With her milestone 50th birthday just one week away, Mindy (Teri Hatcher) realizes she’s in the throes of a bonafide mid-life crisis. When her daughter Rita (June Laporte) comes home to their lake house for a long weekend with her girlfriend Emily (Matreya Scarrwener) and Emily’s uncle Sam (James Tupper) life throws her another curveball – Sam is Mindy’s former high school sweetheart she hasn’t spoken to in more than three decades. The weekend takes another unexpected turn when Rita confides in Mindy that she plans to surprise Emily with a proposal and wants her dad – Mindy’s ex-husband Marc (Brian Markinson) – to join them. Between two exes under one roof vying for Mindy’s affection and trying to talk Rita out of the big 50th birthday party she’s planning, Mindy has a lot to navigate. As the weekend progresses, an assertiveness inside her awakens and Mindy finds herself not only embracing her life, but discovering what it is she truly wants as she gets ready to start the next chapter.

About the film

Tackling the current uncertainty of the world, our story follows high schoolers weighed down by the fear of the future losing themselves in a whirlpool of a graduation party to ignore their anxieties… also the world is ending.

Acting as a metaphor for how when a chapter in life ends it can feel like your entire world is ending; we are passionate about telling this universally relatable story and now, given the state of things, it’s more topical than ever. 

We are excited to be working with exclusively Vancouver talent to both score the film and populate our cast and crew, building the strongest family possible to bring our story to life.

Introducing our team

Produced by and starring Alisha Newton, who’s been appearing in film & television for over a decade, and been seen in over 100 hours in prime time television; known predominantly for her lead role in Heartland, is stepping into the producer role for the first time in this spotlight vehicle.

Guilherme Almeida, a brazilian-portuguese producer, who’s been involved in indie productions from short films to music videos, for the last five years, studied filmmaking in Vancouver, and has been eager to produce a coming of age story for some time. This is a big passionate project for Guil.

Geordie Joseph is our writer/director, coming from writing and directing theatre productions on the east coast of Canada; has been writing/directing film projects in Vancouver for the last five years. Drawn to projects that reflect worldly themes and existential characters, Geordie’s excited to tell this story about the ambiguity of the future.

The rest of the cast include

Dempsey Bryk, known for his lead role in The Birch, and other projects such as the netflix movie The Silence and the hit show Black Mirror.

Ali Skovbye, best known for her role in Breakthrough, and her lead role in the upcoming Netflix series Firefly Lane.

Matreya Scarrwener, best known for her supporting role in the Johnny Depp film The Professor, as well as Imaginary Mary and Ties the Bind.

Kai Bradbury, best known for his role in Motherland, Fort Salem and Warigami.

Havana Guppy, best known for her lead role in the Hulu series Shut Eye, and various films such as Haters Back Off!

Jenna Berman, known for her roles on the hit shows, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The 100, and Halo 4:Forward Unto Dawn.

Our vision

The film will be visually and audibly stimulating; electric, from start to finish. We are in the perspective of our protagonist Mia, the overwhelmed, pinball wizarding headspace of a existential young woman, under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The film is a ride, and we don’t let the audience off from her leaving to the party until Mia’s final moment of calm peace of mind and understanding.

STUDIO CITY, CA – March 28, 2023 – Erin Krakow (“When Calls the Heart,” “It Was Always You”), and Brendan Penny (“In Merry Measure,” “Chesapeake Shores”), star in “The Wedding Cottage,” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, April 15 (8 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel as part of the network’s annual Spring into Love programming event.

To launch Vanessa Doyle’s (Krakow) new book – Tying the Knot – A Wedding Guide – she holds a contest offering one lucky couple an all-expense paid wedding. The winning couple needs to get married quickly, as the groom (Drew Henderson, “Candid About Love”) is being deployed and the bride (Matreya Scarrwener, “Mid-Love Crisis”) finishes grad school in just a few weeks. The couple chose The Wedding Cottage for their nuptials but unbeknownst to Vanessa, it’s been closed for years and is in disrepair. Evan Sutherland (Penny), an artist who inherited the cottage from his grandmother, has been using it as his temporary residence while he waits for inspiration for his next masterpiece. He has no intention of reopening, but Vanessa wants her clients to have their dream wedding and is determined to restore the cottage. With only five weeks before the big day, Vanessa uses all her charm to convince Evan to reopen and build relationships with the residents of Stony Brook to create a magical wedding for the bride and groom. As Vanessa and Evan grow closer, it becomes clear how much The Wedding Cottage has meant to the town and how much more it now means to both of them.
