Polyglot: The Early Days - Barca Femeni x Reader

Summary: Another Polyglot fic. Spanish is in italics.

A/N: This was supposed to be done like almost 2 weeks ago but I got sick and started it over a ton of times. Enjoy.

There’s a chance that this could go down as the beginning to the end of your career as a professional footballer. And the sad thing is that you haven’t even played a single game yet.

You’ll end up as just another rising star who faded into obscurity like Freddy Adu or Kleberson.

And if you quit, or god forbid completely fail, you have nothing to return to, having been told in no uncertain terms by your parents to not bother coming back.

You’re basically on your own.

Even more so today because while the rest of the B team is traveling to play their next match against Athletic, you’ve been chosen to stay behind and train with the full team.

That’s obviously a great thing but you had just gotten used to being around your teammates basically 24 hours a day and to be the only one called to train with the first team this time is a little nerve-wrecking.

But you do your best to push it all the way down as you walk into the building and towards the locker room. On your way there you run into Patri who is just as full of energy as every other time you’ve seen her.

“Buenas tardes, Y/N,” she practically shouts in your ear as she slings an arm over your shoulder. “I have a good feeling about training today, so let's get to it, si?”

You barely get a chance to greet her back or nod your agreement before the midfielder is practically dragging you through the halls and into the locker room.

Since you’re walking in with one of the human embodiments of a hurricane there’s no way for you to enter silently and unnoticed. In fact, your entrance is the exact opposite of that with the way the door all but slams open and Patri announces both of your presences as additions to the chaos.

Shaking your head, you move away from the slightly older player and to the corner where you normally get changed, mumbling polite greetings to everyone as you pass them.

Like always you make quick work of getting changed and head out to the field, not wanting to get caught up in the shenanigans you can see forming on the other side of the room.

That ends up being your best decision of the day because seconds before Lluis starts going over the training plan for the day Mapi, Leila and Jenni come rushing out of the locker room with lots of faux innocence plastered on their faces.

For the most part, training goes well. You do struggle at times with the pace you're being expected to move at but as time passes you adapt to it.

There’s also the slight issue of whatever is going on with the older defenders arguing over you in a mix of Spanish and Catalin when they think you aren’t paying attention (impossible when you hear your name like 6 times) but Melanie solves that quickly by whisper shouting something about English-speaking abilities and Lluis already having told Ana-Maria to do something yesterday.

A mystery to be solved later, or not at all if you get your way.

Your big misstep comes at the end of practice during the full-sided scrimmage.

You had let yourself get pulled out of position by Caro one too many times while your team was attacking and it comes back to bite you in the ass when a loose ball comes rolling towards the both of you. You manage to get there before the Norwegian but you make it at the same time as Patri who basically trucks you straight into the earth.

“Holy shit,” you groan as you get back to your feet and sprint to get back into position.

Your quick recovery works out in your favor, you get back fast enough to provide help defense to Pere who has Kheira caught in the corner. 

Kheira does her best to try and get around the two of you but a lucky toe poke from Pere frees the ball just enough for you to clear it downfield. You get it far enough that Lluis seems to decide that there’s no point in continuing play and chooses to end training for the day.

After a quick huddle, you head back into the locker room with the rest of the team. And despite the exhaustion that everyone seems to be facing, the noise level is almost identical to the way it was before practice.

You still don’t allow yourself to get sucked into the chaos rushing through your shower and getting changed but just as you go to leave, you’re stopped by Ana-Maria.

“Hey,” she says in English, “team bonding tonight at Paños’ house.”

“I can’t, I have homework.”

The Swiss woman just shakes her at you, “Bring it with you, Mapi and I will pick you up in a few hours.”

“You can try but I’m not gonna come with you.”

Spoiler alert: you do end up at the goalkeeper's house, sitting in a corner with your laptop and textbooks while the others are spread out across the living room.

You’re currently bent over your laptop and like 8 books on Stanley Kubrick trying to explain how Full Metal Jacket is the perfect example of his greatness as a director.

For most of the night, you’ve been very successfully using your headphones to ignore whatever is going on around you. Something that’s very hard to do when you’re being pelted in the back of the head by paper balls.

“Fucking hell,” you shout, ripping them off your head and turning around, “Can you cut that out?”

You’re greeted by the sight of Leila and Patri pointing guilty at each other.

Sighing deeply you turn back to your laptop only to find it being held hostage by Lieke, who’s standing across from you.

“Come eat.”

“I’m not finished,” you say, reaching across the table in an attempt to grab it back.

“You can take a break for 30 minutes to eat something,” she says, “It won’t kill you. There’s pizza in the living room.”

“It will kill me, give me back my laptop.”

“Go eat.”

“No.”

A hard stare, “Go eat.”

“No,” you say again,” And if you’re not gonna give my laptop back, that’s fine. I’ll just do my math homework instead.”

“Oh no you don’t. Ana, come get  your kid!” 

“Woah, firstly, I’m not her kid," you tell her, "I’m no one’s kid. And secondly, I didn’t want to come anyway so just let me do my work in argh!”

You find yourself thrown over someone’s shoulder and based on how high up you are, it can only be Ana-Maria.

“This isn’t fair.”

You don’t get a response as Ana carries you through Paños’ apartment and drops you on a couch next to Alexia.

“Stay,” she says before dropping a plate into your lap. “Eat.”

“I’m not a dog.”

“Most dogs don’t need to be told to eat, you do.” You stare blankly at her. “Eat.”

You open your mouth to continue protesting but as you do a slice of pizza is shoved into your mouth.

The glare doesn’t leave your face as you slowly chew, much to the amusement of the older women.

“Pobrecita, being forced to sit and eat free food that isn’t cooked en masse like it is at la Masia,” Alexia says to the team in Spanish as she throws an arm over your shoulder.

“She’s probably just hangry, it happens to my little sister sometimes,” Patri suggests, “but she’s 11 not 16 like grumpy over there.”

“La nene is only 16,” Vicky asks.

“Si.”

“No wonder she’s so grouchy,” Leila says, “It’s probably past her bedtime.”

You let the team continue talking about you as you eat your pizza (because you might’ve actually been hangry, not that you would admit it). It’s also a conversation mostly about nothing so you don’t feel the need to say anything.

Until you hear someone ask Ana to ask you something.

“Y/N, Jenni wants to know if,” you cut her off.

“Chicas, sabéis que hablo español, si? Like pretty fluently.”

The room goes silent.

“I’ll take that as a no,” you say before turning to Lieke, “Can I have my laptop back now?”

Maybe you’re not as on your own as you thought.

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee Canceled

Bummer news today. TBS’s late-night comedy show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee has been canceled and would not be returning this Fall.

A Daily Show alum, Bee truly brought it to late night comedy when the series began in 2016 during the 2016 Election and then the Trump era. I even named it one of my Top TV Shows of the year from 2016 to 2020.

Remembering Ray Liotta 1954-2022

Sad news today that actor Ray Liotta has died at 67. 

Liotta (second right) on set of Goodfellas. Meeting of the minds in this picture!

His greatest performance IMHO was his first breakout role as Ray Sinclair in Jonathan Demme’s brilliant 1986 film Something Wild. He comes in about half-way through the film, lays on the charm, and then brings the menacing psychopath into the love triangle. The fact that Liotta was rarely seen before that gave it a sense of discovery that this was a star-making performance. Melanie Griffith actually recommended Liotta as she knew him from her acting class.

Here is my combined remembrance of two celebrities who passed away today:

Remembering Bill Russell 1934-2022

NBA legend Bill Russell has died at 88. In addition to being a player on the Boston Celtics and later a coach, he had a few moments within pop culture. He appeared on several TV shows including episode of The White Shadow and Miami Vice. Best of all was when he hosted SNL in Nov. 1979.

This Month In History - March

March 4, 1982: Police Squad premiered

In March 1982, the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker team brought their laugh-a-minute style to TV with this short-lived parody of TV police shows. It was also the beginning of Leslie Nielsen’s Det. Frank Drebin character, made famous in The Naked Gun movies years later. Around 1991, after Naked Gun 2 1/2, they re-aired episodes to cash in on the film. The series is among the funniest ZAZ productions. Happy 40th Police Squad!

My #1 post of 2022

RIP Taylor Hawkins 1972-2022

I have been laying low on this blog in recent weeks after I was dealing with a personal loss, but I’m back here to pay tribute to one of my favorite musicians who has sadly passed away at age 50. Taylor Hawkins is one of the best drummers of his generation and this truly sucks. Anyone who knows me or reads this blog knows my fanaticism of Foo Fighters and Taylor was a tremendous part of the band. When you are a drummer in a band with Dave Grohl, one of the greatest drummers ever, one needs to rise to that challenge of drumming for a legendary drummer, which Taylor did time and time again!

Taylor Hawkins

 I first became aware of Taylor in 1995 when he became the drummer for Alanis Morissette. He appeared in her music video for “You Oughta Know” and toured with her. In the recent documentary Jagged, Taylor was one of the featured interviewees talking about that era. That tour lead to Taylor getting asked to join Foo Fighters in 1997 after William Goldsmith got fired. I had been a huge fan of Nirvana, so I picked up their 1995 debut, which was a Dave Grohl solo project that lead to a band. By the time I saw them in June 1997 at the WBCN River Rave, Taylor was the band’s new drummer who had just joined. He didn’t disappoint. In Nov. 1999 after There is Nothing Left to Lose was released, I saw the band do an in-store in NYC and I met Taylor (along with Grohl, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett) who signed my “Learn to Fly” 45 single and TINLTL CD.

Ruth: Eevee (female, evolves into Umbreon, has an insane rivalry with Kevin's Eevee)

Josie: Pidgeotto (idk the vibes work, and it can also mega-evolve to fit Josie's arc of being biologically enhanced by the Headwoods)

Miles: Pikachu (yeah, cliché, but tell me they're not perfect partners. That's right, you can't, because they are).

Winnie: Cubone (for those who know its lore I'm so sorry. For those who don't, Cubone basically wears the skull of its dead mother and wails all the time. You're welcome).

Mrs. Headwood: Nidorina (Nidorina and Nidorino are counterparts and they're part poison-type which ties in with the Headwoods being mad scientists, they can help with anaesthesia and stuff).

Icy Bob: Glalie (big angry ice ball that's not so bad if you look closely! Ideally, mega-evolved Glalie since it ties in with the fact that Icy Bob himself is biologically enhanced).

Lucifer:

Listen he really wants to just disintegrate them on the spot, but hes too sophisticated for that. So, instead, he shows up behind you in his demon form, placing a protective hand on your lower back. "Absolutely distasteful. My office. Now." He watches the demons trip on their way to his office, which may or may not have been his fault while checking you over. Once hes sure you're okay, he's going to dispose of some "trash".

Mammon:

Dont worry, Mammon is already there before they have a chance to go too far. Not only is he already in his demon form, but hes pissed. There might not be much to him but you cant deny that the new wall decorations, currently stuck to some antlers over the entrance way, wasn't quite the sight to behold. "Did you see that MC? You never have to worry with me around."

Leviathan:

Hes struggling internally. On one hand, he wants to knock their lights out, be your hero, and have you fawning over him for saving you, on the other hand he doesnt do well with conflict. So he watches. If it does get really bad, he'll drag you away, knowing that they wouldnt mess with the third born. "Let's go MC. They're just a waste of your precious time."

Satan:

Unlike Lucifer, hes not sophisticated and will get into a fist fight with them. He's the Avatar of Wrath for a reason. His normal demon form is suddenly too restraining and he yearns to turn into the beast he really is, but your small human mind couldn't comprehend that. In the end, he did end up uh... Getting rid of some useless wastes of space. He also got scolded by Lucifer for causing a scene but who cares; your safety was more important.

Asmodeus:

He doesnt talk with his fists, but he knows how to scare people off. Well, more like annoy them to death. No one says lewd things to HIS MC unless it him, ne ~ So how about that cute little top we saw the other day? Oh lets get our nails done! Isn't Brad Pitt so hot? Melanie Martinez can wreck me any day. Besides the fact that those uneducated lowlife demons wouldn't understand shit, Asmos talking soon becomes annoying.

Beelzebub:

Beel already has his fists balled up. Disgusting. Distasteful. He'll turn to stand in front of you, shielding you from the blows hes about to pass out. Theres no need for his demon form to show since hes threatening all by himself, but he didn't have control over it this time. It was instinct taking over and every fiber in his being told him to protect you. "Touch them and you wished you would've stayed in the pit you crawled out of."

Belphegor:

On the off chance that hes actually around to witness it, hes much like Levi at first; watchful. If it visibly makes you uncomfortable or their comments go a little too far, hes quick to step in. But he doesnt talk with his fists either, instead he spits venom. No one gets to insult you in such a low way and get away with it, "they really wasted atoms making your disgusting beings."

-ok remember that time i said she has daddy issues? part 1 of that story is that her father left her and her mother when she was a baby, so that’s a super fun start to life! she grew up in park forest, illinois just south of chicago with her mom and grandmother. she was a quiet little kid who like to draw and use play-doh and play make-believe. she never had a lot of friends and she never really minded. like i guess she did sometimes? but she was mostly content to do her own thing or hang out with like one of four friends that she had

-she grew up into the weird art kid we all were knew. maisie never really spoke unless spoken to because being assertive was the worst thing in the world. and its kind of hard to make friends when you don't start conversations with people. but she had books! books were her friends! (and also a few friends, but books are more fun). but yeah that’s kind of the gist of young maisie, painfully shy and obsessed with art and reading/writing. also a nervous wreck but painting and writing helped with that.

-anyway if we’re just doing the dirty deets, then really the next thing you need to know is daddy issues part two: he’s dead! he died when she was sixteen, he didn’t tell her mom he was dying even though he knew he was and then he just fucking died and maisie was like ...i never met my dead dad what the FUCK (except she whispered it because my girl swears like a sailor but only under her breath). and her fun little ball of anxiety turned into a fun ball of anxiety and depression and she started being a little bit of a dick to her family, but only because she was sad and confused and feeling things she didn’t understand (like anger)

-and this was right around the time she was like... i guess i don’t matter? and i just want people to love me? literally anyone will do! and that is my simple way of saying sis does not care like 99% of the time if people treat her right, she does not think highly enough of herself to have any sort of standards

-and then, as she was retreating deeper into her little shell and screaming “what the fuck am i supposed to do now, universe?” her fuckin mom died. like just over a year later. she was a senior in high school. and now one of the two people she was closest two in the world was dead and she was an orphan so thats shitty. and then maisie said “you know what universe, you can go FUCK yourself” and that time she actually yelled the fuck part because life doesn’t matter, clearly. (also, technically she was an orphan but she does have her grandmother, an actual saint. we love you kuia!)

-aaand this is when her anger issues started! which makes sense, she had reason to be mad. but not necessarily at the things she ended up being mad at. which was usually other people. (who kind of deserved it? usually? just not to the degree of mad she gets) like in her defense, she usually gets mad at people when they repeat the same shitty behavior, act like a dick to her or someone she cares about, or acts like a dick to anyone really, or when they say or do something really fucked. but that’s not always the case. sometimes they accidentally cut ahead of her in line at bean me up (what? she was under caffeinated) or they took the last beer at a party (she was thirsty??) (she doesn’t only get mad at people for beverage-related things, those are just the examples that came to mind). anyway. she goes from 0 to 100 real quick, and let me please remind you that this girl does not speak unless spoken to and hates assertiveness so people around her are like???? who the fuck is this bitch??  and let’s just say the people she went to high school with don’t love her. she’s still like that at covington but she can control it more, and she actually talks to people sometimes, so it’s not quite as jarring

-ok i’m getting super tired so the rest is rapid fire: ya girl is a visual arts major, creative writing minor in her 3rd year. if you want to find her, she’ll be in the library. she actually parties a fair amount now, because substances help numb the pain and make it easier to talk to people. (healthy behavior! yay). to the few people who actually know her, she is extremely sweet and loyal. she’s pretty much always listening to music. she’s left handed and the side of her hand is pretty much always covered in ink. her favorite color is purple. she’s bisexual as fuck. there is paint on all of her clothes. she smells like an art supply store, which is often not a good thing. (although she is obsessed with this apricot moisturizer that kind of helps mask the paint fumes, idk why I'm sharing this but now you know!) classic nose in a book type person. journals every day. doodles in every class, even the ones she loves and pays attention to. always carries a book. honestly a lot of this boils down to the fact that i originally called her a manic pixie nightmare and that is a pretty accurate description. 

-i feel like i’m missing stuff but i need to SLEEP. i won’t be on a lot in the next few days because i’m living that retail life and it’s almost christmas, but tomorrow night i’ll try to read everyone’s intros and send out plotting messages. in the meantime you should hit me up!! i want all the plots

- of course, Jon was probably using them anyway, and would have said if he’d seen anything coming to attack them, so the fact that she felt it necessary to ask just seems like it’s there to highlight the fact that she still wants the advantages. Basira is obviously not responsible for getting Jon to not eat people’s brains, that is on him, I don’t mean to imply that she is - I just find the continued pushing for him to be a monster even though she’s horrified when he is a monster somewhat frustrating.

- ah, that’s Jon! but baby S1 Jon being all dour into the tape recorder, my heart. and that is right at the start of the recording, so either they just missed Annabelle or there’s some sort of remote system (I favour “a bunch of tiny spiders”) or the tape recorder just knew when it was meant to turn on.

- ooooh on the Institute’s official stationary! now that’s a flex. interesting that it’s a form though, rather than a tape - there’s not much difference in flex whether it’s a tape or a hard copy, so long as it’s come from the Institute, so I suppose either Annabelle doesn’t want to engage with whatever has the recorders, we’re not supposed to hear her voice, or Jon needs to record it himself. if it’s the voice thing, that might lend further credence to the theory that Annabelle is Melanie’s therapist. I do really want Melanie’s therapy to be a good thing, though, it’s clearly being difficult for her to seek help and stuff and I don’t want that to bite her. 

- can I call you Jon? I’m going to call you Jon - there’s an echo of Nikola, but I do feel a bit more like, well, Annabelle’s been watching, she probably knows Jon as well as we do if not more, and we all call him by his first name. 

- I mean I have definitely met dogs who chose not to chase the ball. just because we know or are wondering why a dog has done a thing or not doesn’t mean we didn’t think said dog had a choice. dogs just like to make fun choices, I think.

- wait, has Jon always made up the summaries? or is that a new thing? I always just assumed there was a spot on the Institute’s form like “summarise your horrible experience in 10 words or less”.

- huh. now, generally, I think that most of the statements we have are true, or, at least, that the person giving them believes they’re true. Obviously people have lied to Jon, Elias for one, but that’s mostly been outside the statement format. This is inside a statement format, and we do kind of know that the Web has been manipulating Jon through the lighter, to the point where he can’t even seem to focus on it - if Annabelle can lie here then that’s interesting. usually people don’t seem to get like they choose what to describe or not to describe in a statement.

- “always over or underestimate you” - normally I’m not sure how much canon evidence there is for Web!Martin, though of course I like to play with it anyway, but this does remind me of him. This bit about an absent father, too.

- I do like the reminder of the distinction - the fears are not X, they are the fear of X. no actual manipulation needs to happen for the Web to get fed, someone just has to be afraid of it. the same for the Eye, I suppose - knowledge is a useful tool down here but it’s of no good to the Eye unless someone’s somehow being wrecked with it.

- static there - and no comment on it from Jon, so probably fun Web powers, perhaps he’ll have to obey this order. I don’t think we’ve finished with Hill Top Road though - even if it’s not Jon, I expect someone is going to go back there. for a location that’s been built up for so long, I’d prefer for us to not just pop there for a statement and nothing to ever happen with it again.

- had to lie down with Prentiss’ statement, too, and he did get tired out by doing a few in a day when he was still staying with Georgie - do all statements still do that after he woke up from the Unknowing, or has it just been Annabelle’s?

- Anyway. I’m hoping that Jon will go to the others and ask for help to not be a monster, but I doubt I’m going to be lucky on that score, as Jon’s never really been particularly good at asking for help. I expect him to try to stop on his own, and then probably fail with someone he actually does care about, like Georgie or Martin, rather than with a stranger, as returning to strangers, while still awful, wouldn’t feel like quite such an escalation.
