1850-1899
This is part of a series in which I am posting clips of my larger project by decade as I finish them. For more about this project, or to ask me to include your doll or OC, check out my pinned post.
Previous posts:
17th century
1700-1739
1740-1769
1770-1799
1800-1849
The OCs in this post that are mine are Charlotte and Jane, Rachel and Abigail, and Hannah and Delia (they're in pairs because I did the Best Friends series based on @americangirlstar's suggestions, and in the process created a Best Friend for each of my own characters). Héloise and Aoife belong to @autistickirstenlarson, Violette belongs to @getintothesun, and Charlotte belongs to @gardner-n-pardner.
While putting together previous installations I became aware that I have the birth dates wrong for several of the canon characters. I'm planning a redo for the canon character set, eventually, so please do let me know if I'm wrong about anyone. I might already know, but since I have pretty severe dyscalculia as well as ADHD it's not bad to have the info available in multiple places.
I also feel that I should repeat the statement I made before that I had a hard time finding accurate, non-exoticizing references for Kaya, Speaking Rain, and Singing Bird's wardrobes without embarking on a level of research way beyond the scope of this project. If someone is reading this who has familiarity with and access to visual references for 19th century Nimiipuu, Salish, and Dakota/Lakota clothing, and the time and patience to help me understand them, I would be very interested in learning.

1850s
Héloise Cormier: 96-99 Kaya'aton'my: 95-99 Speaking Rain: 95-99 Felicity Merriman: 85-94 Elizabeth Cole: 85-94 Rachel Gabay: 70-79 Abigail Schorr: 70-79 Lydia Livingston: 51-60 Caroline Abbott: 49-58 Clara Montoya: 38-47 Josefina Montoya: 36-45 Hannah Kane: 26-35 Delia Freedman: 26-35 Violette Metoyer: 26-35 Aoife Callaghan: 14-23 Cecile Rey: 8-17 Marie-Grace Gardner: 8-17 Kirsten Larson: 6-15 Singing Bird: 6-15 Charlotte Devereux: 1-10 Addy Walker: 0-5 Sarah Moore: 0-5
Charlotte is a fun and interesting character: I made small edits to some of the base poses I use to accommodate her cane, and larger edits to others. I looked up some photos and videos of children with juvenile arthritis, which Charlotte has, to help get it right. Some of the outfits in Charlotte's collection were repeats, so I picked out a few more outfits from the same period that seem like they fit Charlotte's frilly, floral aesthetic. Meanwhile, this decade, Addy and Sarah are both born into slavery, Héloise, Kaya, and Speaking Rain say goodbye, Cecile and Marie-Grace begin wearing full-length, grown-up dresses, and Clara Montoya, ever sensible, tries out a Bloomer suit but finds that it doesn't make her work enough easier to offset the teasing and doesn't make any more of them.

1860s
Felicity Merriman: 95-99 Elizabeth Cole: 95-99 Rachel Gabay: 80-89 Abigail Schorr: 80-89 Lydia Livingston: 61-70 Caroline Abbott: 59-68 Clara Montoya: 48-57 Josefina Montoya: 46-55 Hannah Kane: 36-45 Delia Freedman: 36-45 Violette Metoyer: 36-45 Aoife Callaghan: 24-33 Cecile Rey: 18-27 Marie-Grace Gardner: 18-27 Kirsten Larson: 16-25 Singing Bird: 16-25 Charlotte Devereux: 11-20 Addy Walker: 6-15 Sarah Moore: 6-15 He-Mei Hsieh: 0-4 Florence Coburn: 0-4 Lucy Morgan: 0-4
He-Mei is a placeholder name that probably isn't right for her character. It's a Mandarin name, and she should have a name in Cantonese. Unfortunately I just don't know enough to be able to pick one out without help, so if someone seeing this who speaks Cantonese has a great idea, I'd love to hear it. Ironically, although AG has never made either a Chinese or significantly Disabled Historical doll, He-Mei and Florence owe the most to existing AG characters out of all my OCs. Maybe it's their dedication to getting into trouble.

1870s
Rachel Gabay: 90-99 Abigail Schorr: 90-99 Lydia Livingston: 71-80 Caroline Abbott: 69-78 Clara Montoya: 58-67 Josefina Montoya: 56-65 Hannah Kane: 46-55 Delia Freedman: 46-55 Violette Metoyer: 46-55 Aoife Callaghan: 34-43 Cecile Rey: 28-37 Marie-Grace Gardner: 28-37 Kirsten Larson: 26-35 Singing Bird: 26-35 Charlotte Devereux: 21-30 Addy Walker: 16-25 Sarah Moore: 16-25 He-Mei Hsieh: 5-14 Florence Coburn: 5-14 Lucy Morgan: 5-14 Gertrude Levy: 0-4 Mabel Kaplan: 0-4 Medha/Mahtab: 0-2
The First Bustle Era, with its big, poofy, drapey bustles, shrinks down into a tight, structured column shape. Florence's chair is based on historical examples: it has two large wheels that she can push in the front and one small wheel in the back. It's heavy and difficult for her to push as a kid, and when He-Mei pushes it she can't always see where they are going. I feel like Addy's school suit, in particular, translates well into these stiffer and more structured styles, and Caroline's Christmas dress isn't bad either. Another one that worked out well is Cécile's parlor outfit.

1880s
Lydia Livingston: 81-90 Caroline Abbott: 79-88 Clara Montoya: 68-77 Josefina Montoya: 66-75 Hannah Kane: 56-65 Delia Freedman: 56-65 Violette Metoyer: 56-65 Aoife Callaghan: 44-53 Cecile Rey: 38-47 Marie-Grace Gardner: 38-47 Kirsten Larson: 36-45 Singing Bird: 36-45 Charlotte Devereux: 31-40 Addy Walker: 26-35 Sarah Moore: 26-35 He-Mei Hsieh: 15-24 Florence Coburn: 15-24 Lucy Morgan: 15-24 Gertrude Levy: 5-14 Mabel Kaplan: 5-14 Medha/Mahtab: 3-12 Diya/Nasreen: 0-9 Harriet Shapiro: 0-4 Matilda Greene: 0-4
There's a lot still undecided about the sisters I originally called Diya and Medha but then considered renaming to Nasreen and Mahtab, depending on what kind of backstory would work best for them. Unfortunately, I know more about clothing history than I do about historical waves of immigration. I still think these characters have a good dynamic with each other and I love how their outfits turned out, but I probably won't be fleshing them out much unless I happen to learn a lot more about their potential backgrounds. For the time being, I'm leaving them in the project but I'm focusing more on characters I don't need to do a lot of original research to develop.
The Second Bustle Era is far more stiff and structured than the first, with heavier fabrics and narrower lines. Even the older girls are wearing bustles, while the younger girls often have large bows at the backs of their dresses in imitation of the bustled silhouette. This project first saw a bustled style in the 1680s, they were most famous in the 1880s, and even today we see them now and then on bridal or red carpet gowns.
Tumblr media
1890s
Lydia Livingston: 91-99 Caroline Abbott: 89-98 Clara Montoya: 78-87 Josefina Montoya: 76-85 Hannah Kane: 66-75 Delia Freedman: 66-75 Violette Metoyer: 66-75 Aoife Callaghan: 54-63 Cecile Rey: 48-57 Marie-Grace Gardner: 48-57 Kirsten Larson: 46-55 Singing Bird: 46-55 Charlotte Devereux: 41-50 Addy Walker: 36-45 Sarah Moore: 36-45 He-Mei Hsieh: 25-34 Florence Coburn: 25-34 Lucy Morgan: 25-34 Gertrude Levy: 15-24 Mabel Kaplan: 15-24 Medha/Mahtab: 13-22 Diya/Nasreen: 10-19 Harriet Shapiro: 5-14 Matilda Greene: 5-14 Samantha Parkington: 0-4 Nellie O'Malley: 0-4
The final decade of the 19th century has us saying goodbye to Caroline and Lydia, and hello to Samantha and Nellie. Although it's less dramatic than the first and second bustle eras or even the period between them, this period is surprisingly fun to draw. And it's nice to be ending the century with their wintery formalwear. Happy new year!
As always, to get your historical doll or OC included in this project, HERE'S THE LINK. Obviously if your doll is from earlier than the 20th century they'll have to wait for the next round of drawings, but you're welcome to put them in the form and I'll include them in the next round, which will otherwise focus on the siblings of canon characters.

Assignment 1 Brief: Module Journal and Book Review: Blog
Entry 1: Film Genre
Grant, B.K., 2007. Film genre: From iconography to ideology (Vol. 33). Wallflower Press.
Barry Keith Grant’s Film genre: From iconography to ideology is a book that seeks to elaborate on concept of genre and why it is important in contemporary cinema. Precisely, has delved into the definition of what film genre is and has done this by drawing examples and case studies from different parts of the world. The particular attention that he has placed emphasis on is western films and in particular Hollywood. Barry, as seen in the introductory chapter of his book has explained that film genre refers to a thematic categorization of film. Using the example of film noir, the author has explained that the films that are considered under this genre have the same general themes that include but not limited to cynicism and cynical heroes, elaborate lighting effects and the idea that crime is an idea that the society today benefits from –as it is a way through which peace and justice are secured.
Chapter 3 of the book is about genre and authorship wherein the author invites the idea that the film author, mostly producer, imbues the film with their ideas and belief. Perhaps, this explains why films that are authored by the same person happen to fall within the same genre.  This book has delved into key issues on film genre and underpin the ideas that have been discussed in the module. Specifically, the issues discussed by Barry align with the discussions on film genre as a whole and adds value to what has been learned.
Ekinci, B.T. 2020, ""Youtuber Movies" From New Media to the Cinema", CINEJ Cinema Journal, vol. 8, no. 2, pp. 94-118.
The author of this article has made three main arguments which are all aligned towards the concept of film genre. The author has firstly indicated that as a result of the emergence of new media, old tropes of film and film genres as a whole are being replaced or rearranged. Technology has presented platforms such as YouTube where any user can be able to produce their own film clips and content. The second has also written that the emergence of the internet and computer technology has led to an almost complete overhaul of culture as people are influenced by and influence each other through the internet. Thirdly, with digitalization, the control that the media and film industry had on the audience has diminished. However, the film industry can benefit from these developments as new genres can be developed out of these social cultural shifts.
In the details of the article that author has written that there is a close relationship that is being formed between the traditional media and the new media and the these has created mutual benefits between the film producers and audiences. What this article has highlighted is that in order for a full reconciliation of the traditional and new media to be realised, film genre criticisms are unavoidable. After all, these two media place the old school film industry against an energized and empowered young generation. The common feature that this article has with the Barry Keith Grant book is that they both address the concept of film genre. Further to this, both resources acknowledge that there are changes that are taking place fat in the film industry and this is contesting the status quo of the existing genres. From the lens of film noir, each of the two authors admit that with the changes that have emerged especially in the latter part of the 20th century and the 21st, a new age film nor is inevitable.

 Entry II: Classic Film Noir
The details of the book by Kaplan Women in film noir is testament of the changes that swept across the film industry after the advent of film noir. The author has emphasized that there was an evident role change for women in film when this style/ genre emerged. There is an evident conflict in the role that women should play in an evidently patriarchal society. In film noir, the family and its relationship are the focal point of representations in film. Kaplan has written that film noir illuminated the struggles that existed between men and women in a patriarchal society of the early to mid-20th century. Another issue that is brought out in the Kaplan book is the ordering of sexuality and the patriarchal right especially for men. While men in society are drawn to the sexuality of their female counterparts in society and outside of the family, they are at the same time endevour to emphasize that their masculinity accords them their patriarchal rights. Kaplan notes that there is an evident contradiction in society as depicted in film noir. This contradiction is evidenced in the film Piccadilly (1929) where there is an attempt to resign the female characters Shosho and Mabel to their patriarchal defined roles yet the society, as depicted in film, desires the new found social position where they act and play roles in the public. The latter is in reference to the fact that these two worked in a local restaurant as dancers and performers. Although there are romantic conflicts that emerge between the women characters in the film; Shosho and Mabel, as they fight for the attention of the male protagonist figures, there is an evidently complex depiction of women and their roles. In this case in particular, these women endevour to keep their relationships and families in order yet they are embroiled in their public role in society.
The arguments that are presented by Kaplan highlight important issues in the history of film noir. They especially emphasize how the role of women as subordinate to their male counterparts changed and how this films elevated their roles as objects of the male gaze and desire on the one hand the position in introducing the themes of sexuality and romance. In truth, while film noir caused major shifts in the way patriarchy and role of women were represented and perceived, it was especially important that at this point, women were elevated and could take leading roles in films. Biesen and Chinen (2005) have written a full book on the history of film noir. While the reference of this style cum genre of fil is analyzed retrospectively, the two authors have stated that it is/ was characterized by features such as pessimism, cynicism and death and this often took place in the streets where crime was rife. The origin of film noir is traced in the 1940s and 50s after the second world war and a decade after the Great Depression.  Majorly, the classical film noir films were centered on c rime, detective themes and thriller.

Entry III: Women in Film Noir
The film Laura (1944) has all the hallmarks of a film noir. This is especially so considering that there are numerous female characters who have taken central roles in the film. In fact, the title of the film is indicative of this fact as it is a detective film investigating the death of Laura Hunt, an advertising executive. The detective assigned the task to unmask who Laura’s killer is transported into a web of lies with key suspects being Shelby Carpenter, Laura’s boyfriend and Lydecker, a columnist who mentored Laura. Laura (1944) was told in an interesting narrative way with the plot being the key. Given that the film is styled around film noir, the adventures and thrill of the investigations and the events following the discovery that Lydecker was the killer is what was emphasized on. The narrative, to put it in a few words, is rather complex and twisted making the audience unsure who the eventual antagonist will end up being and, equally important, who will end up being Laura’s lover.
Falling in line with the typologies of female characters in film noir, the characters of Laura and Diane Redfern are accorded the feme fatal characters. On face value, they appear innocent and devoid of any possible harm to anyone. However, as the detective discloses later into the film, they are conniving characters who use their mind, wit and bodies to achieve their cynical objectives. Naremore (2008) has noted that women in film noir play an important yet interesting role that, arguably, was absent in the classical films of other genres. The idea of a feme fatale and good girl next door as the formations of female characters changed the way the male protagonist act and are represented. For the most part and as is depicted in Laura (1944), the two types of women are completely different with the feme fatal seeking to serve her cynical goals while her good girl next door counterpart seeks to do that which is right at all time. For the most part, Naremore (2008), the male protagonist is drawn to the feme fatale owing to her extra ordinary beauty, courage and independence of mind.
On her part, Kaplan holds the view that while film noir has shifted focus away from male characters towards women, there is a conflict that emerged and has to do with the representation of a women as either a family maker or one set out to serve the interest of the society. To this end, Kaplan is fast to clarify that film noir did not always depict women as an object of the male gaze or desire but often added to the complexity of having a female protagonist and characters in crime and thriller films.

Entry IV: E-Book Review of a book on Film Noir
The book that has been selected for review in this section is one that looks at the concept of film genre alongside another related aspect especially in contemporary film, science fiction. Titled Tech-noir: The fusion of science fiction and film noir this book seeks to draw a relationship between film noir and science fiction. This resource is an edited collection wit the first publication dating back in 2008 and has since had a couple of editions. There are two broad ways in which this book relates to the module. Firstly, the book has detailed an analysis of the history of film noir placing its origin to German Expressionist film which has already been discussed in class. A parallel has then been drawn between the developments and changes that have taken place in film noir and science fiction. In the introductory chapters of the book the author has argued using facts that film noir is not a style but rather a genre as it has all the hallmarks of a film genre including style, themes and unique narrative elements.
The primary argument that this book has presented is that there is a close relationship that has always existed between film noir and science fiction. In elaborating this claim, the author has written that each of these two elements cannot exist independent of each other. For one, the author claims, film noir was in part influenced by the social changes that were taking place in society such as war, the Great Depression and scientific developments. Arguably, n a majority of the film noirs in Hollywood and beyond, and where the hallmark elements of cynicism, mystery, crime and surrealism are present, aspects of high tech and science fiction are ever present. In chapters four and six for instance, it has been demonstrated that through the global occurrences such as the atomic bomb development and detonation, the World War II, cinema has been influenced in quite a handful of ways.
The approach of the book and the details that it has offered has shed a few important highlights on the areas of film noir and film genre. For instance, the book has insisted that film noir is classified as a genre because it comprises films that have comparable themes, films that have comparable narrative elements such as the style of narration and aesthetic approaches that are unique. The fact that makes the book original is that it is the first of its kind to delve into the research of a particular genre of film, film noir in this case, and to make a one on one relationship assessment with science fiction. Another aspect that has been highlighted by the film is that there is no one film genre or feature of cinema for that matter that operates independently in a closed circle. There are factors that are beyond film that impact the way these genres develop and advance. Suffice to say, the fact that the author has widely consulted from other books makes this work even more valuable. What is more, there are a handful of case studies of film noir films that are based on science fiction that have been dissected in great details. These include The Matrix, Blade Runner and The Terminator. This, to say the least, adds credibility to the contents of the book.
Although the author chose a unique area of study making the work contained in the book original, there are other research studies that have been done that tried to make connections and links between a genre of film and an aspect of technology. Therefore, this in itself in a way validates the approach that has been taken by the Meehan. The strong point of this book is that it is the crystallization of an ongoing debate on the influence of film noir on other aspects other than film. These influences include culture and fashion. Meeehan (2015) has noted that the intersection of science fiction and film noir has had noticeable influences on contemporary fashion and sub-cultures. One area of weakness identified in the book is that the author has chosen to work with a very wide theme. Science fiction and film noir are by their own rights very broad areas of study and the author could have narrowed down the focus further down. Arguably, the audience that is targeted by this book are researchers and scholars in the fields of cinema and technology. The book is also resourceful to people seeking to understand the history of film especially on genres that are not broadly covered such as horror, romance and teen films.

The production was a hybrid of a film and a live show. Shot cinematically out-of-sequence with multiple cameras and without an audience, the show was nonetheless filmed on a single stage with traditional theatrical lighting. Like Cora, The Underground Railroad takes us on a journey. We go between completely different states, completely different time intervals, various kinds of racism, and meet completely different characters alongside the best way. And what that leaves us with is not only a tackle slavery however on how the remnants of slavery and racism have been embedded in society and the hearts of many individuals. It’s a story of wrestle, ache, and most of all, of survival.
Based mostly on the Colson Whitehead guide of the identical identify, The Underground Railroad reimagines the real-life whisper community of secure homes and hiding locations that smuggled slaves out of the US South to the free states or Canada. On this model, it’s a literal underground railroad with trains and conductors that takes slaves from one state to a different. Cora (Thuso Mbedu) is haunted by the truth that her mom ran away and has had abandonment points since then. When one other slave Caesar (Aaron Pierre), means that she runs away with him, she is first reluctant after which decides to go together with him. We expertise the railroad and the escape routes by Cora’s eyes and the eyes of Ridgeway (Joel Edgerton), a slave-catcher who has a vendetta in opposition to Cora as Cora’s mom, Mabel (Sheila Atim), was the one slave he by no means caught after she ran away.
It’s troublesome to not rave about Mbedu’s efficiency. Cora is such an advanced character, born into ache, raised in ache, and hunted and adopted wherever she goes. Within the uncommon moments when she is allowed a bit of peace – when she is dancing with Caesar in South Carolina, or when she is with Royal (William Jackson Harper) in Indiana – her face virtually transforms, and he or she appears like a totally completely different particular person.

Cameroon separatists sell cryptocurrency as replacement for CFA franc
Cameroon separatists sell cryptocurrency as replacement for CFA franc
Cameroonian separatists fighting for the independence of the self-declared state of Ambazonia have put their own cryptocurrency on sale to the general public. The AmbaCoin aims to provide humanitarian relief to those affected by the conflict in the Anglophone regions with the hope of raising up to 250 million US dollars.
“The initiative is geared towards helping with humanitarian side of things,” says Frank, one of the members of the AmbaCoin project who responded to press enquiries about the cryptocurrency, but wanted to remain anonymous. “That’s the idea behind it – to raise funds to support humanitarian efforts.”
It is hoped that the creation of a currency for so-called Ambazonia will also support efforts to have the breakaway state officially recognised as a country. Creating their own Ambazonian currency enables the separatists to move away from using the CFA franc.
“The idea of AmbaCoin was to get away from the CFA – we don’t see the CFA franc as a legitimate currency for Ambazonia,” says Frank. “If we want to be independent, we can’t pursue a French colonial currency.”
Cameroon’s currency is issued by the Bank of the Central African States which is in turn backed by the French government’s treasury. The CFA franc is pegged to the euro, however, and it has drawn the ire of activists in West and Central African countries in recent years, who have protested France’s continuing influence long after the end of colonialism.
How does it work? AmbaCoin officially went on sale on 28 December with one AmbaCoin token equivalent to 25 US cents. Before the main “crowdsale” the token was offered through a “presale” with 10 percent of the AmbaCoins available. More than 30,000 AmbaCoins had been issued as of 1 January, according to the website.
There are 13 holders of AmbaCoin, according to an analysis available on the Bloxy website, which provides information on public blockchains. One digital wallet address holds almost 42 per cent of the existing AmbaCoins issued.
Supporters of Ambazonia can purchase AmbaCoins through a dashboard on the website . Users can use other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin or Dash to make transactions as well as traditional currencies, including euros, dollars, CFA francs, rand or rubles. The AmbaCoins then reside in an Ethereum digital wallet. The project describes the token being compatible with several existing cryptocurrency digital wallets.
The token itself is built upon existing Ethereum blockchain technology providing a decentralised public ledger. AmbaCoin’s whitepaper describes how transactions are completed using Ethereum’s system of “smart contracts” – a protocol aiming to enforce transactions without a third party.
AmbaCoin is based on the “proof-of-stake” architecture defining how block transactions are dealt with. This approach avoids the need for mining where computing power is used to run different cryptographic calculations.
How can AmbaCoin be used? The project envisages a number of uses for AmbaCoin. The whitepaper describes how supporters can hold onto the token and watch its value appreciate over time, a strategy popularised by BitCoin enthusiasts where to “ hodl ” is to hold onto cryptocurrency rather than sell it. Furthermore, AmbaCoin can be traded to provide a return for investors, according to the project.
It also acts as a digitised form of a treasury bill – “eventually, the Ambazonian nation will purchase it” – and it can be used “to get access to national services”, according to the whitepaper. The AmbaCoin will not be pegged to any particular traditional currency and it aims to become particularly important for remittances from Africans in the diaspora.
Spending on potential humanitarian relief for the Anglophone regions will be decided by AmbaCoin’s board of directors, according to Frank. “They will make that decision,” he says, drawing particular attention to the plight of refugees and internally displaced people who have been hit by the worsening violence in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions.
The crisis that hit the North West and South West regions has already seen humanitarian fundraising efforts. The Cameroonian government in mid-2018 raised almost 20 million euros to help people hit by the fallout of what it says are “acts of terrorism” carried out by separatist groups.
Support from Ambazonian ‘government’ A number of different groups purporting to be the government of Ambazonia have emerged since the self-declaration of independence for Ambazonia in October 2017. The situation on the ground has also evolved, with rival separatist armed groups involved in fighting between themselves as well as with the Cameroonian security forces.
“It’s an initiative of a few individuals,” Chris Anu, a spokesperson for the Federal Republic of Ambazonia, told RFI in response to questions about AmbaCoin. “Our government has not endorsed it.”
The rival Ambazonia Governing Council says it fully endorses AmbaCoin and encourages its supporters to buy the cryptocurrency, describing it as an “ingenious and revolutionary initiative”.
“A group of creative geniuses developed a cryptocurrency designed to foster the Ambazonian revolution, to establish a separate homeland and foster a unique sense of national ownership of our medium of exchange,” says Cho Ayaba, head of the AGC, in emailed comments.
Who is behind it? Those behind AmbaCoin are not immediately known. The project’s whitepaper says the board of directors and development team is “state classified info”. Frank, who describes it as a “freedom currency”, says AmbaCoin takes the legal form of a company registered in South Africa with a bank account under the same name.
Frank says the directors include “Ambazonians across the board” including “some foreign citizens of different nationalities with experience of cryptocurrency”.
AmbaCoin is listed as a company with five directors incorporated in South Africa on 31 October 2018 to an address in Cape Town, according to company documents reviewed by RFI.
A listed director of AmbaCoin is Tshisikhawe Mabel Khangale, a 36-year-old chartered accountant and registered auditor who runs a company called Andisa SA that carries out business registrations.
Another South African connection is Fuler Ayuk Ayamba, who is listed as a director and lives in the Western Cape, according to a 2013 South Africa government gazette.
AmbaCoin extends beyond the African continent. Frank Enoanyi Abange is a director and resides in the US state of Ohio. Abange is listed as the owner of Curantis Healthcare Services Ltd, according to searches with the Ohio Secretary of State. Curantis is described as an “agency provider of services to people with developmental disabilities” and the company is registered as a healthcare provider.
Abange also appears in searches as registering a company called “Ambazonia Mission AGC”, incorporated in Ohio. This non-profit company says it was formed to “promote and to support human, social and self-defence rights of the people of Southern Cameroons (Ambazonia)”. The company’s articles of association include a document called the “Charter of the Ambazonia Mission” which is signed by Cho Ayaba, head of the AGC.
There are two directors who appear to be based in Europe. Julious Nyih Nyiawung features on the website for Ireland’s University College of Dublin Smurfit School as an expert in human resources. He is also listed as an academic on a 2017 list of staff for Kaplan educational institute in Singapore. Nyiawung is frequently described as the vice president of the AGC and on their website is said to be responsible for “human resource mobilisation”.
The fifth director of AmbaCoin is Moses Esim Enoh. He appears in searches linked to Griffith College in Dublin, Ireland. His dissertation on environmental practices in Irish agriculture was published in 2015.
The other name revealed as the author of AmbaCoin’s whitepaper is Bruno Mpako. Mpako appears to reside in Cape Town and describes himself as a “web developer and network expert”. His LinkedIn profile lists him as chief executive officer for Bank Crypto Coin. Frank says Mpako is “one of the technical brains” behind the AmbaCoin project and is acting as one of the chief technologists.
Path to statehood The breakaway state of Ambazonia is not the only self-declared territory to issue its own currency. Somaliland, which declared independence after the fall of military leader Siad Barre in 1991, issues the Somaliland shilling and operates its own central bank.
South Sudan took a different route to issuing its own currency, waiting until it achieved independence before introducing the South Sudanese pound. The country split from Sudan in 2011 and remains the African continent’s youngest country.
Other countries outside of the African continent have been involved in cryptocurrency initiatives. Venezuela’s government launched the petro in early 2018 with President Nicolas Maduro describing it as the cornerstone of efforts to rebuild the country. The petro is said to be backed by oil reserves, but investigations have revealed scant details on the cryptocurrency.
The Marshall Islands is also reportedly launching a cryptocurrency in partnership with an Israeli firm. However, the International Monetary Fund in a September 2018 report says that there are “many risks involved” in issuing a cryptocurrency as legal tender.
Supporters of Ambazonia, such as Frank, see little downside in issuing AmbaCoins for the breakaway state. “We believe the closer Ambazonia gets to being an independent nation – it will affect the value of the coin,” he says.
“People are getting to know cryptocurrency – the more it gets known, the more stable it becomes,” says Frank. “The future is what matters.”
