Nicki Minaj's Much Anticipated Pink Friday 2 Opens Up To A Mixed Reaction:
Nicki Minaj finally releases Pink Friday 2 five years after her last album. The album was preceded by a string of singles and teasers. Some of the teasers were said to not be on the album, but ended up on the record. Nicki wasn’t very straightforward with what we could expect on the record and it seems like she was purposely trying to keep her fans on their tiptoes. The album also ended up being delayed which caused quite the reaction, however she assured the Barbz that it was because she wanted to give them something worthwhile.
The album has now been out for a couple of days and it has received quite the mixture of reviews and reactions. Some people love the record, some found it had standout moments and then moments that were lacklustre and then those that didn’t like it at all. Going as far as calling it her worst release so far. She pushed the record as her best yet and one of the greatest records ever, which in turn ended up setting expectations sky high. Doing that is never a good idea, however Nicki seems to have had and still does have a lot of belief in the body of work. She’s been teasing four additional tracks that she’ll be adding to the album and that is something to look forward to.
After listening to the album it is a mix of highs and lows, there are some really strong moments that you are drawn to immediately, there are some that grow on you and others that you are left disappointed by. It isn’t really a focused record and seems a little all over the place, she should have shortened the tracklist having quality be the priority over quantity. That way she would have curated a body of work that makes more of an impact. The album doesn’t really feel like a follow up to her debut, which is what many thought it would be due to its title. However Nicki showcases versatility for sure as she pulls at the heartstrings with the real and vulnerable moments, then there are tracks that highlight her talent when it comes to songwriting and clever references. There is no doubt that Nicki Minaj is one of the greats and she definitely has cemented her name in music history.
There has always been high hopes that she has it in her to create an album that works in its entirety, but every time she’s been given the opportunity she has failed to make the most of it. Every record seems to be a mixture of ups and downs, lacking focus. With her debut coming the closest to being a well rounded and stellar effort. Nicki has the prowess to create something of that caliber, but it seems at times though the idea is there its execution falls flat.
Pink Friday 2 also seems to have caused a hate train from the Hive for some odd reason. They’ve been going in on attacking the record and its commercial performance so far. Which is so fitting for the Hive as they go out of their way to hate on every and any female artist they can. It is all in a desperate attempt to hold Beyoncé firmly on the pedestal they’ve placed her on. To act as though no one can touch her and then be this worked up over another artist and their release, is very contradictory. It is still unclear as to what triggered the Hive to start swarming on this release.
Unfortunately the predictions for the opening figures of the album are disappointing as you’d expect a higher figure. Though you can see why that could be and that is the performance of the preceding singles. ‘Super Freaky Girl’ may have started atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, however it fell off and was forgotten just as quick. Nicki ended up too caught up on chart success and so did her fans that they failed to generate a hit that had longevity and one that made an impression strong enough to excite others for the project it was accompanying. ‘Red Ruby Da Sleeze’ was definitely a step up and deserved better, however it ended up lacking the effort to push it. Nicki didn’t officially announce it as a single and neither did she make it clear whether it was a standalone release or linked to the upcoming album.
Then she released ‘Last Time I Saw You’ and it was promoted as the second single, she even performed it at the MTV Video Music Awards. The song was moderately received, as usual the premises was there but the execution was lacking. It was a rather emotional song due to it being about the loss of her father so you could feel how personal it was to her, however it just didn’t make much of a connection with a wider audience because it had something missing. It debuted in the top thirty on the Billboard Hot 100 and then soon after departed. So there wasn’t much to create enough buzz for the album. Not only were the general public loosing interest, it seems her fans were too. As she’s had quite the supportive fan base and them alone could have pulled in a bigger figure than what is currently predicted (170k - 190k first week).
The album isn’t terrible, but it is underwhelming. However Nicki doesn’t deserve the hate she’s been receiving lately. It showcases how quickly people seem to switch up on a female artist in particular, which is sad. She will always be one of the greats who’s done so much for rap music and has then in turn opened doors for all the other female rap artists that have popped up since. She still has so much to give and this record is just a stepping stone. Nicki needs to detach from the pursuit of commercial success and focus on creating a body of work that stems only from the passion she has for music. That will then result in something that will make a much grander impact.

(Slight spoilers(?) For Chao 2 below)
Me who chose a bad parental relationship:
Tumblr media
Not to mention the family episode, where you fly back home and show the world who you really are.
lololol fun fact: the family episode is inspired by MTV Cribs
just imagine a very awkward MC gesturing to their childhood bedroom like "this is where I sleep. that's where I got dressed..."
seven would just be putting a hand up to the camera crew: "pls don't touch that""pls don't touch that""yeah don't touch that either""don't touch that""what did I just say don't touch that"
Orion is lucky that he doesn't need to share his home, mostly because he's so anal about everything that the idea of people coming inside his house would make him break out in hives. (he has a "leave shoes at the door" household)
G and Vic have shown their home so many times that it's nothing new to them lsjhshajas
August would be the only one to actually realize the oddness of the situation and ask: "isn't this an invasion of privacy..."

Alright, tumblr hive mind, recommend me some podcasts...
I'm going on vacation in March and I need some podcast recommendations. But I'm looking for rather specific things:
Non-fiction
Serialized and completed (e.g. a 5 part series about xy)
No more than... I dunno... 12-15ish episodes
NO BUMMERS! aka: No true crime and no "exploring a cult" kinda stuff (bumms me out...)
It doesn't have to be all fun and games, but if it's a serious topic, it shouldn't make me wanna drown myself in the ocean
I'm gonna give you a few examples of similar shows than what I'm looking for:
Waiting for Impact: former MTV VJ Dave Holmes investigates what happened to a band that has intrigued him since the early 90ies (but never had an official song)
1 Way to Make an Emoji: Alex Schmidt takes us on a tour through the process of adding the official Bison emoji to the catalogue, and why it is so important to him
Sold a Story: the incredible story about a "new" - and dubious - way of teaching children how to read - and the terrible consequences (this is about as "bummer" as I want to go, anything more serious than that and I'm out...)
So that's kinda what I'm looking for: not too long, non-fiction, and finished!
Thanks for all suggestions!

Yesterday I was up watching TV until 5 AM (I know) and I ran out of things to watch so I just had MTV on in the background because it was Nineties Nation and to my surprise, Catherine Wheel came on. I sometimes catch I Want to Touch You on their Thursday Rock Block feature but this one was a shock to me. They do have a fairly wide range of videos, but you have to accept you’ll be watching a lot of the same artists again and again and savvier viewers might watch out for certain blocks and write out the exact sequence of videos and wait for a repeat of the same “episode” (in case you ever wanted to know if these were actual episodes or if they were just developed by a Vevo like algorithm). Sometimes if you’re lucky, you might even get non lead singles by relatively small named bands in the Nineties block. My biggest gripe would have to be their 120 Minutes block. They only show it Monday morning 12 AM to 2 AM (AKA Sunday night if you’re like me) which technically, no, it’s not late for me and I could watch all of it and go to bed directly at 2:01 AM and it would be “early” for me. but I only watch it as a treat if I have Monday off. Each 120 Minutes block I am vaguely disappointed at realizing it’s the same group of Radiohead, REM, Beck, Talking Heads, 80′s New Order and maybe Blur. Sometimes they throw in someone left field that surprises me, like Curve, The Sundays, or Aphex Twin, so I always keep it on just in case if I see someone new. But seeing Catherine Wheel on an even broader block was a definite surprise. They don’t get 120 Minutes play (or fellow shoegazers Lush, who I once saw have For Love on a women’s day playlist in March 2018, or My Bloody Valentine, who had a free on demand video on one of the Music Choice/Hive Music/etc options back in the day). If I still had a VHS that I knew how to use, I would just set up an auto recording and fast forward through it each Monday but that sounds like too much (I feel like in the forum era of the Internet we could crowdsource an index of songs that play on which MTV Classic block). I found an archive for an actual 120 Minutes episodes with some summaries for episodes. Although I never watched it, I can feel the nagging responsibility of unfinished homework, the weird hours of Sunday retail, the resentment and then the guilt of not being able to control your family’s Sunday plans and the unspoken dread I would get watching Sunday animation blocks knowing that Monday was one tossing-and-turning-in-bed away just through glancing these. It’s interesting seeing how often some videos would remain in rotation, what the musical hosts would play, or seeing people who I know get completely snubbed from the show (Adore by Smashing Pumpkins was completely snubbed from 120 Minutes at a quick glance). I’m confused because the show that they had after Kurt Cobain’s death didn’t play any Nirvana.
I feel like I don’t pay enough attention to Catherine Wheel. I have Ferment on CD but I still don’t know that much about them. I didn’t even know they were British! According to their Wiki, they vaguely parallel The Smashing Pumpkins with their debut album being different from their other albums, their second albums being heavier (ironically I would call Siamese Dream Smashing Pumpkins’ shoegaze album), their third album having their heaviest rock/metal moments, their fourth album being a new sound album, before taking a pause with their 5th album released in 2000.
Shoegaze is one of those genres where I almost have to compartmentalize it away in a box away because it feels like too big of a genre to just listen to. It takes me back to when I first started to fixate on it on a bad stretch of uninspiring job applications, awkward dating apps, and being at home in the summer when everyone is going away.

I hardly believe television exists in 41st millenium, but what are the prymarchs favorite TV shows? i particurly think Magnus would love CSI and Vulkan would voracioously consume verly sweet soap operas.
Yes yes yes SILLY ASK MOUHAHAHA!!!
I think it wildly vary from planet to planet. Don't they have Holo drama? Didn't Konrad had televisions in everyone's home so they could watch his live flailing???
So, as such!
The primarch and their favorite tv show, 30k pre-heresy style!
Roboute: He watch the very peaceful show about a bunch of guy farming and having Farm Drama somewhere deep in a random segmentum. There's no war and no conflict, but he's DEEPLY invested in knowing who stole Farmer's June prised champion Grox.
Rogal: There is this absolutly factually acurate and very dry tv show that visit the mega structure of the imperium. He watch while nodding approvingly, and occasionally send a message to the local builder about structural flaw he caught on tv.
Corvus: on Kiavahr, there is this weird TV show for kids that is basically a strange 30k rip off of Bill Nye the Science Guy. She love it because it has a weird side character named Mr. Crow Crow, who is a normal human in a shitty foam space marine costume helping to explain how the science help the astartes. It has become a meme in her legions, for when any astarte does something silly.
Leman: actually really like music, and enjoy this surprisingly chill and hyspter show about exploring the sound of the imperium. It's surprisingly deep and relaxing.
Lion: Law And Order: Hives of Terra, running for the 178 season. It is still the exact same structure as our current law and order. Somehow, the "DUN DUN" sound effect survived the age of strife.
Vulkan: oh Nocturne produce the most WHOLESOME love drama between (gasp!) A space marine and a human!! They are on season 13 and they JUST held hands for the first time like, 5 episode ago. In 40k, this show is consider heresy and hunted down by the inquisitions.
Jaghatai: LOVE nature documentary!! And they must be so cool in 30k!!! Giant floating squid around gaz planets, scaly chameleon tigers, carnivorous horses... He does take note of wich planets seem extra cool to visit later.
Ferrus: He REALLY like his weird campy shows. Somehow, some horror franchise have survived to 30k, and he enjoy the 16th Remake of Scream Queen where Ash, Freddy and Michael Myers all show up for a monster brawl. It's extra nonsense.
Sanguinius: "Hi everyone here is Sergent Thunder Megadeath today we are going to KILL. SOME. ORRRRRRKS!!". Watch a horribly MTV style propaganda show where xenos explode like grapes. Eat ice cream directly from the box and is in his pj pants while doing so.
Horus: there is this very mean talk show where the invited people are high ranking member of Terra, and they get into borderline set up debate and more often than not, are humiliated.
Fulgrim: he love creative reality tv, think project runway, inkmaster, Glow up.... He just put it in the background when he's busy tho. The one he does look at more closely is an EC space marine going from chapter to chapter to lovingly engrave space marine armors. He's such a proud dad.
Konrad: actually LOVE children cartoon. The bad guy is punished, the nice people are perfect, everything is good and nothing hurt. He's hunting for the legendary lost media show "My little pony: Frienship is Magic".
Magnus: pretend that he's above such low entertainment as TV, but will gladly watch Perturabo shitty reality tv show. Loose his shit laughing over Ancient Aliens.
Perturabo: He found a vault of og TLC shitty reality tv and hes NOT going back. He has invited Magnus over just so that they could marathon 90 days fiance and scream at the TV. His fav is toddler and tiara tho, Forrix has walked in on him screaming "SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH" at random tv moms multiple time now.
Angron: Galactic equivalent of slow mo guy and those machine press chanel on youtube. It's a big legion party, and they cheers every time something explode.
Lorgar: to everyone surprise... His fav is a baking show. Kinda like the great british bake-off. It's calm and non-stressful and make him forget about all the bad things in the galaxy or his responsability.
Mortarion: very found of Mechanicus romance themed show. They are weirdly charming, and include a tons of cute things like the used of "emoji" and "gifs". Very good humour, once you get over the binary chuckles.
Alpharius Omegon: Animes. Don't ask HOW, but they somehow saved the animes industry. Like their stupid battle shonen.

MTV Hive, January 13, 2012
Tumblr media
Lana Del Rey’s a torch singer for the internet era, splicing found footage for her early videos and nudging pop culture references in pastoral come-hither melodies. So it’s no surprise that she’s been both a smash hit and a lightning rod on the web—the former for her billowing voice, the latter because of her seemingly out-of-nowhere rise to stardom (and allegedly collagen-injected lips). Del Rey is the subject of much vitriol on blogs and websites, and rarely does that vitriol have anything to do with her actual music.
Part of what seems to rankle her detractors is that she peels the mystery from pop process: she is the anti-Gaga, transparent about her transformation from normie to performer. Her costumes in videos and photo shoots include elaborate floral crowns and gauzy gowns, but candids show a very pretty -- but average -- woman who looks very comfortable in distressed skinny jeans and ballet flats, quite like, well, a student at Fordham (her alma mater). She’s not trying to go to the grocery store in McQueen. Most remarkable about Del Rey’s seemingly surefire rise to stardom is that her narrative is largely un-spectacular: a classic smalltown girl from Lake Placid, whose formative exposure to the pop cultural keys and codes that turn people “cool” was limited, but whose smarts and savvy -- and yes, perhaps calculation, but so what? -- propelled her to this point. So when her next album, Born to Die, drops on January 31, with honey-dipped vocals and searing narratives, it will be fascinating to see whether Del Rey gets a Taylor Swift pass and is accepted as America’s moonstruck version of an everygirl.
Interviewing her at MTV’s studios this week, she seemed more like a chill study partner than a woman whose US television debut will be SNL (this Saturday, January 14, on NBC, after which she’ll hit Letterman February 2 and Ellen later that month). Her mild accent is naturally breathy -- without trying, her twang’s a bit like a mafia moll or, more specifically, a forlorn Jackie Kennedy. But that’s the closest she got to the myths in her meme. Online, there are many blog posts devoted to the lack of photographs in which she is smiling, and people seem to expect her to be pouty and haughty based on her model-looking press pics. In person, though, she comes off as sweet and well-spoken, and doesn’t hesitate to crack a smile (or, oh my god, laugh). There’s a dreamer aspect to her demeanor, but it’s tempered by how thoughtfully she seems to choose her words. Hive spoke with her about true love, rap music, metaphysics (as one does) and social activism.
How did you start getting into music?
When I was really little, I liked to sing, just with my mom. I would sing in school, I sang in church, because that’s just what we did. I sang in high school, in choir, a little a cappella group. I didn’t think I’d be a real singer, but I did like to do it. But then I got to New York when I was 18, and I decided that it would be really nice for me if I could be a singer. So I moved to Brooklyn with my boyfriend, and just started singing and playing there.
Did your parents have music around?
They didn’t have too much music around, but they actually both had really nice voices. My dad wrote country songs for fun, and my mom sang for fun. My dad liked the Beach Boys, my mom liked Carly Simon, but we didn’t really listen to them; we just put the radio on -- whatever would be on the radio. Growing up, I didn’t really listen to that much music. My friends and I listened to rap -- to like Eminem or like, god, whatever was going on then -- dance music, electronic stuff. Other than that, we were not that enlightened about all things “cool,” musically. We got there eventually!
When did you start writing songs?
I didn’t write anything that I loved until I was 18, so it was later. When I was younger, I always loved to write -- that was one thing I really liked to do.
"When you lead a different lifestyle from a lot of other people — like you don’t do drugs, you don’t drink, you try and stay above the dark side of things -- it’s just, that was maybe a position I was trying to embody just to stay calm."
I would write fiction on my own time, and I liked writing in school. I thought that was one of the less offensive school subjects, so that was fun for me. I transitioned to singing when I picked up the guitar. I’ve never been good at the guitar -- always been bad -- but it did help me write for the first four years.
I wondered if you wrote -- your lyrics are so narrative.
They sound like stories. I’ve been in New York now seven years, and it’s been a really long road, so the parts of my life that I draw from lyrically are maybe the more dramatic segments of the time that I’ve been here. But they are all true.
Do you feel like you struggled when you moved to New York?
Yeah, it was difficult, as it is for everyone. Maybe myself a little bit more, but that was my own fault.
Some of your lyrics, particularly in “Born to Die,” are incredibly sad. Are you a sad person?
I’m not sad, I’m happy. I feel like I’m happy because I’m at peace with the way that things are. It was difficult for me when I was, I don’t know … for a long time I was lodged in my head, wondering how things were gonna turn out, if things were going to be hard forever. And on a philosophical level, I was consumed with the idea that … what happens? Why are we here, What happens to us after we die? I did have a darker filter on sometimes, but that slowly lifted through doing a lot of different things. And finding true love is something that really did inspire me, lyrically. Because I felt so much the same for so much of my life and then when you find someone exciting, you don’t know that you could actually feel differently than you did before. I was inspired.
Is that how you knew that you found true love?
Well, I know now that it’s different for everyone. For some people, true love is complete serenity and feeling at peace and at home and having a life with someone else. For me, it was true love just because my own version of true love was feeling electric and excited. It really just depends on what you feel like you need, but for me, I had never really felt excited about things before.
You’d never felt excited about things before?
Not that I remember.
Just in love, or everything?
Just like, life. I mean you go to school every day and it’s hard … I lived in a small town and I just thought it was gonna be a long life.
Did you think you’d stay there your whole life?
I did for awhile, but I left when I was 14. I mean, I could have gone back -- well, I did go back. I was a waitress in town because I didn’t go to school right away, but then I decided to go to college in the Bronx.
Waitressing!
Yeah! I loved it! Everyone always told me I was a great waitress.
You get a lot of stories that way, too. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, write, I like to dance. I’ve been really involved in my community for the last seven years that I’ve been here, in lots of different ways. I’ve been involved in homeless outreach for the last seven years. Drug and alcohol awareness -- I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs anymore. When things aren’t going that well musically, you know … I stopped focusing on music for a long time so I started focusing on other things that I knew more about.
Volunteerism?
Some volunteering. I have a group of friends who work individually with different affiliations, but basically, yes. It’s been good. I consider being able to pursue music a luxury, but it’s not the most important thing in my life. It’s just something that’s really nice that ended up working for me for right now.
Where are you involved?
Just in New York, just in the last seven years. When I realized that maybe singing wasn’t going to be so easy I went back to what I knew how to do, what I was also really passionate about. There’s not many things, but …
What about your videos?
Yeah, for “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans,” I edited. I only work on YouTube cause that’s the only medium I know, but I knew what I was looking for -- the clips I wanted to splice into them. And for “Born to Die,” I wrote a treatment for it called “The Lonely Queen,” so that I would be in a setting that represented Heaven, sort of in like a remote castle in Romania. [Laughs] Walking through the halls flanked by tigers. And then she’d be flashing back to happier times in the arms of her love. And then Yoann Lemoine adapted that treatment and made it more doable. But I love that video. I really do. I can’t believe it turned out so beautifully. I spent a lot of time thinking about where I wanted it to go.
Also the whole concept of a lonely queen. Is that a narrative that ...
Something I relate to? Yeah. I mean, I do feel alone in the things that I do sometimes ... sometimes I feel that I’m walking my own path. I’m not anymore actually, but I think that I did. When you lead a different lifestyle from a lot of other people -- like you don’t do drugs, you don’t drink, you try and stay above the dark side of things -- it’s just, that was maybe a position I was trying to embody just to stay calm. But I’m always thinking back to the way that things were, especially in terms of a particular relationship that was tumultuous. And Brad, the guy in the video, he’s in the video because he kinda reminds me of that guy. So yeah, it was really perfect, because everything came together.
What do you like to read?
I really like to read biographies, just like I like to watch documentaries; I like to figure out how people did what they did, why they ended up where they were. Mainly I like singer’s biographies. And two years ago, my favorite was Elizabeth Taylor’s biography, which was by her biggest fan who’s also written a lot of books on her, like all her romances. Also, Anthony Scaduto’s book on Bob Dylan was really good. And you know, I studied metaphysics in college so I’m always kind of reading on the side for fun.
What does metaphysics entail?
It’s not as complicated as it sounds. There’s different branches so it depends on which branch you’re studying. If you’re studying something like cosmogony, you’re studying about the origins of the universe, and how reality came to be reality. Like this space that we’re sitting in now -- how did we come to inhabit this place? And why this reality strikes us as it is. I studied that up in the Bronx.
Do you still live there?
I just moved back in with my friend in Brooklyn actually, because I’m never really here now and I wanted to be with a friend again.
So have you been practicing all week for SNL?
Well, no, I haven’t because I’ve been working. I don’t even know what I’m singing! I know it’s “Video Games” and I think “Blue Jeans,” but I thought it was supposed to be “Born to Die,” so I have to go figure that out. I better fucking figure that out! [Laughs] There’s a lot going on so there’s a lot of catching up to do.
Are you excited?
Yeah ... I’m excited if it goes well. If it doesn’t, I’m gonna kill myself! But yeah, what an honor. And who knows why, but it’s really nice for me.
What do you hope for your record?
You know, I say this and I really, really mean it: Everything I hoped for, I got it. It is just beautiful. My main hopes for the record were just in terms of what it sounded like and who worked on it. And now I have this crew who I’ll just work with forever. It’s amazing. This kid Justin Parker, and my producer Emile Hayne, the Philadelphia Orchestra ... my main hopes were just that it sounded gorgeous, and it does. And the rest? You know, whether it’s received well or not, I did a good job. So I’m not too worried about it. Because you can’t say it’s bad, because it’s just beautiful -- it’s just strings and beats.
Do you hope to tour the world?
No, what I’d honestly like to do is just stay here in New York. I’ve been here for seven years and I just love it here. I’ve been to almost every country and really, for me, nothing compares to New York. I’m just obsessed -- I’m in love. Every day in New York is a good day. I mean, here’s my ambitions: my big plan is to get residency back down in the West Village. When everything is said and done, I’ll do my tour, I’m gonna do my live television, but what I’d like to do is have residency in the West Village and do my other work that’s important to me on the side. And that would be a better life than most because I’d be doing what I wanted.
That’s on some Bob Dylan shit.
Bob wanted to tour the world! He was like … he really fucking wanted that. He started in the West Village, but he had visions of extreme stardom. He complains about it now, but he really wanted it! Do you live in the city?
I live in Brooklyn, close-ish to you. I was at Glasslands last night.
What did you see?
Some friends who are rappers!
Oh, do you know this band called Flatbush Zombies?
OH MY GOD, YO!
SHUT! UP! JUST SHUT UP! [Laughs] So me and my friend had this marathon the other night and he showed me that, I was just like … It’s just really weird -- Flatbush Zombies, A$AP Rocky, Azealia Banks, it’s something glossy, some of it’s weed rap but it’s all do-it-yourself videos. It’s really great! The whole time I lived in Brooklyn, I never felt like there was really a scene emerging, but now there is.
Brooklyn and Harlem rap right now is so ill. It’s a real New York scene forming.
Yes, that’s what it is! When I was here, MGMT was blowing up, but after that it was like, nothing. But that’s what’s happening right now.

Hello. I am a new symbrock shipper and i really appreciate your posts of the excerpts from the comics. But i was wondering which part of the comic people said the writer (the cates one) erased some kind of part about the eddie & venom? It gets me curious somehow and was wondering if you knew about this.
...I’ve actually been expecting someone to ask me about this, sooner or later. Kinda been dreading it, tbh XD But here goes.
(This is quite a long and serious answer, and I totally get if not everyone wanna read this, but as more and more people are becoming interested in the Venom comics, I do think this is an important thing to address.)
This is also a conversation about fandom.
*deep breath*
First of all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and just like some people might be upset with the writers of a tv-show when things take a turn they don't agree with, some people are upset with the changes Donny Cates did when he took over the Venom comics after Mike Costa. Yes.
But here’s the thing:
The Venom comics have had many writers (and artists) over the years. I mean, jesus christ, the Venom symbiote’s very first appearance was back in 1988. That’s over 30 fucking years ago, people. At this point, I don’t think it’s realistic to expect the feel of the story to be the same under every single writer that comes on. I just don’t.
In 1996 Len Kaminski gave us Eddie and his symbiote holding hands and giving each other chocolate gifts with love hearts and the line “it’s not human, but it’s given me things no girlfriend ever could” in The Hunger. Then, 20 years later, in 2017-2018, we had Mike Costa give us Eddie calling the symbiote ‘my love’ and ‘dear’ and ‘darling’ and refer to their partnership as a relationship and finally made them have a baby together in First Host.
(I strongly recommend using my masterlist of comics excerpts as a timeline here to understand what the hell I’m talking about.)
Sure, Cates hasn’t had Eddie calling the symbiote ‘my love’ or ‘darling’ since he took over. I guess you could say he “removed” that. Do I miss that part? Yeah. Of course. But as far as I know, no one had Eddie and the symbiote hold hands again in the 20 years following The Hunger, either. Different writers have told different stories, chose to focus on different things.
Cates chose to go down a very angsty route. To, for example, bring back the topic of the Venom symbiote having a past with Flash Thompson, of sometimes wanting to be with him more than Eddie, and feeling torn about who to choose, and Eddie’s pain and jealousy over that. This is something Mike Costa barely touched on during his run. Costa wanted domestic bliss, so that’s what he did. But that doesn’t remove past canon. Not for him, or anyone else.
I’ve said this before - have basically warned people who’ve come to me saying they wanna start reading the comics because of my excerpts - but the comics are fucking angsty. There’s a reason I’ve made a point of posting Symbrock highlights from the comics, rather than just say “read the comics, they’re just never-ending domestic Symbrock bliss” because they’re not.
Eddie Brock is not a happy man, and his relationship with the Venom symbiote has been obsessive, possessive and unhealthy at times. They have grown a lot and come a long way over the years, but this has always been a part of their canon. Eddie’s fear of being alone, of being the symbiote’s second choice.
This side of them is part of why I, personally, find their relationship so intriguing. How they can’t stay away from each other, even though they're both so flawed and not always good “people”, and don’t really know how to keep their relationship healthy.
And I think Cates must have felt the same way, because he’s chose to dive into Eddie as his own person. He’s made Eddie face his demons, his past, deal with his fear of being alone and do a lot of growing in ways I haven’t seen him do in any previous comics. He wanted to tell the story of Eddie Brock, to perhaps let him become a better person than he was, in order to make the relationship between him and the Venom symbiote better. And in my personal opinion, he’s doing a great job of that.
I’m very much against the “fandom hive mind” thing, and the thought of new people entering the Venom/Symbrock fandom and simply adopting the “we hate Donny Cates, he ruined the comics” mentality because they see so many other shippers feel that way, is so upsetting to me. I don’t like how entitled fans can become at times.
(I don’t know how many people who still follow me from my Teen Wolf days, but, damn, I’m embarrassed about a lot of stuff that went down between that fandom and the show runners/actors. It was a silly teenage show on MTV, and yet so many adults (myself included) thought they should have a say in where the story went, and not. It took me a long time to realize that, but there it is.)
Donny Cates did NOT deserve the hate he got from so many Symbrock shippers back in 2018. He’s NOT unfaithful to the story of Venom as a whole, and has NOT ignored previous canon. He openly spoke to and supported the Symbrock shippers on Twitter, before they tore him to pieces for not being Mike Costa. For, in their opinion, completely ignoring the loving nature of their relationship.
But like?
Cates is the one who gave us the Venom symbiote’s first “I love you, Eddie”. Cates is the one who gave us Eddie getting phantom limb syndrome from being apart from the symbiote. Cates is the only one, in my opinion, who’s given us SO many beautifully heartbreaking inner dialogues from Eddie like that about love and loss and longing, all referring to the Venom symbiote. Cates is the one who gave us the exchange “You found me” / “Always” that I’m still crying about.
My point being: I don’t think it’s fair at all to say that Cates has ignored the intimate relationship between Eddie and the symbiote. Because he hasn’t.
And it wouldn’t surprise me if, one day, when the Venom comics get a writer who actually doesn’t treat Eddie and the symbiote like romantic partners, people will look back on previous runs and say “wow I miss what Cates did.”
But,
I’m not here to convince anyone that Cates’ run is better than, or even as good as, Costa’s. I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to love every Venom comic that’s come out in the past 30 years written by several different writers. That’s unrealistic. You’re allowed to have a favorite Venom writer. You’re allowed to think that where Mike Costa’s comics ended, Eddie and the Venom symbiote’s story ended, for you. You’re also allowed to, like me, enjoy the angsty and slow burn story currently being told by Donny Cates.
You don’t have to hate Cates just because you’re a Symbrock shipper.
That’s all I wanted to say, more or less.

Ed, Edd n Eddy Series Bible (1996) -Analysis-
You can all finally read/download Ed, Edd n Eddy's official Series Bible right here! Thanks again to Chuckletons for sharing this with me and to Joey/Kongiscool0518 for sharing it in the first place, the Holy Grail of lost Ed, Edd n Eddy trivia!
One of the first posts I made for this blog was the Series Bible page. It was a composite of every source we had ever seen reference the series bible so far-- storyboarders in interviews, CN's old character guides, and the biggest source, an old CN UK posting about the show. Well, I figure now that we have the official source, I better update the old page (so everyone knows it's out of date), and make this new Series Bible post using the official source! Not much new information, but I was intrigued to finally learn the true phrasings of some things we had only heard paraphrased, as well as at least one detail from the movie that I couldn't believe came up this early in conception...
Unfortunately, Tumblr has apparently updated its post system to only let me add 10 images? Gonna try and only use images for what I need since you can read the actual document above, I guess I'll transcribe it too for easier reference and so we don't ever lose some archive of this.
Quickly, let's review what a series bible is:
A series bible is how creators pitch shows to networks. They can be called “pitch bibles” as well. Bibles do not usually get posted publicly, because they are initially under a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement by the network; also the creator may simply not wish to share it because it reflects the earliest stages of development.
The pitch materials typically include early concepts for characters, locations and episodes. Sometimes it exposes secrets, in this case, Ed and Eddy’s home lives, and sometimes the stuff in it is completely abandoned because it’s so early in production, in this case, casual references to school and adults.
Alright, everybody, it's time to gather 'round and read the Ed, Edd n Eddy Bible!
THE YEAR IS 1996.
YOUR NAME IS LINDA SIMENSKY. YOU WORK AT CARTOON NETWORK. A FRIEND OF YOURS, DANNY ANTONUCCI, IS WRAPPING UP A SHOW ON MTV. YOU GET THIS FAX.
Tumblr media
Linda Simensky immediately fell in love with this concept because as a child, she was best friends with 2 other Lindas for seemingly no reason other than the shared name.
I love how Danny decided last second to pencil in the correct names over each Ed, since they're arranged out of title-order.
"They're friends because they have the same name."
-the Logline for the series.
Fun fact: one storyboard artist for the movie observed that the movie is essentially all about challenging the series' original notion that the Eds are friends ONLY because of their name.
"A Danny Antonucci Cartuna"
-the label Danny used to use under announcements of new productions.
PAGE 1:
Ed, Edd n Eddy
They're best friends because they have the same name.
A gag laden, beat generated CARTOON bumper car ride of 3 misfit youths on a cul-de-sac in the suburbs of America.
Through summer vacation, part-time jobs, or just hang'n out at the corner mail box, they want to belong....but CAN'T.
From home chores, helping neighbors or eating jaw breakers, they want to fit in...but CAN'T.
Ed is into "B" monster movies, model kits and is quick to break out into rashes.
Lots of luck...
Edd is into chemistry, biology and prone to crushes.
Later...
Eddy is into pranks, is stylish and flaunts himself to the world.
Ya Right...
Ed, Edd n Eddy is a show about confusion and contradiction, that awkward part of youth, pimples, big feet, oily hair and... girls???.
Puberty is unforgiving.
I was fascinated by the lack of art on this page, it makes the pitch feel very focused. AKA logo in the corner, the title logo again up top, then the logline appears again below.
I really love the breakdown of Danny's vision of the show. "Gag-laden, beat-generated, CARTOON bumper ride." Very accurate, and I think "beat-generated" is the phrase that interests me the most. I typically think of "animation beats" as sort of a give-in-- technically all things fit a rhythm, so all stories are essentially just a montage of beats. But this does make me realize how important the strength of the beats and their rhythm are to the pacing of a cartoon and making you feel like "that was a good one." I feel like the "seasonal rot" viewers feel over the course of a show, and the way that perception differs from person to person, depends on the type of beats you want. Even though I am very into the experimental beats of a show in its later seasons, I can definitely see how season 1's beats are more typically appealing to a wide-audience, and how important a focus on that is to the longevity of a show.
I found it really interesting how the scams are initially conceived of here as "summer jobs." It adds to the sense that adults were originally meant to be present. Honestly a little surprised nobody with access to this bible had ever thought to mention that-- scams are not referenced ANYWHERE. Their image in the Series Bible is that they have summer jobs and help neighbors, which is certainly a much cleaner reputation than the Eds ended up with in the show. Makes me realize though, were some of the early scams, like Ed's Hive Bee Gone and their newspaper routes, supposed to be leaning into this early idea of them with almost legit jobs for unseen adults?
I was very amused by the repeated phrase that the Eds simply CAN'T fit in.
Loved to finally see the official phrasing for the confirmation that Peach Creek is in America. Not much different than I was led to believe, but still nice to have the true quote.
Also love Eddy being described as "stylish and flaunting himself to the world." The bold-print reactions to each micro-description is a cute idea too, I truly wonder who we were meant to picture saying those things in reaction. Each Ed? Kevin?
The "corner mail box" is an oddly specific phrase-- the Eds do hang around mailboxes throughout the series, especially seasons 1-3, and I believe the canon map does have a corner mailbox, but the idea that the Eds hang out at one specific mailbox went the way of Bro's supposed secret treehouses.
PAGE 2:
Ed, Edd n Eddy
Show Description
Gag laden. True cartoon style, inventive, non parody, fast paced, stretch and squash
Beat driven. (even when characters stop they hold with a bounce cycle. Adults never bounce. Music can play important part, not just fill.) But not a musical.
Cartoon surrealism. (viewers see the show as Ed, Edd n Eddy would, less important things tend to blend into the background, while objects of Ed, Edd n Eddy's desires are focused. Premise driven.)
The school year's over, (yeah!!!!) and the long HOT summer vacation begins (gulp). What to do?
Stuck on a cul-de-sac in the suburbs of America is the last place you want to spend summer break, especially when you find life confusing and contradicting.
Ed, Edd n Eddy is about friendship, and serves to remind us that they're no "good ole days," just smelly runners.
You can tackle anything, when your with your pals.
Their days are spent, for knowledge, acceptance and some cash for jaw breakers. Armed with pimples, big feet and oily hair the three amigos trek into the unknown.
Ed, Edd n Eddy are dying to be grown-ups, but they're kids, and attack adulthood as only kids would. Simple situations turn into a manic rollercoaster ride. (Don't forget your barf bag).
They just want to belong, and they're willing to pull off any insane stunt to prove it. First they need to figure out what it is they want to belong to.
Found it interesting that on this page, the show's logo is replaced with the title written in a jumbled font. Seems like the font from the show's end credits.
Hehe, the continued reactions to the descriptions. Allow me to be Double D for a moment and point out the increased use of parentheticals on this page, as well as one wrong "your".
I love Danny's insight that season 1 is framed by the context of how hyped everyone still is just to be out of school, but also the sense of pressure to make use of their break.
I really appreciate Danny getting further into the details of his summary of the show's style on the previous page. It only makes sense that he had this much of a vision that early.
A second confirmation of the cul-de-sac being in America! I'm also really into the repeated focus on the Eds finding the world "contradicting." I always loved how EEnE's inexplicable cartoon antics supported that sense that the Eds are highly aware of contradictions in both societal things and the actual characters.
Tumblr media
WOW, so I'm fascinated by this dual reveal. Before the wiggling outlines, which Danny usually calls a "boiling line" and describes as a tribute to wiggling inking in early animation, the series bible instead refers to him wanting the characters to do the iconic Fleischer "bounce," which is a much more commonly recognized rubberhose animation technique. Very interesting that Danny decided not to stick to that. Did it feel too out of place? Or was the overseas team not willing to animate a weight-shifting for every single held pose? Haha, guess I can see why boiling was an easier compromise. I wonder if he had any other ideas for how to make it more of a 1930s cartoon.
The other reveal to me here is that the movie's choice, that adults don't always wiggle in the show, was an idea from the very beginning! I guess I can better understand now why it's just too difficult to communicate a stylistic choice like that overseas-- no point making Bro not wiggle, that'd just create confusion.
Also, really disappointed that my wish for a musical is officially squashed in the series bible itself. That's a tragedy. The show's over, ya couldn't let me dream, Danny!? Conversely, I love Danny's forethought to say "non parody," I definitely noticed and appreciated EEnE's avoidance of derivative parody humor.
Tumblr media
My spouse had to point out to me that Danny probably means sneakers here, lol. Canadianisms!
The comments about the Eds wanting to grow up but needing to figure out what they want to belong to are so great and relate to the movie so well. I've heard those comments before, but the correct phrasing was cool to see.
PAGE 3:
Ed, Edd n Eddy (image of Ed in right corner)
Character Description
Ed
Attention deficiency syndrome.
He has trouble...
He can't....um...
OK, he draws all day in class.
When Eddy gets a bright idea...Ed's in.
Ed is easily talked into doing Eddy's "hard work". He has great physical strength.
Ed's happiest with his Model kits and B-monster movies. He draws his knowledge from his movies.
Ed smells. Flies are attracted to him.
Ed has sayings for all situations
ED: "you can change your shirt, and Bingo was his name..."
Ed's perpetually a slave to his younger sister's whims and whines.
Ed may have to baby-sit his sister, or let her watch whatever she wants on TV, or let her dress him up in mom's clothes.
Ed breaks out in Rashes. He's allergic to practically everything, especially Guinea Pigs.
Ed's Mom xerox's his sketches and doodles for her therapist.
Ed's Dad hopes to pass on to his son, his knowledge on "pre-owned" auto sales.
Very cute bit wasting the space at the top of the page. Danny seems very invested in Ed's personality already. The old sources we used to have definitely tried to condense these down to simpler blurbs.
Weird how Danny wants to essentially diagnose Ed with ADHD here (phrasing it very poorly, but it was the 90s and... Canada?). I don't know enough on the subject to debate it, but I still gotta point out Ed's canonical cracked skull!
Interested in the comment about Ed being most allergic to Guinea Pigs. I don't think that animal was ever even mentioned in the show. Eddy mentioned an old gerbil once....
Neat to finally have the real phrasing of the official word on Ed's parents! I saw someone comment earlier that this seems to be hinting Ed's Dad is selling stolen cars. I've never thought to question the legality of his apparent second-hand-car dealership (I imagined he works with Eddy's dad, who has received a legitimate award for his salesmanship), but those quotation marks are certainly making Mr. Ed's practices questionable! Best case scenario, Danny meant that more like italics or something, but maybe Ed's dad IS up to no good...
PAGES 4 & 5 (Ed's turn sheet and expression sheet)
PAGE 6:
Ed, Edd n Eddy (image of Edd in right corner)
Character Description
Edd
is really smart.
is really quiet.
Edd is unnaturally-- polite.
Edd hasn't been allowed to take gym ever since the Dodge ball incident. He's been excused to free study time in the library.
Edd doesn't like it when people touch his things.
EDD: "You may enter in my room, but don't touch my Lego robot. Thank you."
Edd's learning to play Peddle steel guitar. (his Mom makes him)
Edd's prone to "crushes". Girls in School, in his neighborhood, TV, anatomy books. He mails "true loves" his socks.
Edd is always ready for action, even though he can calculate the implications.
Edd constantly mumbles.
No one ever sees Edd's parents. They both work nights. They communicate to their son solely through Post-it notes. Edd's not allowed to touch anything in the house while they're gone. Anything.
Interesting how Danny slightly differentiates the barely-used space at the top here from Ed's description, to characterize Edd as more quiet and mumbly, adding an awkward "--" mid-sentence, perhaps to create the impression that Edd halts to choose words carefully.
Everything on this page feels familiar, from the character guides and other old sources. The most interesting thing to me here is that Edd's Mom forcing him to practice Pedal Steel Guitar is established this early, don't think I knew that, but I had noticed that it existed in his room from ep 1.
I love how the explanation in the beginning for why Edd goes along with their dumb schemes even though he's smart is basically just "he's always ready for action." ?!? I guess in a way???
That weirdly phrased Edd quote amuses me because it references Lego, just like the original concept background for his room before somebody nixed the copyright-namedrop.
Tumblr media
Edd's prone to crushes thing has been reaffirmed over and over in character bios even though it really doesn't come up outside of the cupid magic in HPH and the pilot-episode heart eyes at Sarah that are barely canon. Still, I've always loved the truly disturbing statement that he mails "his true loves his socks" and how that managed to make it into canon with a comic book example, a cel animation example and a digital era example.
Tumblr media
PAGES 7 & 8 (Edd's turn sheet and expression sheet)
PAGE 9:
Ed, Edd n Eddy (image of Eddy in right corner)
Character Description
Eddy
Exhibitionist.
Megalomaniac. (quote from his report card)
Eddy is the unofficial leader of the trio.
He's always got a plan, a stunt or a weird noise.
Eddy's the "class clown". He loves showing off. He loves being the centre of attention-- no matter how stupid the reason is.
Eddy is the only kid in his grade to have been expelled for aw hole week from school. It was his turn to set up the video for science class. He switched "Our Friend Yeast", for a video he "borrowed" from his parent's room.
Before Eddy's brother went....away, he enlightened Eddy with the "legends" of the neighbourhood. Eddy knows where all the abandoned tree houses are, which sewer pipers are safe to spelunk, and the secret recipe for the "El Mongo Stink Bomb" (it's been in the family for years).
He is the one who is most able to pretend that he knows it all... and doesn't care what anyone else thinks about him.
His genes are working the fastest.
Eddy's Dad is constantly concerned that Eddy may grow up to be a ...figure skater.
Eddy's Mom never believes his little darling was involved in such a heinous act.
Funny choice that Eddy's wasted-top-space is just two one-word descriptions, and allegedly lazily swiped from his negative report card.
Wow, we knew the report card quote and the "Our Friend Yeast" story from the UK show guide, but now we also know Ed's page says that Ed draws in class, and now I realize that Ed and Eddy have series bible school blurbs to match Edd's classic dodgeball incident blurb. Anyway, it's great that Eddy's showed his entire school some sort of sex video his parents have.
Very interested that the phrasing for the Bro/El Mongo Stink Bomb blurb even seems to suggest it's a family recipe. Eddy's Dad did have prankster stuff in his closet in JJJ... did Bro learn his prankster ways from Dad?? The neighborhood's secret tree houses have come up in other descriptions (at best, I'd say this could be related to that creepy shack the Eds found in the woods), but I think it's new info that Eddy personally learned the sewer routes from Bro. Interesting...
Thankfully, I had already heard about the Bible's awkward reference to Eddy being the most pubescent as "his genes are working the fastest," lmao.
Once again the Double D in me comes out to point out that the description of Eddy's Mom seems to switch to the Dad's pronouns.
PAGES 10 & 11 (Eddy's turn sheet and expression sheet)
PAGES 12-14 (Sarah, Jimmy, Rolf, Jonny, Nazz, and Kevin lineup of all 6, then 2 zoomed in lineups of the first 3 kids and last 3 kids)
(Funfact: the kids' designs were allegedly freelanced to an outside studio, hence why their refined later-season designs are so different from these lizardy starting places, lmao)
PAGE 15: (images of Sarah and Jimmy next to their blurbs)
SARAH
Ed's baby Sister.
It's her way or the Highway.
She has everything done for her, if NOT she'll "make" them do it.
She can be quick to judge.
Whinney.
A tatrum for every occasion.
More than a handful for Ed...or Edd and Eddy.
Thinks Edd is kinda cute.
Wants Eddy to MOVE...to another planet.
JIMMY
Sarah's best friend
He is always playing with girls, boys are just too tough.
He is accident prone, when ever we see him he has a different affliction, ie: band-aids, patches, casts, lumps...etc.
He is very clean.
The Ed's frighten him, "They're such brutes".
I'm surprised how much of the UK guide was accurate to what was really in the bible for them! Also surprised Danny misspelled "whiney" and "tantrum," one right after the other. Is this how Sarah spells them? ...Sorry, Danny, I yam what I yam.
PAGE 16: (images of Rolf and Jonny next to their blurbs)
ROLF
First generation of a landed immigrant family.
Nationality not important.
He's proud of his heritage.
He has peculiar traditions and/or customs.
He eats "weird" things.
He has hair on his back..... "yuck".
He confuses the Ed's to no end.
He confuses the other kids to no end.
JONNY 2x4
He is a wanderer and very inquisitive
From early morning to supper time, he is always outside playing, with his buddy, "Plank".
"Plank" is a wooden board that Jonny drew a face on with a crayon.
Jonny has wonderful conversations with Plank. ...Plank is a piece of wood.
Jonny makes himself very "accessible" to the Ed's.
Found it interesting that Rolf's bio is less clearly phrased than the UK bio set it up to be-- there they made it sound more like he mixes up who the Eds/kids are, here it's unclear whether it means that or (more likely) just means the obvious statement that everyone finds him confusing. If it's that, what a lame hollow bio Rolf got. This kid's based on you Danny, show some of that personal side!
Always loved Jonny's description, his life sounds so cute. Playing outside literally all day. Interesting to have it confirmed that Jonny drew Plank's face, I preferred to think the Eds drew him and sold him to Jonny, but whatever.
"Accessible" has always been an important vague description of Jonny to me. It really only applies to how chummy they could be with him in season 1, but it still sorta applies to his personality throughout the series as well.
PAGE 17: (images of Nazz and Kevin next to their blurbs)
NAZZ
She's cool, calm and assertive.
She is the most matured of the kids, or so she thinks.
She's into make-up and fashion magazines and Boys.
Sarah thinks she's awesome, wants to be just like her when she grows up.
When she enters a scene, all activity stops... boys freeze, they sweat, their hearts beat faster and faster. They lose their ability to talk. When she leaves, they recover and conclude it was something They ate.
She thinks the Ed's are funny.
KEVIN
He is cynical and sarcastic.
He thinks he knows the "routine". That's because he watches "60 Minutes".
It got a big laugh out of me that Kevin's description is only 2 sentences long. Nazz even has a more detailed character description from inception than Kevin. Love this for them.
Who's the Eds' rival? Well, he's cynical, sarcastic and he watches 60 Minutes, doesn't that tell you enough!?
I love the "mature... or so she thinks" remark about Nazz, a grounded flaw for her to have, being a little overcommitted to being mature like Eddy. It also perhaps suggests naiveté that makes it a little more reasonable that they didn't notice they were dumbing her down at the end of the series, but I do think the movie version of her better reflects the Bible's concept.
PAGE 18:
The Other Neighborhood Kids
Lineup of May, Lee and Marie.
The Kanker Sisters
These gals are tough. They bother, bully, provoke and bewilder everyone.
They live in a motor home park on the other side of the Cul-de-sac. The other kids have never been there.
They are proud of their Tammy Faye Baker memorabilia.
Their project "Cooking with Ketchup" closed down their school for a whole week.
No one likes them, especially the Eds.
They are determined to marry the Eds. They want them to do their dishes.
Amused that the Kankers are essentially being labeled backgrounds characters here, the role they mostly fell into in season 5. "Other" neighborhood kids...
I love that the Kankers have a school blurb to match each of the Eds', and that theirs has similar destructive-intentions to Eddy's video premiere story.
I believe all of this was all known from the UK guide as well, but still, neat stuff!
PAGES 19 & 20 (zoomed in Kanker lineup and their height chart with the Eds)
PAGES 21 & 22 (early promo art that used to be on CN's old Eds webpage, the art of the Eds eating jawbreakers at the end of ep 1 with the overhead text "Ed, Edd n Eddy love JAWBREAKERS!!!", and the art of the Eds all running with overhead text "Ed, Edd n Eddy see something shiny...."Jiggers." That weird "jiggers" statement at the end was normally edited out and I don't know what it means. Looked it up and it seems to be Chinook jargon (like when Ed said he was "skookum at X's and O's") usually said in the same sense as "CHEESE IT!")
PAGES 23+:
The rest of the pages in that bible download are from a 2004 storyboard test. The storyboard sample "It's Raining Eds," which we've seen some submitted samples of before, interpretations with Ed attempting to fly or chew gum and Edd making radioactive gum, I was surprised to find out the outline is just the original outline for the opening sequence to season 3's 'For Your Eds Only', seemingly Jonny was not written into the original outline (or was excised for easier testing purposes) but Kevin's brief cameo was. Now I wonder if they knew this would be used for a test when they wrote it, and if they would've come up with a less random way to include him if weren't forced to be a concise bit for testing's sake. (Your limit is typically 40 storyboard pages in my experience.)
I also noticed that in the included background references, the anonymous adult neighbor house next door to Ed's is officially just referred to as a "generic house."

My analysis ends here, but be sure to download that sometime and enjoy all the raw storyboard sketches at the end of the document!

Jordana LeSesne, formerly known as 1.8.7, is an American musician and producer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[1] She now produces and performs as Jordana. She became known in the mid-1990s as a drum and bass producer.[2] Vibe magazine called her "one of the most respected Drum ‘n' Bass producers in the US."[3] In 2015, she was named as one of "20 women who shaped the history of dance music" by Mixmag.[4] She is transgender and came out in 1998.[5][2]
She has released over 50 tracks, including four albums, several EPs, and remixes under the alias 1.8.7. The 1997 album When Worlds Collide became known for its "dark pummeling assaults". She has licensed tracks for compilations as well as the Sci Fi Channel. Three of her albums charted in the Top 25 of both the CMJ (College Music Journal) and Mixmag U.S. (later Mixer Magazine, now defunct) for 1997 as well as 1998[6] and 1999. Her third album "The Cities Collection" debuted in the CMJ Top 5 climbed to the #2 position on CMJ Music Monthly's dance chart for June 2000.[7][8][9]
Her works have been reviewed by Billboard,[10] Spin, Rolling Stone, Urb, Mixer, Mixmag, Raygun,[3] as well as Knowledge – the U.K. Drum and Bass magazine. In 1999, she was listed in Raygun's Who's Who of International DJs. She was one of the headlining DJs on Knowledge Magazine's 28 city Kung Fu Knowledge tour in 1999.[11] She also made Out Magazine's OUT100 list for the year 2000.[12]

Impact on music[edit]
Her work has influenced other artists such as well-known dubstep producer Bassnectar, who heavily sampled 5 A.M. Rinse (feat. MC Sphinx), the last song on her first album When Worlds Collide for his song Here We Go of his 2010 EP and single Timestretch.[13] Since the sexual allegations of Bassnectar have become known to her, Jordana has publicly condemned his actions as well as called out the fact that he never delivered contractually promised royalties for the above mentioned work.[14] Additionally, electronic rock act Celldweller sampled "Wake Up" off of her first album as well as "San Francisco" off of her third album "The Cities Collection" in their 2013 song "Uncrowned".[15]
In 1999, Drum & Bass/Hip Hop producer and label owner Hive approached Jordana to remix her song Defcon-1 also off of When Worlds Collide. Hive's remix appears on his 2001 album The Raw Uncut.[16] Jordana collaborated with Lady Sovereign on a song early in Sov's career after the two met through an internet chat room for StrikeFM.co.uk, an online radio station which Jordana had a show, and the now defunct UKGarageWorldwide.com forums. The two would later team up when Jordana under her Lady J alias, had Lady Sovereign MC for her radio show on Flex FM London.[17]
History[edit]
She first came to the attention of the music industry when she was asked to remix Blondie's "Atomic." Her remix appeared along with Armand Van Helden and Diddy’s remixes on the single.[3] A little over a year following that release, Mac McFarlane, the promoter of the well established and legendary New York City club, Konkrete Jungle, contacted her to create a themed song for a CD compilation/mix-CD. Jordana created the song "Konkrete Jungle" for that purpose. Described by CMJ as containing "menacing hardstep attacks",[18] it was released on the Ultra Records compilation, Konkrete Jungle - Maximum Drum & Bass, mixed by BBC Radio 1 Drum'n'Bass show host Jumpin Jack Frost. Following extensive touring throughout North America and abroad as a music producer, Liquid Sky Music, an indie label distributed by Caroline Distribution signed her to a three-album contract in late 1996.
Hate crime in Ohio[edit]
On the night of February 22, 2000 in Kent, Ohio, Jordana was attacked and brutally beaten in a transphobic hate crime by a group of men including Matthew Gostlin.[19] Gostlin and other assailants vaulted her in the parking lot outside of the Robin Hood nightclub where she had just performed on the Cities Collection tour. The attack took place while she was escorted from the event with the event promoter to his car. The group of men attacked suddenly and Jordana lost consciousness almost immediately after being struck in the face. She suffered nerve damage to the lower part of her face from her lower lip down as a result. She was quoted, saying in the May 2000 issue of CMJ New Music Monthly that in the seconds just prior to the attack: "I saw his face. I remember the look on his face. It was this look of utter hate, like 'I'm going to kill you.'"[20] In an interview with the Village Voice, George Meesig, a man from Cleveland, Ohio who defended her during the attack, stated that Gostlin had misgendered her, saying “this is personal”.[21] Other reports noted by the Village Voice on the message board for Breakbeat Science (a Drum'n'Bass record store) mentioned transphobic slurs being shouted during the attack. She subsequently cancelled the tour to recover.[19] Gostlin, while charged, was never arrested nor spent any time in court. Her family was told by the Portage County (Ohio) prosecutor's office that attempts had been made to serve the warrant but Gostlin's whereabouts were unknown. She felt that justice would not be served so she left the United States for England due to concerns about personal safety and well-being.
Additional work in music industry[edit]
In addition to music production, Jordana is a DJ, musician and singer. From 2001 to 2002, she worked at Flex FM in London, England as Lady J, with Lady Sovereign performing for her during her radio show.[22] In 2002, she held a club residency performing UK garage, 2-step garage and house music at the club Trinity in Vauxhall neighborhood.
After returning to the United States, Jordana returned to rock and fronted a goth metal band in Seattle. Prior to that, she was asked to play bass in another band briefly where she met and became close friends with singer/songwriter Shelita Burke. She has toured the world and played many DJ sets. She has been billed alongside Arca for Planet Zolean: Un/Tuck + Hot Mass on the Currents.FM Common Multiverse Initiative.[23] She was featured on the Dekmantel Podcast.[24] She was featured as Mix of the Day for Resident Advisor.[25]
In 2014, Jordana scored the documentary Free CeCe, produced and directed by Jacqueline Gares and Laverne Cox. The documentary details the struggles of CeCe McDonald, an African-American transwoman wrongfully incarcerated for murder for defending herself against a hate attack on her outside a Minneapolis bar.[26][27]
Literary mentions[edit]
She has been featured in several books. Her success in rising from living in a "rust belt" city to being an MTV-featured electronic music artist was mentioned in "The Rise of the Creative Class" by economist Richard Florida. She appears in two books detailing American electronic dance music scene history: Michaelangelo Matos's The Underground is Massive,[28] and Rave Culture, an Insider's Overview by Jimi Fritz and Virginia Smallfry.[29]
An interview with Jordana was featured in multiple books, including a book published in 2012 by rock journalist George Petros.[30] She has spoken on her personal life in interviews for publications such as The Festival Voice,[31] The Brooklyn Rail[32] and href zine.[33]
Personal life[edit]
She currently lives in Seattle, Washington.

Debut Album of The Strokes' Is This It and Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights.
TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS
Tumblr media
New York City was in transition in 2002, the devastation of 9/11 still lingered but a new sense of goodwill and compassion flowed through the city with dozens of bands reanimating a faded glory that had come to define the Giuliani era. Arriving after several well-regarded EPS that honed Interpol's Sonic and sartorial sense, it's possible no album captured this moment as vividly as their debut turn on the bright lights. Interpol took shape at NYU in the late 1990s where the band formed partially as a result of mutual fashion appreciation. Frontman Paul banks had come across bassist Carlos dangler in their dorm wearing skin tight black clothing and a giant crucifix. Meanwhile guitarist daniel kessler had already gotten to know Dengler in a world war 1 class after approaching him with a compliment about his shoes, and the trio eventually found replacement drummer Sam Fogerino while he was working in a used clothing store. Soon after coming together, the group started to jam at Funkadelic studios, PDA was already in embryonic form by then. After hustling in the NYC circuit and recording here and there, a chance meeting with Emma Pollock of the Delgado's led to the release of an Interpol EP in 2000 on the esteemed chemical underground label. On the heels of the EP success and in the midst of the post strokes gold rush in New York City, Interpol scored a deal with Matador Records then home to bands like Belen Sebastian, yo a tango, and pavement. Chris Lombardi of Matador claimed that he was most impressed by the business-like manner with which the band conducted themselves the suits first and foremost. Interpol decided to record turn on the bright lights at producer Peter Quedas's home studio in Bridgeport Connecticut to avoid all of the temptations New York City had to offer a hot young band while Cadis has gone on to produce the national, Frightened Rabbit, and Yan C, his most recent credit prior to turn on the bright lights was engineering the get up kids on a wire. Sessions were contentious Carlos D had wanted more keyboards, more nights on the town, and the title of the record to be celebrated baselines of the future. If banks had his way, PDA wouldn't have even made the record. However Quedas protested and told him that's their hit single, which it was. Quedas was not enthused with the new, until the final mix which had him in tears. But for all the seriousness and grandeur of turn on the bright lights moments of humor abounded. The spoken intro of Stella was a diver and she was always down; was recorded while banks was ad-libbing with ice in his mouth “this one called Stella was a diver she's always down”. Anchored by Carlos D and Fogerino’s hulking rhythm section, Banks created it in New York City recognizable to its citizens but in cryptic indelible lyrics. “The subway was a porno”, “relationships were a bracelet” and “they had 200 couches for you to sleep” when it all felt like too much. Beginning with a crowd stoking instrumental that would foreshadow runs opening for U2 and the Cure, turn on the bright lights resulted in music of unusually sweeping and grandiose gestures that felt foreign to rock music in general at the time but especially to indie rock. It's hard to imagine the transition towards the post-punk bombast of Arcade Fire, The Killers, and the National without Interpol opening the lane first. While local papers would occasionally snark at them as fashion victims and post-punk dilettante, critical acclaim for turn on the bright lights was overwhelmingly positive. The brilliance of turn on the bright lights is all the more apparent 19 years later a beacon that continues to shine radiantly during its city's darkest moments. IS THIS IT

Fueled by hype that was extraordinary even by the standards of the British press, The Strokes became instant superstars in the UK long before their fellow Americans heard “is this it” thirty-six stylish lo-Fi down-and-dirty minutes of unwholesome Downton Blues that evoke The Velvet Underground, The Ramones, television, and countless others who will firm New York City as the epicenter of punk rock cool, the strokes debut was already in stores in the UK for months before its eventual American release mere weeks after the September 11th attacks. Is this it subsequently took on an unintended resonance and became a sentimental document of a New York City that would no longer exist after Rudolph Giuliani, gentrification, and the war on terror. The Strokes may not have saved rock and roll themselves but The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, the killers, and the Arctic Monkeys likely wouldn't exist without “is this it”. while several members of The Strokes have been playing together since high school in a project called “just pipe” the band truly took shape after guitarist Albert Hammond jr. joined the group he and singer Julian Casablancas attended the same Swiss boarding school and reconnected after Hammond returned to New York City and serendipitously moved across the street from Elite Model Management which just so happened to be owned by Casablancas’ father. Contrary to the stereotype of The Strokes as a prefab overnight success, the group struggled throughout the late 90s playing to empty rooms before their demo got the attention of Rough Trade ANR man Jeff Travis, nor were they predator naturally cool from the start. before The Strokes first gig Hammond claims the band was so nervous they watched the Eddie Murphy movie Bowfinger to calm themselves. Preliminary sessions for is this it were recorded with Gil Norton best known for his work with the Pixies but also Foo Fighters “ultra slick the color in the shape” for the album itself The Strokes would reunite with Gordon Raphael who previously produced the modern age EP. The unorthodox production of “is this it” was the result of Raphael using a minimal number of microphones and following Casablancas says requests to have it sound like your favorite blue jeans not totally destroyed but worn in comfortable. According to Raphael an A&R guy named Steve obelisk II held is this it most unprofessional sounding music that he has never heard. The strokes declined the invitation from MTV to play alongside the vines in the hives at the 2002 Video Music Awards. The band didn't want to be lumped in to quote the new rock revolution it consisted of mostly bands with the word the and a plural noun in their names. Casablancas told MTV I'm not going to do a band off with them and strokes manager Ryan gentle said “that was pretty much the last time we were played on MTV”. The infamous bare-bottom on the international release of is this it is that of photographer Colin lanes girlfriend, however concerns about whether conservative chain stores like Target and Walmart would carry the record but The Strokes to switch to the American cover shot of a subatomic particle in a bubble chamber Casablancas is rumored to have liked it even more than the original. A more crucial alteration from the international version involves the removal of its own, New York City cops all involved agreed that a chorus of New York City cops they ain't that smart would be considered in poor taste after 9/11 even if the song was written years previous by removing the song from the US release of is this it there's not a single song in a Strokes album that has mentioned New York City by name. Well The Strokes achieved a level of popularity rivaled by few American bands in the 21st century is this it was considered a commercial disappointment in its time it peaked only at number 33 on Billboard while lead single last night topped out at number five of the modern rock chart with some day stalling at Number 17. Long story short, these two albums (and arguably two of the best rock albums of all time) had left a dent in my
life for it defined my teenage years when I had nothing, lost, and frustrated with my life. It reminded me the melancholic time that I had in the past. So I'll leave you guys with a lyrics from each album and try to find the song that corresponds to it :). "I have 7 faces, and I know which one to wear" "Soma is what they would take when hard times opened their eyes and saw pain in a new way"

Robot Chicken #16: “Atta Toy” | May 23, 2005 – 12:00AM | S01E13
Let me tell ya, brothers: I’m covered in hives my hands got all swollen. I have no idea why. My hands are less swollen now and they only hurt a little bit. But I’m in a pretty bad mood. So let’s just power through this fucking trash and get to Space Ghost, shall we?
Sketch one: “I guess the idea is a TRL girl is just like that?” that’s in quotations, because it’s literally what I wrote in my notes. It describes the sketch pretty well. Listen, because I guess TRL doesn’t exist anymore so therefore there’s probably people who have no idea what this is actually making fun of. TRL stood for Total R-slur Live or something like that, and it was MTV’s countdown show where they played videos retarded I mean requested by MTV’s viewers. The more requests a video got, the higher it traveled in the rankings. MTV’s studios overlooked Times Square in New York City, the salsa capital of the world, and teens would hang out under the window and scream, while some famous MTV personality like Jesse Camp or Alex Winter would shove microphones in teens faces so that they could shout “I AM CASEY FROM NEW BRUNSWICK AND I LOVE THE THONG SONG WOOO” in a little picture-in-picture window that appeared over the video. So this show whose whole purpose to show “most requested” music videos would routinely interrupt them with teen-aged nobodies hooting at you. Also it was very common for them to only show about half the video. Show was borderline unwatchable. Anyway, this is what that’s making fun of. What if the girls in there were just like that. Like they go home and they can’t stop screaming. That’s the joke
Then there’s an Access Hollywood thing where Pat O’Brien voices himself. It’s bad. There are like three or four little sub-sketches in here. I wrote down one where religious deities are in the Amazing Race or something? Or they’re just like there to help out contestants. Then there’s a thing where Fox fires Matt Groening, famous for doing tangible work on The Simpsons and not just cashing checks for licensing agreements, is fired from his own show so that they can turn it into right wing propaganda. This bit is focused on Apu being deported and tortured by Lindy West or whatever that Guantanamo Bay pointing woman’s name was. This is in stark contrast to where I’m certain right wingers would be on the side of the culture war desperately fighting for Apu’s right to exist and continue being voiced by a white. MAN.
I’m not exactly powering through this at all. I’m writing way too much like usual. Let’s move on.
There’s a sketch about a bird teaching their child bird to shit on people, and teaching it how to chose it’s target carefully for maximum effectiveness. I guess this is the “good” sketch of the night? I still didn’t like it that much, but I give it points.
There’s running gags that I guess I should mention, one involves poking plot holes into King Kong and another shows a robot humping a dryer as it runs.
The last thing is that it’s The Smurfs “but there’s a freaking MURDER”, again putting my original notes in quotations. I wrote this before it dawned on me that it was a Seven parody. I guess there are some somewhat clever jokes in here. Most notable to me was how much Gargamel looked like shit in this. I remember them doing other Smurf sketches and they and they had a much more cartoon-accurate Gargamel. Here it’s just a guy.
Well, I watched it. What do you fucking want from me.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast: “President's Day Nightmare” | February 20, 1995 | Special
Hey! It’s the disowned episode of Space Ghost! This was a 30 minute special that was originally simulcast on TNT, TBS, and the Cartoon Network. It was a big promo for Cartoon Network’s What a Cartoon! series, which a lot of Cartoon Network originals spun off from. The show usually had three cartoon shorts by different creators, and the ones that did well (however one would define that) would turn into regular series. This special includes pre-series clips of Johnny Bravo, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Powerpuff Girls. This show features interviews of the creators of said shorts, as well as two other dudes with cartoons that didn’t nearly fare so well. Did they go on to do bigger and better things? Who knows? I decided to cut to the chase and just google their names with the phrase “sexual assault”, and nothing came up, so that’s good.
One thing I should have mentioned for the Christmas episode, instead of obsessing over the possibility of an incorrect air date: I believe that was the debut of full-retard Brak. He’s in this one too. I guess that’s significant. I fucked up!
I really like this episode, and always felt at odds with the creators’ non-enjoyment of it. I guess they were resentful of the fact that they were forced to do a cross-promotional stunty special like this. But it’s not a bad episode by any means. Towards the middle, though, I could kinda sense that the writing felt a little rushed; for the first time Space Ghost is actually beholden to guests with a promotional interest. They couldn’t just defiantly cut around Adam West holding up the jacket to his book. They couldn’t go fully creative. And they had to show clips and a full cartoon at the end of it, to boot. I guess I can see how that would be annoying! But the front part of the episode has plenty of bits that I remember fondly, with quotes that I can recall as though this were any classic episode of Space Ghost. So my hats off to the writers because this episode turned out good.
This episode exists in several versions. First there’s the original premiere version, which includes an announcement from Don Kennedy that the show is also being simulcast on the other Turner networks. Don would go on to voice Tansit, who is in this episode with a different voice and personality. Then there’s the most common version, probably, which is like the premiere edition but with the simulcast line cut out. I THINK Adult Swim once aired the original version as part of the Space Ghost Bootleggers Marathon. This seems to be the version on HBO Plus.
Then there’s a “director’s cut” version released as an extra on the Volume 3 DVD. It excises the cartoon clips and the Powerpuff Girls short and includes some extra footage with Dian Parkinson. This is actually a pretty good watch, though purists might miss the cartoons. I’ve always sorta wanted to cut together a composite version that has absolutely everything included.
The last version is included on one of the Powerpuff Girls DVDs, and from what I remember it’s like the broadcast version (I don’t remember if the simulcast line is in there or not), but I think it’s missing the end credits. It’s mastered in such a way that you can view the Powerpuff Girls short as a standalone short or with the Space Ghost portion tacked onto the front of it.
