My Draconian rambling :D

DISCLAIMER: I am by all accounts an amateur and I could definitely be wrong about a lot of this. I also could be missing a lot. If you have any thoughts, I’d love to discuss !

The apparent Draconian (DR) sounds and orthography seem pretty unremarkable but I do have some thoughts. Given the presence of ⟨a⟩, ⟨e⟩, ⟨i⟩ and ⟨o⟩, I speculate that ⟨u⟩ also exists. Of course, there's no real way to know how they sound until we hear it. There’s also a ⟨th⟩ which I suspect to represent /θ/ rather than /th/, with ⟨ch⟩ being /t̠ʃ/ and ⟨sh⟩ being /ʃ/.

Convention is that an apostrophe represents a glottal stop or a contraction, and since they don’t appear between vowels in DR I assume they aren’t glottal stops.

DR EXCERPTS TRANSLATIONS

h'chath shka-lev long may you burn

machar lo'k dachva-lev I burn brighter knowing you

mish kadrach f'al your eyes are as hungry as a foot

hal'clahar fejh alm'ok I have a meatgrinder at home

I suspect ‘lev’ makes the preceding word an adverb (e.g. ‘dachva’ → ‘dachva-lev’ = ‘brighter’ → ‘more brightly’). It doesn’t seem like it’s a tense/mood/etc. modifier, nor a case marker, nor a pronoun.

Speaking of pronouns, it looks like pronouns as subjects aren’t necessary. The sentences ‘machar lo'k dachva-lev’ and ‘hal'clahar fejh alm'ok’ both begin with ‘I’ in the translation but share no Draconian words. ‘Machar’ and ‘hal’clahar’ both end in ‘ar’ which could indicate that they’re both inflected for the same subject, i.e. ‘I’. If they are, it may be that Draconian (at least sometimes) omits subject pronouns and inflects verbs for person — similar to Italian or Spanish (think ‘tengo una picadora de carne’; ‘ho un tritacarne’). Considering this, ‘h’chath’ may be ‘burn’ inflected for 2nd person and optative mood. It does seem strange to me that ‘I have’ would be so seemingly complex (‘hal’clahar’) while ‘meatgrinder’ would be the tiny ‘fejh’. Also, ‘lo’k’ would have to mean ‘knowing you’. I’m still unsure about all this.

If those words are indeed verbs, that would probably make DR a Subject-Verb-Object language, making it (most likely) prepositional. ‘Alm’ok’ could mean ‘at home’, but honestly, I’m very unsure about the apostrophes in this language — when are they used? Why? I can’t for the life of me tell.

The fact that there are only 3 (or 4) words in the DR for ‘your eyes are as hungry as a foot’ makes me think DR is a no-copula language, meaning they literally say ‘your eyes hungry’ rather than ‘your eyes ARE hungry’.

That’s all my thoughts, and they mostly don’t make sense. Part of me wonders if all this is for nothing and Jessica’s just making stuff up. But we’ll see! It’s fun to think about anyhow. Hope you enjoyed lmao
