Pharoah Sanders - Antibes Jazz Festival, Juan-Les-Pins, France, July 21-22, 1968
Two phenomenal early sets from Pharoah Sanders, who sadly left this earthly plane late last month. I had seen and heard bits of these performances before, but never the whole thing, gloriously filmed by French television. The only complaint is that it's in black and white — we need full-color to fully enjoy the sweet outfits that Pharoah and company are sporting here. Oh well: the music is vibrant enough, with Lonnie Liston Smith, Norris Jones and Majid Shabazz (plus an unnamed conga player at times) joining Sanders for 80 minutes of deep astral traveling. Welcome to love ...
Pharoah says: I’m always trying to make something that might sound bad sound beautiful in some way. I’m a person who just starts playing anything I want to play, and make it turn out to be maybe some beautiful music.
