Mt. Tabor Path Officially Opens
On April 1st, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) officially opened a new paved bike path and pedestrian accessway leading to Mt. Tabor Park from SE 64th Avenue and SE Division Street. Many parkgoers received a preview of the accessway during the weekend of March 23rd before crews reinstalled temporary fences for the week of March 25th. The April sunny weather attracted numerous residents of the…

The elephant in the room and we run outside
I asked my friends recently for ugly wallpaper suggestions that I could use for a painting I was working on. My friends are awesome and helped so much! The 1970’s avocado, orange and yellow combination was mentioned. So were weird rooster and chicken patterns and prickly cactus patterns. One friend talked about her pet peeve of framed pictures hanging askew. Here’s me working on the painting and…

Today I went to my favorite off-leash park for some dogling. I like this dog park because although it's open to the forest trails and park beyond, it's still kind of enclosed into a big bowl shape with benches around the perimeter. It basically funnels the dogs right to you if you sit down, so there is a higher rate of doggo interactions than other parks.
Some dogs from today:
- A large white great pyranees who was the first to trot over to me. She presented me with her big fluffy butt, which I gladly scratched.
- A brown pitbull with a sparkly rhinestone collar who decided I was who she was going to hang out with when the other dogs played a little too rough. She was so sweet.
- Finn, a big white goldendoodle who for some reason made a beeline for me as soon as he arrived. He leaned his whole body against me for a long time and let me give him lots of hugs.
- Hazel and Arthur: Smol and tol pibble duo. Arthur was incredibly outgoing with a big ol' blockhead which he shoved into my lap, whereas Hazel was a pocket pittie who greeted me with very gentle little sniffs.
- Dug (short for Duglas): Long-low chihuahua mix who had the vibe of a long-suffering middle manager. Trotted around after the larger and younger dogs letting them know how he felt about their shenanigans.
- Sandwich the black lab: Was too busy playing for me to say hi, but c'mon, Sandwich?

Portland state university and PCC sylvania have hella brutalist architecture ! And love joy fountain is one of the places the jackass guys did “urban kayaking”. The South Park blocks that the campus surrounds have a farmers market on the weekends.
The Saturday market on the waterfront on Naito Parkway is super mid. Really underwhelming.
There’s a stripclub called the Acropolis off 99e and Tacoma that has really good steaks. There’s a lot of strikes among Portland strippers tho and idk where they land.
There’s a lesbian bar called the sports bra?
Baby ketten klub has karaoke. There’s private rooms but also just one big karaoke bar in the middle. They have this blended frozen cocktail that’s like $6 or smth.
Also rocky butte has a rlly pretty view of the mountains. There’s this weird dome-shaped concrete church down the road from it. Idk if it’s brutalist but it’s fascinating.
There’s also a viet store on 82nd and Burnside Hong Phat. There’s Shun Fat further down 82nd idk what their vibe is tho.
Third Eye is the only Black-owned bookstore in Portland. Def check it out on SE Division. Powell’s books can suck my dick and balls (derogatory)
Mt tabor is beautiful and involves a lot of walking depending on where you park. Worth it tho. My favorite view of the city ever. It’s also an inactive volcano :)
If you really like hiking you can wander around tryon creek state park. It’s next to PCC sylvania and Lewis and Clark College. There’s also forest park but forest park is So Huge. Tryon is def more manageable on a budgeted timeline.
Laurelhurst park off stark st is also really pretty!
There’s a rad food truck owned by queer sex workers at a new pod called little America that’s also off stark street
this is all v cool! appreciate the lovely writeup <3
also the sports bra is dedicated to women's sport omg this is literally laser focused to me. it's an official thorns viewing location too i might catch that away game with fans!

There is a lichen walk at Mt Tabor Park at 2:00 today. I'm wearing my lichen overalls and my lichen earrings and squealing silently in anticipation.
Will report. I hope the leader doesn't quote the often quoted made up fact about how much of the earth is covered with lichen 'cause that will cause me to despair.
Ever hopeful.
Lichen on!

Hey, Portland-area folks! Check out this awesome iNaturalist BioBlitz happening at Mt. Tabor April 29!
"Join The Nature Conservancy, Friends of Mt. Tabor and Portland Parks & Recreation at Mt. Tabor Park for the 2023 City Nature Challenge! Started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz that begins at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work towards a common goal.
The Greater Portland/Vancouver Metro Area began participating in 2021 and we are glad to take part in the tradition. At our event, volunteers will be split into two groups with experts of different taxa (for example: plants, fungi, insects, etc.) and will walk the park to make observations using the iNaturalist phone app. We will provide training and in-field support for making and uploading your photo observations on iNaturalist. Please bring your phone or a camera to make observations. "

PDX Coffee Outside at Mt. Tabor Park, 29 April 2023
Olympus XA2/Kodak MAX 800, expired (unknown expiry), metered at ISO 100 I do love me some coffee outside action! And our chapter of Coffee Outside is pretty active, meeting Saturdays at 9 AM. This is much more civilized than other Coffee Outsides who meet on a weekday morn at 7 AM. (To be fair, ours did that pre-pandemic.) And Coffee Outside gives me the opportunity to socialize, something I…

Re: training:
Haven’t gotten around to calling KP to find out if I can see a physical therapist for injury prevention (I mean I’ll see someone else and pay out of pocket if I gotta but I’d prefer not to)
BUT
I am pleased to report that while walking to work for three days last week (two miles each way with a non-hiking backpack and my work clothes and lunch—which is heavier than I expected?!) made my butt and hips sore—
This week so far has been FINE. Way less soreness. Phew.
It’s a relief to know I can still get in better physical shape and it won’t take all eternity. 😮‍💨
I’ve written out the distance and elevation increase between my house and a bunch of places. Need to try Forest Park, too. Figured Fridays can be my longer walk days since my usual work schedule is Monday to Thursday. Need to stop at REI for new boots (been wearing chacos to and from work) and some trekking poles at some point. I’m gonna look like a dork going up Mt Tabor with trekking poles but I gotta get used to using them! I can get a map of Forest Park while I’m at REI probably.
Maybe I’ll walk there. 🤔
(Re: shoes: a lot of people do the Camino in trail runners these days, but I know from excruciatingly painful experience that I am in fact a person who needs ankle support. When I was a mail carrier I sprained/rolled my right ankle MULTIPLE TIMES—unless I wore a brace or hiking boots with ankle support. The boots I have my eye on are meant to be like trail runners but with some ankle support.)

Days 2-3 of Portland vacation
In which we eat yummy things and hike and see exciting birds!
On Day 2, Friend needed a day to recover her spoons, so Wife and I took the bus to Mt Tabor, a smallish park not too far from where we’re staying, and did a short but pleasant walk, with some steep inclines. We enjoyed the smells of the trees--I especially love the scent of Douglas fir, but we also got to smell some elderflowers. When we were ready to head home for lunch, we checked the transit app and saw that we had about 15 minutes before the next bus, so Wife sat and faffed around on her phone while I spent a few minutes birdwatching. I got a good look at a Northern Flicker, and also saw a smallish brown bird that may have been a fledgling calling for food, but I didn’t see the parent and couldn’t identify it. (I wasn’t close enough for Merlin’s sound app to identify it either.)
We took the bus home and ate. Wife wanted to go swimming in the afternoon [though in the end that didn’t work out], so I took the bus into town to visit Powell’s City of Books. I enjoyed browsing around but in the end only bought one book: a pretty Word Cloud Classics edition of Persuasion. I don’t entirely agree with the selection of quotes they included in the embossed cover design (how did they leave out “You pierce my soul” and “I am half agony, half hope”?!), but I still couldn’t resist it.
Then Wife and I met for dinner at a Latin American fusion restaurant/bar called Mestizo and drank cocktails with a delicious meal, including fried banana-flower tacos in tortillas made from 3 different colors of corn (white, yellow, and blue).
In the evening, we watched Fire Island. That was enjoyable, and I thought they did a really good job of adapting the story of P&P to the new setting.
Today, Friend picked us up around 11:20 or so and we went to buy doughnuts--first, to Mikiko for gluten-free mochi doughnuts, and then we tried to go to Coco but they had sold out of the raised doughnuts (and I don’t like cake doughnuts), so we went to Doe Doughnuts instead. I ate a sort of doughnut sandwich--a traditional (though actually vegan) “raised” doughnut sliced in half, with whipped cream and sliced peaches inside. It was exquisite. Though I’ve just realised that I have no idea what the whipped “cream” was made out of, since that was a vegan doughnut shop!
Then we drove out of the city to the Columbia river gorge, where we took a 2.5-hour, 6-mile hike on the Historic Highway Trail in eastern Hood River County. It’s a paved path, so we saw some cyclists, but it wasn’t too busy. It was a spectacularly beautiful day. We ate our lunch before starting, and then hiked along the trail above the river. There were beautiful views, both on the drive there and once we were hiking, plus nice trees (including more Douglas firs), interesting rock formations, and some excellent birds! The first bird I spotted was a black-headed grosbeak, which is new to my life list. There were lots of robins and juncos, but we also saw 2 ospreys circling. And I heard a bird that Merlin sound app identified as an orange-crowned warbler. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to locate it visually, but the song was a long trill, descending at the end. @lies, should I report it? And finally, near the end of the hike I spotted a raptor at the top of a tree above a nest. I looked in the binoculars and discovered it was a bald eagle! and another one was soaring around the nest too, and then we saw another just as we were getting back to the parking lot. That was exciting (new to my eBird life list and possibly my life list at all), and even Wife (with her lack of patience for birdwatching) was thrilled to have seen them. I’m not sure if I should report the nest as it’s not 100% clear if it was in use. The other thing is, this was not primarily a birdwatching walk. Should I report the list as “Incidental”?
We rested for a little while at the shady picnic table where we’d parked and ate another doughnut (mine was a salted vanilla glazed raised doughnut. It was tasty, but I don’t understand the current vogue for salting one’s sweet treats.). refilled our bottles, and then drove back home by way of the grocery store.
From the freeway, I spotted a raptor sitting in a nest at the top of a tree, but of course I couldn’t identify it as we drove past. I also couldn’t tell if it was a parent incubating eggs or a nestling waiting to be fed.

60s Greenway Fall Construction
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) plans to break ground this Fall on a new 60s Greenway exiting Mt. Tabor Park and leading south until SE Harney Street. The new route, which prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists, will feature traffic calming elements and enhanced intersection improvements at five crossings. Neighborhood greenways offer a low-stress path for people traveling outside…

How to Have 2 Perfect Days in Portland
So you’ve decided on a quick visit to Portland, Oregon and you wanna make the most of your time, get a full Portland experience, and come back with a pocket full of memories and a gallery full of pictures to look back on. Let me assist you in this exciting venture. I lived in Portland for 2 years (No I'm not an official local but I do think I've got enough intel to advise you on 2 days in the city. Don’t be a hater.) and when I would plan visits before I moved, I was always overwhelmed by the myriad recommendations on sites like Trip Advisor (I still linked their list of activities down below. You’re welcome.)
Anyway, here’s how I would spend 2 days in Portland if I were planning a trip…
When to visit: This is extremely important especially if you consider yourself especially partial to the sun or gloom. Personally, I believe summertime is THE MOST amazing and beautiful time to visit. The whole city is in great spirits, nature is in full bloom, and no activities are off limits due to rain or snow. That being said I recommend planning your trip between late June and early August.
Hotel vs. Airbnb + where to stay: I definitely recommend staying in one of the many airbnb’s listed in Portland. Airbnb is huge in the area and many homeowners have created beautiful stays as it is part of their monthly income. I will include a photo on what part of the city I recommend staying in below. I have had great stays in tiny homes, guest houses, and even in shared spaces! I would recommend however, avoiding basement apartments.
Day 1: Let’s get into the actual activities. I would recommend flying in early, around the time that you can check in to your stay. Contact your host and see how early they are able to take you; the earlier the better.
Day 1 Activities:
Coffee and breakfast at Petite Province Boulangerie and Patisserie
Walk off breakfast at Mt. Tabor park
If you’re into shopping, explore the many shops on Hawthorne Blvd.
Go back to the airbnb to reset, change if necessary, and get ready for lunch
Enjoy many different cuisines in one meal for lunch by visiting one of Portland’s many food truck lots (My favorite food trucks are Demarco’s Sandwhiches, and Jojo’s). Alternatively, great traditional lunch spots I would recommend are Devil’s Dill, and Pizzacato.
Head to Forest Park and hit as many of the activities up there that you can before attractions close. Attractions I highly recommend are The Japanese Friendship Garden, The arboretum, The Lan Su Chinese Garden, and The Pittock Mansion.
Now it’s time to eat again because you’re gonna be hungry after all that activity! Dinner spots I would recommend to end the first day with an bang include Farmhouse Kitchen Thai Cuisine and AFURI Ramen.
Day 2 Activities: You’ll want to rent a car for today
Start with coffee from Kind Coffee Cart and breakfast from Pine State Biscuits or City State Diner and Bakery
In your rental car, make your way to Multnomah Falls OR The Trail of 10 Falls (The second is a 10 mile walk but it’s worth every step). If you’re gonna go to the second stop, bring lots of water and snacks!
On your way back into the city, stop by The Columbia River George Scenic Area if you have time (if you’re like me, I would also recommend Collin’s beach… it’s a nude beach.)
Once you get back into town, pick a dinner spot whether that’s a food truck or traditional brick and mortar (I’ll leave this one up to you).
If you’ve got time left in the evening and still have some energy I recommend hitting up Quarterworld for some late night arcade and bar vibes. (Most games require more than one quarter. I’m letting you know so you’re not disappointed like I was.)
That’s it! I plan on revisiting this blog once I learn formatting and integrated links on tumblr to provide more recommendations, photos, and videos of my visit. All in all, Portland is an amazing place and I hope you enjoy your stay!
P.S. Besides the incredible nature and food scene, Portland is also known for having the highest amount of strip clubs per square mile. Just throwing that out there as I have visited my fair share and have always had a ball. That’s just me.
With Care,
Mr. Homebodii
