Mrs. Petrovic: Madam Speaker, Trudeau and his continued mission to further encroach into the lives of Albertans is ignoring the voices of us in this matter. That is why Bill 204 is a necessary piece of legislation to make sure Albertans will be heard loud and clear. This is not just a hypothetical concern, either. Last August the city of Edmonton council voted 10 to 3 in favour of moving forward with a plan to potentially establish a national urban park in Edmonton’s river valley. This is not what Albertans want. From my experience leading a municipality as a former mayor, I can attest that this is not the approach Albertans want.

A United Conservative Party candidate is suggesting heart attack victims should take more personal accountability.

Chelsae Petrovic, the UCP candidate for Livingstone-Macleod, who is also the current mayor of Claresholm and a nurse, said she sees people suffer from heart attacks and not take responsibility for the own health.

“This might be political suicide here, what I’m about to say,” she prefaced her comments during an interview in February with a podcast called The Canadian Story, hosted by David Parker and Zach Gerbe.

“We can look at this and I see it in health care, I’m going to say it: maybe the reason you had a heart attack was because you haven’t taken care of yourself; You’re extremely overweight, you haven’t managed your congestive heart failure, you haven’t managed your diabetes, and there’s no personal accountability,” Petrovic said. Some have speculated it's already "the power behind the throne" of the UCP, but a controversial right-wing group appears to be grabbing even more influence ahead of Alberta's May election. Conservative Lisa Sygutek says a mid-March Livingstone-Macleod meeting was "packed" with people who identified as Take Back Alberta (TBA) members.

It was an event she won't soon forget. "There was a sense of hostility in the building," she told CTV News. "I've never seen anything like it." The meetings, according to Sygutek, typically involve some light debate, conversation about issues in the riding, and then a vote for new board members. She says every other similar association event she's attended has had a handful of new candidates and some slight turnover.

March's meeting was different. "A couple people were saying, 'I'm a member of Take Back Alberta,'" she said, "and that's when it started to tweak on me that things were getting a little bit too aggressive and extremist for my liking."

Livingstone-Macleod's vote ended with a massive overhaul, and Sygutek estimates 80 percent of the new leadership has TBA connections. "It actually felt like a coup," she said. "It was a charged meeting."

Registered third-party advertiser Take Back Alberta has allegedly inserted members into at least two other conservative constituency associations in Innisfail-Sylvan Lake and Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre. Nine of the UCP board member candidates the group endorsed now hold leadership positions in the party, and many believe two other ridings have TBA-backed candidates. 

Recently-removed Lethbridge West candidate Torry Tanner is also alleged to have been involved with TBA, according to political scientist Lori Williams. Tanner left her post this week after a blowback from her claims that "kids, even those attending kindergarten, are being exposed to pornographic materials or, worse yet, having teachers help them change their gender identity with absolutely no parental consent or knowledge whatsoever."

Williams believes there are similar "extreme" views in the group. "These are the people that Jason Kenney said were the inmates taking over the asylum." Williams believes TBA is pushing the conservatives towards private health care and education, and eventually towards Alberta police, pensions, and separation.

"It's not one-person, one-vote equal representation in a democracy," she said. "Here are a few people who are very well organized and motivated to try to move the party and the government in the direction that they want it to move."

CTV News reached out to TBA for comment on this story and another on Friday. We haven't received a response. Sygutek believes the lack of information isn't attractive to a voter.

"You can't get anything off their website," she said. "You can't really tell what their policies and procedures are, and that should be apparent." We do know Take Back Alberta is a registered third-party advertiser created last year. 

Right-wing activist David Parker is the executive director, and Marco Van Huigenbos is the CFO. The latter is the Fort Macleod town councilor who was charged for participating in the Coutts border blockade.

Parker began the group as a way to push back against COVID-19 measures, but it now has a wider scope. TBA takes credit for removing Jason Kenney from his post as premier and electing Danielle Smith.

Parker wouldn't tell CTV News last week how many members TBA has, but when asked about the group Friday, Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Devin Dreeshen said "there's a lot of them across the province." Dreeshen didn't deny that some of those members now hold the majority of positions within his constituency association.

The United Nations has made a statement regarding the protests against racial inequality in the United States. It reads:

"The recent killing of George Floyd has shocked many in the world, but it is the lived reality of black people across the United States. The uprising nationally is a protest against systemic racism that produces state-sponsored racial violence, and licenses impunity for this violence. The uprising also reflects public frustration and protest against the many other glaring manifestations of systemic racism that have been impossible to ignore in the past months, including the racially disparate death rate and socioeconomic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the disparate and discriminatory enforcement of pandemic-related restrictions. This systemic racism is gendered. The protests the world is witnessing, are a rejection of the fundamental racial inequality and discrimination that characterize life in the United States for black people, and other people of color.

The response of the President of the United States to the protests at different junctures has included threatening more state violence using language directly associated with racial segregationists from the nation’s past, who worked hard to deny black people fundamental human rights. We are deeply concerned that the nation is on the brink of a militarized response that reenacts the injustices that have driven people to the streets to protest.

Expressions of solidarity—nationally and internationally—are important but they are not enough. Many in the United States and abroad are finally acknowledging that the problem is not a few bad apples, but instead the problem is the very way that economic, political and social life are structured in a country that prides itself in liberal democracy, and with the largest economy in the world. The true demonstration of whether Black lives do indeed matter remains to be seen in the steps that public authorities and private citizens take in response to the concrete demands that protestors are making. One example is nationwide calls to rollback staggering police and military budgets, and for reinvestment of those funds in healthcare, education, housing, pollution prevention and other social structures, especially in communities of color that have been impoverished and terrorized by discriminatory state intervention.

Reparative intervention for historical and contemporary racial injustice is urgent, and required by international human rights law. This is a time for action and not just talk, especially from those who need not fear for their lives or their livelihoods because of their race, colour, or ethnicity. Globally, people of African descent and others have had to live the truths of systemic racism, and the associated pain, often without meaningful recourse as they navigate their daily lives. International leaders that have spoken out in solidarity with protestors, and with black people in the United States should also take this opportunity to address structural forms of racial and ethnic injustice in their own nations, and within the international system itself.

Former Opposition and Wildrose leader Danielle Smith is re-entering provincial politics with an eye on the United Conservative Party leadership.

Smith told Postmedia on Thursday she will put her name forward to become the UCP nominee for Livingstone-Macleod in next year’s general election, with an official announcement planned for Friday. If Premier Jason Kenney loses an upcoming leadership vote, she said she will throw her hat in the ring in the ensuing race for the party’s top job.

“I’ve had lots of people approach me saying when are you gonna get back into politics, and specifically asking me if I’d put my name forward here, and so I talked with my husband and we agreed, gonna give it one more try,” said Smith.

She said she is returning to politics because she is upset the UCP cancelled its April 9 general meeting and moved the leadership vote to mail-in ballots. She called for the party to reverse the decision and either hold the vote in person in Red Deer or set up polls in all major population centres to allow people easy access.

She also noted she is angry with how Kenney has characterized people in the province as “lunatics” or bigots based on their views around COVID-19 and public health mandates.

“If me announcing allows people to think that I might be a leadership candidate, then fair enough, I’m in,” said Smith. “I will put my name forward for leadership as well. But that really is a decision that’s up to members, and if members choose to keep the current leader, then I’m quite happy to make my voice heard from the backbench.”

She would join a battle that saw Kenney against another former Wildrose Party leader, Brian Jean, who recently won a by-election as the UCP candidate in Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche.

Smith has a long history in Alberta politics, beginning with a nearly year-long stint as a Calgary Board of Education trustee in the 1990s. She would later become the leader of the provincial Wildrose Party and elevate the party to official opposition status.

Her time with the Wildrose ended in 2014 when she crossed the floor and joined the Progressive Conservative party, led at the time by Jim Prentice. She would lose the PC nomination in her home riding in 2015 before the region eventually elected a Wildrose member back into the legislature.

Following her time in politics, Smith hosted a daily talk radio show on Corus Radio for six years and has regularly written columns for Postmedia papers, including the Calgary Herald. She left Corus last year, decrying what she perceived as restrictions on free speech, saying there were topics that were “unchallengeable.” She has since been the president of the Alberta Enterprise Group.

While on the radio, she regularly criticized Kenney’s handling of COVID-19. She also apologized early in the pandemic after tweeting false claims about COVID-19 treatments.

If successful in her nomination in Livingstone-Macleod, she said she would look to involve the grassroots of the party and work to make sure MLAs have a voice in caucus and the ability to bring forward constituents’ concerns.

“The approach that we’ve taken in Alberta is not the way Alberta politics normally takes place. It’s really more of an Ottawa style,” said Smith. “The individual MLAs almost completely taking out of the picture and that’s not giving good governance to the people in my constituency.”

After proclaiming her intention to run Friday, she said she will begin meeting with people and stakeholders in the riding to learn what concerns they have as she embarks on the campaign trail.

Smith said she informed current Livingstone-Macleod MLA Roger Reid of her decision to vie for the upcoming nomination earlier this week.

They could not reach Reid for comment Thursday.

Some have speculated it's already "the power behind the throne" of the UCP, but a controversial right wing group appears to be grabbing even more influence ahead of Alberta's May election.  Conservative Lisa Sygutek says a mid-March Livingstone-Macleod meeting was "packed" with people who identified as Take Back Alberta (TBA) members. It was an event she won't soon forget.  "There was a sense of hostility in the building," she told CTV News. "I've never seen anything like it."
