No spoilers to Star Trek Picard: Firewall, just worldbuilding lore.
But so far, David Mack’s depiction of the Fenris Rangers portray them a hell of a lot more organized than it has previously with Commanders and etc., they’re actually more organized than the Reclamation Agents aka Killjoys from the show Killjoys.
I don’t fault Mack for trying to bring some logic and sense to how Rangers operates.
Because what the hell does this word salad even mean???
decentralized, non-hierarchal, quasi-anarchist affiliation of independent operators working in and around the former Neutral Zone, pledged to defend the weak and vulnerable from the predations of the strong and unscrupulous. (source: Michael Chabon).
It seems Fenris Rangers are more professionally run Killjoys:
youtube
But also its very different with how Kirsten Beyer presented how Fenris Rangers operated in No Man’s Land, which was more loose-y goosey free wheeling organization.
Whose canon will take precedence in the Trek Litverse? Only time will tell.

This is the episode novelization of the episode Relics. It has the Enterprise-D finding Montgomery Scott stuck in a transporter in a ship that crashed 75 years before on the outside of a Dyson Sphere. Oh, and the Enterprise gets sucked into the sphere too.
It has been awhile since I've seen the episode, but, if I recall, this is a pretty accurate novelization of the epi. A good combo of the actual happenings in the episode with some good extra stuff too. A short and fun read.

Which Star Trek Books Are Canon?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Imagine there’s no VHS tapes. I wonder if you can. For the earliest Trekkies, the ability to own your favorite episode of Star Trek wasn’t difficult, it was impossible. This meant that some other media was required to record the true logs of the USS Enterprise. Enter books. The most reliable data storage device in history, and the first and possibly best destiny for Star Trek merch.
Since 1967, there have literally been thousands of officially licensed Star Trek books published. The question is, if fans only care about “real” canon do any of the Star Trek books actually qualify as part of the “real” story of the Final Frontier.  The answer doesn’t fall into a simple binary. Star Trek books have been an integral part of the growth of the franchise since the very beginning. Here’s a quick and dirty guide to the mixed canonicity of the various Star Trek books.
A very brief history of Star Trek tie-in books.
In terms of U.S. book publishers of officially licensed Star Trek print fiction (excluding roleplaying games), there have really only been two publishers. First was Bantam, which published the very first novelizations of episodes from The Original Series. Written by James Blish, these books have a strange canonicity insofar as there are not really direct novelizations of TOS episodes. Instead, the Blish stories almost read like impressionistic notions of what Star Trek would be like if it existed as a series of 1950s short stories. This isn’t to say Blish’s novelizations are bad — they’re great! It’s just that they are very different from the aired episodes. Most of the time this is because Blish was working from early scripts, but even more often it was because just like the readers, it wasn’t like he was able to rewatch the episodes over and over again to make sure he got it “right.” In his version of “Arena,” the Gorn even has a tail!
Blish also wrote the first “original” Star Trek novel, titled Spock Must Die! This refers to a transporter duplicate of Spock, who is created on accident during a long-range beaming gambit at the beginning of the novel. This novel slaps, even if it does open with a long conversation about the metaphysics of beaming in which nearly nobody sounds like they’re in character. In any case, the success of Blish’s novelizations and Spock Must Die! led to more original short story collections and novels. However, by the end of the 1970s, Bantam lost the license for Trek books, and it was subsequently snatched-up by Simon & Schuster, where it remains to this day.
Are the post-Blish Star Trek novelizations canon?
In 1979, Pocket Books (an imprint of Simon & Schuster) began Trek fiction anew with the publication of the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, written by Gene Roddenberry. So, this counts as canon, right? It’s the novelization of The Motion Picture and it’s written by the Great Bird of the Galaxy himself.
Well… the novelization of The Motion Picture begins with a forward from Kirk himself, in which he makes all sorts of interesting claims. For one thing his middle name is Tiberius. This checks out— that’s canon! (Although the Tiberius thing wasn’t spoken aloud until Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.) But, after Kirk’s intro, we also get a scene where Starfleet sends him signals straight into his brain via something called a “senceiver implant.” Basically, Kirk has a top-secret implant in his brain that lets him receive classified data—just downloaded straight in there, like cyberpunk style. Obviously, there is no reference to this brain implant in other Star Trek canon, which makes the one and only Trek novel written by Gene Roddenberry either a classified document, or mostly non-canon.
If you jump ahead to the David Gerrold novelization of Star Trek: The Next Generation premiere “Encounter at Farpoint,” you’ll discover that Jean-Luc Picard was getting over the death of a girlfriend named “Celeste” right before he took command of the Enterprise. Gerrold was on staff with TNG at the time, and of course, wrote “The Trouble With Tribbles.” But, it’s not like we’ve heard about Celeste in Jean-Luc’s other adventures.
Star Trek books tend not to be holistically canon, but do seem to create canon.
Not only was Kirk’s middle name affirmed by Roddenberry’s TMP novel, but Sulu’s first name, Hikaru, also came from a Star Trek novel. 1981’s The Entropy Effect, written by Vonda N. McIntyre first established Sulu’s first name, which was later made canon on screen in The Undiscovered Country.
Similarly, another famous helm officer in Starfleet — Keyla Demter — got her first name from the Star Trek: Discovery novel Desperate Hours, written by David Mack and published before a single episode of Discovery had even aired. But, the name Keyla stuck, and as long as she’s on DISCO, she owes her first name to a Star Trek novel.
So which Star Trek books are canon?
If you’re looking to find out which Star Trek books completely adhere to canon in the way the newer Star Wars books (supposedly) do, it’s kind of tough. That said, literally everything published since 2017 has been closely connected to what you’re seeing on the various new Star Trek TV shows. For example, remember that mysterious character “San” that Georgiou talked about in Season 3? (Remember those scary, bloody flashbacks?) Well, that character is mentioned in a recent Discovery novel Die Standing by John Jackson Miller, which, yes, was published before Season 3 aired.
Miller also wrote the book The Enterprise War, which reconciled what was going on with Pike and the Enterprise during the Klingon War in Discovery Season 1. This book also managed to fix a strange canon gap created by the novel Desperate Hours in which Pike and the Enterprise teamed-up with the USS Shenzhou and Burnham before the events of Discovery. Basically, Burnham and Spock hung-out in Mack’s novel way before Discovery Season 2 happened. But, in Miller’s novel, all of that was fixed with a few lines.
Picard: Countdown and the Discovery comics
Most hardcore Discovery and Picard fans probably know this, but writer Kirsten Beyer was a longtime Voyager novelist before joining the writing team of Discovery, and then, later, co-creating Picard. This means that nearly all the tie-in fiction she’s involved with that connects to the new shows has some whiff of legit canonicity to it. For example, Beyer was behind the Star Trek: Picard — Countdown comics, which were published in late 2019, right before Picard debuted. These comics give you a full background of what Raffi and Picard were doing during the evacuation of Romulan space, and also introduce the characters of Laris and Zhaban. Because their backstories are established in this comic, co-written by Beyer, it seems pretty legit to think that, yes, this all completely counts. Some of Beyer’s other comic stories like Discovery: Aftermath also feel pretty close to being actual canon.
Missing New Trek? Just Read the New Books!
With the post-2017 novels and the contemporary comics, Star Trek print fiction is closer to being canon than it ever has been before. Meaning, if you’re wondering where to start with Star Trek books that feel like they actually “count,” the new stuff — like Una McCormack’s The Last Best Hope or James Swallow’s The Dark Veil—is actually pretty close! Reading the new books is easy, too, because you don’t have to go searching for which books actually “count.” Just find the new Picard and Discovery books! There’s a good chance those are closer to canon than they’re not.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
So, go ahead, boldly read the new books that some fans have never read before. You just might find something in those pages that even Kirk’s top-secret brain chip doesn’t know about. Yet.

  Tell us about your book:
Jordan’s World is about a young woman, Jordan Lewis. At 17, she and her mother are abducted by extraterrestrials and taken to an Earth-like world and marooned there. Algoran is colder and harsher in some ways than our world but it has its charms, too. It is almost entirely bereft of what we would consider modern technology and a natural paradise. But it has many dangers.
Jordan and her mother have to adapt to this new environment in order to survive. It helps that they are taken in by a friendly tribe called the Mokta. But Jordan and her mom have to learn a new language, culture and find new roles for themselves on Algoran. It’s challenging but also has its rewards.
After four years of living on Algoran, Jordan learns that the beings who brought her there may live on the other side of the world. She and three of her companions set out for answers – and possibly a way back to Earth. But which world will Jordan decide is her home?
There is a strong spiritual component to the book as well. During Jordan’s quest to find the beings she calls “The Abductors,” she faces a near-death experience and is given a choice by God. Her decision is life-changing but not in a predictable way. The theme of this book is that God reigns over all creation; there is nowhere He can’t reach us, no matter our circumstances.
What influenced you to write your current genre?
I write Christian fiction. I started off wanting to write a fantasy novel but I’m too much of a Star Trek geek. It ended up being Science-Fantasy – and a trilogy. I used to only read Star Trek books for over a decade, because I love that particular fictional universe.
  Who are your favorite authors?
David Mack, Dayton Ward, Keith R.A. Decandido, Kirsten Beyer, Michael A. Martin, Christopher Bennett and James Swallow
  What are your favorite books?
Star Trek Destiny (trilogy);Star Trek Enterprise: Kobayashi Maru and Under the Raptor’s Wing;Star Trek Voyager: Distant Shores (anthology);Star Trek Titan: Taking Flight, The Red King and Over A Torrent Sea; Star Trek Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind
Who are your favorite literary characters?
Captain William T. Riker, Captain Jean Luc Picard, Captain James T. Kirk, Lt. Cmdr. Trip Tucker. Commander T’Pol and quite a few other supporting characters in Star Trek.
Is there anything you want to share with potential readers?
I love to put twists in my stories, but they always serve a purpose. I don’t shock for the sake of shock, it has to benefit the overall story. And it’s still fun!

We sat at the bar waiting on Anthony, it seemed like forever. Finally I said something.
MARC - "Kevin, you may want to check on Anthony.""
KEVIN - "I am sure he is fine. He is probably down on the dance floor or something."
TORIC - "We've been up here at the bar for over an hour and he still has not came up."
KEVIN- "Trust me, he is fine. He probably had a drink and he is mingling or something."
Mingling? Dancing? Or molding a piece of clay on the dance floor???
Tumblr media
Another hour passed, still no Anthony.
KEVIN - "Maybe I should go check on him?"
MARC - "Yeah, something may have happened."
KEVIN - "If he had any alcohol, I am sure something has. He does not hold his liquor well, AT ALL.."

Kevin was right. He had a drink, so he found a nice comfortable spot in a corner and fell asleep...

I keep going back to what Kirsten Beyer said in the BTS for Stardust City Rag
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kirsten Beyer: "What we expect of our Star Trek heroes is that they will be able to overcome the very natural Human instincts that would in that case demand revenge." [snip] "I'm torn because my lifelong love for Star Trek tells me the same thing that the reason these people are our heroes is because they always manage to find their way to the light. But what a show like Picard is very intentionally and conscientiously doing is making the darkness a little bit deeper and darker. I sort of understand the necessity of a story like this."
Beyer hinted how much she struggled with this choice and writing this story for Seven. She gets why but it's something I feel she still struggles with because when David Mack wrote Firewall -- Beyer made sure to walk Mack back when he had a scene where Seven just killed a lot of people and walked it off.
Mack gave credit to Kirsten for pulling him back from that and how Kirsten made sure to note that 2 years post-Voyager, Seven of Nine wouldn't be just cavalier about killing people.
And that in Stardust City Rag Seven was driven to that point.
I've now read Kirsten Voyager's relaunch novels and I get why Kirsten had some reservations.
As for Jeri Ryan, as an actress, of course, she loves this kind of stuff-- the more gut-wrenching, the better the acting exercise it is for her. The one Jeri Ryan had trouble with is Seven's new speech pattern. It's only when Jonathan del Arco shared the insight that Seven might have just been masking/becoming more Human for survival
Personally, I don't have a problem with Seven killing Bjayzl, the cold open has given enough reason why Seven would.
Although I don't think Seven killed Bjayzl's guards.
When Seven killed Bjayzl her blaster (phaser?) color was red:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then when the guards stormed in, Seven's blaster colors turned blue:
Tumblr media
So she was, at most, stunning them on her way out.
Seven executed Bjayzl but only Bjayzl. She played judge, jury, and executioner but also as Seven said in that part of the 'verse (I refuse to consider Freecloud as part of the Federation) there was no law.
Also, killing Bjayzl might have also stopped the Borg harvester operation-- at least in her organization.
Anyway, I wish we saw Seven's soul searching after she killed Bjayzl.
How she went from here:
Tumblr media
To this moment in the season finale of Picard s1:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can make the leap in my head how Seven got there -- how after so many years of searching Bjayzl finally got her revenge and in the end... apart from the moment of satisfaction. It didn't really assuage her pain.
But on the show, we didn't really see this soul searching onscreen since Seven wasn't a main character in Picard s1 -- on Voyager we would be following her all the way to the end of the episode. But also, the show was called "Picard" not "Seven of Nine". And it only had 10 episodes, there's not enough runway to showcase this.
One of my favorite moments in The Originals is after finally enacted her vengeance on someone who made it impossible for Hayley to be with her infant daughter.
And how in the end, that revenge didn't even do anything.
I feel Seven needed to walk that dark path, so she could find her own way back, following her own road out.

Patient reported outcomes in NRG Oncology RTOG 0938, evaluating two ultrahypofractionated regimens for prostate cancer
Publication date: Available online 18 June 2018 Source:International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics Author(s): Himanshu R. Lukka, Stephanie L. Pugh, Deborah W. Bruner, Jean-Paul Bahary, Colleen A.F. Lawton, Jason A. Efstathiou, Rajat J. Kudchadker, Lee E. Ponsky, Samantha A. Seaward, Ian S. Dayes, Darindra D. Gopaul, Jeff M. Michalski, Guila Delouya, Irving D. Kaplan, Eric M. Horwitz, Mack Roach, Wayne H. Pinover, David C. Beyer, John O. Amanie, Howard M. Sandler, Lisa A. Kachnic BackgroundThere is considerable interest in very short (ultrahypofractionated) radiotherapy regimens to treat prostate cancer based on potential radiobiological advantages, patient convenience and resource allocation benefits.ObjectiveTo demonstrate that detectable changes in health related quality of life measured by the bowel and urinary domains of the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC-50) were not substantially worse than baseline.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsXXXX is a non-blinded randomized phase II study of NCCN low risk prostate cancer where each arm is compared to a historical control.Intervention(s)Patients were randomized to five fractions (7.25Gy in two weeks), or twelve fractions (4.3Gy in 2.5 weeks).Outcome Measurements and Statistical AnalysisThe co-primary endpoints were the proportion of patients with a change in EPIC bowel score at one year (baseline to one-year) >five points and in EPIC urinary score >two points tested with a one-sample binomial test.Resultsand Limitations: 127 patients were enrolled to five fractions (121 analyzed) and 128 to twelve fractions (125 analyzed). Median follow-up for all patients at the time of analysis was 3.8 years. The one year frequency for >five point change in bowel score for five and twelve fractions were 29.8%(p<0.001) and 28.4%(p<0.001) respectively. The one year frequency for >two point change in urinary score for five and twelve fractions were 45.7%(p<0.001) and 42.2%(p<0.001) respectively. For five and twelve fractions 32.9% of patients had a drop in 1 year EPIC sexual score ≥ 11 points (p=0.34) while 30.9% of patients had a drop in 1 year EPIC sexual score ≥11 points (p=0.20) in the twelve fraction arm respectively. DFS at two years is 93.3% (95% CI: 88.8, 97.8) and 88.3% (95% CI: 82.5, 94.0) in the five and twelve fraction arms, respectively. There was no late grade 4 or 5 treatment-related urinary or bowel toxicity.ConclusionsThis study confirms that based on changes in bowel and urinary domains and toxicity (acute and late) the five and twelve fractions regimens are well tolerated. These ultrahypofractionated approaches need to be compared to current standard radiotherapy regimens
Teaser
The urinary and rectal quality of life outcomes reported by prostate cancer patients undergoing 5 & 12 prostate radiotherapy treatments are comparable to current standard 38-44 radiotherapy treatments. These shorter radiotherapy treatments need to be compared to the current standard radiotherapy treatments in a larger study. https://ift.tt/2t7fJmg

In Mosiac Jeri Taylor looked at Captain Janeway’s life in detail (which has mostly been changed in the books and on TV). That was so much fun, and so, in this book, Taylor takes on the rest of the crew and their stories before they were on Voyager too.
From Harry to Chakotay to B’Elanna, and even Seven of Nine and Kes. My favorite story in this one was definitely B’Elanna’s, followed closely by Harry’s. All the stories were complicated (as humans and in this case humanoids are in fiction), but, Harry’s journey and B’Elanna’s just hit closer in a lot of ways.
As with Janeway’s life, on the one hand, Jeri Taylor was one of the co-creators of the Voyager series, and, so, you’d think that she’d have the scoop on what’s in the series’ bible. On the other hand, while a lot of this background on the characters is correct because she’s one of the co-creators, some of it has been changed. Either in the course of Voyager, or since Voyager.
Still, it’s always fun to see where those who create these TV serieses heads are at. Who they think the characters are vs. who the characters sorta turn into when they are put into the world and the fans get to decide who the characters are.

New PAC seeks to elect openly LGBT candidates in Md.
A new political action committee that seeks to elect openly LGBT people in Maryland will hold its inaugural event on Thursday in Silver Spring.
A new political action committee that seeks to elect openly LGBT candidates in Maryland will officially launch on Thursday.
The Maryland LGBT PAC will hold its inaugural event at Denizens Brewing Co. in Silver Spring.
A press release notes Kris Fair, an LGBT activist who ran for the Frederick Board of Aldermen in 2017, and Brian Gaither, an advocate who lives in Baltimore, will host the event.
“There are a number of strong non-political organizations serving the state’s LGBT community,” said Fair. “But, we’ve really been lacking the one that will get more people to run as openly LGBT candidates and then help them get elected.”
Maryland LGBT PAC has endorsed Gender Rights Maryland Executive Director Dana Beyer and Jamie O’Marr in their races for the Maryland Senate. Maryland LGBT PAC is also supporting Gabriel Acevero, Mila Johns, Ashanti Martinez, Patrick Armstrong, Kevin Mack and George Zokie in their races for the Maryland House of Delegates.
Julie Verratti co-owns Denizens Brewing Co. Alec Ross — who is among the Democrats running to succeed Republican Gov. Larry Hogan — in February named Verratti as his running mate.
The LGBTQ Victory Fund has endorsed state Sen. Rich Madaleno (D-Montgomery County) in the Maryland governor’s race.
“After this election cycle, we’re going to build out our organizational capacity and representation,” said Fair. “We plan to be a significant force in the local elections of 2020 and to play a broader role in the elections of LGBTQ people in the 2022 state elections.”

206: Almost Too Much Latitude
David Mack: Desperate Hours. A new Star Trek series is a huge deal to Trek fandom. It's a pretty rare occurrence, and what's even rarer is a first novel that looks and feels anything like the actual show! But thanks to Discovery writer and tie-in guru Kirsten Beyer, the novels and the show are linked together like never before, and we as fans get to read about the adventures of Discovery at almost the same instant the show hits screens!
In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther welcome author David Mack to talk about his new Discovery novel, Desperate Hours. We discuss the process of collaboration with Discovery's writers, Captain Pike's devotion to duty, Enterprise vs. Shenzhou, the Shenzhou's bridge crew, comparisons to the Vanguard series, Spock and Burnham, the look and feel of the universe, the book's non-canon status, and finish up with what David Mack has on the horizon.

Dave Puls of Lodi High School named Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week
The Packers have announced that Dave Puls of Lodi High School in Lodi, Wis., has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week.
Puls, in his 14th year as the varsity head coach of Lodi, led the Blue Devils to a 55-24 victory over the Lake Mills High School L-Cats, on Friday, Sept. 15. Both teams entered the contest undefeated at 4-0. The win marks the third year in a row the Blue Devils have started the season 5-0. The team looks to stay perfect as they head into Lakeside Lutheran High School to take on the Warriors on Friday, Sept. 22.
“Going into the game, we knew it was going to be a very competitive battle with Lake Mills,” Puls said. “It was back and forth 14-14, then we got up 21-14 and from there things kind of started going our way a little bit. It was a big win. Obviously Lake Mills was ranked very high in various polls, so we knew the competition was going to be really high. They beat us head to head at our place last year, so we were looking forward to a rematch and kind of seeing if we could get the upper hand on them, and it just worked out really well for us.”
Puls was born in Kansas City, Mo., but graduated from Hilbert High School in Hilbert, Wis., in 1987. In high school, Puls was a three sport athlete playing football, basketball and track and field. Puls played running back for Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame member, Michael Moreau. Following high school, he went on to graduate from St. Norbert College in 1992. While at St. Norbert, Puls played football for Coach Don LaViolette as a fullback.
Puls began his coaching career in 2000 as the head coach of the freshman football team for Lodi High School. Before taking the head coaching position for the varsity team in 2004, Puls was the head coach of the junior varsity football team from 2002 until 2003.
Puls was honored to be named this week’s Packers Coach of the Week.
“To know that it’s a statewide award and there are so many great high school coaches and football programs out there, it’s really humbling,” said Puls. “All the credit really goes to our coaching staff and our players for what they do. It means a ton. One of our sayings here at Lodi is ‘Lodi Pride, Lodi Pride!’ and this is just a perfect example of what it means to be a Lodi Blue Devil, and what it means to have Lodi pride.”
Puls and his staff oversee a program of 77 players, with 60 of them suiting up for varsity games. His assistant staff includes Karl Sachtjen, Rick Mack, Patrick Walsh, Drew Ryan, Jason Murray, Kelby Mack, Pete Moskal, Gordy Beyer, Kyle Mack, Jason Murray, Richie Hamann and Dustin Robinson.
In addition to coaching football, Puls is also one of the special education teachers at Lodi High School.
Puls and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter, Ella, and a son, Brady.
