up at Dwayne.
“No.” He states, not giving her a single glance as he holds his girlfriend’s hand.
All around them are little girls crying, whining or lolling about. All their mothers are over-dressed as if they were the ones competing on that stage. There is a little girl standing with her friend as they walk around a corner.
“Hey, where are the dressing rooms?” Dwayne asks her, never stopping their walk.
“Are you allowed to be here?” She raises an eyebrow.
“Just tell us where the dressing rooms are.” Tyler rolls her eyes.
The girl never answers so they keep walking until they see a sign. She pulls him in that direction, finally reaching their destination. He stands straighter, looking for his mom before gently tugging her toward them. Standing a few feet away from Olive, Sheryl and Richard are talking. They approach and Sheryl smiles at them.
“How you feeling?” She asks him.
“Better. Where’s Olive?”
“She’s there. What’s the matter?” She glances between her son and husband.
Tyler, knowing this is a family matter, walks over to Olive, who is wearing black pants, a white button down shirt with a black vest over it with a red tie, her gold sparkly converse on her feet. She kneels down next to her, rubbing her arm as she squats.
“Nervous?” She smiles.
“A little.” She admits, looking up at her, unofficially, adopted sister. “What if I’m not good enough?”
“Olive, you’ve been working so hard.” She moves a piece of long hair out of her face. “Grandpa taught you everything you know about this routine. We’re so proud of you for coming this far. It’s scary because all these girls have been doing this for years. But I…” She pauses, knowing she doesn’t want the young girl to be judged for the way she looks. “I believe in you as long as you believe in yourself. Do you?”
The young girl thinks to herself for a moment and nods, looking up at her again.
“Then I believe you can do this. Just promise me something?” Tyler grins at her.
“What?” She asks, innocently.
“When you become famous, you don’t forget me. Because I’ll always be your number one fan.” She smiles.
“Really?” Olive’s eyes light up.
“Always! Even if you decide you want to own a cow farm in the middle of nowhere. I’ll be cheering you on.” She giggles, causing the young girl to smile widely. “Here. Let me do something to your hair.”
Tumblr media
She sits straighter as Tyler stands up from her kneeling position. She grabs the hairbrush and starts brushing the top of her hair back, being mindful of the athletic headband.
“Olive Hoover? Are you the family?” The lady with the headset from earlier calls out.
Tyler ignores her and puts Olive’s hair into a half updo, braiding the long hair falling from it. She grabs a hair tie just as Sheryl, Richard and Dwayne approach them. As she starts tying off the braid, Sheryl kneels down with a small smile.
“Thanks, Ty.” She then looks at her daughter. “Olive, it’s time. Okay?”
She nods slightly, letting Tyler finish her hair.
“We gotta go now.” The lady says, bouncing in her spot.
“Hold on. Olive, look at me.” Sheryl says, softly. “If you don’t want to do this, that’s okay. If you want to sit this one out, it’s totally fine by us. We’re proud of you anyway.”
The young girl thinks to herself for a moment, ignoring the lady with the headset as she tries to rush them. She then takes off her glasses and puts her top hat on. She stands up and looks up at Tyler who has a smile on her face. The older teenager puts her thumbs up, silently encouraging her.
“Thanks, Ty.” She smiles, silently informing her that her words helped her decision before taking the assistant's hand.
They begin to walk away and her family watches nervously. They watch as she gets smaller and smaller.
“Good luck, honey!” Sheryl calls out.
They rush out of the hallway and to the auditorium, where Frank is waiting outside. Wanting to make it to their seats to see the young girl, they run toward the door.
“Is she going on?” Frank asks, running up to them as Sheryl opens the door.
“She’s going on.” Dwayne says, following his family.
“Yeah.” Richard says at the exact same time as his stepson.
The five of them rush to their seats, just as the current contestant leaves the stage. Moving to their seats Dwayne, Tyler, Frank, Sheryl then Richard sit down in that order.
“You’ve been a patient audience tonight! We have one more contestant and then we’ll be crowning our winner! Please give a warm welcome to…” The host says, pulling out a cue card from his pocket. “Miss Olive Hoover!”
The audience starts clapping, but half of them don’t care so they’re half-assed. The young girl slowly steps into the spotlight, glancing around for her family. When she spots them, she looks at the host, waving him over.
“What’s wrong?” He whispers but she gently tilts the microphone to her mouth.
“I’d like to dedicate this to my Grandpa, who showed me these moves…” She trails off.
“Awe! That’s sweet! Is he here? Where’s your Grandpa right now?” He asks, holding the microphone out.
“In the trunk of our car.” She admits, causing the host to laugh nervously, not understanding.
The room is completely silent while the Hoover family glances around, hoping no one would question her statement.
“Okay…Well take it away, Olive!” The host says, rushing off the stage.
She turns away from the audience and waits for the music to start playing. Over the speakers, Super Freak by Rick James starts playing. Tyler’s eyes widen slightly as she glances at her boyfriend who is very confused. Olive starts dancing, putting her hands in the air. Just as the lyrics start, she begins to spank herself as she wiggles her butt.
Frank nods his head, laughing to himself in disbelief. They should have realized ahead of time that Grandpa was the one that taught her how to dance so it had to be some kind of outrageous routine. Olive turns around and tosses her hat toward the host before she starts walking toward the audience.
Almost immediately with the beat, she tears her pants off, revealing red shorts. Her family’s eyes widened, realizing what Grandpa had indeed taught her. He taught her to strip as her routine.
“Is she?” Tyler whispers to Dwayne as she watches.
“Yep…”
She glances around the audience and bites her lip at the only one enjoying this. Miss California is dancing to herself, smiling, excited for Olive’s dancing skills. They decide to just let Olive…be Olive. She’s having fun and she’s smiling up a storm. How can they take this away from her? Some girls get up and start walking out of the auditorium, angering Dwayne and Tyler.
This seven year old is having fun just being herself and they’re going to leave? What the hell? People start yelling insults at the young girl who continues to dance, confused.
“What are they doing?” Frank asks, angrily. “I’ll kill them.”
Wanting his niece to feel better, he stands up and begins to clap to the beat of the music. At this moment, Olive takes off her tie and rips off her shirt, revealing a black tank top, continuing her dance. Richard stands up and begins to clap with his brother-in-law, knowing his daughter is having fun. Sheryl stands up and starts clapping, following her husband’s involvement.
Tyler, smiling to herself, stands up and dances to herself, excited about the random turn that this trip had taken. Dwayne also leaves his seat, and starts throwing his fist in the air, dancing along as well. Embarrassed and angry, Ms. Jenkins stands up from the judges table and walks over to Richard and Sheryl.
“What is your daughter doing?”
Richard grins and continues to clap. “She’s kicking ass - is what she’s doing.”
Ms. Jenkins did not like his answer. She walks straight over to Kirby, who is manning the sound booth, dancing slightly.
“Turn it off!” She yells at him.
“What?”
“Turn the music off!”
“What?” He yells back, pretending not to hear her and turns the music up.
The audience is split. Some mothers and daughters are leaving, not wanting to watch the seven year old dance, while others like Miss California and a Biker are bobbing their heads, enjoying the show. Ms. Jenkins walks straight to the host and demands him to get off the stage.
“Hey! Don’t you touch her!” He yells before rushing to the stage.
Sheryl gasps and covers her mouth, moving toward the aisle. Frank and Dwayne, who gently pushed past his girlfriend, rush to each side of the stage to be there in case Richard gets overtaken. Richard leaps on the stage as the host tries to grab Olive’s arm. He jumps on his back and practically piggy-back rides him until they get to the side of the stage.
“Keep dancing, honey!” He calls out to his daughter who is slightly frightened.
She glances toward her mother and Tyler who are both standing in the aisle with smiles on their faces. She continues her routine, still nervous. Richard disentangles himself from the host and shrugs off stagehands, watching his daughter dance.
“Get your daughter off the stage now!” Ms. Jenkins snaps. “I will not have her ruin my show!”
He hesitates and nods, understanding where she’s coming from. He sighs and starts walking  onto the stage, calling her name. Olive continues to dance but looks up at her father confused. He then glances toward the judge who is staring at him. Not wanting to hurt his daughter’s feelings, he grins to himself and puts his hands behind his head, flapping them.
He’s dancing! Tyler and Sheryl start laughing as they realize what’s going on. He’s not getting her off the stage! On his face is a large, defiant, fuck-you smile as he looks at Ms. Jenkins as he continues to dance with his daughter. Enjoying this new kind of Richard, Frank jumps onto the stage and starts dancing as well, smirking at the angry lady at the side of the stage.
Following his uncle’s lead, Dwayne jumps onto the stage. He looks at his girlfriend before putting his fists out and thrusting his hips, a serious yet funny look on his face.

Tyler and Sheryl laugh even harder at the sight before them as Kirby turns the music all the way up to ten. Her mother figure looks at her with a wide smile.
“Come on.”
“Me too?” Tyler raises an eyebrow, slightly confused.
“You’re family, aren’t you?” Sheryl grins.
She then grabs the teenager's arm before they both run to the stage, running straight toward Olive who is smiling widely at them. Together, the six of them dance to the music in random and embarrassing ways. Dwayne even grabs his girlfriend’s hand and twirls her around in a circle before dipping her, both laughing.
Suddenly the rest of the family, including Olive, hold hands, forming a circle around the couple, as they begin to jump around. Soon the music comes to an end and the family is laughing until they realize the room is almost completely silent. They look around, nervously until Miss California and Kirby, along with random audience members clap for their performance.
They giggle slightly before smiling as the biker that Richard talked with earlier that afternoon stands up.
“Yeah!!” He throws his hands up. “Alright!!!”

Turns out Ms. Jenkins called the police. The family are sitting outside the hotel office, embarrassed. Sheryl and Tyler are looking around the hallway while Richard, Frank and Dwayne are staring down at the floor. Olive is still in her costume, swinging her legs, still not understanding what happened. While they wait for the officer to talk to Ms. Jenkins, Tyler elbows Sheryl, capturing her attention.
The older woman looks down at her, raising an eyebrow. Tilting her head, Tyler gestures discreetly toward a box sitting on a table a few feet away. Inside are pageant materials - trophies, sashes, and tiaras. Both females smirk at one another, a plan forming in their minds. A few seconds later, the office door opens and the officer walks out, putting his hands on his hips.
“Okay, you’re out. On the condition that you never enter your daughter in a beauty pageant in the state of California again.” He glances between each family member. “Ever.”
Frank nods and looks toward his sister, “I think we can live with that…”
Sheryl shakes her head in disbelief but nods. “Alright.”
He lets them stand but turns away, not catching Tyler grabbing something from the box on the table. They all walk out to the bus, bags in their hands. Richard had fixed the door earlier than he called the funeral home so it’s attached to the car once again. He opens the trunk and everyone notices that Grandpa is gone, leaving only the hospital sheet.
“Olive…” Richard says, folding it up. “Grandpa would’ve been really proud of you.”
“Yeah! You were great!” Sheryl says, kissing her head.
“You were beyond great.” Frank continues, smiling.
“You were incredible.” Dwayne says, grinning as he helps put the bags in the trunk.
“You were the best one there!” Tyler says, kneeling in front of her. “Which is why…”
She pulls out the item she stole from the beauty pageant box. A tiara. Olive gasps loudly and covers her mouth. Richard, Frank and Dwayne are shocked by the item in her hand but Sheryl and Tyler are grinning up a storm, their plan complete.
“Ty! Where did you get that?” The seven year old asks, looking at her.
“I told you I believed in you as long as you believe in yourself. And you did so your mom and I decided to do something special for you, knowing you should have won.” She says, not telling her the truth that they stole it.
“Thank you!!” She throws her arms around the teenager’s neck, hugging her tight.
She laughs and hugs her, pressing a kiss against her temple.
“Come on, Miss Hoover…” Tyler says, putting the tiara on her head. “Your chariot awaits!”
Once again, they all are forced to push the bus since there is no hill. Richard climbs in first with Olive jumping in a second later, scooting to the window as she makes sure her tiara is on her head. Laughing, Sheryl runs and jumps in, always loving the adrenaline. As the bus rolls, they start approaching another toll booth where Ms. Jenkins is handing over her pass.
Frank jumps into the seat next to Olive without Dwayne's help. Tyler laughs and runs around the bus, grabbing onto her boyfriend’s uncle’s hands as he helps her into the bus. Just before they hit Ms. Jenkin’s car, Dwayne jumps in and Richard drives the bus around the toll building into the opposite toll gate bar, breaking it into pieces.
The family laughs at the look at the woman’s face as they drive by. They all calm down, still smiling at the day's events. Everything started off shitty with Grandpa passing away and them stealing his body but ended with the family finally coming together as one. Richard realized that his family is way more important than his stupid Nine Steps.
Frank realized that he does have someone who cares about him. His own family who he didn’t see for years. The young teenagers are finally together and are happily in love. Olive and Sheryl are almost the same, just happy that everything is amazing. On their ride to the next hotel, Richard glances in the rearview mirror to see Dwayne with his arm around Tyler’s shoulder as they look out the side window.
“Dwayne, Ty, I don’t want grandkids yet. So if you two are going to continue to sleep in the same bed, be careful.”
Their faces immediately turn beat red, blushing at his words, knowing they're not ready for that stage in their relationship yet.
“Richard!” Sheryl laughs. “They’re only been together for a day! Let them enjoy their relationship before you start talking about grandkids. Besides, Frank is going to be in the room!”
“He won’t always be there!” He laughs, glancing back at the kids who are hiding their faces in embarrassment but they’re still smiling.
“Wait!” Olive turns around to look at her brother and his girlfriend. “You’re dating?!”
Dwayne nods, grinning down at Tyler who looks up at him. He leans down and kisses her head, holding her close to him.
“Now, who wants ice cream?” Richard glances into the rearview mirror.

The next day, the Hoover family are home, relaxing after their adventure. Frank is in the living room with Olive, helping her come up with a different routine she could do for a pageant. Sheryl is helping Richard find an actual job so he can stop all these ‘get rich quick’ scams. Tyler and Dwayne are in his bedroom - the door wide open - as they read together.
He’s up leaning against the headboard, reading a book that his girlfriend had on the windowsill. Tyler is laying between his legs with her head against his chest, reading her own book. His fingers are running through her hair as he looks away from his book. He grins to himself, happy that Frank helped him gain the courage to ask her out.
“I love you.” He whispers, watching her.
She looks up, a smile appearing on her face. “I love you too, Dwayne.”
He leans down and kisses her forehead, holding her close to him as he looks back at his book, content with his life now.
