musical theatre challenge: 1/3 costumes | amalia balash in she loves me (2016)
"SHE LOVES ME was set in the 1930s, which was a period in fashion with a stylish signature. I referenced fashion designers Elsa Schaiparelli and Madeleine Vionnet, whose designs dominated the look of the decade, and contrasted those images with actual photographs of the time to give a feeling of idealized realism and then accented with Art Deco architecture." — Jeff Mahshie, costume designer

I mixed up Arabic and English in trying to say “mashed chickpeas” and instead said “hummus mahshi” (stuffed chickpeas). and now I’m imagining, with intrigued horror, what the process of coring and stuffing several hundred chickpeas would be like

Eid Mubarak :)
I'm so sorry this is a little late, but Eid Mubarak to everyone who celebrates! (And Selamat Hari Raya to folks who come from where I come from! <3)
Here's a little snippet of Rayyan and MC back home, celebrating :)
Part I.
Rayyan's family have just gotten back from their neighbourhood mosque, and now they're busy with the finishing touches to the meal preparations.
Little Mahaila is still a little too young to help out, but she doesn't wanted to miss out on all the fun, so Rayyan hoists her up to the kitchen counter, and Mahaila keeps up a constant stream of chatter directed at MC, while Rayyan and their mother busy themselves with the cooking.
Already the counter is laden with huge colorful dishes, and the smell is to die for. Mahaila's pointing out each of the dishes to MC one-by-one, and Rayyan and their mother occasionally chime in with details and little family anecdotes and recipe instructions.
There's Mahshi—stuffed peppers with tomato sauce, her grandparents' favorite, Batatis bil frakh—potatoes with chicken, her dad's favorite, and Mesaka’a—oven roasted eggplant with ground beef, which is Rayyan's favorite. Rayyan no longer quite remembers how it had tasted, back in Cairo, but ever since they'd moved to Seattle, the dish has become a family specialty, mostly because all the ingredients can be easily found in the grocery shops in Seattle.
Part II.
Rayyan's mother holds a spoon out to Rayyan. "Come, help me taste the Molokhia," she says. "Does it need more cilantro?"
Rayyan takes a big mouthful of the thick green soup which always tastes a little too healthy, in their opinion. They scrunch up their face, swallow, and nod—a little weakly.
Their mother smacks them on the arm and snorts. "I don't know why I bother," she says, shaking her head and bustles over to offer it to MC instead.
The shock of the taste makes MC blink, then breathe out softly, before allowing it to swirl around their tongue, delightfully distinct from anything they've ever tasted. They detect chicken broth, which forms the strong, comforting base, then the delicate and familiar layers of cilantro, garlic, salt and pepper, but there's another taste—strong and clean—cutting through everything else. "Wow," they breathe, genuinely astounded. "It's amazing. What is it?"
Rayyan's mother beams at MC. "I think what you are tasting is the leaf of jute tree. I am happy you like it. It is my favorite too." She nudges Rayyan in the ribs. "We have good taste. Unlike this one."
Rayyan makes a face at you. "Suck up," they whisper, for your ears only, but even their usual knitted brows can't hide the big grin that's spreading across their face.
Part III.
A loud clatter interrupts your conversation, and Rayyan looks up in alarm, still swiping at their mouth with an arm. Ishaq, one of Rayyan's twin brothers, pauses guiltily mid-stride, about halfway to the kitchen door. You hadn't noticed him come in. In his hands, there's a big bowl of kahk—nut cookies dusted with sugar. A bunch of cutlery lie on the floor, knocked over in his rush to escape with the loot.
Mahaila, beaming, lips also stained with the evidence of powdered sugar, helpfully points a finger at her brother.
"You already ate like five of them," Rayyan's mother scolds, taking the plate from Ishaq and placing it firmly on the table. "Shoo now! Before I ban you from kahk for life!"
His jaw drops, and he quickly scurries away obediently.
Rayyan snorts at you, and sees you eyeing the cookies curiously. They pick one out of the plate, then close the distance between you, smiling. "Would you like one?" they ask, voice dipping low as they lean in closer to you.
Part IV.
MC's heart flutters, and they hop off the counter, face now inches from Rayyan's. "If it's as sweet as you are," MC says, grinning, "then yes."
Rayyan bring a hand up, then pop the sweet treat into MC's mouth, studying their expression closely.
There's an immediate burst of rich, nutty sweetness. MC lets out a soft groan of appreciation.
Rayyan laughs, then brings their thumb up to wipe the sugar from MC's bottom lip, green eyes sparkling. MC catches their hand. That's when Rayyan leans in for a quick kiss, tasting the sweetness of soft sugar on MC's lips. When they finally step back, there's an infuriatingly smug smile on their face. "The cookies are good this year, aren't they? I helped make them."

Can I see the paper you mentioned about the supposed racism that idf is racist for not touching Palestinian women l. Not that I don’t believe you I just need to see it for myself
I can’t find the paper itself, but several blog posts and articles and websites mention such a paper. It’s an argument made by a doctoral candidate, Tal Nitzan. Some of the arguments made by that paper are discussed in the website linked, but the author admits that he nor the person he talked to could find the paper, even though it had been published.
There’s also an Intifada II era article by Ronit Lentin that does talk about historical sexual violence committed by Israeli troops (but feels no need to mention sexual violence historically committed by Arab troops interestingly). In it she cites Suheir Aszzouni Mahshi, who wrote in 1995 about two Palestinian women she knew who were assaulted in prison.
Her complaint was that the guards used sticks because (by her assessment) the Palestinian women “were not worthy to be touched.” So not only is that source anecdotal, but her conclusions are based on her own intuition and not rigorously conducted academic research. But her conclusion fits this pattern of trying to racially politicize a lack of penile rape. For instance, she doesn't consider that perhaps these guards knew that should they be caught, using a stick instead of their penises might incur a lesser punishment? I don't know anything about Israeli laws, but "they're so racist omg" is not the first conclusion I would come to?
Ronit Lentin's paper however does assert that Israeli soldiers have committed sexual violence in the past, and that there's an aversion to discussing that today. That's still true. We know this is true. Jewish and Arab armies used sexual violence or the threat thereof as a weapon during the war.
The reason the IDF today doesn't really rape anyone is not because Palestinian women are too icky to inflict that kind of violence on (historically that's not the case). It's also not that they're more moral, but because they're more well trained. They're a professional citizen army. They're answerable to the politicians who are answerable to the electorate, but they also are the electorate. The IDF is structured so that a soldier who engages in misconduct can be held accountable.
To call the absence of a certain abuse proof of an underlying abusive motivation is bizarre, and not really how evidence is treated in the West, so granted. But these ideas are not fringe per se. I know many pro Palestinian voices know about them, because they invert them to use against Jews. That's why they specifically target Mia Schem, claim she's offended that the man holding her wouldn't assault her.
If you read/listen to her testimony, she was afraid that he would! But that is used against her too, wow how dare she assume the Brown man (who is probably the same skin tone as her lol) would ever be a sexual threat! White woman tears! This is just like Emmitt Till!
The entire reason they invert claims like this is because they know the original claim is absurd, that Jewish men are racist for not raping Arab women. So they repackage it as something they want you to believe Jews are saying instead, so that you can bask in the absurdity of the lie of Zionist Victimhood. And for some of them, I'm willing to bet they secretly wish they could assault girls like Mia Schem.
Because to say Jewish women are lying about being raped but also have some kind of fixation with being raped, are offended they weren't raped... you know "it didn't happen but the bitch wanted it/deserved it" type talk... the men claiming this want to rape Jewish women. It's obvious. And the women claiming this want to watch men rape Jewish women.
They're rapists but for lack of opportunity. And I'm comfortable claiming that.

SONG OF THE CRIMSON NILE: Bargain, Part Two
Part two of my of my previous post. Amen took the seat directly in front of her on the opposite end of the table. Eva noticed his plate already contained dry fish and mahshi, a wooden cup perched to his lips. He sipped and started to cut into his food, the sound of a knife audible to her ears.
She peered down at her plate. Hers was filled to the edges, but now if she were to dig in, it'd taste like the desert sand on her tongue. She pushed her food away, Amen watching her.
"I'm not hungry anymore," she shook her head.
A loud rumble caused her to shrink back, internally cursing herself. Amen raised a brow.
"Don't be stupid, Evthys," he chided. "You haven't eaten all day."
"And I don't plan on it," she retorted snarkily. "How do I know it's not poisoned? That you'll do away with me at my hunger?"
Amen slammed his utensils on the table, the plinking so loud it caused her to stiffen.
"Do you really think I'd sink so low?" He hissed. "If I wanted you dead, you would've been by now. You won't do any good starving yourself, and even if you did, you'd still be given your meals accordingly, because you're in MY house under MY orders...and I don't think it'd be wise to go hungry."
Eva glared daggers at him. No matter how much she wanted to protest, now wasn't the time to be selfish. She needed to eat, even if it meant taking it from the man she didn't want feeding her. She picked up her knife, cut a piece of fish, and plopped it in her mouth.
It was salmon, she realized. It slid down her throat with ease, making her cut off another, and another. The fish was rich, juicy, and delicious. When she tasted the other foods, they were just as good. She could stuff her mouth, and she'd still want seconds with a full belly. Soon, her mouth was so full she had to take one gulp of wine to wash it down, some of it dribbling down her chin.
Amen watched as she wiped her mouth with a napkin before cutting into his own food once more. He snacked on a piece of mahshi, combining it with fish. Now it was Eva's turn to watch him. Her cheeks crimsoned at the flexing of his jaw when he chewed, the way his throat bobbed as he swallowed, it was cathartic, the hunger melting from her eyes until reality snapped in.
No, no, no! He took you from your loved ones! Don't be fooled. She shook her head and continued to eat, distracting herself with another swig of wine.
"Are my friends ok?" Her voice broke the silence. "Are they really safe?"
Amen's jaw ticked. "You asking me is surprising. Considering this arraingement...yes. They are ok. Titian is looking after them."
"Is that supposed to comfort me?" Eva frowned. "I don't know if I can take the word of the supreme Epistates seriously, considering he dragged me miles away from my home."
"Save it, Evthys," Amen shut her down. "As long as you cooperate, no harm will come to you or your loved ones. Do your job here well, and you'll not give me reason to punish you."
"Oh such joy," Eva replied sarcastically. "I bet your parents must be proud that their son's a killer."
Amen's eyes twitched, fueled with rage. He suddenly wanted to strangle her, cut her throat for even MENTIONING his parents. How dare she insult them? He eyed her dangerously as his fingers tightened together. Eva flinched when she realized she hit a nerve.
"You have NO IDEA about the things I've done," his deep drawl sent chills down her spine. "And my family is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS."
And that is how it remained: an unspoken threat in her ears. When he leaned back in his chair to continue eating, Eva peered at her plate: it was half-eaten, and she had room for more, but it wasn't appetizing anymore. Her stomach turned to lead, the heaviness of the evening weighing her down. She placed her utensils down and stood.
"Just remember this," she did her best to hide the quiver in her tone. "You took me from my loved ones...and I'll forever hate you for that."
She then exited the dining hall without so much as a backward glance, passing an unsuspecting Theone, who was slinked against the wall with a pitiful look. After she disappeared, the assistant followed her gaze until she slipped into the darkness.
~~~
A soft knock caused Eva to wake up.
"Evthys?" It was Theone. "May I come in?"
"If you must!" Eva groaned, rubbing her tired eyes. The door clicked open, and a pleasant-looking assistant came in holding a cage.
"Theone, it's late. What does Amen want now?"
"Oh, I'm not here on his orders," Theone shook her head. "I'm here with your friend."
Friend? Eva sat up as she watched her kneel to the floor, unlocking the cage. Sure enough, Omphis, Afiri, or Polyb come walking out. Eva's eyes widened as they jump or fly on the bed, right into her arms. Theone smiles as she watches her hug them for a long time.
"How did you get them here?" Eva asked.
"I know the guard to the animal house," Theone smiles. "He's never awake. And I knew you had a pet, so it was easy to sneak them out."
Eva is shocked that her animal companion is in the same room as her, unharmed and happily cuddling against her. She has to watch out for Polyb's talons, who flies right to the window for a comfortable perch. As soon as her pet is sound asleep, she turns to Theone.
"Thank you," her appreciation was apparent. "But I need someone to watch them. I know you're busy, Theone, but..."
"Say no more, Evthys," she vowed. "I'd be more than willing."
Theone strokes their head/wings, commenting on their beauty. They warm up to her immediately. Theone wishes her a good night as she leaves to her own house. Eva looks at her pet, suddenly feeling less wary and scared. Perhaps she could make this transition work, even if she was out of reach with her friends.
~~~
As Theone exited the room, she turned the corner and jumped back when the supreme Epistates leaned against the wall, arms crossed and not looking too pleased with Eva's personal assistant. He had an inkling something was happening when Eva left her dinner plate only half eaten, and while he knew she didn't plan anything, he saw Theone heading in a direction where maids, or healing assistants, were not permitted.
From the shadows, like a cat, Theone carried a cage that contained Eva's beloved pet. He never gave her orders to retrieve them, so why she went behind his back, it must be due to their encounter in Thebes when she gave her that cloak. Theone didn't hand out clothing like that, so Eva must've helped her with a commission under his nose.
Those wretched girls. He already had trouble with Eva almost refusing to eat, and now Theone was retrieving things for her. He could go and separate them for another maid, but would that be a difference? Probably not, and Eva was already overwhelmed.
"Epistates," Theone bowed, regaining her grace. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Having fun sneaking behind my back, Theone?" Amen's tone was dangerous. "It looks like Evthys has you already under her thumb."
Theone's eyes widened. "I'm just making sure she's comfortable, sir. You assigned me to her, and I just remember my orders."
"How thoughtful," Amen's eyes scanned the hall. "You're done. Return to your home now."
Theone nodded and rushed passed him, only stopping dead when he called out to her.
"And Theone...next time, if you need something, don't commission a sheshmu."
Blood running cold, Theone gulped before disappearing.
Amen sighed as he slumped against the wall. He had a lot of work to do, and it began now.

Hello !
I know this may seem random, but I was wondering if you could tell us about your favorite Egyptian dishes ? It just sounds interesting to me and I love reading your posts about Egypt !
Have a nice day !
I hope this isn't a weird and/or annoying question
It definitely isn't! Y'know, Egyptian food gets a bad rap in the MENA world, but I've never found a problem with it.
My favourite Egyptian food would be mahshi! Mahshi means "stuffed/filling/etc" and is basically vine leaves stuffed with rice which have been cooked in sauce. You can also find them in Lebanon to my knowledge.
Tumblr media
I say vine leaves because that's what I usually get, but you can also get it in zucchini, cabbage leaves, etc....

I am always thinking about characters food preferences what do you think is vlr cast favourite foods (include that characters that can't eat. pretend they can)
sorry this took a bit! wanted to do some research to get the best possible answers bc i simply can not do off the top of my head assignments, i must be correct!!! oh also i decided to go with meals even though you said food? idk it is what my brain demanded Akane - This may be an utterly freak answer but like. Gaspacho. Cold tomato soup dish idk i think she likes tomato soup a lot. The vibes. It being served cold is a nice touch, and they have tomato on the moon. Certainly not a fave from her childhood i think but became one late into life Alice - I'm not too awfully confident, but I think she'd like green pepper mahshi. Though she wouldn't have likely actually eaten it before moving to the states, I think it was made very often at home and the smell alone is a comfort. With, afaik, the ingredients all being easy to find in the US, I'm sure she had it plenty in her childhood, and it takes her back to comforting times with her father. Clover - I’m starting to regret saying meals bc. look at her. How can I answer anything but nutella crepe with strawberries. The answer is nutella crepe with strawberries Dio - Microwaved can of ravioli but left out until it's room temperature. It is the favorite food of everyone clone and i think they eat it in troughs Ellen - Human flesh. GOLM - BEANS ON TOAST INNIT? Kyle - I think out of spite it would became the same as Akane’s. Sigma does not like it at all so Kyle is making it his mission to enjoy it even though he. Doesn’t lmao. THIS WASNT MEANT TO BE SAD IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY BUT ITS KINDA FUCKED UP SORRY. I think he’d honestly like a hot tomato soup but he has to stick it to Sigma. Lagomorph - Carrots but only the orange part, which is not accurate to how rabbits actually eat, but Lagomorph does on purpose to piss you off. Lord Hoppington - Only the most distinguished of flies Luna - She would adore an ethically sourced chicken salad. Nothing fancy at all, she likes plain simple food and this certainly fits the profile. Phi - Inscrutable fucking vibes. Just something absolutely bizarre I think. Like I think it’s normal but then an addition that is the worst. Twice cooked pork but topped with broken up ketchup potato chips. sorry if this is slander i only seek the truth none of this is personal Sigma - Something he could make fast and easy to do while working. Whether it’s his college studies or his preparing to kill 9 people. Honestly maybe still fucking instant ramen. Oh also, a frog. Tenmyouji and Quark - I think both share a favorite, and it's the stews Tenmyouji makes. It's a staple of their household, something easy to make that doesn't take too many resources and warms them in the winters. It's so incredibly comforting to the both of them. It of course wasn't always Tenmyouji's favorite, but it became a necessity early into the apocalypse. And once he saw Quark's love for it, he couldn't not love it himself.
