the recent flurry of activity had slowed somewhat now, and the healers dispersed to various corners of the infirmary's hushed candle-lit length. the apprentice set down the empty laundry basket and stretched out her tired shoulders, glancing up at the older woman who was sorting the fresh bandages from the linen chest.

"oh - I can do that, don't worry." having something in her hands was better fun anyway than standing uselessly about, and she slipped in to take her superior's place. "anyway, he looks a bit like a lost pup and I don't think he'll be going anywhere until we let him in - and I told him I'd ask."

"the one who helped bring the guard in, earlier tonight?" the older healer's gaze flicked to one of the curtained-off alcoves at the opposite end of the room. "you don't mean to say he's still waiting there... surely he's got better things to do now, with the festival down in the city."

"I think that was where they were," the apprentice said, carefully, and began to twist one strip of clean bandage-cloth into a tight roll, pinching the end between her fingers for steadying. "and something happened, and now they're here. he seems quite upset about it all."

"first time I've ever seen one of those lordly folk spend as many tears on the folk who bleed in their defense," said the healer, half under her breath, then louder: "well, go fetch him, if you think he'd be any comforted by it. I don't know that the poor boy in the bed there will hear or remember one way or the other."

the apprentice fumbled for a pin to fasten the bandage-roll, and thought of the young noble's tearstained face, and nodded. "all right. thanks. I'll go tell him."

outside, the young noble was still waiting, head tilted back to rest against the stonework of the wall and arms crossed to huddle into his rather inadequate velvet cloak. he blinked and startled as the apprentice came up, eyes wide with questions unasked.

"they say you can come along in. he's still asleep, but you can see him anyway."

he shadowed her on the way into the infirmary, quiet as if feeling out of his element, nodding with half-averted eyes to the healers at their work. she stood back a little once they reached the half-curtained alcove that was their destination, and nodded at him to go ahead of her.

the apprentice wouldn't have called the guard boy, herself. he was older than her, and maybe older than the young noble by a little, or else perhaps the starts of silver threads through his mousey hair had come early. but that was hard to tell, sometimes. the lines of pain at the corners of his wide mouth, the faintly gray and transparent cast of his pale skin, those made the guessing more difficult. the slow rise and fall of his chest under the blankets triggered an occasional wince and grimace even in his sleep.

"how is he?" the young noble's voice was low. he sat down in the wooden chair next to the guard's cot, hands working together, the stone in his signet ring winking dully in the candlelight.

"it's too early to say for certain."

"no, but if you - had to guess."

she didn't like watching the bright hints of desperation flicker across his face, but she did know he deserved the truth, anyway.

"the blade pierced a lung and he lost a lot of blood as well, before he came here and while the healers were patching him up. we gave him something for the pain and that's why he's asleep now. if the wound heals clean, he'll recover with rest and time. if infection sets in - "

considering and rejecting several ways to put the next bit took long enough that the young noble had, maybe, divined her intent; anyhow, his eyes left her face in the pause, and he reached out instead to touch the guard's hand laid limp on the cover.

"Valin." he spoke more quietly still, now. "I - I was such a fool. you were right, tonight, and I didn't - listen at all, and so - this is my fault. and by rights it should have been me, you know, who took the consequences - "

for a long still stretch there was nothing spoken in their little circle of silence, only the soft rasp of the guard's breathing, and the stir and motion beyond the curtains as the business of the infirmary went on. but by and by the guard's long fingers twitched, as if in delayed response, and though his eyes were still closed his lips moved to shape unheard words. the effort of speaking made him cough, sharply, and give a low moan of pain quickly bitten back.

"shh. you don't have to answer." the young noble leaned closer. "only know that I'm sorry, and I didn't deserve that, what you did for me."

"m'lord." the guard's voice was a thready whisper, his eyelids heavy with drugged weakness. "fool - maybe - but safe - yes?"

"yes. I'm safe. we got away."

"ah. that's - good." there was a crooked hint of a smile on his face, casting him younger despite the lines of pain. "stop talking - like that. stupid guard I'd be - if I couldn't - "

the coughing caught him again, and the young noble looked up at the apprentice in sudden worry; she knelt down and slipped an arm under the guard's shoulders, easing a second pillow up behind him with her other hand. the rag she wiped his mouth with came away with bloody streaks.

"when your lord tells you not to talk I think he means it," she said, because being almost a real healer did still give you some privilege to scold people when necessary. "breathe, and just rest for now. I'll chase him off so he can get some rest too, don't worry."

his half-open eyes focused on hers for an instant, cloudy blue in the candlelight, and slipped past to find the young noble waiting beyond. the smile returned, briefly, before his eyes closed again, each breath shaking through him.

"you'd best be going now," she said, over her shoulder, trying to gentle her voice to soothe the stricken look she saw on the young noble's face in that moment. "but you can come back tomorrow, if you like."

maybe she should have asked the healers first about that. but surely one poor worried noble wouldn't be too much trouble, tomorrow morning. hopefully - she thought, then, as she helped the guard lie back on the pillows - hopefully there'd be good news for him then, too.

Which sounds great that you guys played it. For whoever never play it thats fine too bcus I know that 1. Its in Japanese and its hard to get the game (Eventhough theres english ver but they discontinue most of the recent part like in Japanese ver game) 2. its a gacha game that means you had to buy something if you want to get something premium sets that is cool but we'll talk about that later

Second question is how do you guys feel after they announced that they gonna kill this game.

I can see that most of you guys are really sad because of the one thing, the fucking AUs. yeah I know that bcus one time i played it before but had to quit bcus i know you have to buy somehting that you wanted but i feel wasted to do it so I quit after that (i never pay the gacha sets btw all i do is to pray to get lucky)(i only got lucky once)

seems like 4% really angry about the announcement or maybe they found out about it. Whichever is it I understand that. 17% agrees that gacha game sucks including this game and thats funny I agree to that. Only one person (2%) so fucking glad this game is coming to gone.

My thoughts, which is not relevant but I want to put this jic lol: When I was play the game when it was new I found it a little bit of fun where is sometimes you can do anything or to choose not to control anything if you have the chance like one time I can just play the game while I'm on lunch or something. But hey that was like uhhhhh 5 years ago? I stopped it few year ago but I still keeping up with the game with the AUs sets update and such till the end.

So. Here’s a thing I never do. Post written material. And yet, good Lord, here it be. Wonders never cease.

Jack’s childhood is an endless source of inspo for me. I’ve always had a fascination with how a character’s beginnings shape them into the person they grow up to be. None more so than this lil lad right here, who’s childhood has been brought to you by Angst™. (Aka, the wonderful @safyresky​, and all her lovely lore).

Sooo. Here is Jack, being a troubled little eight/nine-hundred-year-old (he’s mistaken for a slightly younger kid here bc... well, let’s face it. He’s not very big) and, uh, bumping into a familiar face, shall we say. I’m sure you can guess whomst, despite me having removed her name -- just from the bit of dialogue at the end. Love a good parallel, me.

Excerpt is lifted from an absolute behemoth of a fic (150k and counting, whoo) that... may never see the light of day. But I’ve been enjoying writing young!Jack so much, that I just wanted to share a lil nugget.

Without spoiling anything, I’ll say that this is not technically time travel. I mean, not in the traditional sense. Just, Complex/Dark Magic. And, er. Memory... stuff?

Jack’s kiddo design is... I mean, this is just one of many iterations. I’ve drawn him with flat, brown hair. With sticky-up hair. With half-frozen, half-thawed hair. Here his hair is as floofy/spiky as it is when he's an adult (frozen adult, that is) but instead of floofing backwards it floofs forwards, bc he hasn’t learnt to style it yet. He’s only smol, after all.

For the longest time now, he’s existed in my mind as this precocious, knobbly-kneed, slightly gawky little chap. How accurate that is... 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it’s where we’ve ended up.

sense of belonging in deltarune

i've connected the dots. i've connected them.

few disclaimers before we begin:

- THIS POST IS INCOMPLETE. i accidentally posted it before i could add any screenshots :_] but the text is largely done so ya (i am opting to leave it up on tumblr)

- this analysis is made by someone who probs isn't qualified to make them, so do feel free to rebut (sensibly!) or correct me

- this analysis may assume a lot of things, some based on or influenced by popular fanon. i am merely linking my thoughts to form some kind of understanding.

- someone might've said all of this before. if so, i am completely unaware of this.

- only two chapters are out as of now! deltarune is not yet complete

- LOMNG. this post is LOONG.

the $!$! squad, the legend

kris, susie, and ralsei all find some kind of belonging in the dark world and its prophecy.

ralsei has been known to devote his entire life to the prophecy.

the lullaby he sings in battle is to the tune of his motif, the legend. this could hint at him finding comfort and security in the prophecy.

he makes it a point to express how glad he is to have met kris and susie. he also makes it a point to express his obligation to serve lightners, even when the darkners around don't evidently share the same belief.

the prophecy, and being part of the $!$! squad, gives ralsei a purpose and direction in his life that he can fall back on. his duties, albeit questionably rigid, make him feel useful, and thus give him his sense of belonging.

susie is an outcast in hometown. she implies that she doesn't have a room of her own, and has low standards for food.

she is initially wary of the dark world, but very quickly changes her mind, asking kris to come again the following day.

her main reason for her "evil arc" is how she is revered by lancer, juxtaposed with when ralsei criticises her contribution to the squad.

a little detail is that susie is still willing to return to the dark world, even with the knowledge that nobody will notice they are actually saving the world. neither noelle nor berdly remember the events of chapter 2 as real, and susie seems content with this, even telling noelle none of it was real herself.

notably, susie also gets her very own room from ralsei in chapter 2, which is implied to be new to her. the room has a bed for her to sleep in and actual food for her to eat.

this is important as susie will sleep wherever she can, and eat whatever she can. susie is treated with more hospitality by ralsei and the dark world, having better living conditions.

as the light world shuns her, the dark world welcomes her. susie has gradually found a better place for herself with the $!$! squad, even if none of it matters to the other lightners.

we know little about kris and their emotions. though, we can infer a fair deal from the game.

when asking toriel about kris, she tells us of the headband, which kris wore all the time to be like their family.

in their own bedroom, kris' side is barren of trophies or decoration, while asriel's is not. in their dark world room, there are trophies on the shelf, and a shelf for keepsakes.

kris enjoys being with susie, especially given her strong will to defy the soul. kris could possibly be enthusiastic about the dark world, and possibly about being with susie.

they feel as though it gives them accomplishment while asriel is getting all the glory in hometown. their will increases as susie's does, and the dark world gives them opportunities to get closer.

the $!$! squad is radiating with belonging, and it's generally a secure place for all involved.

the secret bosses, nothing matters

having explored belonging and purpose, i feel the need to touch on the lack thereof.

jevil and spamton seem to have lost their place in the world, and because of this, the grand scheme of things seems bleak.

spamton has lost pretty much everything in his life. money, fame, friends, all disappearing rapidly. as he notices that kris has a soul, he latches onto that and doesn't let go.

spamton desperately seeks to reclaim his sense of belonging. he refuses to admit that his success has vanished. his purpose has been taken from him, and this is taking a huge toll on whatever is left of himself.

jevil, on the other hand, seems not to care that his place has faded away. he insists that he is free, and that everyone else is not.

he sings that he can do anything, yet he remains locked up.

nothing matters to him, and he accepts this as enlightenment. he flaunts his belief joyfully, for he too denies that he's no longer who he used to be.

both jevil and spamton are denied of their belonging completely, which is what led to their insanity. eventually, though, they find strength in aiding the $!$! squad as weapons and armour.

by extension, seam seems to have been caught in jevil's despair. they feel their worldview getting darker, yet darker. they appear to hold the belief that nothing truly matters, and that the end is the only way things will ever eventually go.

even susie, towards the start of deltarune, establishes that our choices don't matter.

the vessel sequence is very telling of this. you don't choose who you get to be. putting us in kris' body rings as a demonstration of random circumstance.

the word "dark" is used a lot with seam and the secret bosses. not only does this suggest relation to gaster, but it serves as a symbol for this brand of thought.

through establishing that the choices you make don't matter, and your place in the world may leave you, the game urges us to form our own belonging, and forge our own paths despite all the chaos.

closing thoughts

i find the strong themes of belonging within the $!$! squad to be very intriguing, especially their ability to win over the secret bosses. their character arcs are still incomplete, and i'd love to see the direction they go with them.

In terms of what Mel would ACTUALLY wear to the beach, though…?? I mean, you Google her name and what do you get? Tails and tiddies. The woman just loves being naked, what can I say? But alas. She, too, burns exceedingly easily, and so at Lucy’s behest (doctor, and all that) she’d -- grudgingly, I'd like to stress -- throw on some Ariel/Little Mermaid shell-style bikini-type-Thing, plus a hat, sunglasses and copious amounts of sunscreen.

I briefly considered having her dress to the hilt, like Winter, because that seemed eminently funny to me, but given her affinity for the sea I think she'd want to be wearing as little as possible. And her outfit would presumably be fashioned from natural materials/elements.

She'd spend the day swimming, lounging and/or summoning increasingly large waves for others to surf. Luce, maybs. Or Tintin. The latter riding >insert terrifying, Lovecraftian sea beast here<, lol.

And, being something of a drinker herself, she'd probs spend a certain amount of time at the bar, too. Her drink of choice alternates between a good ol' fashioned G&T and a Dark N' Stormy. Double, in either case. Which she'd get for free, seeing as her rizz game when not crush-directed is actually p strong!

I’m gonna rope the rest of the gang into this, bc why not?? (Hope that's okay, given that this Q was for Mel specifically!)

If by some miracle someone -- Tintin, maybe; persuasive as she is -- has managed to drag Seb away from his dragon-like hoard of reading material, dusty teacups and old, VHS-recorded BBC docus, I would imagine he'd simply wear his suit to the beach. Indeed, I’m not sure he owns any other clothes. Just the same suit, over and over. Like SpongeBob. 

He’d roll his trousers up to his knees, throw his tie over his shoulder and paddle about in the surf for a bit, likely discovering some interesting Specimens in the process, which he’d inevitably spend the rest of the day studying.

Maybe he'd even get stung by a jellyfish. Because that just seems like a very Sebastian thing to do. :) He'd find the experience absolutely fascinating, I'm sure!

If not surfing then Palatyne is wayyy off in the distance, visiting more of her sea monster pals. She can dive to crRAZY depths! Oh, and she was the one who packed the picnic (she loves baking). Melior is skulking about in some dark, damp cave nearby, doing God knows what. I've very little idea of what she gets up to most of the time and quite honestly I don't want to know.

If we’re going by ML lore then Lucy's there too. Reading, sun-bathing or engaging in some form of water-based sport. She and Tin’d take turns being the Mom Friend; Lucy more so bc in this universe she’s a medic and therefore Very Sun Safety Conscious! So she’d chase people around with sunscreen until they ran out of steam (girl's got mad stamina when it comes to anything health-related). Maybe she'd even put the stuff in a water gun and squirt it at passersby, regardless of who they are/whether she knows them or not. 😂 She'd also surreptitiously order Mel and whomever else several waters/soft drinks for every alcoholic beverage they consumed.

I’m thinking she probs burns p badly too! Or at the very least comes away having gained a number of freckles. 🥰🥰

The day probs ends w a beach bonfire and a meal prepared by Tintin. Seb and would Luce get all excited about how clear this sky is, allowing them to do a bit of stargazing! Seb would give Mel a piggyback back to the teleportation point, bc she's so sleeeeepy(/drunk, lmao).

(Bonus: If worlds collide and Jack tips up at any point Mel'd make it her mission to try to wipe him out with one of her Big Waves! Whether she’d actually succeed? Remains to be seen. Mans is slippery.... 🤨 And a good surfer, I'm guessing! (Is his board made out of ice? Bc that’d be RAD.))
