Noelle comes over to chat with Iseul, and she asks her about her engagement and her fiancée. Iseul’s eyes light up as she talks about Grace, and how beautiful and smart and sweet and funny she is. “I met her and she has this Simlish accent and is so polite but by our third date we were watching a horror movie in our home clothes and she was cursing like Jordan Woolsey*. It made me fall in love with her even more.” Iseul says, and Noelle grins. “Aw, you guys sound like a cute couple.” She says, and Iseul smiles. She shows Noelle a few photos of Grace, and Noelle waggles her brows playfully. “She’s very cute.” She says and Iseul nods before moon eyeing the photos. Luna comes over to hug Iseul and talk with her for a few minutes before heading back to Chrissy and Tess.

Megan joins the two of them and ask what they’re chatting about. “Gracie.” Iseul says with a goofy smile on her face. Megan grins and shakes her head. “You're always talking about her, Issy.” She teases before adding, “But it’s sweet, and you and Gracie are cute together.” Iseul smiles too. “Thanks Megs, and I feel the same about you and Tess. You guys are so lovey dovey and cute.” She says, and Megan nods. “Yeah, Tessie’s amazing.” Megan says softly. Noelle rolls her eyes. “You guys are going into full cheese-ball mode.” She teases. “I can’t help it, Ellie, your sister is so gorgeous ” Megan teases, and Noelle makes a goofy disgusted face before leaving the two of them.

Iseul smiles at Megan. “I had a lot of fun with you, Tess, and Ellie.” She says, and Megan smiles. “I did too, I’m glad you’re here, Issy. Today, and just in my life.” She adds, and Iseul smiles, her eyes crinkling at the corners and making her look even more handsome. “I’m glad you’re in my life too, Megs.” She adds, and Megan grins.

They chat about Iseul’s upcoming wedding, and Megan asks why Iseul had to propose to Grace instead of Grace proposing. “She wanted the traditional thing of being proposed to, which I get. Plus, it’s alright, we’re going shopping to get my ring soon.” Iseul says, shrugging. “I would propose to you.” Megan blurts out in her still tipsy state before turning red. “I mean, in an alternate universe** if we were together or something, because you deserve to be proposed to as well, Kang.” She rambles as Iseul bites back a smile. "Thanks Megs." Iseul says. Iseul says her goodbyes to the rest of the bachelorette party and then Megan, who nods and tells her to get home safe before hugging her.

Just watched Jurassic Word Dominion. I loved it. Never realized how much I missed Ellie, Alan, and Ian until seeing them again. Ian is still my favorite, as always, but I missed the other two so much too. Owen and Maisie are amazing. Claire got on my nerves a bit, but she was okay. Kayla is so freaking cool and Ramsay came out of no where but needs a hug, I think. Henry Wu was alright, I guess. I liked Wu’s character better in the book anyway though. Dodgeson was horrible. I remember him from book 2 and he’s still so conniving and rotten.

I could probably talk about the little stuff for hours, but I’m not going to due to some people not having seen the movie yet. 🥲

well anyway i don't see adwd!theon's time in winterfell as a reckoning to the tune of too late does this heedless villain see the error of his ways or any such narrative justice. personally i find it the most thematically interesting and, stay with me here, hopeful of theon's three "returns" i.e. his return to pyke, his acok return to winterfell, and finally the adwd return in question. this probably hinges on how of late i've grown more comfortable identifying winterfell as a decimated metropolis, yet a thriving necropolis—a place where the dead have been dead longer than the living have been living. without getting too much into that, i'll leave it with how siri hustvedt paraphrases lewis mumford: "people want to live close to the burial places of their ancestors, to whom they are drawn with mingled feelings of worship and dread, and that is how the city is born."

in acok, winterfell died when it was divested of starks (a symbolic death of winterfell as there are none left to inherit it) and burnt to the ground (a physical death). my point in all this is to say there is mutuality, a symbiosis that characterizes theon's third and final "return." he comes as reek, horrified to hell by ramsay and roose. theon's dehumanization has taken from him both a physical identity—his looks have changed so drastically that he is unrecognizable—and a metaphysical one—he is no longer afforded even the nominal identity of theon greyjoy. the reason i keep putting return in quotes, which i will now stop doing, is because obviously that's a myth. in reality, return occurs in the memory, and if memories contradict then returns cannot happen even there. theon cannot go back to a time prior to his torture. on pyke his family rejects him ("your blood and your heir." lord balon grunted. "we shall see."), in acok winterfell refuses any memory of him in lieu of classifying him as an invader (she gaped at him as if he were some stranger), and in adwd he remarks that winterfell is no longer "the castle he remembered from the summer of his youth." there are no homecomings.

however, a big thing that occurs in adwd is that we see both theon and winterfell being raised back to life. these two plots are connected or perhaps even the same. reek is forced to reclaim theon greyjoy in order to renew the stark claim via jeyne-as-arya. by doing this, by becoming theon, the stark return is recognized, and winterfell is revived. the proof is in the pudding: winterfell rapidly becomes a site of conflict thanks to it's value being restored. we see that jon is unwilling to renounce his vows in order to be named lord stark until the situation with ramsay and jeyne-as-arya comes to a head. elsewhere in the north, it's suddenly time to dust off those banners and rescue valiant ned's precious little girl. wyman manderly makes his way to winterfell only after sending davos on a quest to retrieve rickon stark. in each case, it requires a living stark to make winterfell any sort of prize.

back to theon. thanks to a nifty sidequest with barbrey, theon is also the one to find the entryway to the crypts, which represents a limb of sorts to the structure of winterfell. he is the one the heart tree speaks to. two bodies destroyed yet they know one another / know each other's names. what does the beating heart of winterfell say to him? "theon." what does he say back? "the old gods... know me." okay. self-recognition through the other. love it. love it so much in the face of that whole spiel tyrion once gave:

Tyrion had only the vaguest memory of Theon Greyjoy from his time with the Starks. A callow youth, always smiling, skilled with a bow; it was hard to imagine him as Lord of Winterfell. The Lord of Winterfell would always be a Stark.

He remembered their godswood; the tall sentinels armored in their grey-green needles, the great oaks, the hawthorn and ash and soldier pines, and at the center the heart tree standing like some pale giant frozen in time. He could almost smell the place, earthy and brooding, the smell of centuries, and he remembered how dark the wood had been even by day. That wood was Winterfell. It was the north. I never felt so out of place as I did when I walked there, so much an unwelcome intruder. He wondered if the Greyjoys would feel it too. The castle might well be theirs, but never that godswood.

so yes. i am contextualizing theon's final return as a rebirth, actually. worship and dread.

this is yuki's passion project. the racing was fun while it lasted but this is what he really wants to do with his life. he sets it up with his own money and has a lot of fun designing the interior and the menu and every tiny thing about it, it's his baby

pierre, who knows NOTHING about cooking and could burn water, loves to look over yuki's shoulder all the time and gives "notes" like "i think you're chopping those onions wrong" and "is that much spice really a good idea" until yuki locks him out of the kitchen

pierre is put in a people facing job which has the intended effect of helping him feel useful, and the unintended effect of scaring away annoying customers bc pierre is a rude sarcastic bitch when he's not in a good mood. he's also insane about enforcing the dress code. a girl showed up in sandals once and was kicked out bc pierre argued sandals and shoes aren't the same thing, no becky i don't care that they go well with your dress. which is so last season, by the way.

pierre has the spice tolerance of a newborn baby so yuki usually gets guanyu or valtteri to taste food for him. alex's opinion is always "add ketchup" which is disgusting. george is too british so he's automatically out. lewis tastes the vegan dishes. yuki adds a special "dog menu" and "vegan dog menu" to widen his clientele (aka appeal to roscoe)

it's pierre's job to source the ingredients and he takes it very seriously, nothing goes even a second past expiry date, and he won't admit it but it's because he lives in abject fear of gordon ramsay showing up with a camera crew one day and humiliating him in front of the entire world

The Great Vinyl Purge.

I had a funny feeling during my last music-shopping victory spree. When I furiously dug and came across certain titles, I constantly paused on myself wondering if I already had them in my collection. Dollar records make way for hasty decisions and later regretted when you come home to see those same titles you purchased already in your library.

I audited my shelves to see doubles I didn’t realize I once had. Money well spent if only the first time. After that, you’re donating to your local record stores. That’s what’s called charity. With me buying vinyl faster than a cheetah hunting down his prey, I’m running out of space. I’m not realizing I’m spending money on records I already have, so they had to go. There were many impulse purchases made thanks to low price tags, a kick for the classics, and very little care of the artist other than the year they were made.

There were many duplicates from artists I’m familiar with. Components from my Atari and Nintendo youth in Belinda Carlisle (The Go-Go’s) and Phil Collins (Genesis), jazz-fusion artists Tom Scott and Ramsay Lewis, and an extra from Minnie Riperton. The Doors’ Greatest Hits had to go as I mistakenly bought a copy recently before the purge, and one from France Joli that I shouldn’t have had because I tried finding a song that wasn’t on there.

Not only did I take the duplicates out, but I also took records out of my collection I never listened to. Two titles from The Who and Melba Montgomery that I purchased at an Amityville veteran’s hall left the library because I literally never played them. Doobie Brothers, Nicolette Larson, and many children’s records rescued from a sidewalk dump from people who didn’t know better. They had to go. A few days later I woke up one morning and asked myself why I have almost the entire vinyl discography of Seals & Croft and The 5th Dimension?

And then these three: Al Jolson, M.C. Osso, and Justin Wilson …Meets Jean (John) Barleycorn. Those were three records my dad found ages ago from another stack tossed out for the morning pick-up. That was when I was oblivious to vinyl and record collecting. Hell, we didn’t have a turntable back then. How did I somehow keep them and why did I keep a fucking cajun comedy (?) record? I was better than this.

Now that the vinyl purge was over, what did I do? I had no time creating a Discogs and wait for these records to be sold piece by piece. No record-stores would take them as the children’s records are water-damaged with dry mold. The only other option? Take the easy way out and give them to someone who appreciates them. Why? Friends and family had been charitable to me in the past. A no-longer-staffer of WUSB announced a roll-call for a huge vinyl giveaway donated to me, and later on most of those same records went to Syke. That’s the same Syke who ended up donating me some of his records he found in front of someone’s house; a customer of his who took her entire collection and threw them out in front of the curb. Not me. I give my gifts to a good home.

Once my dad found a collection of polka records and took them home. “What the fuck is this?” I asked him. There’s no way I’d be caught dead and Wee-Gee’d with polka records. Good thing this was right before WUSB’s 35th anniversary. I knew our resident polka lady Theresa was attending, so I donated my stacks to her. Problem solved. Caring is sharing and it goes both way, that is…when you’re not throwing your entire library out in the street.

So I gave them to J-Ro, host of WUSB’s Radio Free J-Ro, archivist, and vinyl fanatic. I dropped them off at the station in October and told him to come get it. He took home Carly Simon’s self-titled, Minnie Riperton’s Perfect Angel, Ramsay Lewis’ Tequila Mockingbird, Herb Alpert’s Rise, and whatever 5th Dimension records he didn’t have already. So that’s only 5% of the stack. As of now, most of it is still there. It’s now WUSB’s as far as I’m concerned. We have the space. Let ‘em deal with it.

Here’s all I parted with to make way for more records and books of my liking. Malcomb Forbes did say: “he / she who dies with the most toys wins.” Sometimes, it’s the nicer shinier ones that get you the victory.
