[ Life reconstruction of a small herd of Maiasaura by Shutterstock user Catmando. ]
"Possibly the best growth series of dinosaur bones in the world comes from the fossil beds of the Two Medicine Formation in the U.S. state of Montana. Fossils from this formation have yielded much information about the eggs, hatchlings and early lives of a dinosaur named Maiasaura (meaning "good mother reptile"). This herbivorous hadrosaur apparently tended her eggs and raised her offspring for more than a year after hatching. Young Maiasaura grew astonishingly fast, reaching 200–400 kilograms by their second year, and more than 3,000kg by their teens. In comparison, cold-blooded saltwater crocodiles today weigh only about 6kg at the age of two, and reach adulthood at between 10 and 16 years old, when females weigh about 34kg and males about 115kg. Such high growth rates in Maiasaura involved rapid lengthening and thickening of their long bones, and the process doubtlessly required much oxygen and nutrients from the blood. The shafts of long bones of the leg, such as the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone), are supplied with blood by the principal nutrient artery, which enters the bone through a hole (called a foramen) that is visible on the surface."

Maiasaura
Tumblr media
Maiasaura is a large hadrosaur known from huge bone beds containing as many as 200 individuals, allowing paleontologists to understand how it lived and grew. Maiasaura lived in large herds and raised their young in nesting colonies, with each nest containing 30 to 40 eggs. Upon hatching, baby Maiasaura legs were not developed, and adults brought food to the nest to feed them. When the young left the nest, they walked mainly bipedally, switching to a quadrupedal stance as they grew larger. Adult Maiasaura grew to about 9 m in length with a body mass up to 4 t. They had a prominent short, solid crest-like structure between the eyes.

Good Mother
“A mother Maiasaura peeblesorum watches over her brood of hungry hatchlings.”
Probably the most wholesome paleo-sketch I’ve ever drawn so far. Maiasaura remains one of my absolute favorite hadrosaurs ever since I read about them when I was little. I look at the baby fossils and just melt imagining them in their nest, squeaking for food like modern day birds. The adults are also a delight to draw, with those squarish faces, the wide beaks and thick necks, very aesthetically pleasing profile. The ultimate Mesozoic cow to me!
This was my opening drawing for my new tan paper sketchbook. I think I prefer this over the grey toned one, feels warmer. I used Copic and W&N markers and ink pens, basically all the browns I have and a dash of pink.
