Tips for voice workers - Consejos para Locutores

Even though J.A Meca focuses on broadcasters and so, these tips are useful for any voice worker, and I would love for teachers to try these! 

Avoid being monotonous (for teachers: do not read the powerpoint)

Change your tones to play with their attention (very much number one)

Don’t tense your neck muscles

Don’t imitate others (We are all different, don’t worry much)

Low tones are more serious

Clean and bright voices are easy to trust (lack of energy in your voice is going to be rejected almost immediately)

Don’t make a pause after linkers

Every word can hold different meanings, regarding of the melodic pronunciation you choose, so be careful

Look at your audience to make contact and, at the same time, to understand when they are interested in the topic, have doubts or are tired, to act accordingly. 

Stand still. Your body is a musical instrument, it does wonders when it is properly tuned.

Learn how to do diaphragmatic breathing (breathe with your belly).*

This is a very interesting book for you to understand every system involved in talking and breathing. In fact, it teaches you to breathe properly, explains and corrects diction, gives you ideas to warm up your voice and even talks about radio and dubbing. It is one of my favorite manuals. You can buy (in Spanish) a copy here.

Aunque sean consejos para locutores, creo que estos puntos son ideales para cualquier persona que trabaje con la voz, y digo esto especialmente … ¡para los profesores! 

Evita la monotonía

Haz reclamos con la voz

No tenses el cuello

No imites (todos somos diferentes, no te compliques)

Los tonos graves aportan credibilidad

El timbre resonante, claro y brillante aporta seguridad (las voces apagadas denotan falta de energía, lo que provoca rechazo)

No deben aparecer pausas después de palabras átonas, ni tampoco en elementos de cohesión sintáctica o semántica.

Toda palabra puede tener distintos significados según la forma melódica en la que se pronuncie. 

Mira hacia tu interlocutor(es) para incidir sobre esa persona y, a su vez, recibir señales de interés, duda o cansancio y poder adaptarte acorde. 

Endereza el cuerpo. Es prácticamente un instrumento musical, bien colocado puede hacer maravillas con la voz y la respiración.

He sacado estos puntos de “La Sustancia de la Voz” de J.A Meca. Es un libro interesantísimo en el que describe cómo funciona todo el sistema para poder hablar y respirar. De hecho, te enseña a respirar correctamente, te explica los fallos de dicción y te los corrige, te da ideas para calentar la voz y practicar la dicción, incluso te habla del doblaje y la radio. Es uno de mis manuales favoritos. Podéis comprar su libro pinchando aquí.
