Making a Deal

John McCabe is a rich gambler, and supposedly a former gunfighter, who has recently built a shoddy brothel, in Presbyterian Church, Washington. After a while, he decides to supplement the place with fancier whores and one them is Constance Miller. She is a high-maintenance lady, with a distinctive British accent, who thinks big. Here, she is trying to convince Mr McCabe to accept her partnership by outlining some professional reasons on the challenges of this particular business…

Another visit to the heart doctor. I am not with it. I have forgotten my phone (on which I have become so dependent) and my date book. (Dammit.) I am given another examination. Things are pretty much okay but I have been asked to submit to yet another test. This will take place next week.

Huge traffic snarl. The President is in town.

A little break and then I go to a Union meeting. Our 802 lawyer brought up on charges. Big turnout, of members supporting him.

Nice to see a few people. An longtime ABT member mentions having met my son. It is not always so easy putting together that we are father and son. Very nice conversation.

I leave after an hour.

Note: Most interesting obit for Inger McCable Elliott, the woman who was duped by a young man claiming to be a friend of her daughter and saying that he was the son of Sidney Poitier. She told the story to John Guare and, some years later, using details of this, he wrote a play entitled "Six Degrees of Separation."

I have a (sort of) story to go with this. It was around 1980. I had been mugged and was still freaked out when I had to make my way to a rather remote part of Brooklyn to play a gig. I went by train, carrying a cymbal bag. After the gig I was waiting for a train back into the city (this was when we lived on West 81st Street) when a delay was announced. Bad timing as I wanted very much to return to the safety of my home. A tall Black man struck up a conversation. I wasn't ready for this (my attacker was Black). I got the idea he was keen on entering show biz, maybe drawn to the cymbal bag. Though I wasn't particularly keen to hear about it he said he had show business connections. He was carrying a notebook sized folder. He opened it and proudly presented an oversized photo of Sidney Poitier. About this time I was relieved to see an approaching train, it's lights prowling the track, giving me a chance to slip away. This concluded our conversation. Perhaps he did not have the time to tell me he was Poitier's son.
