Today In History
Gertrude “Ma” Rainey was born in Columbus, GA on this date April 26, 1886. Rainey was an influential blues singer and early blues recording artist.
Dubbed the “Mother of the Blues”, ‘Ma’ Rainey bridged earlier vaudeville and the authentic expression of southern blues, influencing a generation of blues singers.
‘Ma Rainey's Black Bottom’ is a 1982 play by Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson-which chronicles Ma Rainey and the 20th-century African-American experience. The play is set in a recording studio in 1920s Chicago, and deals with issues of race, art, religion, and the historic exploitation of Black recording artists by white producers.
The play has been converted into a film, “Ma Rainey's Black Bottom” directed by George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson.
The film stars Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts. It’s streaming now on Netflix.

Happy Birthday 🎁 Ma Rainey Reposted from @bbc_culture This is the real Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, who was immortalised in August Wilson’s play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and more recently, the George C Wolfe movie adaptation. She was one of the blues’ first hitmakers, who had been performing the blues for two decades before recording her first session at 37 in 1923. But, like many of the first wave of breakout blues artists, her legacy was pushed aside in favour of others. Tap the link in our bio to read the history of the black women who pioneered the blues, and why so many of them were forgotten. 📸 Getty Images. #BBCCulture #MaRainey #MaRaineysBlackBottom #blues #theblues #1920s #twenties #didyouknowthat #music history @i_lex_project https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc0uYVRg4ck/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The film adaptation of August Wilson’s play “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” truly rests on the shoulders of Academy Award winner Viola Davis and her co-star Chadwick Boseman, mostly Boseman. He is a tour-de-force actor, especially in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” He truly impressed me with his performance as Levee Green. The character is so well-rounded and certainly has an emotional past. The marketing team behind the film is really selling Davis and Boseman for the upcoming award season in early 2021. Honestly for the Oscar for Lead Actor, it could come down to Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal” and Chadwick Boseman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” If I had to choose one over the other it would be Boseman for the win. Boseman could win posthumously. He could sweep all award season. He could also be up for Supporting for “Da 5 Bloods.” Anyway, thank you August Wilson. I honestly loved this film more than my most anticipated film of December 2020, “Sound of Metal.” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” will most likely be on my top 10 films of 2020. 10/10. . #maraineysblackbottom #chadwickboseman #violadavis #augustwilson #netflix #levee #leveegreen #marainey #oscar #oscars #oscars2021 #academyawards #academyawards2021 #movie #movies #film #films #play #stageplay #chadwick #viola #actor #actors #awardseason #moviereview #filmreview #review https://www.instagram.com/p/CI-1ojNsP9I/?igshid=1bi8dv7x9sw4z

Remembering Blues legend "Ma" Rainey who was born 130 years ago today on April 26, 1886. Wikipedia: "Ma" Rainey (born Gertrude Malissa Nix Pridgett; c. April 26, 1886 – December 22, 1939) was one of the earliest known professional blues singers and one of the first generation of such singers to record. She was billed as The Mother of the Blues. She began performing as a young teenager (between the ages of 12 and 14), and performed under the name Ma Rainey after she and Will Rainey were married in 1904. They toured with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels and later formed their own group called Rainey and Rainey, Assassinators of the Blues. From the time of her first recording in 1923 to five years later, Ma Rainey made over 100 recordings, including "Bo-weevil Blues" (1923), "Moonshine Blues" (1923), "See See Rider Blues" (1924), "Black Bottom" (1927), and "Soon This Morning" (1927). Ma Rainey was known for her very powerful vocal abilities, energetic disposition, majestic phrasing, and a ‘moaning’ style of singing. Her powerful voice was never adequately captured on her records, due to her recording exclusively for Paramount, which was at the time known for its below-average recording techniques and poor shellac quality. However, Rainey's other qualities are present and most evident in her early recordings, "Bo-weevil Blues" and "Moonshine Blues". Rainey recorded with Louis Armstrong in addition to touring and recording with the Georgia Jazz Band. She continued to tour until 1935 when she retired to her hometown. She died of a heart attack on December 22, 1939 at age 53. The featured song is titled "Prove It On Me," recorded in 1928. The song's lyrics allude to Ma Rainey's presumed lesbianism, one of the earliest examples of a gay anthem. #marainey #happybirthday #thisdayinmusic #1920smusic #proveitonme #blues #blueslegends #gaysongs https://www.instagram.com/p/BrEU_Q7Bons/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=fupaz9lc39gb
