They especially don’t know how Google works, and they rely on it for everything.
My middle school students expect to be able to “search up” the answers to every assignment by simply copying and pasting the question into Google. They then give whatever answer Google comes up with, whether it makes sense or not. Which is usually how I catch them cheating.
They also plagiarize like crazy and never expect to get caught. I’ve had students who copied and pasted from Google search results and didn’t bother to change the formatting, so their search keywords are bolded and their answer includes the “last visited” timestamp.
They constantly ask the eternal student question: “when will we need to know this in real life?”
But no matter what my answer to that is, their response is “but I could just search it up.”
When I ask them how they think Google knows what it is, they respond “it just searches it up.”
Searching, to them, is a magical process that the omniscient Google just “does”. They do not know how to optimize search terms or to filter results to find what they’re actually looking for. When they’re trying to find information for an assignment, they rarely even click the links on the search results page. They just read the preview blurbs and take those as their answers.
It’s not just computer skills. It’s the ability to learn, process, and filter information. They are entirely reliant on Google for everything, partially because so many of them were given Chromebooks by their schools when COVID lockdowns happened and now don’t know how to use anything other than that or their phone.
I typically block Google search for my students on my internet filter program, because it makes it harder for them to cheat and to find games they’re not supposed to be playing during class time. Because even if these kids know the game they’re looking for, they don’t know how to type a web address into the address bar.
They’ll finish their work and want to go to an approved educational game (I have a list), and they’ll tell me the game is blocked. I assure them it isn’t, and tell them they need to type the address directly. They have no idea. When I spell it out, they act like it’s this arduous task. Note - they could also click the link on my list of games. But that’s too many steps when they’re used to just typing the name of the game into the Omni box and Google finding it for them.
Basically, they don’t see a difference between searching for something on a search engine and typing a direct web address in an address bar, partially because their browser makes no such distinction with the single Omni bar replacing both search and address bar.

Which is about people wanting an AO3 app, but then it became large and way off topic, so here you go.
Nobody under the age of 20 knows how to use a computer or the internet. At all. They only know how to use apps. Their whole lives are in their phones or *maybe* a tablet/iPad if they're an artist. This is becoming a huge concern.
I'm a private tutor for middle- and high-school students, and since 2020 my business has been 100% virtual. Either the student's on a tablet, which comes with its own series of problems for screen-sharing and file access, or they're on mom's or dad's computer, and they have zero understanding of it.
They also don't know what the internet is, or even the absolute basics of how it works. You might not think that's an important thing to know, but stick with me.
Last week I accepted a new student. The first session is always about the tech -- I tell them this in advance, that they'll have to set up a few things, but once we're set up, we'll be good to go. They all say the same thing -- it won't be a problem because they're so "online" that they get technology easily.
I never laugh in their faces, but it's always a close thing. Because they are expecting an app. They are not expecting to be shown how little they actually know about tech.
I must say up front: this story is not an outlier. This is *every* student during their first session with me. Every single one. I go through this with each of them because most of them learn more, and more solidly, via discussion and discovery rather than direct instruction.
Once she logged in, I asked her to click on the icon for screen-sharing. I described the icon, then started with "Okay, move your mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen." She did the thing that those of us who are old enough to remember the beginnings of widespread home computers remember - picked up the mouse and moved it and then put it down. I explained she had to pull the mouse along the surface, and then click on the icon. She found this cumbersome. I asked if she was on a laptop or desktop computer. She didn't know what I meant. I asked if the computer screen was connected to the keyboard as one piece of machinery that you can open and close, or if there was a monitor - like a TV - and the keyboard was connected to another machine either by cord or by Bluetooth. Once we figured it out was a laptop, I asked her if she could use the touchpad, because it's similar (though not equivalent) to a phone screen in terms of touching clicking and dragging.
Once we got her using the touchpad, we tried screen-sharing again. We got it working, to an extent, but she was having trouble with... lots of things. I asked if she could email me a download or a photo of her homework instead, and we could both have a copy, and talk through it rather than put it on the screen, and we'd worry about learning more tech another day. She said she tried, but her email blocked her from sending anything to me.
This is because the only email address she has is for school, and she never uses email for any other purpose. I asked if her mom or dad could email it to me. They weren't home.
(Re: school email that blocks any emails not whitelisted by the school: that's great for kids as are all parental controls for young ones, but 16-year-olds really should be getting used to using an email that belongs to them, not an institution.)
I asked if the homework was on a paper handout, or in a book, or on the computer. She said it was on the computer. Great! I asked her where it was saved. She didn't know. I asked her to search for the name of the file. She said she already did that and now it was on her screen. Then, she said to me: "You can just search for it yourself - it's Chapter 5, page 11."
This is because homework is on the school's website, in her math class's homework section, which is where she searched. For her, that was "searching the internet."
Her concepts of "on my computer" "on the internet" or "on my school's website" are all the same thing. If something is displayed on the monitor, it's "on the internet" and "on my phone/tablet/computer" and "on the school's website."
She doesn't understand "upload" or "download," because she does her homework on the school's website and hits a "submit" button when she's done. I asked her how she shares photos and stuff with friends; she said she posts to Snapchat or TikTok, or she AirDrops. (She said she sometimes uses Insta, though she said Insta is more "for old people"). So in her world, there's a button for "post" or "share," and that's how you put things on "the internet".
She doesn't know how it works. None of it. And she doesn't know how to use it, either.
Also, none of them can type. Not a one. They don't want to learn how, because "everything is on my phone."
And you know, maybe that's where we're headed. Maybe one day, everything will be on "my phone" and computers as we know them will be a thing of the past. But for the time being, they're not. Students need to learn how to use computers. They need to learn how to type. No one is telling them this, because people think teenagers are "digital natives." And to an extent, they are, but the definition of that has changed radically in the last 20-30 years. Today it means "everything is on my phone."

Week 1 - I’m a grad student!
This week was one of the hardest I’ve ever experienced. The learning curve to being a full-time working parent and grad student is STEEP. All the planning in the world couldn’t have prepared me for this. A few reflections (and wins!) from this week:
Reading textbooks and academic research is WAY different than my current guilty pleasure - Diana Gabaldon’s “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone”. My eyes can’t seem to keep the words straight and jump around the electronic page. I long for a physical textbook (it’s on back order). That said, I do love the searchability (but I am an old and can also use an index :-)).
I completely over thought my first discussion post and assignment, but I got them in earlier than the deadlines. AND I did get a 100 on my first quiz! Now I anxiously await the discussion and assignment grades
Community is EVERYTHING! Just like my Women in Testing community, this cohort is amazingly welcoming and helpful as we learn together. We quickly found smaller study groups to share tips and check our thinking and help each other through the week
Office hours are important. Ignore the “optional”. I can’t make it to both for personal/family reasons, but my community has my back (and I have theirs). We share notes and talk about important things, like HOW TO READ A RESEARCH ARTICLE (start to finish? Oh no. Abstract first. Then conclusions. Then the stuff in the middle).
I’m also now not the same reader as I was in my youth. I need assistive technology. Bigger font. Better contrast. Read aloud options. Reading online triggered three migraines. Ugh. Keyboard navigation. As someone that’s been in Ed tech for 17 years some of the solutions I used this week PAIN me after having tested for accessibility.
BioSig? Lockdown browser? Security theater I say. I’m too old and worked too hard to even be tempted to cheat for what I want out of this degree. I’m actually offended it’s a thing. (Psst. It’s also ableist).
But enough about my experiences. What did we go over? This week was an intro to I-O psych
What exactly IS industrial and organizational psychology? A form of applied psychology, I-O psychology is the science of human behavior as it pertains to work. Industrial psychology aspects cover topics such as employee selection, performance management, procedures and processes, etc. Organizational psychology tends to look at areas like leadership, teamwork, and more. It’s rare to study one over the other, given the impact each has on “the other side”. My preference though right now is organizational ;-)
It was fascinating to see the impact of I-o psych throughout historical events. From selection methods in the army in World War I through more classification methods in World War II, an impact on civil rights and Americans with Disabilities acts. I’d never thought of it from that perspective before. And if you’ve never heard of Lillian Gilbreth go look her up. Too tired to write more about her right now :-)
One area that gives me pause, and I kind of dread the course, is employee selection methods. If science tells us that selection tests work, wtf happened to me? On paper I did not make sense. I had to take the Computer Programmer Aptitude and Battery test to get my job. I am pretty sure someone told me I did awful (omg I hate tests!). We have also since done away with that required part of the interview process. How do we ensure we consider the context of the individual? How do we check our biases and explore what biases may be introduced in these tests? Well, at least I have a few questions to go after when it’s time.
Another interesting thing we discussed was the scientist-practitioner gap. It’s almost like this field needs its own form of DevRel to make sure the science is making its way to the practitioners.
Anyway, a hard, but good week teeing up topics for the future - glad to see I’m at least still interested in (even if skeptical… hello performance management! It’s totally review season here and I still haven’t written mine up).
That’s all for now. Week 2 will be interesting as I’m slammed in work and life, but I have a tiny bit more confidence having made it through week 1. 1 down, 79-ish to go!).
Thanks to everyone that has reached out and supported me so far - especially on the days I wanted to quit (yes, already at least three of those). But especially to my husband, best friend and partner, Scott, who has been a tremendous help and encouraged me to stick with it as I cried myself to sleep on more than one occasion.

Professor Blanket Accusing Students of Cheating - is this normal?
A little more than a month ago, like 2/3rds into the semester, the professor for my elementary statistics class left his adjunct position to work somewhere else. He was replaced with a new professor, who I'll call Professor C.
The set up for this asynchronous, fully online course remained exactly the same as the first professor set it up, with three total exams for the semester and homework assignments on Cengage (and only Cengage--we did not use MindTap.) The first two exams went by without a hitch and were graded fairly quickly by the first professor, and he reported absolutely no concerns of cheating.
However, Professor C sent out an email to what, I believe, are all students in his Spring Elementary Statistics course. I'm super confused about the wording for what this means for me, so I'm posting the entirety below because I think exact wording is important here:
" I apologize for the delay in final grades being posted, but unfortunately there has been a lot of cheating on the final exam and the process of gathering evidence of cheating has slowed down my ability to grade. Right now, I have a sizable list of students who cheated and therefore will be failing the entire class and a Violation of Academic Integrity report will be filled out about the incident.
But, if you email me and you tell me in detail how you cheated, who you cheated with, and you don't withhold any information, I will make you a deal. In return for admitting to cheating on the final exam, I will give you a zero for the exam, I will not investigate the previous two tests for any other evidence of cheating, and I will suggest to Academic Integrity that no further action must be taken after getting a zero on the final. So if you cheated on the final exam, it would be wise to come clean now.
I am working as fast as I can and I hope to have your grades posted soon. I will try to email everyone once they have been submitted. If you have any questions, please let me know but it may take me a bit to respond to everyone. "
My first question is - is it normal for professors to send out emails like this? Again, I am not advocating for cheating, but sending an email out like this feels unethical at best.
Secondly, since this course uses only Cengage (not MindTap) and Blackboard (with no proctoring extensions or browsers)... what "sizeable evidence" could he be even be referring to? I think accusing students of cheating without any type of proctoring to back it up doesn't make sense, and again, feels super unethical. If he really had this evidence he's talking about, why would he offer us this type of deal anyways? Wouldn't a professor typically just report it and move on?
And lastly, he mentions early on that he'll be "failing the entire class and a violation of academic integrity report will be filed". I did not cheat, but I don't know how I'd PROVE that I didn't cheat. I really need this class for my future plans, and I don't know if I should be worried, or what I can do to 'protect' myself.
I know he says if we have questions that we can email him, but he seems extremely overworked, and if I'm being honest -- I'm a reluctant to email him because I do NOT think he has my best interest in mind.
Tl;dr:
Brand new adjunct professor talks about collecting evidence of cheating on the final--UNproctored--exam of an asynchronous, fully online course. He essentially gave us all a "plea deal" if we admitted to cheating, and detailed how and who we cheated with.
Is it normal for professors to do shit like this? How can he even gather evidence of cheating when we didn’t use a lockdown browser or download any proctoring extensions EVER? WHAT IS GOING ON

here’s a fun topic, has anyone ever been falsely accused of cheating/plagiarism?
i was accused once in a creative writing class bc someone downloaded my file to read it and then accidentally submitted mine as their own so we both were confronted by the professor and it was horrible but it became clear in the end that i didn’t cheat. it’s one of the most horrifying things to me academically. my academic integrity is so important to me.
so now that one of my current professors has sent out an email about how people were cheating on camera with a lockdown browser and the people he suspects will be hearing from him, i’m freaking out bc i have a tendency to talk to myself when I test (especially when i’m taking it at home and not disturbing anyone) so i’m terrified that he thinks i was talking to someone else, bc he says someone was on the phone getting answers. i just am trying to put it out of my mind until something else happens bc hopefully he’s talking about someone else. i mean the difference between someone cheating over the phone and someone talking quietly to themselves should be clear but idk.
