THE BIG MONKEY HAS LANDED With the Gigantopithecus fauna I finish no. 40 in our formation piece series. While being very challenging, this composition was a joy to figure out, and not just because of the animals. The verticality of these karst landscapes always fascinated me.

Besides the greatest of apes this fauna is filled with an enormous amount of mammals, not to dissimilar to La Brea in diversity maybe. But instead of tar we mostly have to thank rodents, specifically porcupines, for the preservation of these fossils. Their need for calcium makes them...

..hoard bones in their borrows and caves. If not eaten they have a good chance of fossilizing despite the warm and humid climate. As you can see this size chart by Discord member JW , only a fraction of this diversity made it in, but I tried to cover nearly every major clade.

One thing you will notice is the absence of birds. This is in part because of taphonomy, one part maybe because procupines don't like to chew on bird bones and another appears to be THAT THE BIRDS WE HAVE ARE NOT PUBLISHED ON YET, ARRRGHHH. (this is a call out post)

Gigantopithecus is an extinct species famous as the largest ape ever known. However, not that much is known about it, since it’s only known from jaw and tooth fossils, so its appearance is largely speculative. What is known is that it lived in Chinese tropical forests from 2 million to 300,000 years ago, and ate plants, fruits, seeds, and probably small animals. It is estimated to have weighed anywhere from 440-660lbs (200-300kg), potentially much larger than gorillas. However size estimates are difficult with so few remains, and given the size sexual dimorphism present in many modern apes, there was probably a variety of different sizes between individuals.

Bigfoot, Relic Hominid?

The story of Bigfoot has captivated the imaginations of people worldwide for countless years. Especially in the thick forests of North America, sightings and rumors about this elusive monster have survived for a long time. Some experts have proposed an intriguing concept, suggesting that Bigfoot could be a relic hominid species, a surviving member of an extinct lineage. While many people reject Bigfoot as nothing more than a legend or a product of hoaxes, their hypothesis is intriguing. Bigfoot is thought to be a relic hominid, which means that it could be a descendant of ancient hominids such as Gigantopithecus, which was an enormous ape that lived in Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. Experts estimate that Gigantopithecus could have reached a height of up to ten feet and weighed more than one thousand pounds. These are features that are consistent with numerous Bigfoot reports. It is a tantalizing idea to consider the prospect of such a species traveling across the Bering land bridge into North America and thriving in parts of the wilderness that are quite remote.

This theory proposes that the dense and vast forests of the Pacific Northwest provide a suitable habitat for a giant, elusive monkey to thrive undetected by humans. This could explain why they haven't found any compelling evidence, like a body or skeletal remains, supporting their hypothesis. Eyewitness stories, footprint casts, and audio recordings of unexplained vocalizations are some of the evidence that believers of the relic hominid hypothesis refer to in support of their position. Skeptics frequently contest or disprove these bits of evidence, yet they continue to pique people's curiosity and encourage further investigation. Some primatologists and cryptozoologists remain open-minded about the possibility of Bigfoot being an undiscovered ape species. They are urging the scientific community to refrain from completely dismissing these tales without first conducting comprehensive research. Critics, on the other hand, contend that the absence of tangible evidence constitutes a substantial obstacle to the acceptance of Bigfoot as a real and living species from the present day. They emphasize that in this era of technology, where cameras and recording devices are readily available, the absence of verifiable and clear proof is striking. Furthermore, the enormous amount of time that has passed since the reported demise of hominid ancestors such as Gigantopithecus raises issues about the possibility of surviving without leaving a more substantial mark in the fossil record.

Despite the skepticism that surrounds it, Bigfoot's allure as a relic hominid continues to exist. This is in part due to human curiosity about the unknown and our need to establish a connection with a prehistoric past. This concept challenges our understanding of human evolution and biodiversity, raising questions about other mysteries our planet might still be hiding. Cursed mythical creatures no.1: The Yeti

So you know how we used to reconstruct Gigantopithecus as an upright biped, which led to it being used as an explanation for the likes of the yeti and bigfoot. Nowadays, though, Gigantopithecus is reconstructed as basically an orange gorilla with the face of an orangutan. But that got me wondering...

What if the yeti actually was a gigantopithecus?

So here it is, my Yeti, in all its knuckle walking glory. I'm really proud of them, especially the male with his magnificent beard. My favourite thing about him is the falanges which form little horn like structures on top of his head, as a nod to several pop culture yeti interpretations.
