Opinion | After Navalny, What Next For Russia’s Opposition? By Boris Bondarev Alexei Navalny was undoubtedly the brightest star in the Russian opposition. However, for all his charisma and energy, he failed to unite the entire opposition (or at least the majority) under his banner. Nor did he strive to, often taking an extremely tough and uncompromising stance.  His associates in the Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF), who position themselves as the main opposition force, take the same approach. They have repeatedly shown their unwillingness to work with or even appear alongside other opposition movements, such as supporters of Maxim Katz, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, and other opposition figures and movements.  The views expressed in opinion pieces do not necessarily reflect the position of The Moscow Times. Kaiya was reluctant to visit the palace garden as the mysterious note instructed her. She hated surprises, but curiosity was eating away at her psyche. She furiously marched to the garden determined to resolve this issue and suddenly paused when she recognized the man waiting for her. It was Bondarev, patiently standing by the cherry blossom tree with a red rose in hand. The scattered sunlight illuminated his face as the wind rushed by, making cherry blossom petals dance around him. His eyes reflected stars at the sight of her. He smirked as one word flirtatiously escaped his lips: “Hey”

What is Bondarev (BSB ver) actually like in the novels? In my WIP, I’m trying to be as close to the lore as I can with certain parts, so it’s hard to write in a character that I have no clue what his personality actually is like. Also does he have a full name? Is Bondarev his first or last name? I noticed Herzog has a full name thanks to the Fandom wiki you and Hectab are working on :3
Ask and Ye shall receive. (very long post below with allllllllllll of the stuff you asked for.)
VERY HANDSOME
This was a man who was a sight to behold, handsome and straight, with iron gray hair neatly combed back and styled with hairspray, and a muscular body that was defined and supple. Many would describe him as sexy. The sentry had seen such handsome young officers in Moscow, but this one was too unbelievable. He was actually wearing only military shorts and sleeveless undershirt, sweating in the -10 degree wind. The man fished out a lighter from his shorts and lit it with aplomb, the sterling silver case etched with the words "70th anniversary of the October Revolution".
The sentry could not refuse this kindness and went over to light the cigarette.
"Here you go." The man tossed the lighter to the sentry, "In such a cold place, you need to use aviation kerosene with low freezing point, you should save that for the summer."
The sentry then realized that he still had the unlit lighter in his hand, the man's insight was actually keen to this point. Furthermore, people should be eager to find a warm place to rest at this moment. This also shows that he still has energy left for skiing in such extremely cold weather. The man took out a dark gray officer's uniform from his military duffel bag, and after a few moments, he finished putting it on and solemnly pinned a "Red Flag Medal" on his chest. A minute ago he was a skier, a minute later he had a frown of determination, a young man of power from Moscow.
"KGB Major Bondarev, I'm from Moscow." The man pulled out his papers, "Take me to Dr. Herzog and tell him that this is the moment of survival."
"Yes! Comrade Major!" The sentry saluted.
The man stated his identity in the simplest terms; he was an envoy from Moscow, a key member of the secret intelligence service. In the days of the Tsar, such a man was called a "minister".
********ICE PROOF*************
He pressed the detonator in his hand, after a short dull explosion, the marble base in the snow was blown up, Lenin bronze statue slanted in the snow. The noise of this micro-acoustic thunderstorm was so small that it was muffled by the wind within a few steps. The Black Swan Harbor is notoriously heavily guarded, but the most important aspect is the extreme cold, and standing outside for ten minutes on a night like this can lead to severe frostbite. Because of the blizzard, visibility was less than five meters. The soldiers did not expect anyone else to dare to move outside, and they ignored the fact that Bondarev had an extraordinary tolerance for the cold.
-----
"I sometimes think that people who like to drink can't be bad. So I like you a lot, you know vodka." Dr. Herzog removed the Makolov pistol and handed over a cold glass.
A light struck down from above, enveloping the Doctor and Bondarev. The glass reflected the light, as clear as the most expensive crystal glassware, but it was carved from a whole block of solid ice, pure ice, without any air bubbles, with cornflower patterns carved on the outer wall. The two men gently clinked their glasses and drank the wine in one gulp.
Bondarev played with the ice carved glass: "It's wonderful, the spirits wrapped in ice, as moving as a stunning young woman under the appearance of an iceberg. I think my hands will freeze and to it."
"Usually people who drink from such an ice glass have to wear leather gloves, and only people like you, Major, who are not afraid of the cold can hold it in their hands. It is carved from old ice in the -30 degree strata and also kept at -30 degrees, making it the coldest drinking vessel for the warmest of wines." The doctor said, He said so, but he was also holding the glass with his empty hand, his slender hand was stable and did not tremble at all because of the low temperature.
****** SUPPOSED ROYAL FAMILY and EXTREMELY RICH ***************
"Bondarev, a KGB major, from Moscow, these are the truth. I only concealed from you the name of my great-grandmother, her name was Nastasya Nikolaevna Romanova." Bondarev slowly pronounced this long, awkward name, like a magician reciting a forbidden spell.
The doctor was stunned: "Was it the last royal daughter of the Romanov dynasty?"
Nastasia was the last princess of the Romanov dynasty, the last dynasty to rule Russia until it was overthrown by the October Revolution in 1917. in 1918, the last Tsar Nicholas II and his entire family were secretly executed by the Red Army. Nastasia was the youngest daughter of Nicholas II, and although she was young, she was given the title of "Grand Duchess", which made her more honored than other royal princesses in Europe at the time, and princesses were required to curtsy and address her as "Your Imperial Highness" during their audiences. It was rumored that she was the only one who escaped execution, and that her name Nastasia meant "resurrection".
"Since there is still me, the grandson of the emperor, I can't say that she is the 'last' royal daughter." Bondarev smiled.
"How do you prove yourself?" The Doctor asked.
"I saw Rasputin's signature at the end of the tunnel, and that heretic who had been canonized had been here before, so I should say he was the one who found this cave, right?"
"Yes." The Doctor said, "This cave is his legacy."
"Then you must know that Rasputin was a guest of the Tsar and a close friend of Princess Nastasia. The fact that I could find this place means that I have Rasputin's secrets, secrets that he told my great-grandmother. This is the proof of my status as the last royal grandson of the Romanov dynasty." Bondarev held his head up proudly.
"So, what were the secrets that Rasputin revealed to Her Imperial Highness?"
Bondarev smiled slyly: "I think there are certain things I know that you do not know, and of course there are things you know that I do not, so we might as well exchange information about each other. Then we might be able to sit down and talk about cooperation."
"After you." The Doctor raised his muzzle.
"This matter begins with my great-grandmother's escape. A Red Army bullet did go through her heart and her body was thrown into an abandoned mine, but three days later she awoke and the wound miraculously healed. It was then that she remembered what Rasputin had told her, that Rasputin said he was willing to share the secrets of the world with his great-grandmother because she, like himself, was God's chosen one. Like Rasputin, she had an unparalleled power of life and could even return from hell. She later married a Red Army officer, and in those days the only way she could gain refuge was to marry a Red Army officer. My great-grandfather, who later stepped into the high ranks of the military, was a very good man and always protected my great-grandmother from revealing her identity. Great-grandmother would sometimes wake up in a dream and shout, 'The Red Army is coming with guns,' and great-grandfather would reassure her, 'I am the Red Army, and as long as I live, the Red Army guns will only protect you.'"
"Touching love." The doctor said faintly.
"Great-grandmother decided to give up her past identity, so she rarely talked about the past of the Romanov dynasty, with the exception of one thing. She bade her great-grandfather that there were relics of God in the north of Siberia, which the saint Rasputin had told her about. That saint found the cave where God created life on the shore of the icy sea. But he did not announce it to the world, but sealed the miracle with iron water, because the miracle had degenerated into the cradle of the devil, and inside it were hidden fallen angels. Generations of our family descendants have to be on guard against the reopening of that cave, and the day it reopens, the end comes with it."
"So you are here to check if we are guarding the miracle properly?"
"No, no, my great-grandmother was a good and devout Orthodox Christian, but I am not. I have a great curiosity about everything, and after I inherited the secret, I am bent on finding the miracle. If I were to find it, I would definitely open it and take a look. Not long ago I found an engineering map from the ruined archives." Bondarev drew out the map roll and rolled it along the ice toward the Doctor, "It marks the elevator that leads deep into the tundra."
The Doctor scanned the map, "It's not the original map, someone drew it from memory."
"It was drawn by a madman who used to be the engineer battalion commander of the 13th Konrad Infantry Division and was ordered to participate in the excavation of the tunnel, after which he was brainwashed by drugs and became a regular in a mental hospital. All he remembered was that he was engaged in a big project on the northern coast of Siberia, and the project was to dig a cave. Suddenly I realized I had found a breakthrough. But as the investigation progressed, I found that the matter was becoming more and more mysterious. Many years ago, the army had built a port in the almost unnavigable northern part of Siberia, about which there was no information, and even the coordinates had been erased. Below that port, sappers had dug through the hard permafrost and opened a long-closed cave. So I decided to come and see for myself. As a KGB officer, I easily applied for a charter to investigate this mysterious port, so that I could drive in as the 'Minister of the Admiralty'. Sure enough, I found Rasputin's signature at the end of the passage, and I finally arrived at the place I had dreamed of since childhood." Bondarev looked around, "But it doesn't look like there's anything interesting here."
"I'm sure you noticed when you came here that the closer you got to the door where Rasputin signed, the more bones there were in the tundra, and they all crawled out through a gap in the rock wall. It was those things that Rasputin was talking about when he said this cave would breed demons. But now the cave is dead, and the mysterious forces in the cave have dissipated."
"I don't think so. If this cave was no longer valuable, you would have left long ago."
"If this cave was really valuable, I should have shot you and monopolized the secrets of this place."
"Wait a minute! I have brought you a gift! Won't you take a look at the gift before shooting?'' Bondarev took an envelope from inside his clothes and slid it along the ice toward the Doctor, by which he showed that he had absolutely no intention of resisting.
The doctor tore open the envelope, inside was a Swiss bank cashier's check - a cashier's check for $200 million.
"This is a rare and large check, what do you want to buy from me with this check?" 'Doc asked.
"Not a purchase, just a gift." Bondarev smiled, "We believe this gift will be useful to you. Your research has been going on for decades, consuming huge amounts of state funds every year, and it must not be finished yet, right? But now that the Soviet Union is about to split, your backers have fallen, which means you no longer have access to funding to complete your research, and no one to help you keep it secret."
"It does sound like I'm facing a lot of trouble." The doctor said.
"Then why not work with my family? We know politics, we know technology, and we know war, and we're willing to invest in this cave as long as its secrets pay off. We can continue to support you in this project and share with you all the benefits it brings. I have already shown my sincerity and told you everything I know. Shouldn't you also tell me what I don't know? After that you will still have time to shoot me."
"You are very calm, Comrade Major. You think I won't shoot you if you produce this $200 million cashier's check, don't you?" There was a hint of sarcasm in the Doctor's tone.
"There are not many people in the world who can refuse two hundred million dollars." Bondarev smiled, "And killing me wasn't the best option. If I do not return safely to Moscow, the family will know that something has happened to me, and they will not spare you. At that time the secret of Black Swan Harbor will be made known to the world."
"Ten times." The doctor threw the cashier's check back to Bondarev.
Bondarev froze: "What did you say?"
"Your family needs to increase the bid tenfold. I need three years and two billion dollars to complete this research. At that time we will share the whole world."
"That amount is beyond my expectations and not easy to raise even for my family."
The Doctor laughed coldly: "It seems you really don't know the secret of this cave, in front of which two billion dollars is too small a figure, what is here no one can afford, it is priceless! Your family should be proud to offer this two billion dollars."
"Everything has a price, weapons, women, secrets, even souls." Bondarev said.
"But who can put a price on God?" The Doctor asked.
-------
The Lenin's mooring is only 40 kilometers from Black Swan Harbor, and they will be here soon. This new flare is so great that American spy satellites will recognize it as an aurora borealis." Bondarev said.
"You had said that the Lenin would not come." The doctor said.
"Moscow is not prepared to send the Lenin to Black Swan Harbo, but we can, and now the Lenin is at my family's beck and call."
Black shadows rose above the sea level, the roar of a giant bee on its wings approaching at high speed, snow dust twisted into a tornado by the helicopter's rotors, red five stars flashing in the white tornado. It was the "MiG 26" heavy helicopter, codenamed "Halo", one of the pride of the Soviet military industry. The helicopter hovered over the cast iron dock, the searchlights broke through the haze of the night, the hatch opened, and five captains lined up, saluting Bondarev. The communication lights below the belly of the plane blinked up, signaling greetings to Bondarev in Morse code.
"Glad to see you're safe and sound, Your Imperial Highness!" The doctor read out the greeting.
The fact that they called Bondarev "His Imperial Highness" instead of "comrade" meant that the helicopter and the Lenin on the icy sea were no longer loyal to the Soviet Union, but to the heir to the Romanov dynasty. The name Romanov is about to shine again after almost a century of obliteration in history, and with the power of the Dragons, it is not impossible for them to re-establish hegemony on Earth.
Bondarev handed a letter to the Doctor: "This is a letter I wrote to the family, please read it."
The Doctor scanned it and handed the letter back to Bondarev.
"If things go well, we will be able to relocate within a few weeks." Bondarev handed the letter to a captain who descended down the zip line, "We will build you a brand new research base in the warm and pleasant Baltic Sea, along with a vacation villa."
The captain placed a mouthful of boxes at the doctor's feet, containing a case of aged Red Label vodka.
"A small gift, so you don't have to worry about running out of booze until we leave Black Swan Harbor." Bondarev said.
"I guess I picked the right partner." The Doctor smiled.
***** HE VERY STRONG AND CAPABLE ***********
Bondarev looked alert, his muscles bulging under his uniform. He was a highly trained soldier, capable of breaking a wolf's neck with his bare hands, and had no need to fear this delicate boy, but not daring to take it lightly in the presence of something supernatural, he adjusted himself to a state of immediate danger.
------
Bondarev noticed a transparent figure flashed from his side. It was just a short blink of an eye, a fraction of a second, but Bondarev was trained to the rigors of the KGB and he was absolutely certain it was a person!
-------- IS A HYBRID THAT HAS NO ISSUE KILLING PEOPLE, INCLUDING KIDS ------------
The lieutenant on duty in the boiler room collapsed on the duty desk, a bottle of Red Label vodka still in his hand. A steel-core bullet had penetrated his heart, and Bondarev stood behind the lieutenant with his Makolov pistol.
---
At that moment the doctor heard the wind change behind his head, and the beam of the searchlight struck him. He turned sharply and saw huge black shadows hovering in the air, their rotor blades churning the snow into a flurry. It was Halo, the heavy helicopter from the Lenin, which had ventured to Black Swan Harbor in such bad weather.
"Didn't you say Halo couldn't fly in a snowstorm of this magnitude?" The Doctor froze. Something hard pressed against his back, it was Bondarev's Makarov pistol. One by one, the steel-core bullets pierced the Doctor's chest, tearing the aging heart into a million pieces. The Doctor spat out a mouthful of blood, mixed with fragments of his lungs, which had been destroyed in the process. He braced himself and turned his face to look at Bondarev, his eyes filled with shock.
"You can't complete the research without me ......," he hissed.
"We didn't even try to finish your research." Bondarev's pupils swirled with a gorgeous gold.
"Who the hell ...... are you?"
Bondarev held the Doctor in place and injected him with adrenaline using an air needle, "Hold on one more minute for the most magnificent scene."
The Black Swan Harbor suddenly trembled up tremendously, the sound of a series of explosions spread upward from the ground, but it was not a vacuum bomb detonated in advance, if it was a vacuum bomb, a square kilometer around would be leveled to the ground. A fire rose, and countless pieces of frozen earth spilled onto the frozen sea.
"Engineering explosive mines?" The Doctor asked in a hiss.
"The new engineering burst mines, even 10,000 years of permafrost, as long as the right eye is chiseled can be blown up. Now in a place you can't see, there is a huge hole with a depth of 180 meters, leading to Rasputin's cave, where we will use the laser to cut through the ice and take away the precious collection that originally belonged to you." Bondarev said, "You have been isolated from the outside world for too long to know the progress of engineering, it is no longer difficult to cut through the tundra in an instant today, once I probe its location."
"You ...... want to take that dragon!" The Doctor understood.
"Yes," Bondarev replaced the magazine, walked over to the sled, and fired four bullets into the chests of each of the four children.
The children died without a struggle from the potent hypnotic drug. It was pure carnage.
"You are not the only one who is willing to sacrifice human lives for a great cause." Bondarev pressed his chest in silence for the children he had just killed, looking reverent.

what your favorite dragon raja ship says about you ! ( but theyre all my ships )
susie x nono : you are gay and so, so underappreciated. you’ve also read the manhua.
caesar x nono x luminous : you hate love triangles and also think that half the shipping issues in canon can be solved through polyamory. nono has two hands.
johann x luminous : you’ve read the second book of the manhua and or the novels. the scene where luminous sacrifices 1/4th of his life to help johann was pretty gay ngl and not to mention the premise of the fourth book.
johann x luminous x shavee : you’ve read the manhua and your favorite scene in book 2 was the funfair. you cried during the shavee death scene in the manhua and are upset that the game did her dirty like that.
johann x luminous x nono : you either think caesar sucks major ass, or you ship him with your mc. the fact that luminous sacrificed 1/4th of his life for both nono and johann is pretty telling and eyebrow raising.
mc x erii x luminous : you are bisexual. and think that tls couldve been better if mc had more input in the story. you cried at the ending of toyko love story.
mc x chime gen : you like mysterious white haired boys with tragic backstories.
mc x ruri kazama : you like to suffer, plain and simple. you want to dig herzog up and shoot him again.
mc x chisei gen : you like to suffer. you plan on killing bondarev.
chisei x sakura : you think there’s potential but with the questionable translation and writing of the game, you wish some of this stuff was more expanded upon.
mc x renata : the cliffside scenes really got to you. you probably want to throttle z with full force.

Someday I’ll See You Again
A Dragon Raja fan fiction by N.S.K.
Announcement: So I finally posted the first chapter (which sat in my queue forever), which I'm sorry to say it's just that part where Black Swan Bay is destroyed. Didn't mean to put y'all through that again but it's vital to the story. I am trying to be a little more accurate to the DR lore but some characters will be somewhat OOC and events modified to drive the plot in the direction I had originally planned back in 2020 (I know, it took me forever to finally figure out where I'm taking this story😂). Some aspects of this fan fiction will be based around both the novels and the game, but mostly the game. The quality of the writing will vary depending on my health and school work, but I will do the best I am capable of (even if the work isn’t technically my ‘best’, I’ll write what I can). Please enjoy and feel free to give me any feedback at any time <3
Chapter 1: Iced
Tumblr media
The silence of the cold Siberian air was cut with the crackle of gun fire and the shouts of soldiers. The snowy forest and orphanage were set ablaze while explosions boomed everywhere. Smoke filled the air as the screams of the orphans echoed through the night. They were the brothers and sisters of 18-year-old River. River frantically looked around, her breathing shallow and eyes wide with fear. Black Swan Bay, the only place she called home, was in peril and there wasn’t much she could do to save it. Her wavy black hair stuck to her cheeks and her tawny skin shined with sweat from the panic. Her lavender eyes searched amongst the chaos for her best friend, Renata, but instead spotted Vera, screaming for help.
The young girl, no older than 10 years old, ran towards River with an arm stretched out for her. Vera was instantly shot down by a soldier and dropped to the ground. The chocolate bar that River gifted to her earlier, flew out of her other hand. River gasped as her heart sank to her stomach and she felt her blood suddenly boil. An ancient power within her awakened. She let out an inhuman screech, emitting golden rays from her body as brown reptilian scales appeared on her arms and legs. River’s veins filled with rage, and she unleashed the power within them onto the soldiers who killed Vera.
No machine gun nor flamethrower could stop her. Zipping through the spaces between the soldiers, she took out a whole squad in a matter of seconds. Afterwards, her body returned to normal and she tried to catch her breath. River’s knees became wobbly and she wanted to collapse, but she had to continue her search for Renata. They’ve been through so much and they dreamed of traveling the world together. River momentarily closed her eyes and deeply inhaled. I need to find her, she thought to herself. She exhaled and ran off into the distance where more soldiers were trudging near the lighthouse on the cliff.
“The boss said to burn it all to the ground!” shouted one soldier in Russian. “Leave no witnesses.” River tried to hide amongst the bushes. Suddenly, she saw Renata fighting off swarms of soldiers. The thin and frail 14-year-old girl with large blue eyes, pale skin, and blonde hair, used her powers to push the soldiers back and tear them apart like paper. River calls out to her and jumps to her aid. Back-to-back, they fended off the soldiers together, trying their best to stay alive and protect their home. River was soon surrounded and a soldier shot her in the leg forcing her to kneel. Renata’s blood boiled and her eyes turned golden. With her powers she emitted a shockwave, wiping out a few of the soldiers and breaking apart their weapons.
Renata then telekinetically assembled a gatling gun from those pieces, and used it on the remaining soldiers. She kept on shooting but more squads just kept coming. In the distance, coming out from the shadows, a figure drew his gun. It was KGB officer, major Bondarev. His short golden hair glistened in the moonlight while the creases of his dark grey military uniform gently whirled in the snowy breeze. His turquoise eyes stared down the barrel of his handgun. Bondarev never misses his target, but this night, his streak ended.
Tumblr media
His line of sight was set on River. Her eyes met his and she froze with fear. Bondarev hesitated for a few seconds. Those eyes…, he thought to himself. Where has he seen those eyes before? He quickly snapped out of his thoughts, returning focus on his mission. His finger tugged on the trigger, firing a bullet straight at River. Renata, having caught glimpse of him, intercepted the bullet, taking it into her chest.
“Renata!” River cried out in anguish. Bondarev and the soldiers began to close in. To their surprise, Renata was still alive, crawling and reaching out for River. Her eyes watered as the friends sat over the cliff’s edge holding each other. With great sorrow she whispered to River.
“Live…” she said. “You have to live...” She suddenly pushed River off the cliff and fully collapsed, praying her friend survives. Bondarev approached Renata while she lied still in the snow; eyes devoid of the light they once had…She was gone.
Bondarev spoke into the radio with a deep voice. “It’s done. That’s the last of them.” He walked away, heading back to the ship.
Before falling into the sea below, River rested her hand on her chest and clenched her golden fox pendant. She swore to avenge Renata and the orphans of Black Swan Bay. She swore to put an end to that monster, Bondarev. Her body pierced the ocean surface. The icy water swallowed her into its depths, as the coldness shocked her body. She sank further and further as she spotted the giant silhouette of a winged creature, swooping from the sky above. River’s eyes became heavy and her breath escaped her in the form of bubbles that were desperate to rise to the surface. The darkness and silence of the ocean depths blinded her senses. She blacked out…….
The voice of a young girl faintly echoed. “Do you think she’ll be okay?” the girl asked.
“We’ll find out,” an elderly man replied. “We will run more tests once she wakes up.”

Tokyo Tower (Part 4) Herzog, Bondarev, MC
It took me a while to figure out what angle I was going to go with this. I hope you enjoy it!
In the Tokyo port area, not far from the coast, the sound of the midnight tide can be faintly heard. The iron tower stands in the rainstorm, a stark and bony giant, silently supporting the sky.
Tokyo Tower.
This tower was once the high point of Tokyo, but now it has been replaced by the taller Tokyo Sky Tree. But looking up from directly below, one can still be amazed at its majesty. The jagged steel supports are more like the skeleton of a giant than a living giant.
"Ukyo, Ukyo, Ruri calling, report your position." Ruri Kazama's voice came over your headset.
"Arriving at the first floor of the underground garage. It's a little strange how quiet it is." Chu Zihang replied.
"After the Tokyo Sky Tree was built, this place has been forgotten. Who would come to the former tallest tower when you can climb the actual tallest tower to see Tokyo?" Ruri Kazama said, "That's why the King will choose this place for the meet up.”
His voice grows faint. “In the past, it was a Tokyo landmark. It appeared in various manga and movies. Couples saw climbing Tokyo Tower together as a romantic affair, and those who fell out of love came here to commit suicide. This place symbolizes the prosperity and loneliness of Tokyo. In ‘Tokyo Babylon’, there is a dead soul wandering in Tokyo Tower, and she says, "I hate Tokyo, so gorgeous on the outside, but so dirty on the inside.’"
"You don't seem to like Tokyo that much, do you?" Caesar said.
"Not only do I dislike it, I actually want to burn the city down. It's a sad city, like a colorful cage."
Lu Mingfei, next to you, gives you a searching look. “You like this guy?” He whispered.
The two of you were in your sniping positions on a building far from the tower. Your job was not to snipe Masamune Tachibana or Dr. Herzog -- aka King General -- but to control the perimeter to avoid their escape. You’d prepared yourself with rain proof gear and warm underclothes. You’d even brought snacks and a small thermos of tea to drink while you waited. You lay on a small pad to comfort yourself against the hard asphalt roof. It was almost like a camping trip.
To answer Mingfei’s question, you answer the comms. “It’s funny you say that, Ruri. I imagined one morning tilting the whole city into the sea.” You giggle.
Mingfei’s face twisted in sheer disbelief.
"Sorry to disturb the lovebirds’ very romantic conversation, but I'm wet and cold here in the void and also lonely. That is, needless to say, you guys' warm and blossoming words are driving me nuts!" Fingel's indignant voice came out of the headset, "Will you please shut up?"
"From my point of view, you are completely invisible, hidden really well. What is your position?" Lu Mingfei asked.
"The northwest side of the tower, about 60 meters from the special lookout. Do you want me to say hello and yell at you a few times? That way you can remember that there is a poor man like me shivering in the wind and rain!" Fingel said viciously "I mean, is this balloon really reliable?"
"It's a dirigible." Lu Mingfei corrected.
He put down his sniper rifle and lifted his binoculars to look at the sky. Following Fingel's instructions, he did see the huge black object suspended in the rainstorm, like a giant whale suspended in the restless sea. It was so close to the color of the sky that it was almost indistinguishable. But poor Fingel was handing underneath it by a rope in the rain.
“That’s a really cool idea, Mingfei. How did you come up with it?” You ask.
“Oh… I got inspired one day.” He lowered the binoculars and looked down at you. “What do you have there?”
“Chocolate chip cookies. Do you want one?” You held up a cookie the size of your hand and Mingfei’s eyes brightened!
Fingel moaned loudly and you grin.
"We have reached the second floor of the underground garage. There’s a problem." Chu Zihang said, "The rainstorm has been going on too long. The area is flooded. The water depth is half a meter. Caesar and I had to wade deep into the garage to find the pipe opening."
You can hear them splashing around and, leaning close to Mingfei’s ear, you whisper. “I think I picked the right job.”
"Basara! Ukyou! Quiet! Unidentified vehicles are approaching Tokyo Tower!" Ruri Kazama's voice came over the headset.
You quickly grab a cookie in your mouth and munch on it while watching through your rifle scope.  A silver vintage Mercedes Benz drove through the rain-swept streets, kicking up a huge wake. It pulled into the basement level parking garage near where Caesar and Chu Zihang were. From there, there was an elevator that would take him directly up to the Tokyo Tower’s observation deck. Sure enough, a few seconds later, the high-speed elevator zoomed smoothly up the tower.
"It's Tachibana Masamune, who surprisingly arrived an hour early and drove himself here." Ruri Kazama whispered.
"He sounds like a very young man from the sound of his footsteps." Caesar said.
"To be sure, I can see him clearly from here. He has reached the main observation deck and is looking out the window. You are right, he is in a strange state tonight, like a young man. Like the Major Bondarev of old."
“Wow…” You breathe in amazement. “It’s really him.”
Even though he's far away and standing next to a window that’s running with rain, you recognize his upright and proud posture. You were an older orphan, a well trained soldier. He was always jolly and excited, with a disarming personality, a roguishly handsome face and well muscled body. Everyone was excited when Bondarev arrived.
Even now, you can hear Khorkina’s excited squealing echoing from the underworld. “It's Mr. Bondarev! He’s here!”
He always came with the Lenin. For you, he was like Santa Claus. But he was way hotter. Mr. Bondarev was like Santa the young women in the orphanage dreamed of marrying. Tonight, instead of a kimono, Bondarev wore the black trench coat of the Executive Board, with an open lapel revealing a white shirt with a colorful lining.
“Why are you smiling? This guy killed your friends!” Mingfei hissed.
“I know.” You whisper back. “But I haven’t seen this guy in forever and … this is amazing. He hasn’t changed at all.”
Bondarev fished out his cell phone and dialed. He started speaking in Japanese. “Mingfei, what is he saying?”
“He’s talking to Chisei. They’re talking about Erii. She’s okay.” Mingfei replies.
“That’s a relief. She was really sad but I comforted her. Don’t worry. She’ll wait for you.” You smile up at Mingfei but Mingfei doesn’t return it. You’re puzzled for a moment but then you shrug. “Don’t feel guilty about leaving her at the Hydras. You did the right thing. You’ll have another chance to go get her. Just don’t keep her waiting too long!”
The lights suddenly went out.
Tokyo tower suddenly turned into a lifeless ruin. Masamune's trench coat was shaking and snapping in a wind that blew in as emergency doors had opened on the observation deck. He showed no fear. His whole body looked like a taut longbow.
"Basara to Ruri! The power suddenly went out in the underground garage!" Caesar lowered his voice, "All the gates are closed!"
“Ruri here, not only is the power out at Tokyo Tower, but the surrounding blocks have gone dark, and the power supply to the entire district has been interrupted."
Ruri Kazama added, "But the lights of the stairs are on."
In the darkness, the iron staircase around Tokyo Tower was lit up. LED lights were installed underneath the staircase, and each step emitted a glowing white light, as if it were a path to heaven.
"After all these years, we're still in the habit of arriving early." A voice with a smile echoed around the tower. That voice came out of the Tokyo Tower's PA system, and there was no need for any listening device. Everyone could hear it clearly.
"That's the voice of The King General!" Lu Mingfei whispered.
“I know, stupid. I can hear it myself!” A jolt of shock echoed through your entire body. The voice reverberated like a bell, in a pure and recognizable Russian language with an accent native only to Northern Siberia. You hadn’t heard anyone speak your language for weeks and the familiarity by which your mind responded to the words sent sparks of pleasure through your mind.
It wasn’t just the voice of the King General. It was the voice of Dr. Herzog. The Herzog you grew up with, the one who raised you up. His voice echoed through the halls. It encouraged you. Praised you. Spoke your name. For you to hear it through the PA system on your naked ears, unfiltered by your headset… your heart responds as though he were speaking directly to you.
"Of course, it's always the first one to arrive who takes the first position. How can people like you and I allow each other to take the first position?" Bondarev looked around, "I'm late this time, what have you prepared waiting for me?"
“MC translation please…” Caesar grumbled.
“They’re not saying anything important.” You shake your head.
“Translation please….” Caesar’s voice echoed a bit warningly.
“Yes, sir.”
You speak in English for all to understand. "What else could it be? Of course it's authentic Red Label vodka and cold ice shipped from distant Siberia. Isn't that what friendship between men should be like? The liquor that burns the veins and the ice that never melts." Through the earpiece, you can hear the sound of vodka pouring straight from the bottle and the clinking of ice cubes. It was like he was sitting right next to you in the dark winter cabins of the north.
You can’t help yourself but smile. You knew this man. Were you not the only one frozen in the ice sea from twenty years ago? This is exactly a scene from your past being played out in real time!
"Why don't you walk faster? We have not seen each other for more than twenty years. You’ve gotten old. The world does not have much time for old people. We should seize every minute."
Your voice falls into the same tone and cadence of the King’s manner of speaking. You can’t see either of them now, but you can imagine him holding the glass up. He was probably going to toast to something. He always did.
"How can you not enjoy the overture before the official movement begins? Do you still listen to Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake'?" You are translating but it sparked a memory. “That’s right. Dr. Herzog loved Swan Lake. That’s why the port was called Black Swan Bay.”
"The favorite thing to listen to now is his Sixth Symphony, the swan song he wrote for himself." Your heart sinks when you hear this and translate. After you finish translating you say. “Herzog is dying.”
“How can you tell?” Caesar asked.
“Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony was the last one he ever wrote. After he performed it he died a few days later.” You answer.
“You seem to understand each other’s words very well. I wouldn’t have picked up on that…” Caesar commented.
You don’t answer him. The night before you had already discussed this with him. Even though you had learned a lot from Caesar and had adopted a few of his philosophies, you were still fundamentally the daughter that Herzog raised. It seemed like he still had a hard time accepting that.
"You look a bit ridiculous nowadays, Major Bondarev."
"You look a bit scary today, however, Dr. Herzog."
"Do you want to analyze the ingredients before you drink it?"
“You’re not going to poison me.”
 "Shouldn't we share a toast?"
You huffed. “I knew he was going to do that.’
"To what? To the once glorious Soviet Union?" You can scarcely hold your laughter. These guys were exactly as you remembered him. It was almost like a scene from a movie you’d watched dozens of times.
You sigh, once again falling into Herzog’s way of speaking, gesturing with the glass like he always did. "There is no need to raise a glass to it. It is dead. Let’s celebrate that we have all survived, that those who survive are the strong, and that the strong raise their glasses to each other."
Your hand pauses in the air with its invisible glass.
“Ah. So is that why we have a third glass here?” Bondarev said.
“You also have seen the girl?” Herzog said.
You’re so shocked that you forget to translate. You spin so fast, Lu Mingfei jumps out of his skin. You press your eye to the scope. But you can’t really see them any more.
Bondarev is speaking now. “Yes, I have to say, I struggled to keep my composure. Looking at her was like looking at a ghost. When did you see her?”
“I didn’t personally see her. It was reported back to me.” Herzog said.
Caesar’s voice. “MC!”
“Sorry!” You gasp. “They’re talking about me! They’re… they’re raising their glasses… to me. To the … only girl who made it out of Black Swan Bay to study.” Your voice fades and becomes choked with emotion. But not for your dead friends. You felt sad for the little girl you used to be who looked up to Herzog. Herzog was a loving and caring personality that little girl had wanted desperately to please. She had worked hard to the end for his smile of approval. But the whole time, he knew she was going to die.
Tonight, he was forced to give that smile of approval. Despite his plans, you did make it. You steel yourself again against the tragedy, not allowing yourself to cry or even feel sad for long. “Yeah. A toast to me, asshole, I’m going to shoot you in your head for my graduation party.” You snarl.
“I got worried there for a second.” Caesar said.
“I’m fine. They’re just sweeping the area for bugs now. But they won’t find any.”
Herzog and Bondarev each took off their outerwear and threw it on the ground, pulling up the sleeves of their shirts, moving neatly as if to admire themselves in the mirror.
"What is the meaning of this? Do old friends meet to strip naked and hug?" Fingel monitored every movement in the special observation deck.
"No, except for the outer clothing, their clothes are very close fitting, which means they can't hide bulky weapons under their clothes, such as guns. Rolling up their sleeves is a sign that they don't have throwing knives hidden on their wrists, which are no less deadly than bullets at that distance." Ruri Kazama said, "It's a way for spies to show the other side that they are 'clean'."
"What classic old spies!" Fingel exclaimed.
You chuckle. “Right out of James Bond. Oh, they’re talking now. I don’t quite understand what it means. Bondarev is asking Herzog if he wants to ascend to the throne of the world. And he says that Dragons can live over a thousand years and be reborn through… cocooning? What does it mean?”
Chu Zihang responded. “Dragon Kings, when they hatch, create an alchemical device called an ‘egg’. Through a special process, if they get mortally wounded, they can put themselves in this ‘egg’ device and regenerate. So long as they can make their egg, and protect it, they will never die.”
You nod. “It sounds like Herzog wants to evolve into a dragon. Turn into a dragon. He says that’s the only way he knows that he is really existing, is if he’s at the very top of the food chain. If nothing else can eat him then he is truly alive. The rest of the world is just food.”
A soft moan interrupts your listening and translation work. Lu Mingfei is wincing and sighing with his eyes tightly shut. His hand is against his forehead. “Mingfei! Are you alright?”
He doesn’t answer immediately. He doesn’t even seem to hear you at all. You shake his shoulders. “Mingfei! Are you using a Soul Skill? Is this sequelae?” You try to look into his eyes but they’re closed! “Mingfei!”
Mingfei’s whole body gave a tremendous shiver. Even though the rain was cold, he was sweating.
You kneel next to him. “It’s okay. I’m here. Are you sick?”
“MC, for the last time, I don’t need you to worry about Mingfei’s panic attacks, I need you to translate!”
“I’m … I’m sorry! Bondarev’s saying. ‘What makes a child whose life is as fragile as a broken candle catch your attention, Doctor?’”
“Herzog is saying that only one out of 100,000 humans exposed to dragon blood will survive. That he is 1 in 100,000. But also, Bondarev’s daughter is 1 in 100,000! He’s talking about Erii!”
"He says that the power of any evolutionary drug can only end up creating deadpool. The real evolution drug is an alchemical drug and the core ingredient is the blood of ancient dragons, especially the fetal blood of the White King. By obtaining that fetal blood, they have the opportunity to create the perfect evolutionary drug." Your voice rises in panic.
“They’re going to use it on Erii! They’re going to turn Erii into a dragon!”

Russia deploys strike bombers and ballistic missiles to Crimea
Russia has sent “squadrons” of  Tu-22M3 strike bombers and ballistic Iskander missiles to Crimea in response to the deployment of NATO’s anti-missile shield in Romania in 2015, according to the head of the Russian Federation Council’s Committee for Defense and Security, Viktor Bondarev.
“The deployment of American missile defense systems in Romania came as a major challenge, in response to which the Russian Defense Ministry made the decision to deploy long-range missile-carrying bombers Tupolev Tu-22M23 at the Gvardeyskoye airbase. This move has drastically changed the balance of forces in the region,” Viktor Bondarev said
Russia’s state-of-the-art missile systems, including S-300 and S-400, Buk-M2, Pantsir-S1 and two modifications of [nuclear capable] Iskander, have also been stationed at the peninsula, he added.
“This move has drastically changed the balance of forces in the region,” Bondarev noted.
While the bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons, it is unclear if those weapons would come with the bombers when they are sent to Crimea.
“If it were not for a prompt return of Crimea and Sevastopol within Russia, these territories would have gone under protectorate of the US. The American ‘parent country’ would have immediately deployed its weapons systems there. In case of a war, obstacles could have been put without hindrance for our ships, for example through mining the floor of the Bosporus,” the senator stressed.
Notably, the Crimean Peninsula was annexed from Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February–March 2014 and since then has been administered as two Russian federal subjects—the Republic of Crimea and the federal city of Sevastopol. The annexation followed a military intervention by Russia in Crimea that took place in the aftermath of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution and was part of wider unrest across southern and eastern Ukraine.
Washington views the missile shield, which U.S. and NATO officials switched on in May 2016, as vital to defending itself and Europe from so-called rogue states — especially Iran — a claim Moscow has disputed. Rather, the Kremlin has said, the move is actually aimed at blunting Russia’s own nuclear arsenal.
U.S. officials have said that despite Washington’s plans to continue to develop the capabilities of its system, the shield would not be used against any future Russian missile threat.

Spoiler for my fan fiction because I feel like it:
Some background: Tomoka is like an aunty version of uncle Iroh (from ATLA), and she is sort of a parental figure to both Kaiya and Bondarev at Hydra palace. Very grandmotherly.
Tomoka: Kaiya really seems to hate you. What happened between you two? *leans on table*
Bondarev: well I’m not a good guy, Tomoka. *picks up glass of vodka*
Tomoka: you don’t seem so bad to me
Bondarev: a lot has changed since you last saw me. I’m no longer that innocent child you knew…and there’s no going back
Tomoka: it’s never too late to change for the better! It will take some work but I believe you can, despite our *whispers* underground dealings
Bondarev: I don’t think I can. I enjoy being cruel *smirks as he swirls glass*
Tomoka: do you really? Or did you convince yourself that you do to cope with the demons of your past?
Bondarev: pfft! That has nothing to do with it! Everyone has their demons because the world is a dark place
Tomoka: yes…the world is a dark place, but you can either make it darker or you can be a light
Bondarev: *stops swirling glass and pauses. He sets the glass down on the table, hesitantly staring down in silence* …I’m going to bed *gets up and walks away*
Tomoka: I just want my two favorite people to get along! It wouldn’t kill you to befriend her! *folds apron and mumbles to self* why don’t children ever listen?
Bondarev: *calls from hallway* I’m not a child!
Tomoka: you act like one! *chuckles*

I might have to break down his fan fiction into ‘Acts’ because oh mah gawd it’s long as heck right now. Uesugi rescue arc:
Kaiya: we want to save the Uesugi siblings
Z: well I think it’s best to save them when they are able to fight for themselves
Kaiya: makes sense
Z: although, their trust in Herzog and his little identity crisis, is an issue, I think you may be able to persuade them to join your side
Bondarev: honestly I’d hate to run into Herzog again. He almost killed me. No wait…he did kill me!
Z: then you both will have to be sneaky about it

There’s a lot wrong with the scene I rewrote. The chapter is called, “The Night of the Assassination of the King.” Where Ruri plans to kill Herzog. But there are several problems.
#1: A lot of exposition, not a lot of character reaction, and a huge plot hole.
In this chapter, we finally understand what Herzog and Bondarev are up to. In this case, we can’t get around a lot of ‘telling not showing’ which isn’t that big of a problem. We get a major reveal about Lu Mingfei in this chapter, but the other characters don’t see it. The biggest plot hole in this scene is the fact that according to the novel itself, Herzog and Bondarev are speaking Japanese. Only Lu Mingfei and Ruri Kazama speak enough Japanese to follow the conversation, but no where in the chapter is there a reference to anyone translating. And yet Caesar is reacting to what he’s hearing! Caesar doesn’t speak ANY Japanese???
What the two men are discussing is left up to the audience to react to without context. Without bystander reaction, sometimes readers don’t know if ‘thing bad’ or ‘thing good’. Think of Pokemon where Brock is yelling. “Oh no! Charizard is charging up it’s main attack! If Ash doesn’t do something now, the whole stadium will be obliterated!” Without a character clearly outlining the stakes for the characters involved, you lose track of why you should care and you get bored.
#2 No one cares about the fight between Tachibana and Herzog
These are bad people we want to see go down. If they fight each other for the privilege of getting murdered by the heroes, it’s a bit... disconnected. Who cares if two jerks power up and go at it if they BOTH need to die. In the game, your character is supposed to choose who to support. One side wants to turn Erii into a dragon and take over the world. The other side wants to Turn Erii into a dragon and take over the world... just WHAT???
No wonder everyone is confused. It took me all day and nearly pulling out all my hair to make this chapter matter. It’s by far the hardest rewrite I’ve had to pull off.

The Wedding (End): Black Swan Bay Nightmare
We’re almost done with this. HOLY HECK. My brain is melting out my ears on how to finish this series in the most impactful way. MC gonna hit the end of this story like a METEOR. Just you wait!
@rurifangirl
You startle awake with a gasp. You’re lying in the snow. The breeze is frigid, but you’re well protected in layers of warm clothing and fur. You don’t remember falling asleep but you immediately know where you are.
Black Swan Bay, 1991, Christmas Eve.
Of all the orphans that day, you were the oldest and the number 3 ranking. You were tall, muscular, but your body was not womanly like Khorkina. Your hair was black as soot and your eyes were charcoal. You weren't a white icy queen, like Renata. So you had no one to dance with you at the party.
The blizzard that day was very intense. The wind howled around you like a screaming demon. But you stood tall against it, looking into the distance. Not a ray of light could be seen in the sky. The world was plunged into a thick darkness and the whirlwind swept the snow powder into a white dragon in the sky. Black Swan Harbor closed the main entrance. All the doors and windows were boarded up so that the snowstorm would not affect the atmosphere of the Christmas party.
You walk toward the recreation building, Golden Hall, where the party was being held. You’re not hampered by the snow or the wind. You were a hybrid and this great storm was only a mild inconvenience for you. You lift your head and look behind you. Your instincts were trained and always good. You could sense when you were being followed. You wait for several seconds, but nothing happens. You turn around and continue to walk.
You push open the door, and the warm air and music poured in, shards of gold leaf flew in the air, and the golden hall was brilliantly lit.
Soldiers played accordions and young girls sang and danced. Children gathered around the huge Christmas tree to make wishes and tiptoe to reach the gifts on it. The scent of beef soup, baked sweet cakes and the perfume of women filled the air. The appearance of the Doctor sparked a tidal wave of applause as the Doctor greeted everyone with his hands raised.
"My dear friends, today is Christmas and an important day for Black Swan Harbor. Our friend Major Bondarev from Moscow has confirmed to me that our research work has been highly commended by our superiors! Soon we will be able to go home in groups to visit our families. Everyone here will be rewarded, you will have military medals and be able to go to the Caspian Sea for vacations! You are a credit to your country! Let's sing and dance! On this wonderful night!"
You stand apart from it all. Your heart filled with a terrible rage and sadness. Liar. He’s a liar. He was lying this whole time.
The golden hall was getting more and more lively. The room was getting warmer. The young people were dancing the sailor dance. They got so hot that they took off their uniforms and threw them aside. The nurses took off their outer clothes, showing the white lace of their underwear under their undershirts.
They had all been drinking a lot, and their eyes were nakedly provocative. The smell of hormones overpowered the smell of perfume, stimulating everyone's body to redden. They danced and embraced. The soldiers put their hands in the undershirt of the nurses, they bit each other's lips like lovers and bloodthirsty beasts.
The children also stirred up, following the adults' example and hugging each other in a face-to-face dance. Anton and Khorkina are eighteen years old, Yakov is sixteen years old, and look very different from the thin and small Renata. The boys' upper lips had grown moustaches. While the girls' breasts had filled out and their waists swayed lightly as they walked.
You press yourself to the wall, but they still come at you, hands searching, not asking you to dance but chasing you! You cover yourself with your hands, swatting away their fingers, slapping their faces. Their faces are horrific and stretched into rictus grins. Their eyes are wide and blood shot.
You flee. You run into the night!
A loud bang! And you throw yourself to the ground. A ball of flames is rising from the laboratory building, red and gold, mixed with black smoke. Debris is thrown into the air, streaming fire behind them like fireworks.
Every single building went up in flames like this. But everyone was in the dance hall. Finally, the Dance hall itself went up.
“Renata! Renata!” You are running and the shadow is chasing you, faster and faster!  You skid to a halt.
Four children are on a dog sled. They’re trying to run. But Bondarev is approaching them. Bondarev pulls a gun. With expert precision, he puts a bullet into their hearts. One for each child. You fall to your knees and that’s what saves you. Visibility is down and you don’t move as he looks around. Next to his foot is a small piece of chocolate. Vera.
A hand takes yours. It’s Renata. You crawl away and she leads you back to another sled. This sled was pulling something large and very heavy. Along with your friend Z, who smiled at you sleepily. He wasn’t tall and proud. He was weak and couldn’t even walk. He looked at you directly and asked. “Who is that?”
Suddenly, everything stops. The wind, the snow, Renata, the explosion. Time completely stands still and you’re the only one moving.
“Who… is… that?” Z asks again.
This was a dream. You knew what was going to happen next. A big explosion, bigger than you’ve ever seen in your life even up until today, would turn all the Black Swan Bay into ashes. You and Renata would be shot from a helicopter. Renata would push you into the icy sea.
But despite your mind going through the beats, the image before you didn’t change. You follow Z’s gaze and you see a man in a tuxedo looking bewildered. “Ruri…?” You tilt your head. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
The dream ends. You open your eyes. It’s still dark, but the air is warm. Your chest and stomach hurt. You’re staring into the eyes of Ruri Kazama. Those swirling hypnotic mandarin shapes were the last thing you saw when you went to sleep. “Where am I?”
Ruri Kazama does not answer. “How did you break it?”
“Huh?”
“How did you break it?” Ruri’s voice was a low threatening growl. “No one has ever broken free from me.”
“Break… what?”
You’re surrounded by deep humid forest. The air was alive with insect sounds and sounds from croaking frogs, and night birds, nothing like the silent howling of the winds of Siberia. The sky was still dark and the wind still blew and the rain still fell. Ruri Kazama is staring at you.
His bone spines are still embedded in your body, pumping a steady supply of clean blood to keep you from turning into a deadpool and dying. You don’t remember when you fell asleep or how long you’d been out. “Where are we?” You ask again.
“Tama River area. It’s all woodlands here. Very isolated from Tokyo. I’m taking you to where God will awaken.” He finally speaks.
“Okay. What about Herzog?”
“He won’t touch you. He needs me. He will honor my request to have you there with me.”
You look down and see that you’re high in a tree, several yards off the ground. Ruri Kazama’s long white hair drapes like fine cloth behind him. Ruri Kazama has changed from his tuxedo to the great colorful kimono of the stage. You’re still in your wedding dress, but the skirt has been cut shorter so as not to be so unwieldy.
He crouches and then jumps, hovering over the canopy of green leaves. He jumps from tree to tree like someone dancing over stones to cross a river. He’s so graceful, his long hair sails behind him like a tropical bird. These mighty leaps were like the rocking of a rocking chai. Even though he would jump over twenty meters at a time, he landed with silent grace. You found it soothing.
Once Ruri Kazama killed Herzog - again - you wondered what he would do after that. What was his end game? Even though he was lovely as a human, it turned out that he had the same philosophy as Herzog. The winners devour the losers without mercy. You didn’t think there was any real limit to his killing. Even though he said he would go back and become a performer of Kabuki, it was far more likely that he would go back and kill his brother and every Hydra member. Cassell would send their members after him and he would kill them all too… or die.
Who would he not kill? Who would not hunt him? Both of those lists seemed to begin and end with your name. You were the last person in the world he wanted. You were the last one in the world he trusted.
All noise in the forest has fallen silent. Dawn is breaking but it’s still dark with clouds. There are no birds. The wind rattles the naked treetops. When you turn and look, everything is covered in a heavy layer of what looks like snow that has miraculously endured the heavy rain. On closer inspection, it looks more like spider silk. The blanket stretches as far as the eye can see. Under the blanket is a thick layer of dead leaves as though autumn came and the trees dropped all their leaves in a matter of hours.
“We’re here.”
“Everything… looks dead.” You say. “What’s are those white threads?”
Ruri is accustomed to explaining things to you now. “It’s a growth from God. It’s feeding on all the surrounding life. It detects a heartbeat and quickly cocoons it. We have to keep moving or we will be swallowed as well.”
You were on the edge of the silky, fungal growth. Looking further into the woods, you would see that the trees ahead have been completely encased like cocooning insects. Even the ground was covered. “How are we going to make it through all that?”
A loud thumping sounds overhead. Ruri stands up as a helicopter flies low. Lightning flashes and you see it clearly in relief against the sky.
“Hold on.”
He unsheathes his sword and the power from it lifts him in the air with an extra burst of height and speed. The ground races away from you and the black helicopter rushes towards you. The open cockpit comes into view and he lands cleanly without a sound. A seat was open so he sat himself down as though he were a simple passenger.
"No. That's something like spider silk!" The pilot said. He spoke in a quivering fearful voice, like he was seeing a ghost.  But the ghost was behind him. He was going to die. He didn’t deserve it. But you couldn’t stop Ruri.
Not yet.
You only watch as Viper Fang appears in his hand and pierces the copilot clean through the head, his blood filling his flight helmet.
"You…  who are you? How did you get up here?" The pilot turns in a panic and you see he’s wearing a Cassell College badge and what looks like a camera on his head. The black lens shimmers like an eye. It would see you, attached to Ruri Kazama.
Viper Fang moves so fast, the cherry-red blade seems to grow from his heart in a flash. You couldn’t speak out loud but you mouth the words as clearly as you can to the camera. “Caesar. Don’t worry about me. Thank you. Goodbye.”
A terrible sound resounded through the helicopter, the sound of a long sword being drawn from a heart, the blood spurting, sounding like wind.
You weren’t on the helicopter for long. It turned out you were less than one kilometer from the great hole in the ground that held the underground lake full of mercury. Without a care, Ruri Kazama leaped from the helicopter. You look up and watch it fly away to crash somewhere. The ground rushes towards you but Ruri uses Viper Fang against the ground, buffering your descent politely before landing. You wrap your arms around his neck and bury your face in his shoulder, using your hair as a veil to look through. All the members of the Devil Clan around you are shocked by your sudden appearance. Ruri Kazama stood still like a demon. His eyes glowing in the steady downpour, daring anyone to approach. But no one does. Quite the opposite. They are curious about you, but the killing aura is so strong they swallow that curiosity and decide that some answers aren’t worth dying over.
The well is many meters across and spanned by a large cross beam. Ruri walks over it and stands there, holding onto you.
White filaments crawl all over the inner walls of the water storage wells. They grow from the bottom, like the mycelium of some kind of mold. These mycelia can not only stain soil and trees, but can even penetrate steel. They can grow to several meters long, hanging on steel beams or trees, like countless slender hands swaying in the wind.
On the cross beam, Ruri seemed to fall asleep, his long hair drenched by the rain. There was nothing to do but wait. His eyes were open but empty. He was like one of the wooden doll children. He would move when instructed.  He didn't say anything and didn't listen. You immediately adopt that empty eyed posture. It is as familiar to you as a sort of meditation. The lightning flashes again and you see a smile on his pale empty eyed face.
The people working in the well were wearing protective clothing with extremely corrosion-resistant coatings to protect them from being stained by the white silk. The pumps are working at full capacity and twelve streams of blood red water are pouring into the deep well. This chemical reagent was mixed with the serum extracted from the deadpool fetuses.
The bones of dragon-like and snake-like corpses were soaked in the mercury tainted well, and the bottom of the well was still filled with the deadly mercury vapor, so the Hydra members did not have time to explore the well thoroughly. The Iwarui Institute concluded that there was no longer any living thing in the well, but right after they left, a large number of bubbles were rising from the bottom of the water, as if something was spitting bubbles at the bottom of the well.
Humans always repeatedly make this kind of mistake. They never really understand the dragons, always imagining them as creatures similar to themselves.
White bubbles piled up on the surface of the water like foam. The heavy smell of blood filled the deep well and the water temperature gradually increased to near boiling. Millions of dead lung snails floated up with the bubbles. Their stench from being cooked alive and the smell of blood became a putrid aroma, enough to make an ordinary person gag. The pool of boiling water was like a soup pot full of flies.
The King General Herzog strolls along the beam after Ruri Kazama and praises him in a poet-like tone: "Smell it? This birthing smell! This is the smell of life being born! That great life is waking up! This day Satan returns from hell to earth, and it will cleanse this rotten and bony world with fire, and a new world will be reborn by fire."
He stopped. Ruri stared at him with a clear threat.
“Oh come now, won’t you let me see her? It’s been so long!” He pleads.
After a moment’s consideration, Ruri pulled back the veil of your hair. You were staring at Herzog with your tongue out and your eyes crossed.
Dr. Herzog leaned back and clutched his stomach in roaring laughter. He staggered and slapped his knee, whooping and hollering like a mad man. “It’s been so long, MC. You haven’t changed one bit! Hahaha! Hahahahahaha!” He lifts his mask slightly to wipe away a tear. “Never one to take anything too seriously.”
Ruri Kazama did not answer. He just smiled grimly, as if he was incomparably joyful.
“The god has awakened. Now please lend it your precious blood for a moment and pay homage to the newborn god." The king general patted Ruri Kazama's shoulder while still chuckling at you.
And just like that, you were accepted onto what you were sure would end up a killing field like Black Swan Bay. Herzog will not let anyone leave this place alive. You were sure of it. But you play along and smile. Just like in Black Swan Bay, he will hype everyone up that they’ll be able to go home. Everything will be amazing. And then...
Boom.
Ruri Kazama drew his long knife and slit his wrist, pouring his blood into the deep well. It was only a few hundred milliliters of blood, and there should be no trace at all after being diluted by the large amount of water in the well, but at the precise moment those blood beads touched the surface of the water, the whole red well shook, as if something huge was stretching its body in the depths of the mercury.
"Sonar detects large object coming up to the surface!" The engineers working at the bottom of the well stepped back in fear, leaning their backs against the well wall.
The King let out a large dramatic shout.   "Let's welcome the return of God!''
