I don’t believe I’ve reviewed any Tom Fords even though it was Black Orchid and the Private Blends scents that lured me into the world of fragrance so many years ago. This is probably because the house is not even a shadow of its former self; it is unrecognizable.
Launched in 2007, a year following the release of Black Orchid, Tom Ford’s Private Blends was the vanguard in the fragrance industry. Beginning with Purple Patchouli, this early, exciting era of the house saw offerings like Tuscan Leather, Jasmin Rouge and others, many of which have been long discontinued. Among a sea of celebuscents, saccharine fruity florals and predictable gourmands that had so dominated the industry since the 90s, the Private Blends did not only seem singular, they were like revelations to someone like me who was not old enough to have been familiar with the greats of the 1980s and earlier. This era saw Ford at the forefront, with releases like Oud Wood (2007) that would be followed by what would become a tidal wave of Westernized ouds, starting with the likes of Kilian’s Pure Oud (2009) and Byredo’s Ouds (2010). I’d say this period ended in 2013 which saw the release of the Atelier d'Orient line - one of the last stand out lines of the house. 2013 was also the year the Oud line was expanded in an attempt to ride on the coat tails of Oud Wood’s success. Perhaps a suggestion the kind of commodification of the house that was to come.
The house changed with the rise of niche luxury fragrance houses in the 2014. It was around this time Estée Lauder began snapping up houses like Kilian and Frédéric Malle in a move that would transform the industry. As the niche market began to establish itself, Ford was no longer the only widely-distributed house pushing boundaries. Private Blends were still exciting in this period but were slowly shifting away from its innovate roots. Perhaps the last quality line from the house during this middle period was the Les Extraits Vert line, released in 2016, which wasn’t innovative so much as a retreat into 70s nostalgia. At this point, the fragrance market was also growing increasingly crowded. A new Tom Ford release (or release from other houses like Serge Lutens) just didn’t seem so special anymore.
For me, the nail in the Private Blends coffin and our current trash era began with the release of Fucking Fabulous in 2017. FF kicked off a cynical trend of crasser names paired with grossly inflated prices. Rather than an attempt to create a beautiful scent, FF seemed more like a product designed to see how far Lauder could push the price point for luxury fragrance.
Which brings us to the present day - Cherry Smoke, an opportunistic attempt to cash in on the success of Lost Cherry. What is there to say about it? The opening is pleasant enough. Syrupy macerated dark cherries and expensive leather drying down in a linear fashion to an abstract sweetness and synthetic oud smoke before finishing on banal white musks. It’s not horrific, it’s never scratchy or densely flat - but this is damning praise for a house that once released Noir de Noir. And I’m sorry to say that compared with Electric Cherry, a painfully generic fruity floral, Cherry Smoke is the better scent. Yours for an eye-watering CA$480/50 ml.
RIP Tom Ford Private Blends 2007-2017. After FF, I should have realized what I know now: you are dead to me. I’m sorry the house that initiated me into the world of fragrance has become so pathetic. Someone at Lauder, I beg of you, when the executives and accountants aren’t looking, please pull the plug.

August 2023 ~
Le Labo's city exclusive for Shanghai is new for this year - Myrrhe 55. At the center is the myrrh note, with accords of amber, white florals, animalic, and musk . Yet another myrrh-themed scent this autumn, Tom Ford Private blends are also releasing their own interpretation in September.
I wouldn't mind!

I like smelling weird things. Scents that are more conceptual than wearable are not a problem, but even I meet my match. Enter Red Hoba which officially weaned me off blind buys. It's interesting to review this one after Dunhill Egyptian Smoke because to the extent that papyrus is quintessentially Egyptian, these offer very different interpretations.  Red Hoba is part of Xerjoff's Shooting Stars series but there are no embers in this meteor. It is a cold rock buried in the earth, a warning sign of destruction. (The other warning sign is Red Hoba's almost €400 price, but I digress.) Evelyn O'Connell played by Rachel Weisz in the Mummy perfectly symbolizes this scent. As a character, she bridges intellectual and sensuous, male and female, past and present. Also as half British and half Egyptian her presence attempts to reconcile and justify the colonizer and the exploited. Disembodied and unisex, Red Hoba seems to hold many of the same tensions.  Described as gourmand, but beyond a faint opening of dried fruit, Red Hoba is primarily the scent of wet leather-bound parchment and dust which seems fitting for our Egyptologist Evelyn. In this way, Red Hoba's papyrus note is hyperrealistic. Combined with iris, it is a papery powdery ode to mold and must with very faint hints of jasmine and sandalwood in the background. There is a very mysterious, ancient and even ominous quality to Red Hoba that hints of myths and things buried in sand. However it is ultimately unpleasant. It is a watery facsimile of Egypt– diluted, bastardized, othered. A colonialist fantasy in love with death and excavation versus the red blooded present. I will take Dunhill's bright impressionistic stroke any day over this caricature.  -------------------------------------- #niche #nichefragrance #perfumista #instaperfume #perfume #fragrance  #perfumereview  #leather #smoke #spicy #woody #gourmand #luxury #luxuryperfume #edp #instaperfume #sotd  #woody #olfactoryart #Xerjoff https://www.instagram.com/p/CdQ6VhaOE3S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

hii my mutual bies recommended you to me as someone who knows a lot about perfumes :3 i would ask you to suggest something based on my vibes but as we aren't mutuals i will vaguely ask if you could please recommend me a scent suitable for an elegant femme fatale? 😔 i know it doesn't narrow it down but admittedly i don't know enough about scents to ask for something more specific except that i can say i don't like citrus-y notes and perfumes that are too heavy
thank you if you got this far 😭 and love your blog theme by the way :3
hi!! any friend of bies is a friend of mine, so i hope i can help!
when people say they don't like heavy perfumes, they usually mean one of two things (or both at once): perfumes that are strong in terms of sillage and staying power and that can be overpowering and headache-y for those of us who are more scent-sensitive, or perfumes that smell cloying or old-fashioned, which is far more subjective.
since i don't know any more specifics (feel free to send a follow-up ask if you'd like!), i'll go off of what bies suggested as well as what you said and give you a few suggestions to look into, hopefully covering different approaches:
athalia by parfums de marly: powdery, incense-y scent with a somber yet graceful iris at its heart. this is the first thing that came to mind when thinking of the archetypal vintage femme fatale; it has orange in the top notes, but it's worth sampling imo.
moscow by bpal: one of my favourite lily of the valley fragrances. smells like a rich woman that wears expensive soap like it's perfume, walking down the street on a sunny yet cold day with a lavish bouquet in her arms.
carmen 7 by alkemia: a more sensuous and gourmand scent, loads of pear, praline, lychee, jasmine and gardenia.
datura noir by serge lutens: less intense than the name suggests, but still very elegant. creamy lactonic tuberose, heliotrope, hints of coconut and bitter almonds.
peony couture by vilhelm parfumerie: goes onto the skin with the smoothness and precision of a vintage dior satin dress. peony and rose with a gorgeous woody incense base.
l'ombre dans l'eau by diptyque: a modernist take on a rose fragrance; green, a little bit bitter, dense with foliage, but the rose underneath is realistic and stunning. a bit of a different, fresher approach that conveys both elegance and thorns.
i have longer reviews of all of these on my blog; since i focus on niche and luxury perfumes, i would highly recommend ordering samples to try before you commit to a full bottle, especially if you're not sure what you like yet. best of luck, and please do report back if you find something you enjoy!
