The shout-out choice was inspired by the Oxford English Dictionary‘s Word of the Day: maunga, which is, “In Māori contexts: a mountain, esp. viewed as a site of cultural and spiritual significance.”

The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024 - Taranaki Maunga
A 2,518 metres (8,261 ft) tall stratovolcano, ideally positioned to catch every change in the weather coming off the Tasman. As a result it gets up to 11 meters of rain a year, and the winds between the peak and the remains of its predecessor can exceed 130kph.
Naturally, of great importance to the local iwi, and it certainly made an impression of the Europeans too - although a lot of early paintings exaggerate the height.
watercolour by Charles Heaphy, some time between 1839 and 1849.
They named it Mt Egmont, although happily the original name is back to being the official one.
The volcano erupts, on average, every 90 years, with major eruptions every 500. Of considerably more concern are the repeated catastrophic cone collapses that turn most of the volcano into gigantic landslides sweeping fridge-sized boulders and smaller debris dozens of kilometers away from the volcano, and well past the current coastline.
Anyway, while we wait for it to go bang again, visitors can enjoy the fascinating change in vegetation as you go up the mountain. As you get higher and higher, the coastal vegetation is replaced by the goblin forests, contorted mossy woods dominated by Kamahi (Weinmannia racemosa), that developed after eruptions destroyed the preexisting podocarp and Nothofagus forest, and as you go higher the trees are replaced by tussock grasses and later alpine plants.
There are still kiwi in the national park, which is one reason dogs are strictly banned. The introduced stoats continue to be a problem - we saw one on one of the tracks.
There was also this building, a corrugated iron structure noteworthy for being the oldest such building left anywhere in the world. It was originally a fort, and still has gun slits. The windows are new.
Most of the species I saw around the visitors center are were new to me - I could have spent a week just phtographing the incredible lichens in the goblin forest. Here's some that weren't new.
Taranaki Anniversary Day is a provincial holiday observed in New Zealand and if you’re lucky to live in this beautiful region, you’re getting a day off work! Super sunny today so what more could you want 🙂
This day commemorates the creation of the Taranaki province. Originally called New Plymouth province, it was renamed to Taranaki in 1859 after the tribal group to the west of Mount Egmont…

Maunga is a Ground Type based on a mountain. Maunga (the au makes an oh sound) is the Māori word for mountains, which are very important in Māori history and mythology, where they are often anthropomorphized. Maunga isn't based on any particular mountain. My friends all said that his feet look like cleavage and said I needed to make it more obvious they are feet. I said if he bounces around on his huge naturals that's his business.
Find the rest of the Te'Roa set in my master post!
I watched this mural being executed (it’s right by my downtown bus terminus) and never tire of looking at it. The artist works across Māori and European artistic traditions, and he said that his starting points was a crossover in domestic decoration - the adoption by Māori of the settler habit of cultivating houseplants. He ties it to the Māori identification with place - in many respects, but especially with the soil, and with particular geographical features such as rivers and mountains. A person might allude to their maunga (mountain) for example, when listing their whakapapa or ancestry. In the mural the pots are depicted as full of soil, which at the rim forms the shapes of particular mountains or their names. I love the perspective jolt from domestic-scale pot to gigantic volcano; and the scale shifts play wonderfully with the way the mural works as public art, viewed from various distances. You can take it in whole, or spot fresh detail as you pass in a double-decker bus, or cross the street.
🍑 (x32) Wow, what an epic event! Thanks to @positivelybare for a tau kē out-of-body (or should that be out-of-clothing) diverse body positive experience. That’s me at the end, far right!
🍑
It was great to be amongst a whole lotta skin confident brave peeps willing to bare all at sunset despite the persistent buffeting cold wind through the shoot.
🍑
The energy, exactly like when I participated in the Spencer Tunick Bondi Beach shoot, was electric. When you’re finally given the go ahead to strip everyone knows it’s the point of no return. It’s all in! We’re all suddenly encountering each other on a level playing field and willing to share our raw vulnerability.
🍑
The laughter, cheering and joking spirit peeps brought along with the out loud shouts of encouraging words like “tropical! hot! warm! sunny! balmy!” really helped distract from our numb toes and fingers!
🍑
The moments between photos where we all scrambled back to our spots to dive back into our puffer jackets, sleeping bag or furry blankets for temporary warmth were gold. Then we did it all over again and again. No one looks glamorous barefooting it across uneven rocky outcrops but we didn’t care!
🍑
Big ups to all those that participated. Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei. Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain. This whakataukī is about aiming high for what is truly valuable, but its real message is to be persistent and to not let obstacles stop you from reaching your goal. Events like this and the good work that groups like @getnakedaustralia do help battle those negative voices inside and out that can make loving ourselves challenging. Well, that’s certainly the case for me! Ngā mihi Brendan, Lauren and Michael.
Takitahi, Toa of Fire - no, the Inika isn’t his actual mask, it’s a stand in until I’m able to get one that fits him better (probably going to go with an arthron or iden)
Rakau, Toa of Plantlife
Again, the gresh head is a placeholder, I’m going to replace it with a Mohtri
Maunga and Toka, Toa of Stone
I know its pretty basic, but I like how I was able to attach the Sanok to Maunga.
As opposed to the previous poster, i tried to use as much space as i could. While reading the maori proverb "whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei", there were some words i felt held so much value and should be arranged in a way that showed their value. "Seek" starts off the proverb therefore i emphasised its presence through colouring it a nice blue and included pupils in both the 'e's'. To enforce it further, i thought it an interesting idea to position eyes crafted out of eclipses around the poster. There was a part of the translation that caught my attention and it was "let it be a lofty mountain". Therefore i attempted to bring the mountain to life by drawing lines and then typing on those lines, placing the text in different angles of the mountain. I then typed mountain at the very bottom of the poster and coloured it green. However, this poster may appear a bit messy and chaotic due to the limited space. The overall balance of the poster seems a little off as a result of the different sized text and how the imagery affects their size.
my home mountain is finally getting the legal recognition it deserves and is being handed back over from crown control to the local māori it was stolen from!
